The official countown has began for the curtains to be lifted off the Next Gen Pulsar..!!

The KTM 200 Duke and now the Next Gen Pulsar.. the Bajaj onslaught has truly begun..!!

After comprehensively dominating the 150 plus motorcycle segment of India for 10 straight years, Bajaj Auto will officially unveil the Next Gen Pulsar on 30'th Jan 2012.

The official Pulsar website has started a countdown timer which indicates that the new Pulsar(s) will be officialy unveiled on 30'th Jan..!!

According to Mr. Bajaj (MD Bajaj Auto), the Next Gen Pulsars will be "completely re-engineered" and share a lot of parts with the KTM 200 Duke, which incidentally has been co-developed by Bajaj with KTM and is manufactured by Bajaj @ Pune, India.

So far there has been a few spy photos of a couple of heavily disguised Pulsars being tested around Pune (birth place of Pulsar). With the launch of the KTM 200 Duke with a mouth watering price tag and now the official confirmation of the launch of the Next Gen Pulsar..!!

Bajaj officially launches the high performance street bike, the KTM 200 Duke.. at a very attractive price

Bajaj Auto launched the KTM 200 Duke in India today with an Ex-Showroom (Delhi) price tag of 1,17,500 Rupees..!! This puts the 200 Duke at a very interesting price point between the Yamaha R15 (1.07 lakhs Ex-Showroom) and Honda CBR250R (1.43 lakhs Ex-Showroom).

Bookings commence from Feb 1, 2012 at the KTM (earlier caled as Probiking) showrooms. Deliveries are expected to start after a few weeks of booking.

Now with the official annoucement of the price, the 200 Duke also becomes the "Power to Rupee" king among the made in India bikes..!!

KTM Debuts in India with the KTM 200 Duke (Rs.1,17,500 (ex-showroom, Delhi). INTRODUCTORY PRICE

New Delhi, January 24, 2012: Bajaj Auto Limited and KTM Sportmotorcycle AG today announced the much awaited launch of the KTM brand in India. Known for their legendary racing achievements, KTM is Europe’s second largest motorcycle manufacturer and dominates the off-road segment across the world. Yamaha India updates its SX-X and SZ-R models with new colors/graphics and adds a kick starter..

Yamaha India had launched three models under the SZ brand name in August/September 2010. Unless one keeps a regular tab on the 2 wheeler scene in India, its a bit confusing for the common man to differentiate between the three SZ models.

When first launched, SZ: Had only Kick start and had no tank scoop, SZ-X: Had Electric start (but no kick start) + had a tank scoop & SZ-R: Had Electric Start (but no kick start) + had a different tank scoop design than the SZ-X + had a front disc brake.

What's new in the 2012 upgrade?: Yamaha India has added the earlier missing Kick starter along with the Electric starter on the SZ-X and SZ-R models. Also the SZ-X and SZ-R models get slightly redesigned decals and a new "Silver" color.

The base SZ model seems to have been untouched also in the technical specifications remain almost identical with the older model except for the 2 kg increase in the kerb weight.

Price: When launched the SZ-X had a price tag od Rs. 52,000 (Ex-Showroom Delhi) and the SZ-R Rs. 55,500 (Ex-Showroom Delhi). It is not known whether the price has been increased for the 2012 SZ-X and SZ-R models.. but even if there is an increment, it would not be too substantial.

The onslaught from Bajaj Auto is about to start.. Amen

The launch date of the much awaited KTM 200 Duke in India is on 24’th January 2012. The official countdown of the "baby" Duke in India began when Mr. Rajiv Bajaj gave away the launch date in an interview to a news channel (NDTV) a couple of weeks back.

Having already revealed the engine specs of the 200 Duke and provided a select bunch of Indian automotive journalists with its first ride feel, it’s just the "Price" and the "Booking + Delivery dates" that is left to be officially announced on 24’th of Jan 2012.

Before the Duke dust had even settled, another interesting development has taken place. In a very recent interview given to CNBC TV18 Mr. Bajaj has gone on record to say that a new product will be revealed on 30’th of January 2012, the launch of which will be around March 2012..!!

According to Mr. Bajaj:

"We are hoping to pull off the first two (product launches) actually in March itself.

In fact we have the product reveal on the 30th of January in Mumbai and hopefully follow-up with the second product soon after that.."

What could these new products be?

In the last couple of years the demand/growth for automatic scooters in India has been more than that of motorcycles. There was ample indication at the 2012 AutoExpo that our desi bike makers are now tilting more in favor of making and selling automatic scooters. For the sake of the desi bike enthusiast, I now have even greater expectations especially from the Next Generation Pulsar.

After lying low for quite sometime and successfully defending its position, looks like the onslaught from Bajaj Auto is about to start.

Nobody has till now noticed that Hero has displayed a couple of models with changed names at the 2012 AutoExpo..!!

This indicates the beginning of the demise of a name (CBZ) which started the trend of 4-stroke, stylish + performance bikes in India..

Its very surprising that nobody, I repeat nobody (blogs, forums or mainstream auto journalists) have so far noticed that apart from removing the Honda name from all the vehicles that were displayed at the 2012 AutoExpo, Hero also displayed its 150 cc “CBZ Xtreme” model with just “Xtreme” branding..!!

Not just that, Hero also displayed it’s 100 cc “CD Dawn/ Deluxe” models with a new brand name as “HF-Dawn/Deluxe”. Also when observed closely the PGM-Fi letters from its Karizma ZMR model has been rewritten now just as “Fi”.

So why is Hero dropping it’s famous CBZ and CD brandings (and yes, also PGM-Fi)..??

This is because the CB, CD and PGM-Fi are brand names that Honda has exclusive rights to and since the agreement between Hero and Honda is officially coming to an end by 2014, it is necessary for Hero to make this rebranding before the 2014 deadline.

It should actually sound music to the ears of Hero Moto officials that “Nobody” has so far noticed the changed brand names on the bikes at the AutoExpo..!! This means that even on the road the changed names should make not much of a difference to its customers.

But then this also means that it’s the start to an end of a name (just the name mind you and not the current model) which started the trend of 4 stroke stylish + performance bikes in India, i.e. the CBZ..!!

The image that TVS Motors projects itself at almost every AutoExpo is that of an extremely adventurous 2 wheeler maker who are not averse to trying exciting stuff. Since 2004 at every AutoExpo, TVS have been dishing out outlandish 2 wheeler concepts. Chicane, Taurus, Isotope, Predator, X-Fossil are names of some of those motorcycle concepts. There was even a futuristic quad bike concept called Hammer head during the last 2010 AutoExpo.

But during this year’s AutoExpo for a change there were no flashy motorcycle concepts from TVS. The TVS pavilion was strewn around with TVS current Indian lineup of Sport, Star City and Apache RTR variants among the motorcycles and the Scooty Pep+/Streak and Wego among the scooters.

TVS did show a hybrid (electric + petrol) scooter concept called the "Qube" at the Expo which according to TVS should be introduced into the market for customer trails soon. There was also the recently announced by TVS, a new engine with an all new Automatic Transmission at display on a bare bone scooter frame. But then I have always been least interested in scooters, hybrid, 100% internal combustion or with a new automatic transmission.

In a nutshell there was not much put on display at the 2012 AutoExpo for the motorcycle enthusiast (but then this was the story at the 2012 AutoExpo with most of the other brands as well).

TVS displayed its 150 cc, liquid cooled step thru model the Tormax which is manufactured and on sale in Indonesia. There was also another liquid cooled 250 cc, motocross motorcycle the RTR 250 FX which incidentally the factory racing team of TVS uses to race in the off road championships. Also according to my knowledge the 250 cc, liquid cooled engine of the RTR 250 FX is actually not TVS developed but an imported unit.

TVS has officially stated that they would launch 2 new motorcycles in 2012. A 125 cc bike called Radeon (to be launched by this year mid) and another motorcycle under the resurrected Victor brand (to be launched by the year end).

TVS did show a 125 cc concept named Radeon at the Auto Expo but it was a very low key display which was mostly missed by our auto blogs/sites. The 125 cc Radeon displayed at the AutoExpo was shown in the body panels of the TVS Jive, had a front disc brake and a 125 cc engine, which according to TVS has been taken from the discontinued 125 cc engine of the Victor 125.

So I guess there is no twin spark stuff from TVS this time.

According to the TVS officials at the Expo, this was just a prototype meant for display at the Expo and the actual Radeon bike which would be finally launched would feature completely new panels and design.

But then doesn’t this defeat the purpose of showing the bike at the Expo? Maybe TVS did not want the competition to have a peek at the new 125 cc bike. Lets leave it to TVS to showcase whatever they like and what they finally launch.

But the list of motorcycle brands from TVS is definitely getting a bit too long. Apache RTR, Sport, Star City, Jive, Flame and now Radeon & Victor. How about discontinuing the slow moving Flame and Jive to make way for the Radeon and Victor?

At last a Royal Enfield of my dreams.. the "Continental GT" Cafe Racer..!!

Nothing could be more Retro and cool at the same time than the "Continental GT" Café Racer model that Royal Enfield has shown at the 2012 AutoExpo..!!

The anticipated Café Racer model from Royal Enfield was displayed at the 2012 Auto Expo. Royal Enfield did show a Café Racer concept at the last 2010 AutoExpo, but that was quite clearly just a concept based on the current “Bullet” chassis.

This Royal Enfield promises to graduate you into a mature yet cool biker dude amidst a sea of plastic bikes/bikers..

But the Café Racer displayed during this AutoExpo is based on a completely new chassis. The finishing and detailing on the display bike suggests that it is almost production ready..!!

What is a Café Racer? In short, it is a classic/retro bike born out of the retro/classic road bikes of the 1960’s which back in those “Black & White” days days were used for racing on the European freeways by making customizations/modifications.

The signature Café Racer (modifications) stying elements are:

An elongated and flat fuel tank

A small humped (single) seat

Low and narrow handlebars (2 piece clip ons or short one piece handlebars called "clubman")

Rear set foot pegs

These modifications allowed the rider to to "tuck in" to reduce wind resistance. The bikes had a raw, lean and stripped-down look. These motorcycles were lean, light and handled road surfaces well.

Royal Enfield “Continental GT” Café Racer:

Styling: The Royal Enfield Café Racer shown at the AutoExpo has “Continental GT” pasted on its tank. The elongated flat fuel tank & single humped seat is authentic Café Racer styling. The handlebars are "two piece clip ons" which is low set. And of course it also gets rearset foot pegs.

With other details on the bike like the switchgear, twin pod instrument cluster, new sporty looking exhaust and the rear view mirrors which are attached to the handlebars in a novel fashion, this Royal Enfield promises to graduate you into a mature yet cool biker dude amidst a sea of plastic bikes/bikers.

Engine: The Single Cylinder lump looks to have been carried over from the current UCE platform. Details of the engine regarding its capacity, power, torque etc. are not yet official.

But one can see the Fuel Injector lines on the engine, therefore its probably safe to assume that the “Continental GT” Café Racer from Royal Enfield would get the 500 cc, Fuel Injected engine that does duty on the Classic 500 model. With minimalist/stripped down body, we can expect the kerb weight on this bike to come down.

Totally new Chassis & Suspension: The bike features an all new and first for Royal Enfield “Double downtube + Double cradle” frame which is a departure from the traditional “Single downtube + Engine as a stressed member” frame of the current Bullet, Classic and Thunderbird models of Royal Enfield.

With an all new chassis, plus a new swingarm, rear suspension (the bike at the show had Ohlins Gas filled rear shock absorbers), rear disc brakes and probably redesigned front forks as well we should expect the “Continental GT” to handle like a Classic Sports Bike..!!

Launch Dates: There has been no official announcement made yet but the Royal Enfield officials that were present at the Expo did mention that we can expect a launch date somewhere in 2013 in India.

My Take:

The “Classic” model was developed primarily for the export markets. Royal Enfield never imagined that its Classic range of models would become a huge success in India. But to everyone’s sweet surprise the Classic enjoy a 8-10 month waiting list in India. History could repeat itself in India with the “Continental GT” Café Racer. I am sure that in export markets this model would be received very well, but I am get this premonition that it might become another Royal Enfield success story in India as well.

The Café Racer from Royal Enfield has become latest my dream bike (which is within reach for a middle class Indian ) and I have made up my mind to get one after a few years.. just let me enjoy my “Plastic Bikes” a little bit longer..

The recently upgraded and launched 125 cc, Duro DZ scooter was shown at the AutoExpo. Mahindra 2 Wheelers must be having high hopes from this particular scooter to bring in the sales numbers. But to pull in the crowds and enthusiasts, Mahindra also showed off it's MGP30 the Moto3 Race Bike at the 2012 AutoExpo.

The 250 cc, single cylinder, 4 stroke Moto3 challenger from Mahindra has been developed in conjunction with two-wheeler design firm Engines Engineering (which Mahindra has bought out) with another renowned firm Oral Engineering.

The MGP30 will race in the 2013 season of MotoGP and will wear the new White + Red colors compared to the Silver + Red revelry of last MotoGP season. For more on the Mahindra Racing click here..

Mahindra's Mojo dream alive (?)

Just when I was beginning to think that Mahindra 2 Wheelers might have dumped its 300 cc Mojo motorcycle which was showed as a prototype on Sep 2010, Mahindra kind of surprised me by showing the Mojo at the 2012 AutoExpo. There is no official confirmation whether and when it's getting launched.

Mahindra's shows off its (refreshed..??) 110 cc Stallio

The 110 cc Stallio motorcycle did not have the best of launches and just after 5-6 months of its commercial launch, the bike had to be pulled off the showrooms citing quality issues especially with its gearbox.

It's not sure whether Mahindra is now once again ready to relaunch the Stallio but they did show off the model at the recent AutoExpo. The bike looks the same albeit sporting some new decals this time round.

Yamaha shows two of it's 2012 Limited Edition YZF R15 Version 2.0 bikes..

The Yamaha R15 got a fresh lease of life when it received the Version 2.0 treatment at the second half of 2011.. gone are the slim and disproportionate looking rear portion, replaced by a healthy looking rear end.

The "White" Limited Edition colors looks racy..

Although there has been no upgrade in terms of engine performance, the bike still handles the best among Indian made bikes and now looks the part too. To keep the interest alive Yamaha India has shown two Limited Edition R15's at the 2012 Auto Expo.

These Limited Edition bikes are in "White" and "Fiery Red" colors. According to Yamaha India, these two limited edition models are to celebrate the 50th anniversary celebrations of Yamaha’s Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix.

Price: The fiery red R15 limited edition bike will be priced at Rs 1.10 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and the white and red bike will sell for Rs 1.11 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The company plans to sell just 4,000 units of each of these limited edition R15s.

New color for the CBR250R showed at the 2012 Auto Expo.. to be launched in India soon

Honda made a big leap into affordable performance biking in India last year with its CBR250R. Expecting Honda to surpass the CBR250R is such a short time would be too optimistic. Moreover Honda has unveiled the CBR150R at the 2012 Auto Expo, they also have the task of making the 110 cc “Dream Yuga” motorcycle a sales success.

I am expecting Honda to take it easy with the CBR250R and it would probably be left untouched for 4-5 more years, at least mechanically.

Cosmetic refreshments should keep the CBR250R fresh and Honda has initiated the same with a new "Red-Blue-White" color scheme for the CBR250R. After its launch in india, so far the CBR250R had been available in 3 colours – Red, Black and Silver.

Indian enthusiasts were aware that the Red-Blue-White color combination on the CBR250R was available on export models. It was a quite talked about/sought after color among them. Prospective CBR250R owners can now rejoice for the same color combo will be made available in India.

Available Date: Probably in a month’s time

Price: No idea right now if a premium would be charged for this new color scheme

Styling mirrors the CB Shine..

"Dream Yuga", this one definitely has to be among the top of my list of weird motorcycle names. Yep, "Dream Yuga" is the chosen name for Honda’s much talked about foray into the voluminous commuter/100 cc motorycle category of India. This particular model from Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India (HMSI) was unveiled on the first day of the 2012 AutoExpo.

This particular motorcycle might not interest enthusiasts but it is a very important card in Honda’s grand game plan for India. Given the fact that Honda has officially put it on paper to part with its erstwhile partner Hero, I am expecting Dream Yuga to get top priority in the coming days from Honda.

But dude, that’s a weird name "Dream Yuga".

In terms of looks the Dream Yuga looks quite identical to the 125 cc CB Shine. Dream Yuga comes with a 110 cc engine which also does duty on the Honda’s CB Twister bike. I was really impressed with the engine of the CB Twister so one can expect the Dream Yuga to have great all round performance as well.

Suzuki Motorcycles India unveiled a new commuter motorcycle.. calls it Hayate

Suzuki motorcycle today unveiled a 110 cc motorcycle called "Hayate" aimed at the commuters. In terms of styling the Hayate does remind one of the Slingshot 125 motorcycle from Suzuki India's stables.

The Hayate definitely won't cut ice with enthusiasts who were expecting at least the Suzuki GW250/Inazuma motorcycle to be brought to India. According to Suzuki it seems India isn't ready for "big" bikes but they have promised some exciting stuff for enthusiasts next time at 2014 AutoExpo.

Suzuki Hayate Details: 112.8cc 4 stroke single cylinder engine, engine power figures are yet not disclosed, optional alloy wheels, 17 inch tyres (2.75 front and 3.00 rear).

Honda (HMSI) shows off its sporty motorcycles for India.. the racy CBR150R..!!

Honda unveils its latest model targetted at the Yamaha R15, the CBR150R at the 2012 AutoExpo..!!

The CBR150R would be more of a "Race track tool" than the "Sports tourer" like CBR250R...

Both the CBR250R and the CBR150R is manufactured in Thailand so probably we can expect the CBR150R to be manufactured in India as well (since HMSI makes the CR250R in India). At first glance the CBR150R appears similar like its elder brother the CBR250R, but there are some differences between the two models which are skin deep.

For example, the frame of the CBR150R is a bit more sporty and has a "perimeter" element to it (apart from having a downtube as well) wheareas the CBR250R usues a simpler "tubular diamond" frame. The exhaust can of the CBR150R is also shorter and more pleasing to the eye than that of the CBR250R.

The engine of the CBR150R sold in Thailand is a single cylinder, liquid cooled, DOHC 4 valve unit and develops its max. power of 17.8 Ps at a higher rpm (10,500..!!) than the relatively mildly tuned CBR250R. With a sportier chassis and an engine with a sportier state of tune, we can expect the CBR150R to be more of a "Race track tool" than the "Sports tourer" like CBR250R.

Looks like the Yamaha R15 finally has some serious competition.

Price: The official pricing has not been announced, but it's probably safe to expect a price hovering around the Yamaha R15 Version 2.0's current (i.e between 1.10-1.25 ex-showroom Delhi)

Launch Date: It's being stated as the "second half of 2012"

Royal Enfield unveiled its much anticipated Thunderbird 500 at the first day of the 2012 AutoExpo. Royal Enfield seems to have really paid attentention to details on the new bike.

Engine Specs: Fuel Injected, 500 cc engine with Max power: 27.2 bhp @ 5250 RPM & 41.3 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm. Which essentially means that the engine of the Classic 500 has been shared here.

Price: The price has not been officially announced so far

Hero MotoCorp has unveiled 2 new motorycles and a new scooter today. These new products are being branded under the "Hero" brand, although the products are basically based on current Honda (HMSI) products.

The 2 new motorcycles are:

A new 110 cc Passion variant called the "Passion X Pro"

Ready to Race DNA:

With hundreds of wins/trophies in off road/endurance races, "Ready To Race" is KTM’s tagline and brand DNA and this baby Duke is no exception. With just 136 kgs of kerb weight and a 25 bhp, fast spinning engine, this bike looks all poised to blast on our Indian streets.

Overdrive has quoted on their TV show that "After riding the 200 Duke, the Yamaha R15 feels too slow and the Honda CBR250R too heavy..!!"

The 200 Duke comes with (first on an Indian bike) upside down front forks, a beautiful and strong looking aluminum swingarm, a DOHC - 4 valve, liquid cooled - fuel injected engine, a trademark KTM trellis frame and bodywork that is devoid of any unnecessary fat. It looks exotic, lean, mean and every bit of the mental image that I have of the KTM brand.

Pricing of the 200 Duke in India:

Indians should consider themselves lucky that the KTM 200 Duke is being built completely in India (by Bajaj Auto) which would translate into tremendous pricing (one won’t have to shell out 100% import duties) advantage.

Though the official pricing has not yet been announced, one should expect a price range of anywhere between the Yamaha R15 (1.1 lakh ex-showroom) and the Honda CBR250R (1.5 lakh ex-showroom).

Exhaust note of the 200 Duke:

In case anyone is wondering how the KTM 200 Duke sounds, here is a video of the 200 Duke shot at the Bajaj premises. That’s the Best/Sportiest "legal" exhaust note that I have heard on a Made in India bike..!!

A look at the different types of motorcycle transmissions.. and also would the proposed "automatic" motorcycle from TVS Motor cut ice..??

A couple of days back major Indian national publications/automobile blogs/sites broke out the Official news from TVS Motor that they are ready to launch a slew of new 2 wheelers (by 2013) with an a newly developed automatic transmission technology. TVS has also officially stated that they are eyeing to put this new technology across scooters, step thru mopeds (for markets like Indonesia) and also on motorcycles..!!

As my blog covers specifically motorcycle related stuff, what would this proposed "automatic motorcycle" from TVS would be like?

Q1.Doesn’t TVS already make the "clutchless" Jive model?

Q2.Does it mean that the new motorcycle would feature a “clutchless+gearless” mechanism from its scooters like the Wego?

Since all the sites have more or less "copy + pasted" the official word from TVS, the complete details is actually not clear for a layman.

Basic understanding of the "types of transmissions" usually found on two wheelers

1. With Manual Gears with a Manual Clutch:

This type of transmission is currently found nearly across all motorcycles sold in India.

Advantages :

Best possible fuel efficiency : The wastage of precious fuel is minimum when the gears are selected judiciously

Rider control: Such a transmission lets the rider remain in control of the bike according to his wish.

Disadvantages:

Tiresome to ride in traffic: The clutch has to be depressed a lot while riding in traffic giving the left hand a good workout

2. Manual Gears with an "Automatic" Centrifugal Clutch:

This mechanism has been adopted on the TVS Jive motorcycle. In this case there are gears which need to be changed manually (by the left foot) but there is no manual clutch that needs to be engaged with the left hand. While changing gears all that the rider has to do is to let go of the accelerator which brings the "centrifugal clutch" into play, this allows the rider to change gears without the need for a manual clutch.

This mechanism is quite popular among step thru models sold in the South-East Asian countries like Indonesia, Thailand etc. Since TVS produces step thru models with such mechanism in Indonesia, plonking one on a motorcycle (Jive) platform wasn’t too difficult for them.

Advantages:

Decent fuel efficiency- Since the selection of gears is done manually the fuel efficiency remains good

Disadvantages:

Not sporty - Even South East Asian riders find this clutchless mechanism not sporty to ride. And yeah pulling wheelies, stoppies, burnout’s or even sliding around without a clutch would be very difficult.

Riding without a clutch is unnatural for Indians: It is something that Indians are not used to. During my test ride of the Jive, it was awkward for me to adjust to riding without a clutch lever. No wonder the Jive has not found too many takers in India so far.

3. CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) with No Gears – No Clutch..!!:

This type of transmission of currently found across all automatic scooters sold in India. This transmission does not have a clutch or gears. The 2 wheeler moves ahead just with the twist of the accelerator.

The transmission mechanism consists of a belt which moves over two conically shaped pulleys.

Advantages :

Seamless drive - Since there is no clutch to engage or gears to operate riding a vehicle with such a transmission is virtually child’s play.

Also the power delivery is smooth/without any jerks

Disadvantages :

Low Fuel Efficiency - Since the drive belt moves over two conical pulleys, there is slippage of the belt over the pulleys while transferring the power, leading to loss of power which results in comparatively lower fuel efficiency.

The above actually answers the question why a 110 cc Activa scooter with CVT mechanism returns around 40 kmpl whereas a 110 cc Twister motorcycle with manual gears returns around 70 kmpl..!!

4. Automatic Transmission (with no manual clutch or manual gears):

This type of mechanism is similar to riding vehicles with CVT mechanism. i.e one doesn't have to bother with either a clutch or gears. But unlike a CVT mechanism they actually have gears and clutch, just that the gears and clutch are inside the engine which are automatically operated mechanically and (in case of advanced systems) electronically by the engine depending on the speed / load on the vehicle. The Honda VFR1200F is a model which features an automatic transmission system.

Advantages :

Better fuel efficiency than CVT mechanisms - Since there are gears ideally there should not be loss of energy/power like on a CVT mechanism

Disadvantages :

The automatic mechanism is complicated- Unlike a CVT mechanism which is quite simple in operation, an automatic transmission has to be accurate in changing the gears according to the ride conditions. If the automatic shifts aren’t accurate then the vehicle would feel like it’s “hunting for the right gear” to move forward.

Also the shift mechanism has to be fast and smooth to provide a seamless / jerk free ride experience.

The TVS Automatic Mechanism:

From the news reports I understand that TVS seems to be developing the 4’th type of transmission mentioned above. It plans to install this mechanism first on its scooters (staring from 2013) and then have plans for motorcycles too. Currently they seem to be ready with an engine platform of 110 cc and have stated that they can be scaled upward to 250 cc. One news report does state that a motorcycle fitted with this mechanism would have the option to change gears at the touch of a button.

New transmission promising on a scooter...

The main benefit of this new transmission is the “promise” of better mileage/fuel efficiency. TVS in its official release have quoted a figure of 20% better fuel efficiency than a normal “CVT” scooter. That should roughly mean an increment of 8 kmpl over a normal 110 cc “CVT” scooter with 40 kmpl fuel efficiency. So a 110 cc scooter which will return 48-50 kmpl..?? Not bad I’ll say, after all in India who doesn’t like more mileage..?? This could really work in favor of TVS.

But then the new transmission system has to be really robust, accurate and reliable to work flawlessly, else it will be irritating to ride. In fact TVS is not the first in India to try such a transmission system. Bajaj tried a 3 speed automatic system on its “Saffire” scooter in 1999 before reverting back to the conventional and simple in operation CVT system for the next upgrade which was the “Wave” scooter.

Same “automatic transmission” on a motorcycle? Not very sure..

A 100 cc Twister with manual gear control returns around 65-70 kmpl and this new motorcycle with automatic gear control would return 48-50 kmpl..??

Agreed riding this type of automatic motorcycle would be stress free in traffic and definitely not awkward like the Jive, but then why not opt for the automatic scooter in its place?

One does not get the extra storage space on a motorcycle which is present on a scooter

Also let’s not forget the loss of control over the gears and the “less sporty” feel of riding an automatic somehow make this proposed new transmission on a motorcycle very “un-motorcycle like” to me. But as one news report does state that a motorcycle fitted with this mechanism “gears can be changed with the touch of a button”, I’ll have to say that I have to ride one to believe.

Internationally Honda VFR1200F is a model which has a sophisticated automatic transmission with auto mode and also button type electronic gear change. But then the VFR1200F hasn’t really set the sales charts on fire.

Seriously TVS, why not try to build more sporty and potent “desi” bikes than try to crack a comfortable commuter code..?? But nevertheless respect from my side for trying out new and innovative technologies in India.

The 2012 Pulsar 135 gets new colors..

Now the entire Pulsar family gets the "Speedlines" color scheme..

New color schemes do not excite me that much. But the Pulsar 135LS which is a gem of a bike badly needed some new colors. So far Bajaj had provided the Pulsar 135 just with two colors, Red and Black.

After 2 years of being launched the “baby” Pulsar gets a new Blue color. Also the Pulsar 135 now gets the Pulsar “Speedlines” which is the marketing speak for a dual color theme for the Pulsars.

The new color and dual tone treatment should keep the appeal of the Pulsar 135 fresh. According to me the Pulsar 135 in fact looks better in this new dual tone. There is no change in the engine/technical specs of the Pulsar 135 but the bright side is that the price also has not been touched.

So what’s new on the 2012 Pulsar 135?

The Pulsar 135 gets a new Blue color (it was available only in black and red so far)

The Red and Blue colors come with a dual combination with Black

The Black color remains in single color tone

The alloy grab rails and the clip on alloy handlebars get a black finish

Next Generation Pulsars caught being tested once again..

Next Generation Pulsar motorcycles were caught on camera while on their test runs. The images this time comes from IndianCarsBikes. The test mules seem to be the same ones that were spotted a month back.

From the photos it becomes clear that just as Mr. Bajaj had mentioned in an interview earlier this year, the Next Gen Pulsars indeed shares some common parts with the KTM 125/200 Duke (that Bajaj has co-developed with KTM and manufactured in India).

KTM 125/200 Duke Chassis

1. The engine block on the Next Gen Pulsars looks like a carbon copy of the KTM 125/200 Duke.

2. Absence of cooling fins means and what looks like coolant tubes means that the engine on the Next Gen Pulsars is a liquid cooled one.

3. The underbelly exhaust though seems to be inspired from the 125/200 Duke, looks to be different in layout from the KTM.

4. So is the design of the alloy wheels which looks inspired from the KTM but is actually different in design.

5. Mr Bajaj had already mentioned that the Next Gen Pulsar would feature a 4 valve-SOHC head.

6. Downtubes normally associated with conventional frames found on most Indian bikes seem to be absent on the test bikes (from whatever is visible on the spy photos). Looks like there is a good chance that the frame on the Next Generation Pulsar could well be an advanced and modern one (like the Trellis frame on the KTM 200 Duke)..!!

The test bikes in the photos are heavily disguised, moreover final touches like rear mudguard, chain cover, exhaust cover (speculating) and probably a belly pan (speculating again) are missing, therefore commenting on the styling is premature.

Some sites/blogs are speculating that it might be a 125 cc engine. Why? Because KTM 125 Duke exists? Because rear disc is absent on the spied test bikes..??

According to me it does not make any business sense to put a 125 cc bike in the market when one can command a handsome premium by launching a higher cc engine.

My current top 3 motorcycle dreams..

Flashback (Mid 1990’s): Back in those pre “internet-mobile phone” days any kind of FOREIGN motorcycle form was as desirable as Madonna of the 90’s. Any exotic motorcycle with a FAT rear tyre used to stir my raging teenage hormones.

The seed of economic reforms sown by Dr. Manmohan Singh in the early 90’s started to show its effect by the turn of the new millennium. As a result Hero Honda started the movement of satiating desi boy racer dreams in 1999 with the CBZ. The CBZ was the most stylish bike at that time made to Indian specs/money. In 2011 this movement has culminated in the form of Indians getting models like the Yamaha R15 and Honda CBR250R..!!

The real McCoy also eventually began to arrive in India starting with the Yamaha R1 and MT-01. In 2011 apart from the Japanese big fours (Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki & Kawasaki), even brands like Harley-Davidson, Ducati, BMW, Aprilia have set shops in India. Soon to follow suit are Triumph and KTM. The prices for these stuff is stratospheric (as they are imported as CBU: Completely Built Unit) but then hey, for anyone who can afford it, the bikes are now clean (legal) and one also gets the assurance of service and genuine spares.

2011-12: The Indian motorcycle market has definitely evolved a lot during the last 12 years. On a personal note, after dreaming, thinking, living and riding motorcycles for over 12 years, I can also state with some authority that now I can see and appreciate the beauty of a motorcycle beyond its FAT rear tyre.

So as I enter into my mid 30’s, listed below are now my Top 3 Dream Bikes

At the outset let me make it clear than I don’t expect to ever own these motorcycles and they would in all probability remain stuff of DREAMS to me. Apart from the very high price tags, these machines are also bit big and heavy for someone like me to ride comfortably. Nevertheless “Dream Karne Main Kya Jaata Hai..??”

No. 3: Honda CBR600RR

Full faired Super Sports bikes are without any doubt the object of desire of the young and the restless. While I might not be that restless now but I still am (and will be) young at heart. The Honda CBR600RR to me is the most beautiful among the multitude of Super Sport/Superbike machines.

No. 2: Ducati Streetfighter

This Ducati makes my Jaw drop more than a Playboy center spread. I simply can’t find words to describe the sheer raw and mechanical beauty of this nude object of desire.

No. 1: BMW R1200 GS

The BMW R1200 GS would not have even worth a look in my “Dhoom Machale” days. But as I have matured as a biker, the R1200 GS now appeals to me like seasoned wine. The R1200GS is the progenitor of the Adventure Touring category of bikes. It has the looks and reputation of being virtually indestructible and has that “conquer any terrain/tour the globe” capability.

No wonder this particular model still continues to be BMW’s largest selling model in the mature markets of Europe.

Review: "DSG Primal" Riding Gloves

Ownership review of my 4 year old DSG Primal "leather" Gloves..

"Wish it was available in size S (Small)": I got myself a pair of the DSG Primal gloves in October 2007. As I have small hands therefore I ordered size M (medium) since that was (and still is) the smallest size available. But I soon found out that size M on the DSG Primal is one size large for me. Due to the oversize it becomes clumsy for me to use my fingers with the gloves on. Therefore till date I have been able to use my DSG Primal gloves only on long rides.

"Tough as Leather..!!" That’s how I would like to describe the DSG Primal gloves. And for good reason as the gloves are constructed out of high grade leather.

I might not have used my gloves that extensively during these 4 years but one of my friend who is a heavy tourer also has a similar pair of the DSG Primal gloves which he has used and abused extensively. He is all praise for the gloves. According to him his DSG Primal gloves are the most durable that he has used so far. There has not been any tear or damage on our gloves yet.

Comfort of leather

Even though my gloves is one size large for me, after a couple of weeks of use the leather nicely took the natural shape of my hands and fingers, making it easier for me to use the gloves at least on long trips. The leather ensures that the hands remain comfortable during hot climate by absorbing the perspiration and also keeps the hands warm during the Indian winter.

Protection of leather and carbon fibre

Dislikes

- Not available in S-size

- Dual wrist closure cumbersome with a riding jacket

Leather is one of the best material for protection from road rash and coupled with carbon fibre inserts on the knuckles and on impact areas such as the palm, the DSG Primal provides very good protection to the hands from injury in case of a crash.

The glove extends over the wrist to the mid forearm over which there is a velcro closure. This is supposed to keep the glove from coming off in case of a road spill and also provide some extra protection. When worn without a riding jacket they seem to be quite fine but I have found that the extended wrist closure is a bit cumbersome to be worn over the sleeves of a riding jacket.

At Rs. 2,490 the DSG Primal comes at a slight premium over other gloves from the DSG stables but with the kind of durability and protection that it provides, I would rate it very highly and even put it as a good value for money product.

How I wish it came is size S (Small).

A (2011) study of the Official Fanpages on Facebook of our Indian 2 wheeler brands/companies..

"I am always on Facebook" goes a popular TV jingle and that seems to be quite true with the latest generation armed with the latest “smart phones”. Heck..!! There are now even mobiles phones manufactured and marketed as "Facebook Phones"..!!

The question staring in everyone’s face undeniably is "Facebook से बच कर कहा जाओगे"?

Right now not being on Facebook is not the smartest thing to do, especially when one has a wonderful brand ..

.. so far only "desi" 2 wheeler companies have been active on Facebook..!!

[Note: Only "Motorcycle" Fanpages have been covered in this study]

This Facebook phenomenon also presents huge opportunities for corporate entities to reach out to its consumers. There already are a few Indian 2 Wheeler companies which are trying to leverage the reach of Facebook with their "Official Fanpage".

As the year 2011 comes to an end, posted below is a study of the Official Facebook Fanpages (compiled by myself) of our "desi" 2 wheeler brands/companies. Lets try to study the success/failure of these Fanpages and gain some insight on what it takes to create and maintain a vibrant Official Facebook Fanpage for our "desi" 2 Wheeler companies/brands.

I. The successful ones so far

Bajaj was the first Indian 2 wheeler company to start an Official Fanpage. They started the Fanpage for its “Pulsar” brand somewhere in mid 2009 and till date that remains the sole Official Facebook Fanpage of Bajaj.

With over 531,000 plus lakh fans the My Pulsar Fanpage is the largest for an Indian 2 wheeler brand.

After around a year of Bajaj starting it Pulsar Fanpage, TVS too jumped into the Facebook bandwagon and following Bajaj it too started a Fanpage for its "Apache RTR" brand. This page currently has around 422,000 plus fans and thus comes in second in terms of its number of followers.

Just after days of unveiling its new corporate identity in Aug 2011, Hero Moto (earstwhile Hero Honda) started its official Facebook Fanpage. But unlike Bajaj and TVS, instead of a product brand, Hero opted for a Facebook Fanpage for its new mother brand, i.e. "Hero Motocorp".

The Fanpage has managed to get around 107,00 plus fans so far.

Another vibrant Indian 2Wheeler brand on Facebook is Royal Enfield. The official Royal Enfield Fanpage has garnered around 82,000 plus fans and of late has become quite active.

Learnings from the success of the above Fanpages:

These Fanpages represent i.e "Pulsar", "Apache RTR", "Hero" and "Royal Enfield" are very popular and brands established over many years. Therefore it's not very difficult to get fans on these Fanpages.

Royal Enfield very recently has created separate Fanpage for its "Classic and Electra" brands, something which I am not sure is the right step. Bajaj might have pulled it off with its "Pulsar" brand and TVS might have followed the same strategy with its "Apache RTR" brand since both the product brands of these 2 companies are very different in character from its mother brand.

For "Hero" and "Royal Enfield" it makes sense to promote mother brand as their products are not that differentiated enough from each other and has varying degrees of commercial success in the market.

II. The ones which failed to create a stir

[1] Mahindra Motorcycles

The Official Mahindra Motorcycles Fanpage was started soon after the "Mojo" and "Stallio" were unveiled in Sep 2010. The reason why I have included this Fanpage on ones which has failed to cause a major stir is because its number of fans has remained nearly static at 20 plus thousand since the beginning of 2011.

Also the level of interaction of fans on that page is not very high. But then with no motorcycle currently available from Mahindra stables what else can one expect from the fans?

[2] Yaari Ki Gaadi (Splendor NXG Fanpage)

This particular Fanpage infact was the first Official Fanpage by Hero Honda (now Hero Moto). Obviosuly started to promote the Splendor NXG model along with the "Yaari Ki Gaadi" campaign.

With low level of interaction/contricution of the fans on this Fanpage, Hero seems to have forgotten this Fanpage altogether as the last update by them on this Fanpage was in Jan 30 2011..!!

Started at the same time as the TVS Apache RTR Official Fanpage, the dismal number of fans (424) clearly indicates that the TVS Jive has not clicked on Facebook.

Learnings from the failure of the above Fanpages:

The main learning from the above example is that a Fanpage cannot create "fans". A Fanpage is effective only when there are "fans" around for that brand. One should not expect a Facebook Fanpage to act as a promotional tool, especially for a new brand.

The other learning is that of relevant target group. I would like to believe that the major chunk of "active" Facebook users belong to the younger age group. Expecting this young consumer to become excited for something like a Jive, Stallio and Splendor NXG which are simple and sober commuter bikes is a bit too much.

III. Big international brands that surprisingly aren’t so big in India on Facebook

Big brands like Kawasaki, Harley Davidson, Ducati and Triumph even though very new in India are internationally established brands. One would expect these big brands to easily attact huge legions of fans in India.

Official India specific Fanpages of Kawasaki, Harley Davidson, Ducati and Triumph (products yet to be launched in India but Facebook Fanpage is already up..!!) are there on Facebook. But a glance at these Fanpages paint a surpising picture. Compared to the "desi" brands, the international brands have very less number of fans.

Learnings from the lukewarm response to the above Fanpages:

One of my hypothesis is that the customers who buy these imported stuff belong to 30-35 plus years (age when there is a sufficient balance). Also at this age people usually won't be that active on Facebook compared to the young generation.

The other hypothesis could be that these companies might not have really spent on trying to promote their Fanpage on Facebook by paying for the ads which appear on the right hand side of the Facebook page.

Success of the "Mahindra Racing Fanpage"

Mahindra might not have been successful with the "Mahindra Motorcycles Fanpage" but its "Mahindra Racing Fanpage" is relatively active with 145,472 fans who also are interested in Mahindra's 125 cc Moto GP racing exploits.

Learnings so far from the Facebook Fanpages of our "desi" 2 wheeler brands: Summarized

Having a Facebook Fanpage might not be the most important thing for the marketing dept. of a 2 Wheeler company nor does setting up of Fanpage ensure hords of instant fans. For example how many fans can one expect for the world's largest selling motorcycle model for 10 years, the "Hero Splendor" if a Fanpage is setup for it.

But then right now not being on Facebook is also not the smartest thing to do, especially when one has a wonderful brand it would cost a tiny fraction of the meaningless endorsement fees of a cricket/bollywood star. It's surprising that so far only the "desi" 2 wheeler companies have been active on Facebook..!! The Japanese brands Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki operating in India have not yet tried to leverage Facebook in a bid to build its brand.

More than Honda and Suzuki its Yamaha which despite wonderful products like the "FZ" and "R15" is losing out big time by not interacting with its fans on Facebook.

Indian Auto Publications reviews the KTM 200 Duke..!!

A couple of prominent Indian auto publications have got the opportunity to ride the KTM 200 Duke, posted below are the highlights from their reviews and also the respective links to the full reviews.

Summary of the various reviews:

The KTM 200 Duke is an "Out and out Street Hooligan"
Quality and Fit and Finish is of high order
The liquid cooled, short stroke engine loves to be revved hard
