In his 2D experimental basketball puzzle platformer, the player explores the land and sky of Paris to save sibling Belle.

Recalling my time with what I played at GDC, the music also was connected to the gameplay. Molinari said it is reactive, "so as you play, instruments are added and taken away. For example, dribbling is automatic and is synced to the bass drum, so when you shoot, the bass drops out and you're left with just the highs until the ball lands again."

BasketBelle will release as a standalone on Windows and Mac. Linux users must settle for a .SWF+.HTML build, given the game was built on Flash. BasketBelle will also release with extras, including the soundtrack, concept art with liner notes, and some sort of documentary about its creation.

When I asked if the character would get to slam dunk on the Eiffel Tower, Molinari replied, "There's a good chance you won't be disappointed!" Molinari told me he's releasing the game tentatively at the beginning of July and is thinking about submitting to Steam. So, be sure to sound off in the comments below if you want this game on any online platform, as consumer interest helps with submissions.

When Eerie Canal, a new independent studio formed by veterans from Harmonix and Irrational, announced its first game Dreadline, the developer conceded it was a risky concept that likely no big game publisher would touch.

Set to release early next year, the RPG/real-time-strategy PC game tasks players with controlling a squad of time-travelling monsters as they crash into historical calamities (e.g. sinking of the Titanic), and slaughter mobs of people already doomed to die. It's a speedrun-focused title, too, and will presumably reward players who kill efficiently.

Dreadline is meant to be a humorous title, as evidenced by its absurd characters and its silly slogan -- "where time is running out for those that have run out of time" -- but when details of the game appeared on consumer sites, some immediately took offense.

Critics condemned Dreadline for making light of real-life tragedies, with one remarking, "Maybe it's 'cool' to lack empathy for the victims of horrible disasters." Some even jested that Eerie Canal would be tasteless enough to design a World Trade Center/9-11 stage for the game.

"I do think the game's concept is in bad taste in a way," Eerie Canal co-founder Bryn Bennett admits to Gamasutra. "I mean, we are making jokes about terrible times in history. Hopefully there has been enough time between the events we cover and now that it's acceptable."

He adds, "We knew this game would be polarizing in a number of different ways. It looks different than most games. The content is different than most games. People are going to love it and people are going to hate it. We're ok with that. It's not going to sell a billion copies, but we're such a small team, it doesn't matter."

Screenshot from an alpha build of Dreadline

Bennett's last employer, Rock Band series developer Harmonix, wasn't known for games with violent or controversial content, but that's part of the reason why the company's former lead programmer left, so he could work on "creative and inspired games that are too risky for large studios."

He formed Boston's Eerie Canal with Steven Kimura, who was a lead artist at Harmonix, late last year. "We have been working in the industry for quite a while, and we were getting pretty burned out," says Bennett. "Personally, I felt like I joined this industry so that I could be creative, and ended up in the opposite situation."

They were soon joined by other "misfit musician game developers" from Harmonix, but the team's first project is far from the rhythm title one would expect given its history with the genre. Bennett notes, however, that he and Kimura built RTSes like Freedom Force in the past when they served as the lead programmer and lead artist respectively at Irrational Games.

"Plus, I worked on something like five-plus rhythm games at Harmonix. Time for something new!" says Bennett. And though that something new has drawn some early controversy, he says that won't affect how the group proceeds with the project -- a luxury Eerie Canal can afford as a small, self-funded indie.

Bennett argues that big game companies play everything way too safe. "I've been in way too many meetings where a bunch of creative people would come up with a crazy idea and love it, and then say "OK... but for real... what should we do." Honestly, I think we should have stayed with the original idea. That's what we're doing."

He compared Dreadline to The Gashlycrumb Tinies, Edward Gorey's macabre but comical book illustrating the deaths of 26 children. "The humor is very dark, but the artwork keeps it palatable and abstract," he points out. "That book would be absolutely horrifying if handled another way."

Eerie Canal looks to take a similar approach. "This is something, I'm sure, we're going to have to struggle with until the end of the project," Bennett admits. "I mean, you're controlling a group of monsters who are doing absolutely terrible things to people. We have been very careful to make the monsters as 'lovable' as possible, and to keep the violence cartoony."

As for creating a 9-11 stage, that's not going to happen. "There are a lot of modern events we would never touch. We're not trying to offend anyone. The idea of a terrible calamity happening, but it getting even worse is just funny. If you were going down in a ship, but a werewolf jumped out and bit you... it's just so stupid and over the top."

"We're all afraid of dying," he continues. "I'm just surprised that this cartoon way of death is what bothered people while photorealistic games are completely accepted. There are games about current wars that are out now, that I, personally, would consider far more offensive."

MiG Madness keeps its objectives simple: players must shoot down squadrons of enemy planes and collect power-ups throughout dozens of waves of increasing difficulty.

A number of tweaks and additions make it a worthy expansion to the Time Pilot formula; the game features multiple secondary weapon pick-ups, a day-night cycle, and a four-player co-op mode. I had a lot of fun with it, and it's worth a look if you enjoyed games like Time Pilot and MiniSquadron.

MiG Madness is priced at 80 Microsoft points.

In the beginning, Mythaumatology was supposed to be part of the AGS Bake Sale. However, it soon became a little bit too big and a little bit too graphic-intensive to fit into whatever constraints that had been imposed. As such, it eventually fell on the wayside. Fortunately for fans of the genre, it looks like the developer Ghost has decided to rekindle the flames yet again.

A quick recap for those who might not have heard of the game before. Mythaumatology is the tale of a little, purple-skined girl who awakes with neither her memory nor her clothes. Set within the gaslight fantasy world of Saga, a realm occupied by human beings who have made magic into a simple tool, Mythaumatology will have you ... actually, I'm not sure where this is headed at all. Either way, this looks to be an interesting endeavor to follow.

On the whole, adventure games, in spite of their tendency to be plagued with death, tend to be on the wholesome side of things. Sex is seldom a major component. Kinky Island is looking to shake that stereotype up a little. Originally conceived as a joke, this game first took life as a freeware project. It was only later, after the developers realized there was a fair bit of interest in the game, that it became a full-fledged endeavor.

There's a fair number of goodies available to those willing to pour a few bucks into the game. And if all goes well, it looks like Kinky Island will be available for play sometime this Christmas. Check out the IndieGoGo page here.

Headlining the bundle is Ice Pick Lodge's cult classic action-adventureThe Void, available for Windows on Steam, Desura, and DRM-free. In this beautifully art-directed first-person game from the Russian creators of Pathologic, you must guide your lost soul through the Void, a space trapped between life and death. Use color as your health and ammo as you discover the dark secrets hidden by the beautiful Sisters and monstrous Brothers. PC Gamer UK called The Void, "An astounding world, and a flagship for the imagination and capability of independent game developers." Clash with golems, bloodthirsty predators and other spawn of the Void as you fight for your lost soul.

Next up is CSR Studios' retro zombie side-scrolling shooter Dead Pixels, available for the first time ever on Windows for Desura and DRM-free. In this conversion of the hit 8-bit style Xbox Live Indie Games title, a toxic waste spill has found its way into the water supply and the dead have risen from their graves. Take on waves of zombies as you make your way to salvation before it's too late. The city is never the same twice, so there's always something hiding around the corner! Featuring 22 types of zombies to blast, upgradable weapons and items, and all the free additions from the XBLIG version, such as the "Last Stand" and "The Solution" game modes, it's time to get your boomstick ready.

Also featured is Outerlight's first-person, multiplayer-centric nautical action game The Ship, available for Windows on Steam only, and with each copy coming with two extra Steam keys to send to your friends! (Those copies each have one extra gift activation too!) Set in a 1920s cruise ship, players must murder their assigned target while at the same time avoiding the player hunting them. Be careful not to be spotted murdering your victim, or it's off to jail. Use all the weapons at your disposal, including crowbars, swords, flare guns, and many more. Featuring a unique bonus single-player story and an addictive online mode, Source Engine title The Ship is unlike any other first-person experience.

The bundle also includes The Odd Man Out's illuminating puzzle platformer 1000 Amps, available for Windows and Mac on Steam, Desura and DRM-Free. As Plug, you are charged with restoring the expansive Amp-Tree-System. You light up whatever you touch, and Rock Paper Shotgun says of the game, "It's witty in its minimalist design, its use of sound cues is exemplary, the jumping is pixel perfect, and the ability to put a smile on my face with every single completed room is a joyous thing." Solve puzzles and teleport to new areas to bring light to the whole world!

Rounding out the bundle is Monster Jail Games' eccentric Metroidvania-ish 8-bit platformer LaserCat, available for Windows on Desura and DRM-free. Explore the castle of the evil Wizzord, as you search for the keys littered throughout the world. Featuring wacky trivia questions and a little cat ghost left behind every time you die, LaserCat has an uncommonly good sense of humor, with cues taken from games old (Jet Set Willy) and new (VVVVVV).

Included in the bundle is a special exclusive bonus, a Steam Beta key to hot F2P action-RTS AirMech with Indie Royale-only in-game item code - the Graduation Cap (+5% persistent XP)! The much-hyped AirMech is in closed beta on Steam right now, making these codes very hard to come by, so infinite thanks to Carbon Games for partnering with us to offer these keys to all our valued customers. (And we'll be unlocking one more game for all buyers during the bundle itself - watch our social media feeds for info!)

Finally, those who pay $7 USD or their currency equivalent during the Graduation Bundle get Cheap Dinosaurs' self-titled album in .FLAC and HQ .MP3 - the long-awaited first official release from the chiptune prog rockers, and normally a $6 value on its own.

More information on the Graduation Bundle, including real-time statistics and its current price, is available at its official website or via its Facebook and Twitter pages. And a final reminder - the more buyers, the more the price will increase, unless kind buyers drop the price for everyone else, so hop on and buy soon to avoid disappointment!

Ninja the Explorer sees you playing the role of a ninja on a mysterious island, out to slay a god. To reach your ultimate foe, you must navigate to the north-west corner of the island. There are multiple routes to be taken with an option to exit each screen to the north or west, provided you are not on the edge of the map. You cannot backtrack to the south or east.

Each screen provides various hazards, ranging from robots that will move from wall to wall if you walk in front of them to birds and other ninjas that will seek you out if they get close enough. Press C to interact, use your sword at close range or hold it down to charge up and perform a dash attack. For an extra challenge, you can also attempt to collect as many coins as possible.

Ninja the Explorer is firmly rooted in eras past, where backstories were lovingly hokey, game rules weren't required to make much sense and you were always curious to know what was on the next screen. Play it here.

Gorillion is an action and puzzle platformer, infused with monochromatic graphics, where two characters interact in different planes of each level.

Gorillion can be played by one or two players, and each character takes turns hitting switches or nudging boxes (on the side or underneath with your head) to delve deeper into the tower to try to find the Gorillion beast.

Tower of the Gorillion is playable now but lacks enemies to fight and some features, which Circuiton tells IndieGames will ideally be completed for the TOJam Arcade later this year.

Independent developer Cube Roots announced the upcoming launch of its puzzle-RPG hybrid title Dungeon Hearts, to be released next year in cooperation with Serious Sam 3 publisher Devolver Digital.

The first successful pitch resulting from Devolver Digital's unique indie-targeted Pitch Fork Parker campaign, Dungeon Hearts promises "a nostalgic blend of classic RPG elements fused into a vibrant match-three puzzle game for a wholly unique experience."

"Dungeon Hearts has been a labor of love for a while now," notes Cube Roots founder Chris Pavia. "As an indie it can be tough bringing your project to a publisher for fear they are going to strip away the developer's personality from the final product. It has been quite the opposite with the guys over at Devolver Digital, it's been great working with people who embrace the weird and quirky."

Dungeon Hearts will premiere for Windows, Mac, and mobile platforms in early 2013.

As part of the Independent Games Summit on Wednesday, August 15th, these talks represent the voice of the indie developer at GDC Europe, and cover essential lessons that affect game creators from throughout the industry.

These talks will be part of GDC Europe, which takes place Monday through Wednesday, August 13-15, 2012 at the Congress-Centrum Ost at the Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany.

The full details on these new sessions are as follows:

- In "The Dream Machine Postmortem: How To Make A Hard Thing Even Harder," the Swedish-based Cockroach Ink designer and director Anders Gustafsson will explain how he and his partner, Erik Zaring, set out to make the acclaimed point and click adventure game based on stop-motion animation.

The pair of developers "had no idea if it would work or not," but after more than three years of hard work, their game is now available on Steam, has earned numerous industry awards and has been displayed in art exhibits around the world. It's a very unusual tale, and this session will reveal how it all came together.

- Elsewhere, Lilt Line creator Gordon Midwood and London street artist Ron Zo, who've teamed up to create indie studio Different Tuna, will provide an in-depth look at the aesthetic design of their PSN papercraft-inspired sidescroller, Derrick the Deathfin.

During this session, dubbed "Derrick the Deathfin: How to Create a Uniquely Styled Game," the duo will share some tips and tricks to help developers create striking and unusual visual styles for their games. Not only will these tips "help you make your games look better, it'll also help them stand out from the crowd."
