Just Not Enough Time in a Day

I was just mentioning earlier today how I'll have to invest in a backpack pretty soon if things continue to go as they have over the last several weeks. I'm settling into school quite nicely. Some days I hate to drag out of bed, turn the computer on, do a bit of reading, answer a question, respond in a discussion thread, log back off and crawl back under the warm fuzzy cover.

SCHOOL SUCKS.

Then I think to myself "kid you must be crazy - your classroom is either in your living room or on your lap. What more can you ask for?". The only thing I can think of is T I M E. I want to goof around on Facebook all day. I want to watch the Chopped marathon on FOOD Network. I want to read my favorite blogs. I want to see what the latest gossip is...but I just don't have the time.

Although advancing my studies in the field of nursing has been made more convenient via online studies. I still have to study. So, I might not be around as much...but I'm still here.

I've just finished my first course (with an A!) and will be tackling TWO this session...which starts next week. Wish me luck and I'll holler at you guys when I can.

I had no idea Beyoncé Knowles (Carter) was coming out with a self produced documentary chronicling [in an extremely monotone and superficial way] what it's like to be, who else, Beyoncé. The documentary included no interviews of other family members. I mean this extremely successful entertainer has a mother, father, sister, husband, former Destiny's child group members, and others in her inner circle that we're oblivious of that could have shared a more real world account of what it's been like for her, at least through their eyes. She thanked her family members for certain things they'd given her. Her mother for tirelessly praying for her and being there for her. Her father for teaching her the shrewdness required to be a no nonsense business woman and her insatiable drive to achieve her goals and dreams.

Still when she spoke of her father there was a hint of sadness in her voice. Their split was a lot messier than the "daddy-it's-time-for-me-to-grow-up-and-make-my-own-decisions" that she attempted to pawn off on the millions (I'm sure) that viewed her documentary.

I won't spend a lot of time on Beyoncé. I would hate for anyone to mistake me being nosey and having nothing else to blog about this morning for a fanatical Bey lover obsessed with her every move - NOT!. One thing that I did notice was how she looked directly into the camera and spoke with such conviction, emotion and candidness........until the little exert about the rumors about her using a surrogate to carry her and Jay-Z's baby was brought up. Her eyes diverted left....then right...rarely did she look into the camera. All tell tell signs of deception. Does she think she'll lose her legion of fans simply because she chose to use a surrogate. They're not the only couple who've used this as an option, if this is truly the case.

I enjoyed my pregnancies but if I had the hush money to pay off an incubator.... I can't say that I wouldn't have done it too. Honey you can have these swollen ankles, full bladder, big(ger) nose and post-baby body...that it takes more than 4 weeks to be absolutely perfect again...if you were perfect in the first place.

I enjoyed your performances Beyoncé. You're a dynamic entertainer....but your documentary was just more hype and exposure..... .....

oh...but the baby was cute :-))

I've never had the pleasure of eating Chicken & Waffles but it seems to be a real treat. So much so that Lay's is rolling out a couple of fan inspired new flavors of potato chips. Uhhhh... think I'll pass.

Okay, I'm not going to sweat Bey too much for this (cause all chicks hate to take ugly pics). I mean I always have to take, retake, grab someone else's phone and approve or disapprove of my pics before they post. So, in a sense I do feel her pain. But this phenomenal woman has got to realize that even though she's drop dead gorgeous, thanks to genetics and a little help from ~~friends~~ Dr. 90210, every now and then she's going to be captured in a not so flattering pose, facial expression, etc.

The difference is her and the average camera hog, like me, is the fact that she has thousands of gorgeous ones plastered EVERYWHERE!

She jiggles, pumps it up, drops it low and shakes it like no one I've seen in years. Let's face it the girls got talent.

Don't smush the baby!!!!!

An angelic voice, a gorgeous body (doesn't look like she ever carried a baby ) *hint* *hint*

I think the idea of her publicist wanting popular blogs and other websites to remove unflattering pics captured of her during her Super Bowl Half Time Performance is a bit much.

I can't give the internet full credit for connecting me with this beautiful soul. We are step-parents...lol. She and I are the mothers of two young twenty somethingers (new word) trying to find their way in life. Our sons met by chance in the military which aligned the stars that guided our paths to the intersection that we now share.

Little did I know what a true star Bella is. I love her sense of style, her intelligence, confidence and vast knowledge about all things beautiful. It's amazing how busy I've already been this year regarding my life list. Karaoke last night. Roses en route to my mom (I ordered them this morning). I've been so busy I almost forgot to share my Labalaba (butterfly) with you.

I wanted the butterfly to be my third tatt because of what this beautiful creature symbolizes. I was moving into my post divorce new home and decided to purchase a few decorative props for my entertainment center. I found an item that had the most beautiful colors - vibrant crimson reds, creams, copper, and green. The sales clerk drew my attention to the butterflies throughout the pattern (I'm terrible about details). When I told her it was for my new home. She went on to share with me how the butterfly is symbolic of new beginnings, new birth, transformation - a resurrection.

Those words spoke to me that day. I was no longer sleeping in the protective confines of a cocoon. I was starting fresh. A new creation with nothing beneath my wings but wind and the prayers of friends and family.

And I'm still soaring....

The Little Things in Life - My First Birchbox

Today is day number seven of a seven night work week. After I lay down and get a few hours of sleep, I'll awake with the joy of knowing that after tonight, I'll be off for seven straight days!!! That in itself is enough to make Mona Lisa smile. But I was even more delighted to come home and find my first Birchbox had finally arrived.

My Christmas in January consisted of a Rose water hydrator spray by Frownies, a deliciously gorgeous Berry pink lip gloss by Model co, a sample of Viva La Juicy (I love Juicy Couture) and a sweet little dessert which I inhaled so fast I can't remember what company is responsible for it's heavenly goodness.

You know what....being a chick has it's perks!!!!

Another One Bites the Dust (potentially)

I pride myself in being a pretty ballsy person. Never been one to stand back waiting on a volunteer. Hell, I am the volunteer. I guess it's part of being an extrovert. Rarely have I ever met a stranger...not to say I haven't met some that were pretty straaaannnnge. But that's a story for another day.

Item #25 on my bucket list is about to be a done deal. Thanks to a local Italian Grill this Thursday night will be my singing debut to the world... or at least to the few friends and oblivious patrons sharing in the fun at Kepler's Karoake.

Please don't be fooled. I'm no song bird...more like a song buzzard...but it's the balls, remember....

Black and White

There's something so breathtaking about black and white images. The duality of their look - old and outdated - yet chic and modern day...at the same time. This picture captured my attention a few days ago. I believe it may have been on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram... it really escapes me now exactly where I saw it. All I know is I immediately loved it.

Is she facing her fears or establishing who's boss. Or are they simply admiring each other's beauty. Whatever the case may be I thought such a powerful photo would be fitting for today.

Today we honor a man who faced his fears and stirred the social conscience of a nation. The older I get the younger and more mortal Dr. King becomes to me.

As a child, staring at his picture - proudly framed on every wall of every house I visited - he seemed old and larger than life. The realization that he was younger than me when he was killed makes his sacrifice even more visceral.

How proud he would have been at the election of this nation's first Black president. How saddened would he be by the fact that the post - racial America he spoke so passionately about is still non-existent.

One of my favorite quotes of his...and there are many....is "the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends towards justice".

President Obama, then a Senator in 2008, elaborated on that quote with these words "It bends towards justice, but here is the thing: it does not bend on its own. It bends because each of us in our own ways put our hand on that arc and we bend it in the direction of justice...."

So, just as I've always done....

Guess Who's Going to School?

A few years back (wow, how time flies) I decided to take part in Rosetta's Reset Your Life Challenge. On day 9, I bit the bullet and started networking with an admissions advisor with one of the many online universities. I was set and ready. OK. Fast forward to nearly two years later (kicking myself because I would have been nearly finished by now) and I'm finally enrolled in my first class.

I'm excited. scared. optimistic. overwhelmed. But more than anything... I'm proud. Proud of the fact that I stopped procrastinating, kept my mind focused on achieving this goal, which by the way is on my life list and am finally on my way. I guess all things in their own time.

Besides, 2011 wasn't my best year.

That was the summer I was hospitalized with a serious heart arrhythmia and thought I was going to be going into the light at any moment for nearly 3 months. Being made unmistakably aware of your own mortality has a way of putting many things into perspective. School was not a priority at the time.

Now is the time. Why? Because I trust that I'm being guided by a higher power than me. Someone who knows when to give me that nudge that I often need to make the changes that will benefit me in the long run.

My virtual, yet real, classmates are turning out to be some really cool people. Nurses from all over the country, young old, new grads, those who received their first degree nearly two decades ago (like me)...all coming together for one common purpose.

Stay tuned. I'm sure I'll have lots to share about this experience. Think of me and send prayers and positive vibes this way. I have no doubt. I will be successful but it's always great to have a cheering section in your corner...

No doubt.... Katherine Webb is a gorgeous young woman but all the hoopla that's been made of this "private" person is mind boggling. A national collegiate football championship game has taken the back seat to Brent Musburger's 73 year old waning testerone inspired rant about how absolutely beautiful she is.

ESPN has issued a formal apology (sorry I'm giggling my ass off). Meanwhile Miss Alabama 2012 has sky rocketed to stardom.... ((waiting on the reality show)).

Miss Webb went from about 2000 Twitter followers pre-game to over 200,000 as of last count this morning.

Well although it's still on my bucket list and I most certainly plan on making my dream a reality, it won't be this year. Alas, I'll ring 2013 in just like I've rang in 2012, 2011, 2010 and... well you get the picture - right here in the confines of my cozy humble abode.

I do have a dear friend that arrived in NYC a few days ago. Every pic she's posted on Facebook, thus far, gives me the impression that she's freezing her arse off...but what I wouldn't give to be suffering from frostbite right beside her Monday night as the countdown begins. I wonder if it will be the same as I remember from years gone by. Ryan Seacrest isn't one of my faves. The network tried to slip him in last year as onlookers gawked and heard the change in our ol' faith infinite teenager, Dick Clark.

I mean what's New Year's Eve in the middle of Timesquare without Dick Clark.

Thank goodness I'm an optimist. I know my moment in the middle of that insanity is coming. Shivering with excitement, Heart pounding as that glowing orb starts to descend.

I will have my moment. But until then.....

Another Christmas spent aiding those infected with influenza, nursing belly aches, cuts, bruises, broken bones and the feelings of depression many are overwhelmed by during this time of year. It's been a long night. Still, I'm thankful to have been here to help make someone's visit to the Emergency room on Christmas Eve/Christmas a little brighter.

I'll be heading home soon. Not expecting anything fancy but giving reverence to the greatest gifts of all - life and love.

Every since my health scare back in 2011 there are certain things my heart simply reacts to in an unhealthy way – palpitations…chest heaviness. Call it a super sensitive heart, anxiety, paranoia or all three… I just can’t do it. Couldn’t bring myself to watch not ONE newscast regarding the shooting.

I accidentally saw photos of some of the “victims” – why God – on Facebook but never lingered more than a few moments. Who could imagine in a thousand millenniums that sending their first graders off to school was the equivalent to sending them to the “showers”, the executioner’s bullseye…..to their deaths….

Assault rifles have no place in society. Period. Mental health issues need to stop being swept under the rug! I’m tired of the killing too.

Every death is senseless but the killing of these babies, I think… I hope …. I pray, will force our law makers to change some things.

The right to bear an assault rifle isn’t a freedom I mind relinquishing.

Apocalyptic To Do List

I've been fascinated, intrigued, even somewhat panicked by the 12/21/2012 date since I heard about the Mayans, their calendar and all the doomsday hoopla that goes along with it.

It seems that people, for the most part, have three takes on it. First the Christian/religious view point is that no MAN knows the day or the hour. So, it's totally ludicrous to them.

Then there's the second theory - it could be and more than likely is true. They're busying themselves stockpiling food, water, supplies and "weapons". I suppose they plan to kill whatever doesn't die when Earth disintegrates.

Finally, the third theory, held by many...... "who cares?" If it's the end, it's just the end. Everything except a circle and numbers has a stopping point, right. So, let's throw a party and go out with a BANG!

What are your thoughts? No...no...no.... Let's make it more fantastical than what you merely think.

For the sake of imagination, thought, and cause I'm bored, consider for a moment that the Mayans were right, how would you spend Friday morning - fearful, calm, prayerful, unchanged, sorrowful. What would you do on the day that would truly be our last?

While you're contemplating whether or not to share I'll tell you what's been going on in my world. Just celebrated my 43rd birthday on yesterday - yippee!! - become totally addicted to Facebook, have been in great health - (the POTS scare was just that, a scare), still smoke free and loving it.

Still divorced - by the way....after 3 years should I just refer to myself as single or are you always divorced...unless of course, you get hitched again. What's politically correct?

Speaking of politics, I have a confession to make - I voted for President Obama, again. But I swear it's the last time I'll be doing that!

Society, stereotypes, biases and assumptions can really play with your mind. This video is an experiment that I, too, failed horribly. In my mind's eye, the young white male, initially, just seemed to have lost his key. I doubt if I would have given him a second glance. However, I immediately felt the young black male was "up to no good". I'm angry with myself for feeling that way...was even angrier with the stark contrast in the people's responses to the situation. But how can I legitimately be upset when I harbor some of the same feelings?
