Sustainability report of NTPC released

NTPC released its Sustainability Report "Powering with care ..." in New Delhi. Dr. Arup Roy Choudhury released the report for the year 2011-12 in the presence of Shri A.K. Singhal, Director (Finance) , Shri N.N. Misra , Director (Operations), Shri A.K. Jha, Director ( Technical) and Shri U.P. Pani , Director (HR). With NTPC's Sustainable Energy Development Vision of 'Going Higher on Generation, lowering GHG intensity", the report is a step towards sustaining greener environment, conserving natural resources such as energy, water etc. and company's commitment towards Corporate Governance and Social Responsibility.

Tata Power installs roof top rain water harvesting system in Jamshedpur

Tata Power, India's largest integrated power utility, has continuously endeavoured to spread the message of resource conservation. In continuation with this philosophy, Tata Power's Jojobera team installed a Rain Water Harvesting structure in the nearby Bina-Pani School of Dhanchatani area in Jamshedpur to address the pressing issue of scarcity of water. The ground water table has slowly receded in the area causing hand pumps, wells and other water bodies to dry up which gets severe during summer. It also prevents more than 275 students from attending school. Thus, the project has been specifically designed to address these issues.

Passionate about environmental changes and sustainable energy development, they have initiated a zero garbage solutions project to address the waste management challenges of the university, especially targeted at food and bio-degradable wastes. Launched by student members of the International Forum for Leadership and Sustainability, the IFLS chapter of Thapar University, is one-of-a-kind initiative that aims at managing food waste of one of India’s largest student hostels with a seating capacity of 858.

SupplyCo office at Gandhinagar, Cochin, switches to solar power

After District Collectorate at Thrikkakara, it looks like the main SupplyCo office at Gandhinagar is turning to sun for its energy supply. According to the officials with the Kerala Civil Supplies Corporation Ltd (SupplyCo), the plan is to install at least 100 kW solar panels on roof tops which will bring down the electricity consumption approximately by 75 to 90 per cent.

Key hydel projects in Uttarakhand on Yamuna and tributaries face hurdles

With the Ganga basin hydel projects failing to make headway owing to stiff opposition by environmentalists and religious leaders, a couple of key projects in Uttarakhand on Yamuna and tributaries are also facing hurdles. The ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) has raised fresh queries on the second stage of clearances on the 120-MW Vyasi project and on the 300-MW multi-purpose Lakhwar project. "The MoEF has raised fresh doubts on the two projects due to which the work has not begun," said a government official.

P2 Solar acquires development rights for a 700 kW hydro project in Punjab; Assessing the feasibility of 10 MW PV scheme at the site

P2 Solar of Vancouver has acquired development rights for a 700 kW hydro-electric project in Punjab and is assessing the viability of a 10MW PV scheme at the site. Company subsidiary Jagat Energy Private will develop the project and is planning to kick off construction this summer. The scheme will see a hydro facility built in a minor canal diversion and there is the possibility of installing a solar plant on the free space above.

IOC develops technology for coprocessing nonedible vegetable oil to make biodiesel

State-owned Indian Oil Corp. Ltd. (IOC) has developed and commercialized a technology for coprocessing nonedible vegetable oil in a refinery diesel hydrotreating unit to make biodiesel. During development of the method it also created a process for demetallization and degumming of vegetable oils. IOC demonstrated the technology at the 190,000-b/d Chennai Petroleum Corp. Ltd. Refinery at Manali. Chennai Petroleum is part of the IOC group.

Rajasthan extends preliminary bidding deadline for 300 MW wind power projects until June 25, 2013

State-owned Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation Limited (RRECL) (Jaipur, Rajasthan) has extended the preliminary bidding deadline for 300-megawatt (MW) wind power projects until June 25, 2013, apparently, to facilitate participation of more private developers. RRECL earlier this year issued Request for Proposal (RFP) document, inviting developers of wind power projects to establish, maintain and operate windfarms with an aggregate capacity of 300 MW during the ongoing 2013-14 financial year.

SBI, Tumkur Branch, Karnataka, donates 485 solar lamps to schools

State Bank of India, Tumkur branch, donated 485 solar lamps to students of 13 schools in the rural areas of the district as part of their corporate social responsibility. Chief General Manager Ashwini Mehra presented the solar lamps to five students of government high schools of Kittaganahalli, Gollahalli, and Siddaganga high school in Tumkur district. The remaining solar lamps would be sent to schools.

AP govt to offer 20% extra subsidy for solar units

Andhra Pradesh Government is planning to offer 20 per cent subsidy in addition to the 30 per cent subsidy offered by the Union Government for solar units. According to a statement from the Energy Conservation Mission, the additional subsidy will come through budgetary support. Households can sell extra solar power to the grid at pool cost. The State Government is planning to conduct a solar exhibition in coordination with industry and trade bodies, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry. This is aimed to highlight the impact of solar power for the benefit of industries, entrepreneurs and the general public.
