The Department of Pre-University Education is an Independent Commissionerate dealing with First year and Second year Pre-University classes (11th and 12th standards). This is the distinctive feature of the State. All the colleges offering Pre-University Education come under the control of Department of Pre-University Education.

Pre-University Education is a link between Secondary Education and Higher Education including Professional and General Education

The Board was set up in the year 1921 at Allahabad by an act of United Provinces Legislative Council. It conducted its first examination in 1923. This Board is one in India which, from the very start, had adopted 10+2 system of examination. The first public examination after 10 years education is High School Examination and after the 10+2 stage, there is Intermediate Examination. Prior to 1923, University of Allahabad was the examining body of these two examinations.In view of the ever multiplying load of work in successive years, the Board had been experiencing considerable difficulty in controlling and conducting its activities centrally from Allahabad.

“State Board Of Technical Education and Training” was set up in the state in May,1958. The Board conducted its first examination in 1960,for courses of diploma level and also for Draughtsman Certificate Course. The name of the state Board was changed to “Board Of Technical Education” in 1962.In the same Year, the “U.P. Pravidhic Shiksha Adhiniyam – 1962″ was enacted awarding the Board statutory status. In the year 1962, year of its inception, the Board held the examination of about 2500 students, in three major disciplines of Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at 25 different Centers/Institutions. It has a chairman , vice-chairman and 40 members ,named by the state government .Secretary ,Board of Technical Education ,U.P. is ex-officio member secretary of the Board.The curriculum prepared by other institutions was adopted by the Board, till 1980 but thereafter the curriculum and syllabi were developed and revised, every five years at the Board level through its Curriculum development centre.

The Staff Selection Commission has its Headquarter at New Delhi. All Examinations as well as administrative matters are submitted to the Chairman through two Members. The Secretary functions under both the Members. Besides, there are post of one Director, one Deputy Secretary, two Joint Directors, nine Under Secretaries, four Deputy Directors, one Finance & Budget Officer, one Assistant Director (OL), 24 Section Officers and more than 183 supporting officers / staff working at the Headquarters for discharging the duties and responsibilities of the Commission. An Organisational Chart of the Commission (Hqrs.) is given at Appendix II,. The functions of various Branches/Sections of the Hqrs. are briefly outlined under the heading “Functions of the Sections”.
