Book Description

Over 70 percent of Americans cannot afford to own a code-enforced, contractor-built home. This has led to widespread interest in using natural materials-straw, cob, and earth-for building homes and other buildings that are inexpensive, and that rely largely on labor rather than expensive and often environmentally-damaging outsourced materials. Earthbag Building is the first comprehensive guide to all the tools, tricks, and techniques for building with bags filled with earth-or earthbags. Having been introduced to sandbag construction by the renowned Nader Khalili in 1993, the authors developed this "Flexible Form Rammed Earth Technique" over the last decade. A reliable method for constructing homes, outbuildings, garden walls and much more, this enduring, tree-free architecture can also be used to create arched and domed structures of great beauty-in any region, and at home, in developing countries, or in emergency relief work. This profusely illustrated guide first discusses the many merits of earthbag construction, and then leads the reader through the key elements of an earthbag building: Special design considerations Foundations, walls and floors Electrical, plumbing and shelving Lintels, windows and door installations Roofs, arches and domes Exterior and interior plasters. With dedicated sections on costs, making your own specialized tools, and building code considerations, as well as a complete resources guide, Earthbag Building is the long-awaited, definitive guide to this uniquely pleasing construction style. Kaki Hunter and Donald Kiffmeyer have been involved in the construction industry for the last 20 years, specializing in affordable, low-tech, low-impact building methods that are as natural as possible. They developed the "Flexible Form Rammed Earth Technique" of building affordably with earthbags and have taught the subject and contributed their expertise to several books and journals on natural building.

A book superbly presented covering every imaginable detail for construction of earthbag houses. Very practically orientated with excellent appendices and references. This book alone should suffice for your construction needs. Emphasis is on construction in dry arid climates, but temperate zones are considered too. - Amazon Customer

This book is easy to read and gives tips on all the little things that I wouldn't have thought of when thinking of building an earth bag house. It also cleared up many misunderstandings I have had about: the use of sand vs earth; which clays to use as render; natural waterproofing of earth floors; which roof to use in which climate. - Amazon Customer

This is a great 'how to' guide. I feel after reading this that I could build one. They even go into making your own tools step by step. Very good book thoroughly recommended if you are interested in alternative materials. - Amazon Customer

Reviews

The masterpiece. Now upgraded with some 2,800 new terms for a total of 25,000, and 200 new illustrations for a total of 2,500, this book is in its fourth edition.

Architecture and Construction like any profession has developed it's own terminology its own jargon. An outsider coming into the field is faced with a daunting task just to be able to communicate with the professionals in the business.

The dictionary is designed to be comprehensive in scope. Its range spans terms encountered in the practiceof architecture from Classical to green, from traditional materials to the latest products, from precise definitions of architectural styles to the particulars of specification writing.

In addition to the physical construction terms, the dictionary covers ancillary areas such as electrical, fire, security, waste disposal, water supply. In short the dictionary covers every specialized word, every specialized meaning of standard words that are to be encountered in the building of a building of any size from house to cathedral.

Simply put, this is the standard of the industry.

This book is the most complete I have ever come across, and extremely easy to use. The illustrations (2500) and terms (26000) are well-described and easy to use, yet concise. As a Project Manager for a General Contractor, I find this book extremely handy in the construction world. Working with an Architect on a daily basis, I find myself using it several times per day sometimes. You can never learn every term in architecture and construction, but this book will help you learn those unfamiliar words we come across every single day in construction and architecture.

In the very near future energy-efficient building will be the rule rather than the exception. Insulating glazing, multi-functional facades and organic solar cells are examples of important new developments in the field of solar thermal technology, photo-voltaics, heating and ventilation technology which are suitable for a wide range of uses from large-scale urban-planning projects to individual single family houses, and can make significant contributions to the conservation of natural resources in sustainable building. Carefully selected articles provide information on planning methods and techniques which will enable the user to assess and apply appropriate measures. The essays are complemented by a selection of built examples which demonstrate innovative solutions and the importance of an integrated planning process in realized projects, complete with full plans and large scale details.

A professional reference designed to assist surveyors, engineers, architects and contractors in diagnosing existing problems and avoiding them in new buildings. Fully revised and updated, this edition, in new clearer format, covers developments in building defects, and problems such as sick building syndrome. Well liked for its mixture of theory and practice the new edition will complement Hinks and Cook's student textbook on defects at the practitioner level.

Book Description

Daylighting offers a general theory and introduction to the use of natural light in architecture.

The fourth of Derek Phillip's lighting books draws on his experience to illustrate how best to bring natural light into building design. As sustainability becomes a core principal for designers, daylighting comes to the fore as an alternative to artificial, energy consuming, light. Here, Phillips makes a rational argument for considering daylight first, outlining the arguments in favour of a daylight approach, and goes on to show, through a series of

beautifully illustrated case studies, how architects have created buildings in which natural light has been shown to play a major strategic role in the development of the design of a building.

* Learn how to incorporate daylight into a wide range of building design types

* Be informed about the most 'sustainable' of lighting techniques

* International case studies including examples from the UK, Hong Kong and USA inspire the reader and illustrate best practice

Format: PDF

Book Description

Addressing the interactions between the different design and construction variables and techniques this book illustrates best practices for constructing economical, long life concrete pavements.

The book proceeds in much the same way as a pavement construction project. First, different alternatives for concrete pavement solutions are outlined. The desired performance and behaviour parameters are identified. Next, appropriate materials are outlined and the most suitable concrete proportions determined. The design can be completed, and then the necessary construction steps for translating the design into a durable facility are carried out. Although the focus reflects highways as the most common application, special features of airport, industrial, and light duty pavements are also addressed.

Use is made of modeling and performance tools such as HIPERPAV and LTPP to illustrate behavior and performance, along with some case studies. As concrete pavements are more complex than they seem, and the costs of mistakes or of over-design can be high, this is a valuable book for engineers in both the public and private sectors.

Book Description

This book is a critical reappraisal of contemporary theories of urban planning and design and of the role of the architect-planner in an urban context. The authors rejecting the grand utopian visions of "total planning" and "total design," propose instead a "collage city" which can accommodate a whole range of utopias in miniature.

Reviews

"Coming upon this book in rather a skeptical state of mind, I must say I found it intriguing, enlightening, brilliant, witty, and exasperating as it pursued its thesis with a species of grammatical acrobatics that I can only call arresting. This is a book about the ideologies of modern architecture, their philosophical origins, their manifestations, and the ways in which they are flawed. It is a book about architects who had and have conceptions about the ideal city, and it tries to reorient those conceptions from the utopia of a single vision to a more multivalent view of city form." Donald Appleyard APA Journal

Book Description

For a number of years, the healthy and environment-friendly building material earth, in common use for thousands of years, has been enjoying increasing popularity, including in industrialized nations. In hot dry and temperate climate zones, earth offers numerous advantages over other materials. Its particular texture and composition also holds great aesthetic appeal. The second and revised edition of this handbook offers a practical systematic overview of the many uses of earth and techniques for processing it. Its properties and physical characteristics are described in informed and knowledgeable detail. The author s presentation reflects the rich and varied experiences gained over thirty years of building earth structures all over the world. Numerous photographs of construction sites and drawings show the concrete execution of earth architecture.

About The Author

Prof. Dr. Gernot Minke is a professor at Universität Kassel, where he leads the Forschungslabor für Experimentelles Bauen. He has long concerned himself with developments in ecological building, and he has dealt with the building material clay in theory and practice since 1977. His book Building with Straw was also published by Birkhäuser.

This Gernot Mink's book is a great purchase. Its a practical technician book, with all needed information about buinding with loan, clavey soil, prefabricated panels, etc.. I think it is designed to builders and architects, but it is very easy to understand and can be read by everyone. - Amazon Customers

As a professional natural builder with about a dozen straw/clay and straw bale structures under my belt, I have to say that Gernot Minke's work is thorough, informative and inspiring. This book resides in a happy place on my reference shelf. It would be great if we had the same building research laboratory work going on here in the states. I would love to sit down with Gernot over a couple of craft brews! - Amazon Customers

Book Description

From the very beginning of architecture-long before the invention of masonry-buildings were constructed of wood. With its unique qualities of form, color, and structure, wood is the most reliable building material at the core of architecture. This epic history is the first comprehensive survey of the use of wood in architecture throughout the ages. The book is organized both chronologically and geographically. It surveys works from the oldest heritage of wooden buildings (Kyoto's Buddhist temples and Scandinavia's pagan-inspired stave churches) to the latest cutting-edge designs, proving that wood is on the rise as the preferred material in these ecologically conscious times. No region of the world with a native tradition of building with wood is left out. In North America, the book demonstrates the European origins of New England's clapboards and saltboxes, and later shows how such sophisticated California architects as Greene & Greene or Bernard Maybeck could blend age-old traditions of the Far East and Switzerland with a Pacific Coast sense of novelty and whimsy. Spectacular and diverse photographs highlight the architectural masterpieces of wooden architecture throughout the world, illustrating that wood is a building material with a deep history as well as a vibrant future.

Will Pryce is an award-winning photographer who trained as an architect at Cambridge University and the Royal College of Art, London. His most recent book, in collaboration with James Campbell, is the hugely acclaimed Brick: A World History.

Reviews

Rizolli mastered the architecture coffee-table tome years ago: large, cleanly-designed, beautifully-photographed books are undeniably seductive on the bookstore shelf, and look great in the living room, but rarely inspire any lasting interest or contribute meaningfully to our understanding of human settlement. I am happy to recommend Will Pryce's book not because it hues to the Rizolli model, but because it's actually a good read, too. And the merging of great pictures with informative text proves to be far more potent than either alone. The book has no thesis per se, but it does a laudable job of presenting the stunning variety of world building in wood. The pictures show one startling regional type after another, and the text stitches the diverse whole into something coherent, fascinating, and illuminating. Architecture picture books have always been tainted by insipid, often illiterate prose. Mr Pryce has shown a scholarly, readable, informative alternative. - Amazon Customer Review

This is the perfect coffee-table book on wooden architecture. The color photography is excellent. It does not pretend to be thorough, but does provide an excellent sampling of wooden architecture across time and across geography. The text is helpful, but not scholarly. In addition to many familiar wood structures there were a large number of wonderful buildings with which I was unfamilar. If you are looking for a glorious set of color photographs of wooden architecture, this is the book for you. - Amazon Customer Review

Reviews

I'm reading the 5 th edition and find it useful as a Building Construction Engineer. I particularily like the upfront material on project planning. The book is not overly simplistic, nor unnecssarily complicated. It refers the reader to other sources that are useful tools as well. There is a mound of material since the book exceed 1000 pages. I highly recommend this book for a practicing professional or a greenhorn in the ICI building construction industry. I wouldn't pay $1000 for the book, but it is cetrainly worth a couple of hundred dollars. - Amazon Customer Review

This is a technical handbook that provides design and construction info for general building construction, especially commercial design.
While so much of civil engr handbooks concerns civil works and structures, this handbook is complementary. It has excellent summaries that are organized along 16 categories used in modern U S commercial building codes. For example, its sections on roofing systems, HVAC, electrical systems, etc. would not be found in civil engr handbooks nor covered as thoroughly in architectural handbooks.
The 2001 edition, purchased in 2004, was a bargain at less than $50. - Amazon Customer Review

I'm a big fan of this 6th edition. It is one of those "go to" resources -- containing a ton of information, intelligently organized, with hundreds of useful illustrations. 4.7 pounds!
Suggestion: click on the image and look at the Table of Contents. That will tell you a lot. - Amazon Customer Review

Book Description

"This book is a timely and important tool for the empowerment of communities facing housing deficits. The Red Feather project is extremely important; it is truly making a difference."—Jane Goodall

For more than a decade the Red Feather Development Group, a volunteer-based organization, has built and repaired straw bale houses for Native Americans. Somewhere along the way—and this was certainly not the plan—they created an architectural phenomenon: This inexpensive, environmentally sound, easily constructed, and downright beautiful form of building has, for good reason, caught the public's imagination. Here, Red Feather provides a step-by-step, easy-to-follow manual for would-be strawbale builders—indeed, they supply everything you'll need but time, energy, and lots and lots of straw. Informative sections on safety, design, tools, and materials, and case studies picked from over thirty-five Red Feather projects give a comprehensive overview to straw-bale building.

But this book is much more than a construction manual. It is also the inspiring story of Red Feather itself, a tale of community action and cooperation that suggests a can-do solution to the growing housing crisis on America's Native American reservations.

Book Description

RIBA Book of British Housing Design looks at the design solutions developed during the 20th and the 21st centuries, and illustrates over 200 of the most successful projects. It provides an overview of the evolution of housing development, and includes present day schemes and estate regeneration as well as special sections on housing in Scotland and Northern Ireland. The photographs and plans of historic and contemporary projects can be used to show design approaches to clients, committees and, in the case of regeneration, with local communities. Looking back into history will indicate which design approaches have been successful.

This fully updated 2nd edition includes a new chapter on the development of design concepts and projects built since 1999. It illustrates current trends that have been developing since the turn of the new century, and emphasises the concept of creating sustainable communities. The use of colour photographs adds a new dimension to the first edition in making it possible to appreciate more readily the materials used in the design of the housing and its environment.

Format: PDF

Book Description

Together with the National Library of Ireland, Architectural Press presents seventy previously unpublished drawings by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

The identification in the National Library of Ireland of three sketchbooks, from which these drawings have been selected, represents a significant addition to the body of early drawings by Mackintosh. The sketches date from a crucial period in the young man's development, spanning his highly successful student years and the beginnings of his professional career. Each of the three sketchbooks covers an area central to his growth as an artist: the architecture of his native Scotland, an important scholarship journey in Italy and, Mackintosh's first love and greatest influence, the study of plants and growing things.

Essentially private, these little known and unique works provide privileged access to significant moments in the artist's intellectual and emotional life. In this book Elaine Grogan attempts to take them out of the library display-case and bring them to life in the hands of the reader. She invites us to look over Mackintosh's shoulder on his early tentative steps towards fulfilment as a creative genius. Connections are traced, both backwards in time to his training and forwards to his great successes and eventual bitter eclipse.

* Gain a new understanding of a crucial period in Charles Rennie Mackintosh's development through these unpublished sketches

* Connect his sketch books of Scotland, Italy and botany to later great works

* Be inspired by these private, yet significant sketches

Book Description

On behalf of the SB05Tokyo Student Session Organising Committee, I would like to welcome you allto Tokyo and to the first attempt of a student session in the series of Sustainable BuildingConferences. We initiated this event based on the brief that it could create networks between youngarchitects and researchers in the field of Sustainable Building, and that the networks could act as anessential catalyst for forming a better, less unsustainable future. Under the slogan of "building a sustainable future", the SB05Tokyo Student Session has attractedmore than 120 participants with no fewer than 34 nationalities. With the help of quite a few expertsand fellow Student Session participants, the SB05 Student Session Organising Committee, a groupof 29 students from 9 Japanese universities and 11 countries, has prepared this event with a rangeof activities such as Plenary Session on SB International Comparison, Design Workshop, Discussion-based Workshops, Activity-based Workshops, Poster Session and Walking Tours. Along with the preparation for these activities, the Organisers for the Plenary Session on SBInternational Comparison and the Design Workshop have dreamed up the idea of publishing aDesign Book with works of fellow international participants and some of the best examples ofSustainable Building in Japan. Accordingly, the Committee decided to publish this book to distributeto the participants of the SB05Tokyo Student Session and the SB05Tokyo main conference.Lastly I would like to show my sincere appreciation for the architects and students from all over theworld who have kindly provided us such a wonderful work of theirs. I truly hope this book could helpinspire our fellow young architects and researchers, and could contribute to build a sustainable future.

As an architecture student and avid collector of books concerning architecture i was about to order this book from Amazon. But browsing through the selection of images i was very much put off by the big caption 'Neutelings Riedjik' which is supposed to be Neutelings Riedijk.
It comes across very amateurish and it makes me wonder if the writer of this book has an idea of the content he is writing about and isn't just collection nice photographs of famous dutch offices. - Amazon Customer Review

I bought this book for someone interested in Real Estate, and I didnt know what kind of souvenier to bring them from my trip to the Netherlands. It has plenty of beautiful photos of some great buildings, inside and out. It has descriptions too. - Amazon Customer Review

This book introduces you to several pieces of work from many architects from Japan. I enjoyed reading this as it gave a detailed explanation of the buildings, the only thing it lacks is plans and sections, but a worthwhile read - Amazon Customer Review

Reviews

Although I have quite a few other books by Jodidio (amoung them the Architecture Now series - great, by the way), I didn't have any expectations for this book. I was pleasantly surprised. The book covers some of the work of smaller name architects (at least from my perspective in N. America). Very interesting work covered. I especially liked the simple, but brilliant "Tower Flower" by Edouard Francois - large built-in greenery on a nine- story apartment building. However, some of the complex and convoluted buildings could have used a floor plan to help understand the scheme of the building a little better. A few architects' work(s) are simple computer generated models of works in progress, but they effectively portray the buildings. Given the state of architecture in general, I was pleasantly surprised to see a strong representation of women in this group of architects. Does this represent the "Architecture in ... " series by Jodidio, or does it represent France? I will be getting more of this series to see what new and interesting in the other countries covered. I like the three language format as well, allowing me to maintain my French and German while enjoying architecture. No complaints about the quality of the physical book either (paper, binding, printing).

Book Description

This work, winner of the 1992 American Institute of Architects Award, surveys two and a half decades of architectural projects in Europe. It begins with the completion of the first commissions embodying the ideas that sprang out of the exuberant events of 1968, and ends with the official unification of Europe. It contributes to contemporary debates on architecture and should be useful as a source reference.

Format: PDF

Book Description

This book is a collection of detailed studies of recent construction projects that will help all architects learn and expand the possibilities of their own work. Projects have been selected for their use of innovative techniques, and these insights could help overcome problems, reduce a project’s cost, speed up work on site or help with an idea that is hard to achieve.

Each project within the book consists of striking detailed drawings, supplemented by color photographs and explanatory text. These details are an excellent way to see how others are using new materials and techniques that may be relevant to an architect’s own work.

It can seem daunting for a student, or even a qualified architect, to see high-quality, interesting buildings when the project or daily workload is a lot more humdrum. This book demystifies construction and spreads knowledge of good practice.

The author is well known as he has a biweekly feature in Building Design, the UK’s most read magazine by architects. The projects have been carefully selected from those published and have been adapted and expanded to create a really useful reference.

Reviews

A book that is essential reading, especially as it considers the 'why' as well as the 'what' of sustainable architecture.
Lord Rogers of Riverside

With ecological sustainability now on the curriculum for all the RIBA recognized courses in architecture this book could become essential reading for students. It would also be very attractive to practitioners who seek a useful, easily digestible, "handbook" to this field.
Paul Hyett, RIBA President

'A book from an authority such as Peter Smith is welcome and deserves to be read for the amount of information packed into its 200 pages.'
The Architectural Review

'This book is really two publications in one. It contains both a well-researched and dispassionate overview of energy and climate, combined with a thorough account of acheiving energy efficiency in buildings. It is also incredibly up to date...If budgets only extend to one book then this book is it.'

Format: PDF

Book Description

This well illustrated text forms a critical appraisal of the place and direction of architecture and urban design in a new world order at the start of the 21st century.

The book defines architectural and environmental goals for the New Age by analysing recent contemporary work for its responsiveness to important social and environmental issues and comparing it to successful precedents in architecture. It argues that this new sustainable approach to architecture should be recognised as a new development of mainstream architectural history.

This practical guide illustrates current social and natural resource issues to aid architects in their approach to future design.

Environmental economics is presented as a potential bridge over the divide between the expectations of the business sector and the concerns of environmental lobbies. Through examples and case studies, an accessible analysis of carefully researched data, drawn from primary sources over four continents, allows the author to outline the current urgency for architects and urban designers to respond with real commitment to current and future changing contexts.

This book expresses a holistic vision and proposes a value system in response to the diagnosis. It includes: sound architectural and environmental ethics; end user involvement in the design process and technological advances aimed at sustainable resource use.

Includes international case studies from Europe, North America, the Developing world including South Africa, South America and Central Asia.

About The Author

Derek Thomas resides in Cape Town, South Africa. A graduate of the Oxford School of Architecture UK and holder of a masters degree in environmental science from the University of Cape Town, he has been in architectural practice for 40 years and is a registered member of the respective professional institutes. More recently he has forged a new career as a writer on architectural and environmental issues of our times. The author's experience in finding responsive architectural and ecological solutions in his own country adequately equips him to write on the need to address the global paradigm shifts in cultural life and imperatives arising from climate change and excessive deployment of natural resources.During the 1990s the author was commissioned as architect and environmental planner for major housing projects : by a Garden Cities development company for middle-income housing on sites within metropolitan Cape Town; and by the Candidate City, Cape Town for the athletes' and media villages for the 2004 Olympic Games. A handbook written by the author on the generic requirements for the Olympic villages is assisting candidate cities in their future bids to host the Games. In recognition of this work, the author is registered as a researcher in the directory of the Centre for Olympic Studies in Barcelona. The author's current book Architecture and the Urban Environment : A Vision for the New Age is a summation of his abiding interest in architecture in the context of a changing world.

An introduction to architectural thought, this text is a thorough and accessible discussion in search of the principles of the design process.

Documenting the non-verbal processes and decisions that architects and designers make is a difficult task, but one that is important when trying to understand the development of architectural design through the ages. Michael Brawne uses his experience as a practicing architect, academic and educator to provide an overview of the subject. By looking at the practices and buildings of architects past and present he incorporates history and philosophy in the search for a theory of design.
