Every year over the Indian summer, the heavens open and the monsoon soaks the earth with life-giving rains. The steamy months of July and August melt into September, but come October, we celebrate autumn with the opening of our camp. Set on the outskirts of Ranthambore National Park – transformed by the rains into a lush, emerald-green paradise – Aman-i-Khás is filled with anticipation at the start of every season. What will the first safari reveal?

This year we experienced a noticeable increase in rainfall, and the burgeoning vegetation that sustains the wildlife of Ranthambore is now a wildlife photographer’s dream backdrop. The luxuriant foliage contrasts brilliantly with the contented animals, and the feeling of rejuvenation is palpable. With many of the trees bearing fruit, there are a myriad birds and animals – possibly a more vibrant population than ever before. But what of the tigers – the park’s most sought after inhabitants? As soon as I entered the park for the first time this season, I was struck by the breathtaking views. Bird calls filled the air and the bush hummed with life.

As soon as we reached Zone Four, I asked our driver to kill the vehicle’s engine, and we sat, in the living silence, waiting for a possible warning call. Within 10 minutes, we heard langur monkeys shrieking from the tree tops, along with calls from a herd of sambar deer. Both groups were looking in the same direction, and our hopes for a tiger sighting grew. A few moments later, we saw fresh prints on the wet ground from the vehicle: A tiger was definitely in the vicinity. As if curious about our presence, it wasn’t long before this beautiful tiger appeared, perfectly framed by the lush green bush.

Early morning light is fleeting, yet nothing short of magical. It casts its spell over everything it touches, making for some spectacular photographic opportunities. Thrilled to be in the right place at the right time, I waited patiently as the tiger moved out of the bush, and every painstaking minute spent focusing through my viewfinder was rewarded. This is only one of the season’s early sightings!

The season has started on a fantastic high, with three tigers spotted on day one, and four new cubs reported. I look forward to many more encounters over the coming months, and will continue to share these moments with you and others beyond the park’s borders. Tiger Dance Festival - Thrissur, India

The Tiger Dance Festival celebrates the harvest festival of Onam and the beginning of their New Year. This tradition is celebrated with great enthusiasm in the village of Thrissur which is located about 50 miles outside of Cochin. The festival takes place on the fourth day of the ten day Onam festival.

This popular festival highlights a popular folk dance in which participants simulate a tiger being stalked by a hunter. Young people dressed as tigers, leopards and panthers, enacting a play of the hunter and the beast.

Layers of paints are applied to the young boys and men participating in the dance. In the late afternoon, the participants put on their masks and dance continuously to the beat of the percussion instruments, cheered by the crowds. The dancing continues into the night. Interestingly the dancers are paid based on their the belly size! The tiger dance involves much shaking of the belly on which has a tiger face is painted on it.

The best place to watch the show is at Swaraj Round, Thrissur, where Pulikali troupes from all over the district assemble to display their skills. Date for the year 2014 is September 11.
