Things I forgot to Ask During the Interview:

I wanted to ask Marshall about the rappers who swiped his audio clips but I honestly just forgot. After the interview I asked Marshall  if he wouldn’t mind answering a few question about it. He was so cool that he didn’t it over an FB chat ;-)

Questions about the Swiping Rappers:

Q1: How did you find out they used your audio clips?

A: A fellow social media marketer had messaged me with the link, around Christmas time, saying, “Marshall, I’ve heard your voice in enough videos to know this is you. How did you make this happen?”

I thought he had done a fun gesture and put my voice in the track. Then I checked the source, and it was on Soulja Boys official Youtube page. The same one with his, “Soulja Boy: Tell ‘Em – Crank That” hit single with 139,059,834 views.

Q2: Did Soulja Boy ask you for permission to use you audio clip?

A: Souja Boy didn’t use permission. He and his friends were apparently looking around Youtube, found me reading the Forbes list, and then talking about what it’s like to have my friend be the daughter of a billionaire.

Q3: Did you contact them about it?

A: I did private message on Youtube, and Twitter, just to see if it would result in anything, but knew it was just a shot in the dark with how cluttered their inbox is.

Q4: Has that gotten you any traction as far as traffic, more clients, etc.?

A: It doesn’t bring me traffic since it’s unknown that it’s me as far as any normal listener would know. However, it’s been priceless in my own branding, and being interesting to prospective clients. “Tell me about this Soulja Boy song, ‘Gettin Paid’. How did that come about?” is a question I get all the time. That sparks a useful intro conversation about the power of putting yourself out there to the world.

IP 031: Andrew Warner on Getting The Most Out of Your Interviews

I was originally going to just have a podcast and then a post for this topic, but since I’m covering the same thing, thought it be best to combine them.

It’s been a long time dream and goal of mine to get into Public Speaking.

On April 20, 2013, my dream came true. I spoke for the first time ever at an Internet Marketing Event (JV Alert Live) in front of a live crowed.

Now I only got a 10 minute spot, but man let me tell ya, that felt like for ever.

I have to thank Ken McArthur for this opportunity. He’s an amazing person and really does care for people, especially people just starting out in this thing of ours.

Here’s another cool thing. JV Alert Live was the very first event I ever went to. Before then I knew nothing about events, let alone knew they existed. So it was kinda cool it being my first speaking gig at the first event I ever went to.

I had only ten minutes to speak:

Ken had 8 or 10 slots open for a quick ten minute talk. If you weren’t done in ten, you get buzzed!

Now this got me thinking all kinds of crazy.

• What the hell can I talk about in ten minutes
• How can I deliver something great in ten minutes
• and if I don’t finish in ten minutes, I’m gonna get BUZZED! WTF!

Just knowing that I’ll get buzzed was enough.

What I Did to prepare for a ten minute talk

Since I only had 10 minutes to deliver something great, and since this was my first time, I had to do some good ol’ fashion searching.

So the first thing I did was listen to a ton of TEDxTalks presentations. They’re usually about 15 – 20 minutes long and are always jammed packed with great content.

I’ve been to a lot of Marketing Events and the talks are usually about 90 – 120 minutes, sometimes longer. That’s like 2 hours plus. However, though the 2 hours plus content are great, it always amazes me how the people on TEDxTalks do the same in under 20 minutes.

Then I listened to some World Championship of Public Speaking videos. This was recommended by my good buddy Sergio Felix. Thanks a ton for this Sergio, this really helped a lot ;-)

I thought TEDxTalks were great, but man, these guys were doing talks in less than 10 minutes. In fact the 2011 and 2012 Champs won it with talks less than 10 minutes. This is exactly what I needed!

I couldn’t believe the amount of information and content that was giving in such a short amount of time. I thought to myself …If they can do it, I know I can.

Now it’s time to figure out what I was going to talk about

Now that I was done watching and listening to videos, I needed to get my talk down. Actually figure out what I was going to talk about.

I read (again) one of my favorite books by Dale Carnegie, Stand and Deliver. I love this book.

The first chapter really made a huge impact on what I was going to talk about, how I structured it, and how I was going to present it.

These are three key things that helped me with my talk:

Key Thing 1: What I was going to talk about. – I needed to know exactly what I was talking about. I needed to know the material so well that I could literally talk about it to anyone at any giving time. Like a true master of his craft.

So I decided to talk about something that I’m currently doing now, something that’s working and not only that, but something that I’ve been doing for years.

It was important to me to talk about something that’s current, working, and that I’ve been doing for a long period of time.

Key Thing 2: How I structured it. – I was originally going to right down the entire talk, word for word. But according to Dale Carnegie, you shouldn’t do that or you shouldn’t memorize the entire talk because then it’ll sound like you’re reading it.

So I didn’t.

To structure my talk I followed the rule of three. Break down your talk into 3 main sections. Then talk about each section. That’s it!

There’s a famous quote written in the book that says …

Tell ‘em what you’re gonna tell ‘em. Tell ‘em. Then tell ‘em what you told ‘em.”

This really helped structure my talk because it gave me an opening, middle, and a close.

Key Thing 3: How I was going to present it. – The most important thing to do at the beginning of a presentation, talk, webinar, or interview is to Break the Ice.

Usually people do this by making some kind of joke. I didn’t have anything funny to say, plus I was going to be to nervous to even attempt to crack a joke.

So what I decided to do is to start off by telling them the truth about this being my first speaking gig and to give a small bit of history of that particular event. This really calmed my nerves and broke the ice so to speak.

This transparency was well received, even by the more experienced speakers. They all said I did very well which was pretty cool ;-)

For the rest of the talk I pretty much followed the structure in key thing 2. I told them what I was going to tell them. I told them. Then I told them what I just told them.

How I rehearsed for my ten minute talk

Now that I figured out what I was going to talk about, structured it, and how I was going to present it, I needed to bring it to life.

So I rehearsed it in my head, in my car, while I took a shower, bathroom duties, while I ate breakfast, lunch and dinner, and anywhere I could rehearse it on my own, I did it. I did it over and over and over again.

I used my iPhone’s timer. I set it at ten minutes and let it run down. I wanted to get my talk down to less than 8 minutes.

Once I got the time down to 8 minutes, I rehearsed it in front of my son first, then my 2 daughters, then my wife, and then all of them together.

Here’s how I timed my talk:

1. First minute: Brief mention of my first speaking gig, what my talk was about, who I was and what I do.
2. Next 6 minutes: My talk, the actual presentation
3. Last minute: a quick Recap of my talk

There you have it. That’s my first speaking experience.

It took all of 7.17 for the entire talk. I was the fastest to finish, the only one who went through it without stopping to ask for how much time I got, and 1 of 3 who finished it in ten minutes or less.

I’d say it was pretty good for my first time out. Yes, there are a ton of things I need to work on, but all in all, I’m pretty happy with it.

IP 013: Q&A Session

Well that depends on who you ask. If you ask me, I’ll probably give you a different answer than the next guy.

So I did a quick google search just to see what other ones were out there that might be different than my interpretation of it.

Here’s what I found:

• Words that urge the reader, listener, or viewer of a sales promotion message to take an immediate action.
• The implicit or explicit suggestion contained in a marketer’s content in an advertising banner or Web site copy.
• Statement usually found near the conclusion of a commercial message that summons the consumer to act.

Here’s my definition: Basic instructions of telling people what to do…

There’s really no secret or anything high tech about it. It’s just those other people, or sites make it sound more complicated than it really is.

There’s to forms of CTA’s I use and probably the only ones I use now a days.

1: Blatant Call to Action – This is just that. You blatantly tell people exactly what do to.

2: Hidden Call to Action – This one can be very dangerous. You can make people walk down the street in their underwear, lol (not really but it can be scary)

No, I’m not talking about the kind of content that you got from PLR or MRR stuff, or the ones you just whip up for the sake of putting up content.

And that old cliche, “Content is King” …Bullshit …No, content is not KING.

What makes content king?

You must ask yourself this question. Because just putting up content doesn’t cut it anymore. You can’t even put up content that gives some kind of value.

Now a days you really have to go way above and beyond when delivering content.

IP 008: Niche Site State of Panic

Scott and his brother Brian built a million dollar business in less than 15 months. They took their knowledge of Facebook and turn it into a successful business.

In 2009, Brian had a job shredding papers and Scott was going to college when they both started their online journey in the baseball niche market. The site is called TrainBaseball.com.

This was their passion, it’s what they knew, and it’s what they were good at so it made sense to get in that market.

They ran this site on their spare time. Brian, when ever he could and Scott, from his college dorm room.

Brian is “the face guy”, the guy on the videos, audios, and training. Scott is “the behind the scenes guy”, handling all the techie stuff.

Their first dollar made was from a $27 eBook on the Train Baseball site. 15 months later, they’re running a million dollar business.

Amazing story and I can’t wait for you to hear it.

IP 007: $27 to $1.2 Million in 15 Months

I’ll be deleting that show and before I did, I wanted to salvage any good recordings. This one here was the only one worth salvaging. It’s so full of great content and I just had to share it again.

In this session I interviewed a very close friend of mine, Devon Brown. This is a guy who I highly look up to, respect, and admire for not only his work ethics, but his true passion for helping people.

Devon is a straight up dude, funny as hell, and a person you should definitely check out.

In this session we spoke about how Devon uses outsourcing to get things done quicker and faster so he can focus on things that he truly loves and enjoys.

One big take away for me in this session was when Devon talked about this S.W.O.T. analysis, (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threats). Basically you’re suppose to figure out what you’re strong at and what your weak on, then work on your weaknesses.

Well Devon says “screw that”. He believes that you should work on and focus 100% on your strength and outsource the crap that you are weak at and hate the most.

lol, funny but it’s so true. When you have to focus on both, then that means you have to split your focus 50/50 between the both of them. In most cases you end up focusing 80% on weakness cause you work so hard on learning and trying to figure things out. If you focus 100% on what you’re good at, then you’ll be more productive.

Anyway, that was the biggest take away for me. I’m sure you’ll find many golden nuggets in this session as there are many.
