UTICA, Mich. – The Birmingham Bloomfield Beavers (8-5) used a dominant performance on the mound and a four-run fifth inning to defeat the Utica Unicorns (8-7), 5-1, on Thursday night at UWM Field.

After four scoreless innings, the Beavers broke through in the bottom of the fifth. With runners on base, Matt Piotrowski delivered the biggest swing of the night, launching a three-run home run to put the Beavers in front. Piotrowski finished 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs, leading the Beavers’ offense.

The Beavers collected nine hits in the victory, with Tommy Barth and David Coppedge each recording two-hit performances. Barth also stole two bases, while Coppedge added a double.

On the mound, Blake Johnson was outstanding. The right-hander tossed six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out seven to earn the win. Birmingham’s bullpen combined to limit the Unicorns to just one run over the final three innings.

The Unicorns managed only two hits all game and struck out 10 times. Their lone run came in the seventh inning, but the Beavers answered with an insurance run in the eighth to seal the victory.

The Saltdogs momentum was short-lived as Winnipeg plated four runs in the top of the seventh. Facing Lincoln relief pitcher Jack Hall, Keshawn Lynch doubled with one out, then took third on a wild pitch. Kevin Garcia singled, scoring Lynch, to make it 5-1. Garcia stole second. Then, T.J. Schofield-Sam doubled, scoring Garcia, to make it a 6-1 score. Then, Ray-Patrick Didder singled, bringing it Schofield-Sam, to make it a 7-1 game. Two batters later, Ramon Bramasco singled, plating Didder, to make it an 8-1 contest, which turned out to be the final score.

The Sussex County Miners (15-19) dropped a tough one at Skylands Stadium on Thursday night, falling 6-3 to the Trois-Rivières Aigles (10-24) after a ninth inning surge by the Aigles which proved to be the difference.

The Aigles struck first with a two run second inning, but the Miners were able to respond in the bottom of the inning cutting the deficit to 2-1 off a sac fly RBI from Berkey. Trois-Rivières would strike again in the top of the 4th with a solo shot by Connor Hicks.

From there, both starting pitchers would settle into the game and neither team were able to generate consistent momentum through the middle innings. Miners would tie the game late in the bottom of the 8th off of a Sean Roby Jr. 2-run home run which energized the Miners’ faithful heading into the final inning.

Parker Primeaux came in to relieve Garcia in the top of the 9th for the Miners, which started with a walk and two quick outs. However, the Aigles then mounted a two out rally, with doubles from both Rodriguez and Montes, which turned the game upside down for the Miners, allowing 3 runs with two outs.

Sussex County’s offense showed flashes of promise with seven hits, but they struggled to consistently string together hits to break through against the Aigles pitching, leaving runners on base at crucial moments. mostly due to Gollert’s beautiful performance on the mound, the Aigles once again stifled the red hot bats of the Miners.

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Lexington Legends hit three home runs and their pitching staff held the Rockers to five hits as the Legends took a 7-1 decision Thursday night at Truist Point.

Yuhi Sako got the ball for the Rockers and turned in a solid start, only surrendering two runs on six hits while striking out six.

Nic Laio earned the victory on the hill for the Legends. The big right hander turned in 5.2 stellar innings of scoreless baseball, surrendering two hits to the Rocker offense.

Dylan Rock, Damiano Palmegiani and Gabe Howell all homered in the Lexington victory.

DJ Burt moved into sole possession of the all-time Rockers stolen base record with his 112th career stolen base, surpassing former Rocker Ben Aklinski.

It took a rain delay to wake the offense up in this one. What was a scoreless game until the delay in the fifth inning, quickly changed as Rock clubbed a two run homer off Sako to give Lexington a 2-0 lead in the sixth.

Palmegiani crushed a three-run homer in the seventh that quickly took the Rockers out of striking distance. The homer was the first in a Legends uniform for Palmegiani.

Ethan Skender got the Rockers on the board in the eighth, lacing an RBI single that plated Ivan Melendez from third and pulled the Rockers to within 5-1.

Lexington tacked on another pair of runs in the ninth on a two-run homer off the bat of Howell that gave his squad a late 7-1 lead and eventually the victory.

High Point falls to 22-29 as Lexington moves to 22-29. Game four of this six game set is slated to start Friday night at 6:35 pm at Trust Point. Rockers will send southpaw Ben Wereski (0-1) to the hill opposed by Lexington’s Jimmy Loper (3-3). Rocker fans can follow the action live on HomeTeamLive.com (DugoutTV) or the audio broadcast on the free app MixLR.

Lincoln, Nebraska- Jacob Hughes struck out seven batters over six innings, recording a quality start in his Lincoln debut, Wednesday night at Haymarket Park, and the Saltdogs defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes, 8-3. At one point, Hughes retired nine straight Goldeyes, plus, got help from Cary Arbolida who hit a two-run home run. The Saltdogs have now won five straight home games, and after taking the first two games of the series with the Goldeyes, they will attempt to claim a sweep over Winnipeg, on Thursday night.

Lincoln (12-17) scored eight runs, off six hits, committed no errors, and left two runners on base. Winnipeg (12-18) had three runs, with six hits, with one error, and left seven runners aboard. The game clicked along at two hours and twenty-seven minutes and was played in front of 2,508 fans at Haymarket Park. With the victory, Lincoln moved into a tie for fourth place in the American Association West Division, with the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks.

Winnipeg started the scoring in the top of the first. Facing Lincoln starting pitcher, Jacob Hughes, Noah Marcelo hit a two-out, solo home run to left field, to make it 1-0, the Goldeyes.

The Saltdogs responded in the bottom of the first. Facing Winnipeg starting pitcher James Bradwell, Cam Phelts led off the inning with a single, then stole second, and third. Two batters later, Jake Hjelle drew a walk. Then, Jairo Pomares hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Phelts, to make it a 1-1 tie. Connor Bagnieski reached on a base on balls. Then, Cary Arbolida put Lincoln in front with a single, scoring Hjelle, to make it a 2-1, Lincoln lead.

The Goldeyes tied the game in the top of the second. Max Murphy led off the inning with a walk. Then, Kevin Garcia drew a base on balls. Jiandido Tromp reached on a fielder’s choice, putting runners at first and third, with one out. Then, a wild pitch scored Murphy to tie the score at 2-2.

Lincoln fetched the lead, for good, in the bottom of the second. Paul Myro led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch. Then, Jacob Morrow singled. Cam Phelts laid down a sacrifice bunt and the throw to first sailed high, allowing both Myro and Morrow to score. The next batter, Nick Shumpert grounded out to third, which scored Phelts, to make it a 5-2 Lincoln lead.

The Saltdogs added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Facing Winnipeg relief pitcher Kevin Vaupal, Jairo Pomares doubled, with two outs. Then, Connor Bagnieski singled, scoring Pomares. The next batter, Cary Arbolida, hit a two-run home run to center field, his fourth of the season, to make it an 8-2 Saltdogs lead.

Winnipeg got a run back in the top of the eighth. Facing Lincoln relief pitcher Harold Cortijo, Noah Marcelo hit his second home run of the night, a solo blast to left-center field, to make the score, 8-3, which would turn out to be the final tally.

Lincoln starter Jacob Hughes (1-0) earned the victory with a quality start, working 6.0 innings, giving up two runs, off four hits, struck out seven and walked three. Harold Cortijo pitched 2.0 innings, yielding one run, off two hits, struck out one, and walked one. David Shaw pitched the ninth inning and hit one batter.

Goldeyes starter James Bradwell (0-1) took the loss, pitching 2.0 innings, giving up five runs, three earned, off three hits, struck out three, and walked two. Kevin Vaupal pitched 4.0 innings, yielding three runs, three hits, and struck out five. Quinn Waterhouse pitched 1.0 inning and struck out one. Dominic Hambley worked 1.0 inning and walked one.

Offensively for the Saltdogs, Cam Phelts was 1-for-4. Nick Shumpert was 0-for-4 with an RBI. Jairo Pomares and Connor Bagnieski were both 1-for-3 with an RBI. Cary Arbolida was 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and three runs batted in.

For Winnipeg, Noah Marcelo was 2-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs.

The final game of the series is Thursday night at Haymarket Park. RHP Haden Erbe (2-1, 5.61 ERA) will pitch for Lincoln. LHP Ryo Kohigashi (0-1, 3.47 ERA) will be on the mound for the Goldeyes. First pitch will be 6:35 p.m. The game will be broadcast on KFOR 101.5 FM/1240 AM and on: www.aabaseball.tv.
