LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran killed

Tamil Tiger leader Velupillai Prabhakaran was shot dead by Sri Lankan special forces as he tried to stage a dramatic breakout from the army encirclement, a military spokesman said.

Prabhakaran and his top aides came out of their last hiding place in a small convoy of van and an ambulance and tried to drive out of the war zone, but were gunned down, he said. However, the army is withholding an official announcement till a DNA test of the bodies is conducted. The Tiger chief was killed with two others, who are yet to be identified but believed to be his closest associates LTTE intelligence chief Pottu Amman and Sea Tigers’ chief Soosoi.

According to the military, the Tigers tried to evacuate its leaders early this morning in two vehicles. Army special soldiers of 53 Division have intercepted the vehicles moving north and destroyed the convoy after fierce fighting.

The military said it had found 150 bodies of LTTE cadres so far and they are in the process of identifying them. Among the identified were, Charles Anthony, the eldest son of LTTE chief, B. Ramesh, A special military leader, Kapil Amman, LTTE’s deputy intelligence leader, Sudarman , the aide to Prabhakarn’s son, Rathnam Master , a Black Tiger leader and Ilango, another senior LTTE leader

Tension prevailed on Friday night around the Madras high court campus as a group of advocates staged a protest within the premises. A police contingent entered the campus late in the evening to evict them from the complex.

About 25 lawyers had stayed put inside the complex till late in the night, raising concerns within the judiciary. Eventually, the chief justice’s office gave permission to the police to enter the premises to clear out the protestors. After repeated announcements through megaphones asking advocates to vacate the campus, city police commissioner K Radhakrishnan, along with a contingent of the commando force, entered the premises. A section of lawyers then mediated to persuade their agitated colleagues to leave.

Earlier, as fresh violence was reported from across the state, director general of police K P Jain issued shoot-at-sight orders against anyone burning buses and destroying public property. “I have issued shoot-at-sight orders against anyone resorting to violence and damaging public property,” Jain told The Times of India.

Speaking on the eve of the historic ceremony, he hailed the civil rights leader as "not just a dreamer, but a doer" who worked tirelessly for change.

Mr Obama will become the first black man to take office at the White House, a milestone that few believed possible when Dr King was assassinated four decades ago.

Speaking at a shelter for homeless teenagers, Mr Obama said: "Given the crisis that we're in and the hardships that so many people are going through, we can't allow any idle hands.

"Everybody's got to be involved. Everybody's going to have to pitch in. We want to rebuild America."

Mr Obama, who was elected on a slogan of "change" and whose campaign was built on grassroots activism, will be sworn in as the 44th President of the United States.

He will use the name Barack Hussein Obama II, using the middle name he avoided during his election campaign because of its association with Islam and the deposed dictator of Iraq.

As many as two million people, hundreds of thousands of them already braving freezing temperatures to throng Washington, are expected to gather outside the Capitol for the inauguration ceremony.

Some 40 minutes after Mr Obama, flanked by bulletproof screens, has solemnly sworn to "faithfully execute the office of president", the former President George W. Bush will depart for Texas.

Mr Obama takes office at a time of economic crisis when America is engaged in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. With an approval rating of just 22 per cent, according to a CBS/New York Times poll, Mr Bush departs as the most unpopular president to leave office since polling began.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown describes Israel's actions as "indefensible" as a UN compound in Gaza is attacked.

The United Nations secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, condemned the Israeli attack, where 700 Palestinians were sheltering.

The UN Relief and Works Agency was struck twice by Israeli fire, "a grave mistake" according to Israel's defence minister.

But Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said soldiers had attacked the building after militants open fired from that location.

Along with other news organisations Channel 4 News has been denied access to Gaza.

Strong earthquake rocks Indonesia

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 has rocked eastern Indonesia, seismologists say.

The tremor struck south-west of Manokwari, West Papua province, at 0443 on Sunday (1943 GMT), the US Geological Survey said.

Residents ran outdoors and to higher ground, but a tsunami alert was withdrawn within an hour.

The Indonesian archipelago lies over several continental plates where seismic activity happens regularly.

While the local seismology agency said the quake had a magnitude of 7.2, the US Geological Survey put the quake at a stronger 7.6.

Hasim Rumatiga, a local health official, told Associated Press that electricity went off and residents ran to higher ground.

A policeman said that without power it was difficult to check for damage in Manokwari, the seaside capital of the province, AFP news agency reported.

He added that the police and military had been helping people get to higher ground.

Pakistan army chief General Ashfaq Kayani promised a matching response ‘within minutes” were the Indians to carry out precision strikes against camps of militants inside Pakistan, whom it blames for the Mumbai attacks.

And as if they were doing a dress rehearsal, Pakistan Air Force jets have been flying over Islamabad and Lahore for the past two days, prompting one blogger to report that some people had called up media outlets asking if the Indian Air Force was on its way.

Ghajini is the Hindi adaptation of the critically acclaimed film Memento by Christopher Nolan, with the common theme of the protagonist suffering from anterograde amnesia or short term memory loss and seeking revenge for his wife’s murder. Ghajini will feature Aamir Khan, Asin Thottumkal and Jiah Khan in lead roles and will be directed by A. R. Murugadoss, who also directed the Tamil version of the film in 2005.

A. R. Rahman will be scoring the music for the film whilst Ravi K. Chandran and Anthony handle cinematography and editing of the film respectively. The film began shooting in May 2007, with songs having been shot in the Deadpan Desert of Namibia and in Cape Town, South Africa. The movie is notable for Aamir Khan having shaven his head bald. A 3d game is reportedly being produced, the release of which will coincide with the audio release. The film is regarded as the most awaited Bollywood movie of 2008. Ghajini has reportedly already made Rs 93 crore.

According to reports, the Indian Film Company has bagged the domestic distribution rights for Ghajini of an estimated Rs 53 crore. While its home video rights, overseas rights and satellite rights have been sold for another Rs 40 crore which brings to the grand total to Rs 93 crore.
