You need to know THINGS. Certain things that make your blog run smoothly and more efficiently.

The following list are things that happened to me at one point or another. Some good and some bad things. But the point I’m trying to make here is that if I knew some of these things, I wouldn’t had run into the problems I ran into.

So hopefully this list will help you in some way or another.

Things Every Blogger Should Know

10: Frame of Mind Matters – Don’t create content when you’re tired, in a bad mood, or distracted. Your content material will be half ass and the way you feel will show in your content. Be well rested and clear headed. You’ll be more productive and you will put the best possible stuff you have.

9: Always Back Up – Before you start posting, install a plugin, test a new theme, or anything that will change or update your blog, BACK UP your blog.

I lost the IP blog 2 weeks prior to writing this post. All I did was update one of my plugins. Turns out that one plugin wasn’t compatible with the latest WP update. Luckily I had a backup. I use a plug called WP-Twin to back up my blog. Life saver.

8: When to Outsource – Very important to know your limits. If there’s something you want done on your blog and you have know freaking idea how to do it, OUTSOURCE it.

You’ll save time, energy, and money if you just have someone that knows exactly what they’re doing. While your outsourcer is working on that project, you can be working on other important projects. My Favorite place to go is oDesk.com

7: Detect Broken Links – Links will brake from time to time. It’s important to detect them before it’s to late. If you have an affiliate link or links to your own products, you can and will lose potential sales.

If you detect it early you can find another related product to replace it. I use this plugin called Broken Link Checker. It automatically emails me when it finds broken links.

6: Install Plugs and Themes – Yes, this seems really dumb and stupid but hear me out. If you have a WordPress blog, you will be installing and uninstalling plugs like crazy. It’s a part of split testing and trying out new things.

If you don’t know how to do it, then you’ll have to pay someone. It all adds up. It’s really easy and takes a second. You’d be surprised at how many don’t know how to do this. Learn how to do simple tasks like this. You’ll save a ton of $$$ in the long run.

5: Unused Plugs Should be Removed – If you got themes, plugins, or anything you just don’t use, get rid of it. Unused tools will just clutter slow your blog down.

4: Life’s to Short for a Crappy Blog – If you’re going to take blogging seriously, then you need to invest a little time and energy to really think about what your blog will look and feel like. No one wants to visit a crappy, cluttered, nasty looking blog.

It’s important that your visitors know exactly what your blog is about as soon as they hit your blog.

3: Know Your Audience – I can’t stress this enough. If you’re going to get into a niche market, you MUST know who your audience are, what their needs are, and what their wants are. Nuff said.

2: Invest Time in Research – Do your due diligence on everything you do. If you’re getting into a new niche, find out everything about it. Looking for a new product or service, Find out what it will do for you and your business. What ever you do, do a real thorough research.

1: Know Your Purpose – For me, it’s important to know why I’m getting into what ever I’m getting into. Whether it be blogging, affiliate marketing, podcasting. There has to be a purpose. There has to be joy in it. If you’re not happy, then why do it. Life’s to short. Enjoy it doing what you love and what you want to do.

That’s my list of things every blogger should know. I’ve experienced good and bad things with each and every one of them and I believe it’s important to know.

Obviously the bad stuff came from not knowing what the hell I was doing or was just to lazy to do it. And the good came from knowing and being smart about it.

Often times, the extra income you need is looking for a viable idea, and that idea is right under your nose. Situations may try to blur your goals, but don’t give in to these threats.

You can achieve anything you set your mind on no matter how difficult it seems. Now, enough of the motivation, let’s leave that to Brian Tracy and Talk about enhancing blogging income.

1. Launch a Valuable Product

You got that right, launch a valuable product.

It might not be an e-book or short report; it could be a mobile app, a contest or plugin to enhance bloggers life. I could recall what happened in 2009 when I launched my first contest; I got 1,039 targeted visitors and made massive sales with product recommendations.

Anything that can wow your readers’ life is ideal this year.

They’ve known you for months, or even years, before you realize what’s happening, they would switch over to another blog where new trends are unveiling. Nonetheless, when releasing any product to the market, ensure it’s helpful (forgive my cliché) but it’s vital to your success. If you can’t help your readers, don’t bother launching anything.

2. Be At The Forefront Of Hot Trends

A lot of bloggers are way behind schedule and that’s why they’re broke.

Successful bloggers keep abreast of hot trends. Hot trends are the secret recipe to cashing in before everyone does. There are really no secrets to life and making money, but getting to the Station before the train, makes you special and there is reward for punctuality.

This year, being at the top of your niche news-wise is paramount. Several new developments are happening right now. Google+, algorithm updates, metric testing, Facebook timeline, twitter streamlining, linkedIn sleek connections and all manner of social media developments are taking place.

If you consistently churn out articles on these hot trends, and build few quality backlinks, it could increase organic traffic to your blog because you would rank highly on Google homepage. What about writing short reports about Google+ and selling to your readers, will they buy? Of course they’ll if and only if you’ve good marketing character.

3. Marketing Marathon Strategy

When I was in High School, I participated in the yearly Marathon race.

It takes decision, perseverance and sense of direction to win a marathon race. Speed is vital but doesn’t apply in all spheres of marathon. Fact is: every contestant is running to win a prize. Isn’t that what blogging is all about?

This year, decide to win a prize for your hard work. Running a blog is not an easy task – if it’s easy for you, well I find it slightly hectic. Keeping up with the daily posts, social media sharing and networking takes time and sacrifice, just like in Marathon.

But guess what? The efforts you put into blogging would eventually pay-off if you don’t give up. Those that wait and explore the more, will definitely receive a golden crown from Mother Nature. Well, not from me, but from a source that’s invisible, but rewards every man (blogger) according to his works.

4. Are You A Suicidal Blogger? Stop it

I came across an e-book today, it’s so explicit of who a suicidal blogger is. Are you eager to know? First, suicidal bloggers are trading on dangerous grounds. If they don’t change course and seek for help, their years of hard work may soon diminish and get drowned in the red sea.

A suicidal blogger is that person who owns, receives targeted traffic, have strong marketing chutzpah, an active social media user but “DOES NOT BUILD EMAIL LIST.”

You got that right. You’re committing blogging suicide if your mailing list is 0. You can’t trust Google to deliver free traffic to your blog consistently, at least not anymore. Their weird panda doesn’t want to show mercy at all. A lot of sites with quality contents and natural off page links were infected by panda updates. Every blog is a potential panda casualty.

But when you build a responsive email list, you could drive avalanche of free buyer traffic at the push of a button. If the money isn’t in the list, where else is it?

5. Become A Corporate Broker

Some people call it consultant, but in the context of what we’re talking about, being a corporate broker could earn you some decent brokerage (commission). What’s your role?

It’s pretty straight-forward and if you own a functional blog, half of what you need to do is already done. The power of web marketing is obvious in offline world. Corporate firms and small business entrepreneurs are looking for experts to bring them online and expose their brands to the right eye balls.

That’s where you come in. Get the project and ensure you understand the pros and cons – bill the clients (corporate firms and entrepreneurs) and simply outsource the project to capable hands.

For instance, if you land a writing project and you’re not a freelance writer or lack the inclination – hire a freelance writer. When the job is done, send full payments and keep the balance. In essence, you’ll be making money as a broker and that money is termed “brokerage.”

WRITER’S BLOCK!

Damn it man. For the life of me I could not come up with anything to write, make a video, or nothing.

If you noticed, the IP blog went without a post from the 20th to the 30th of January. Not good. Especially if you have frequent regular readers coming to your blog on a daily basis.

So I remembered this cool little method I learned years ago and BOOM! Worked like a charm. I been writing and making videos for days.

I made a video showing you the process.

Hope this little method can help ya out in coming up with content. It works for writing, videos, and even podcast.

This is the first Income Press Report of the 2012 year. Very stoked and excited about it and I hope you are too.

For those new to the IP Blog, I started the Income Press Blog back in Nov of 2011. And every month since I share everything that’s going on with this blog.

Everything from the traffic, income, split tests, and any other things I might be up too.

I do this to show the growth of this blog and if there are any improvements to do, then I go ahead and do them. I’ll try new methods and tactics and document them here.

This allows my peeps reading this blog to see exactly what I do and if you’re going to try them out, then at least you’ll know exactly what worked for me and what didn’t.

As I said many times before, my hopes for this blog is to motivate and inspire many of those wanting to get started online and for those that have been online for a while and still struggling, to finally get out and start making some kind of money online.

Now I must stress that this thing of ours isn’t all as easy as it may look or made out to be. It may look easy at times but trust me, it wasn’t always like this. The reason it looks easy is because I’ve been doing this for a while now.

I’ve been through the learning curve, I’ve gone through the struggles. I’m not saying I know it all. This is an ever going learning process. And yes, there are still struggles.

It’s how you react to those struggles that make the difference in the outcome, in the end results.

So with that said lets get this thing rolling baby ;-)

Biggies in January

January was a huge month for the IP blog. From traffic, income, subscribers, the whole nine yards.

Worked on a ton of split testing ideas. Some worked and some didn’t. But man, the ones that did work, I ran hard ass with it.

As you’ll see by the results below, it paid of big time.

Split Testing #1 – Header Banners

Ok so as I mentioned in my 2012 Screw New Years post, lol. A few of my goals are to increase:

• RSS Subscribers

• Facebook fans or likes

• Youtube Subscribers

I first had a social widgets plugin on my sidebar. That was doing ok but really wasn’t producing the numbers I needed.

So then I moved the widget to the top right of the header.

That totally bombed on me. The numbers actually decreased to almost nothing. Went from an average of 20 clicks per day to 1 – 3 clicks. Sometimes even zero.

At first I thought it was the header. Maybe people just didn’t like it there or just missed it.

Then I did some back tracking and realized that when I had that social widget plugin on the sidebar, the numbers actually dropped from when I first changed it from it’s original form.

I use to have 2 separate widgets for the RSS and FB links.

Since I found out what the problem was, I decided to try something else. I opened up my photoshop and whipped up some quick banners with a call to action text and added my picture on it.

Since I only had one space to work with and I really wanted to split test all my subscription options. The only way to do this was to have the banners rotate. I used a plugin called Max Banner Ads to do this.

An old plugin I had stashed away and haven’t used in a long time.

This worked like a charm. I mean I went from less than 20 RSS subs to over 1,200 and about 15 likes to just over 400. Awesome numbers.

My guess on why it worked so well is this:

1: Bigger banner – Now people can see it.

2: Straight forward Call to Action – Tells people exactly what to do.

3: Big huge picture of me – What can I say, I’m just good looking ;-)

If you notice, out of the 3 banners one does not have a call to action. This is for my YouTube channel. The numbers on this sucked big time. Hardly any clicks.

I purposely did this to see exactly what was it that brought the numbers up. Obviously having the bigger banner made a big difference.

But I truly believe that what made a huge impact in the numbers was having just ONE option at a time and giving a CLEAR Call to Action.

You must let the visitor know exactly what you want them to do.

Another thing was that it did not have the word “YouTube” in it. No one knew what the hell that banner was about or what they was suppose to do. From a glance the banner just looks like part of the IP blog logo.

Again, just as you have to let them know exactly what to do, you also have to let them know what the hell the banner is and what it’s for.

Split Testing #2 – Hello Bar

I’m a frequent reader to some of the top bloggers out there and one day after reading a few of them, I noticed that they were using this floating bar across the very top of the header.

So I asked one of them about it, they gave me the link, I got it and I split tested it.

It’s called Hello Bar. I placed it on both my old JKDC blog and on the IP blog. From the old blog I drove traffic back to the IP blog. Got about a 20% increase of traffic just from my old blog.

Then on the IP blog I split tested driving the traffic to different posts, my FB page, RSS page, ect. I have a post dedicated just for the Hello Bar so I’ll save some of the goodies for that.

Income Sky Rockets

Literally the income that IP generated last month just shattered December’s numbers. Going from $73 to well over $4k. AMAZING! Simply AMAZING!

Let me tell ya that this happened with out any hard selling what so ever. About 60% of it came from the resources page. About 10% of it came from the free ebook I give away. And the rest came from my Youtube videos.

Now obviously the income that the ebook generated was from outside the blog. However, they got the ebook from the IP blog so this blog is responsible for that income. It’s highly relevant.

Here’s the breakdown:

The Resource Page – This give people a chance to see what you recommend and what kind of tools you currently use or have used before.

The key here is to show people what you currently use or have used to run your business. This is important. Only recommend stuff that you personally use or have used. Don’t just put things there just cause you would get a commission for it.

If you like to read then show people the kind of books that inspire you. You’d be surprised at how many will actually want to read what you read.

Make about 80 – 90% of the recommendations affiliate links and the rest free stuff. You don’t want to seem like you’re shoving shit promos down peoples throats. People hate that.

Free eBook – If you have a blog, site, or whatever, you should always have some type of eBook or report to give away FREE. A step by step process on how to do something that worked for you.

My eBook shows people how I made $1,805.18 in seven days. I show them all the tools and resources I used to make that happen. Some of them are affiliated and some not.

Again the key here is to show people exactly what you used and what you did with it to achieve results.

Truly passive income that eBook right there.

YouTube Videos – Every video I’ve made talking about a tool or service I’m using and have an affiliate link for it, I say that they can get this tool or service through my affiliate link.

I’m being totally transparent and cool about it. Plus I always give great value by providing some kind of tutorial on the actual product.

I’m not hard selling or pitching anything. I simply just say … Hey if you’d like to get this, here’s my affiliate link.

People will respect you more for not shoving stuff down their throats.

Niche Sites – Not much to say with the niche sites as far as income goes. Only made about $12 bucks with adsense and the majority of that was with my Youtube ads.

Kind of disappointed with those numbers but there’s still room to grow. I got plans to improve those numbers and of course I’ll be sharing them with ya.

I spent most of the month focusing on ranking which worked out pretty well. I made a video about it. You can watch it here <==

For February I’m gonna focus on implementing and split testing some Amazon product to see if I can bring in some more income that way.

iPhone Apps

I’m going to include my iPhone App business here from now on. I use to give detailed reports on my old blog but since I no longer update that blog, I figured I’d bring it here.

Some of ya guys are asking for it so why not right.

I really haven’t done much with the app business. Actually I haven’t done any type of marketing. The money it makes is totally 100% passive income. Not much to brag about but still, it all adds up.

Traffic

I’ll keep this one short mainly because I’m over 1300 words deep right now. Plus I have a post dedicated on January’s traffic and how I was able to increase it ten fold.

Just to give you an idea, the IP blog went from 254,950 to 157,918 ranked in Alexa as of today as I’m writing this post. That’s awesome. I’m sure I’ll break the 100k very, very soon.

Crazy stats huh, lol. I’ll get into even more deeper details in a post coming soon. So much to go over that I don’t wanna overwhelm you here.

  • I decided to add the expenses cause last month I had several people email me asking about it. They wanted to know roughly what I spend a month to run my business. My overhead is minimal. I’ve always kept it low.
    
    The majority of this are just the regular stuff I need to run my online business. Hosting, Aweber, other tools and services that allow me to automate most of the things I do. For years I ran my business with less than $50 a month. That was just for hosting and Aweber. It’s really all you need to start.

• Net Total in January: $4,176.19

Pretty sweet month ;-)

As you can see by the numbers that there was a huge spike in income and traffic generated from December to January. But as I said before, I’ve been doing this for a while and in between there were a ton of split testing done.

And that’s the key here. SPLIT TESTING!

Through out this post I’ve talked about split testing this and split testing that. If I had not done any of that I doubt very much those number would be where they’re at today.

The Big Lesson Learned

Split test everything you do. Even if you think you’ve reach the maximum results, keep split testing. There’s always room for improvements.

Another lesson learned. Don’t be afraid to use some of your old tools. If you’re like me, you probably have a library of tools you’ve purchased just cause you thought it was cool or wanted it just in case you need it one day.

When I was thinking of the rotating banner idea, I remembered that I had the Max Banner Ad plugin stashed away in one of my external hard drives.

I whipped it out and BOOM, worked awesome for me.

Before you go out looking for the next big thing or tool and spend tons of time and money looking for the right stuff, take a look at what you have already.

You might find that you have exactly what you need stashed away somewhere.

Things to look for in February

For Feb, I’m gonna focus more on split testing with Amazon products to try and bring in some extra income other then Adsense.

Now that I’ve got my niche sites ranking good and getting ok traffic, I can start implementing product sales and other ways to make more of an automated stream of income.

I’ll also be implementing list building tactics to see if the market’s good for some email marketing.

It’s always a good idea to build a list in any niche you’re in just in case your other methods don’t bring in any income. You can try to market via email.

A quick note. Not every niche is a good market for email marketing. Some niches simply wont respond to it.

To find out just simply do a quick promo. If it doesn’t work out well then you’ll probably want to stop building that list cause you’ll just be stuffing your aweber with unnecessary leads.

It cost money to maintain a list, whether it be a live active one or a dead list.

I’d like to thank all who participated. For many this was actually the first time ever building a blog let alone writing and creating content.

Sometimes we just need a little extra push to get us going. I’m glad that this challenge did that for some and hopefully it can do the same for those that come after and read it.

Just because the challenge is over, it doesn’t mean that you still can’t challenge yourself and get it done.

My goal here was not to create a one and done type of thing. My goal here was to create sort of like a blueprint for all to follow. A step by step process you can easily follow and accomplish.

And this is really what this whole income press blog is all about. To display some sort of step by step process or a blueprint anyone can follow.

I do this by showing you what I do to make things happen. Whether it be to drive traffic, generate leads, make money, what ever.

The point is that if I can do it, any one can. And yes that is sooo cliche’, but WTF! It’s true.

I’m not a genius, a college grad, I didn’t major in anything, hell I’m a high school dropout. But I’m still able to make a full time income from the comfort of my own home. Hopefully this is something I can pass on to you.

I would definitely change the header. It’s a little bit to busy and a bit dark. This is about herbal teas. The first thing I think of when I hear that name is healthy, cleansing, things like that.

So I would get something with a lighter background color. You can leave the flower. Take out the big FB with the red text. Move the site name and quote to the left.

There’s 3 initial steps I take to optimize my niche sites. I’ll break them down for you below.

Step 1: Find Ranking Keywords – All you do here is take the keywords you’re already targeting and bring them over to Market Samurai (free trial). Check which ones you’re ranking for.

What you’re looking for here is the keywords that need help in getting ranked. If you have keywords on the first or second page of google, then leave them alone. They don’t need any help.

Focus on the keywords from page 3 and on, (only the keywords you’re ranked for). Take those keywords and analyze them to see which ones are the money keywords.

Now that you found which ones need help and which ones are the money keywords, now we’re ready for step 2.

Step 2: Spinning – What I do here is take one of the articles in my niche site that I’m ranking for and spin it using Content Professor. I generally do this step manually because I like my articles to be a good read. But the software will do it for you if you choose.

note: For you Mac users, this is a perfect tool simply because it’s web based.

Once You’re done spinning your articles, you’re now ready to start submitting them to get crazy backlinks to your niche site.

Step 3: Creating Backlinks – Now we’re going to take your keywords and articles and submit them using Unique Article Wizard. I’ve been using this tool here for the past few months and it’s been giving me some pretty good results.

One very important thing you need to do here is to make sure that your title has the exact matching keyword from your list of money keywords. And when you create your anchor text links, make sure you also use exact matching keywords and 1 non related hyperlink. Just as I showed you in the video.

On the exact matching keyword direct link to one of your posts within your niche site. On the non related keyword direct link back to your main root domain.

That’s it. That is all I do to optimize my niche sites.

How Often Should You Optimize?

There’s really no set rule for this. I usually check it once a week and sometimes every 2 weeks. Remember. SEO it slow and boring. You don’t wanna be there every single day. Let tools like UAW and Google do the work for you.

When you see some keywords that are just standing still in the rankings for like 3 – 5 days, then you know it’s time for a little boost and you simply repeat these 3 steps here.

Try them out, It’s been working well for me, so why not right. It can’t hurt you, it can only help you.
