Gearing up for the documentary's release later this summer courtesy of Drafthouse Films, an official US trailer for "The Act of Killing" was released online today. Joshua Oppenheimer's acclaimed, troubling film has former Indonesian death squad leaders recounting the atrocities that they committed. Forgoing the usual format of talking-head testimony, they instead reenact the memories of what they did and experienced through various film genres of their choosing, from gangster to Hollywood musical.

The strange and disturbing nature of this conceit is on full display in the film's trailer.
At Cannes today, the Cinéfondation and Short Films Jury announced the 2013 Cinéfondation Prizes in a ceremony held at the Buñuel Theater. The first prize went to Anahita Ghazvinizadeh, a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, for her short film "Needle," which follows a young girl who is going to get her ears pierced. In addition to a €15,000 cash prize, Ghazvinizadeh is also promised the opportunity to show her first feature film at Cannes in the future.
The second prize was awarded to "Waiting For The Thaw," directed by Sarah Hirtt, a student at INSAS in Belgium.
The third prize was shared between Tudor Cristian Jurgiu of Romania's UNATC and Matúš Vizár of Czech Republic's FAMU for their respective films "In the Fishbowl" and "Pandas."
Now in its 16th year, the Cinéfondation has continually devoted itself to supporting and championing filmmakers of the next generation.
This Sunday, May 26 at 12:01am PT, 15 new episodes of "Arrested Development" go live on Netflix, and plenty of people are ready to settle in for hours and binge-watch the lot of them, show creator Mitchell Hurwitz's advice to the contrary be damned. Until then, though, Netflix has been pretty stingy about the details of the new season, with cast members like Jessica Walter watching their words when talking about the installments and the trailer foremost serving as a reminder that all of the main characters are returning. The company released four new short clips today, which you can watch below, and while they don't offer much more by way of hints about what's to come, they provide an assurance that the show's sense of humor hasn't gotten any less odd in its time off the air.

David Lowery's "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" finally has a trailer, so that everyone who wasn't lucky enough to see it at Sundance or at Cannes, where it's coming off a set of special screenings as part of Critics' Week, can get a hint of what the fuss is about.
The film is set in Texas Hill Country in the 1970s and stars Casey Affleck as an outlaw who escapes from prison in hopes of reuniting with his wife (Rooney Mara) and the child he's never met. Reviewing the film at Sundance, Eric Kohn wrote that "As beautifully shot as it is performed by its two leads, 'Ain't Them Bodies Saints' channels genre expectations into sheer poetry." The lyrical trailer, below, highlights some of that poetry in its magic hour gorgeousness -- the film will open in theaters on August 16, courtesy of IFC Films.

Ahead of its world premiere in the Director's Fortnight at Cannes today, Well Go USA has acquired all North American rights to "On The Job." Directed by Erik Matti, the Filipino crime thriller was inspired by a real-life scandal in which prison inmates were temporarily released from prison to work as contract killers on behalf of corrupt politicians. The cast includes many of the country's most popular mainstream actors, including Piolo Pascual and Gerald Anderson.
"'On The Job' reiterates that it is an exciting time for Filipino cinema," said Doris Pfardrescher, President, Well Go USA Entertainment. "We are thrilled we were able to acquire the movie before its premiere in Cannes and can’t wait to bring it to audiences in North America."
Following its premiere on the Croisette, Well Go USA plan to theatrically release the film stateside in the fall.
"All the hard work and patience has paid off," added Matti. "After almost four years, we have finally seen this movie cross over...

Guillaume Gallienne's "Me Myself and Mum" won the two top prizes at the 45th Directors' Fortnight, earning both the Art Cinema Award and the Society of Dramatic Authors and Composers' Prize.
Serge Bozon's comedy-thriller "Tip Top" also received a special mention by the SACD jury. Prize for best European film in Directors' Fortnight went to "The Selfish Giant," the narrative debut of Clio Barnard ("The Arbor").
In "Me Myself and Mum," an adaptation of Gallienne's one-man show, is based on his own story of a childhood in which everyone -- including his mom -- assumes he's gay. Gallienne plays himself in addition to other roles; Diane Kruger co-stars.
"Tip Top," an adaptation of Bill James' novel, stars Isabelle Huppert and Sandrine Kiberlain as detectives investigating the murder of an informant.
"The Selfish Giant," a very loose adaptation of the Oscar Wilde fairy tale, was acquired after its premiere for North America by Sundance Selects.

"Lifetime Movie" brings connotations of rickety production values and hastily adapted true-crime subject matter like the Jodi Arias case (which will indeed be enacted on the channel in "Dirty Little Secret" -- announced just a week after the verdict was handed down and set to air on June 22). But the network also makes periodic ventures into higher-end programming -- 2009 found Bob Balaban directing Joan Allen and Jeremy Irons in 'Georgia O'Keeffe," Lindsay Lohan and Grant Bowler (ahem) got attention for last year's "Liz & Dick" while Kenny Leon helmed an African-American remake of "Steel Magnolias," and "American Psycho" filmmaker Mary Harron is attached to "Anna Nicole," scheduled to air in June.

The director of "Ring of Fire," the Lifetime original June Carter Cash biopic starring Jewel that's set to premiere Monday, May 27 at 9pm, is another name that will be familiar to indie film fans -- Allison Anders, a prominent figure in the independent scene of the late...

Steven Soderbergh's highly anticipated Liberace biopic "Behind The Candelabra" will air on HBO this Sunday after receiving rave reviews at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this week. Starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, the film is adapted from "Behind the Candelabra: My Life With Liberace," by Scott Thorson with Alex Thorleifson, newly re-published by Tantor Media with a new afterword written by Thorson. You can buy the book here, but Indiewire has the complete first chapter below.

On November 11, 1918, headlines around, the globe trumpeted: PEACE! World War I, the war to end all wars, had come to an end. American doughboys were headed home and with them came a new sophistication, a new worldview. A popular song posed the question, “How’re you gonna keep them down on the farm after they’ve seen Paree?”

There would be no keeping the boys who fought their way across Europe “down on the farm.” America was poised on the brink of an urban explosion that would be fueled by a...

It was no surprise really that American filmmaker James Gray would be asked for his opinions on immigration policy during the Cannes press conference for his latest work "The Immigrant," simply given that title. Still, his response was a solid one that shed a great deal of light on the defining reason he went down the period route (it's set in 1921) for the first time with this film.
In the film, Marion Cotillard gives a superb performance as Ewa, a Polish woman with a mysterious past who immigrates to New York in the hope of a better life for her and her sister. When her sister is detained by authorities and confined after she shows signs of illness, Ewa meets a seedy show runner (Joaquin Phoenix), who takes her in and forces her into prostitution. With the money earned, Ewa hopes to free her sister and be reunited.

"American Psycho" director may have seemed like an odd fit for a Lifetime Movie when the network's first announced it'd be working with her in October, but Mary Harron did chronicle the life of a famous pin-up in "The Notorious Bettie Page" -- Anna Nicole Smith may not be quite as iconic, but she's also not completely foreign territory for the filmmaker.
Now Lifetime has set a date for "Anna Nicole," which Harron directed and which stars Agnes Bruckner ("Blue Car") as the model and actress. The film will premiere on Saturday, June 29, at 8:00pm, and co-stars Martin Landau as Smith's 89-year-old oil tycoon husband J.
President George H.W. Bush hosted a screening of the film "Honor Flight" Thursday evening in Kennebunkport, ME. The documentary focuses on four World War II veterans and their journey to the memorial site in Washington, D.C.
“It was wonderful to see a community come together in such an extraordinary way," the former President and WWII veteran said. "The film’s ability to reach out to fellow veterans, friends, and family is what makes this country great. Barbara joins me in saluting everyone involved in 'Honor Flight' and congratulating the makers of this remarkable film for bringing this story to the big screen.”

“Honor Flight” focuses on four World War II veterans attempting to fly to Washington, DC to see the monuments dedicated in their honor. The film’s title comes from the Honor Flight Network, the organization responsible for the men’s journey to our nation’s capital. The program was founded by Retired Air Force Captain Earl Morse, a physician assistant who took...

In May 1971, Roman Polanski went to Monaco with documentarian Frank Simon to shadow the world's greatest Formula 1 racer, Jackie Stewart. The result, a personable chronicle in which Polanski appears on camera casually chatting with Simon and hearing about his craft, never received a proper U.S. release. Rarely screened around the world, "Weekend of a Champion" was praised by racing enthusiasts but otherwise remained a near-mythological sidenote to the more significant credits Polanski accrued during that major period of his career.
Four years ago, Polanski learned that the negative of the film was going to be destroyed in the U.K. and decided to salvage it by heading up a restoration. Now, an updated version of "Weekend of a Champion," including some 15 minutes of modern day footage added tacked onto the end -- has premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Sales company Submarine Entertainment is currently shopping around theatrical rights, but Brett Ratner's production company plans to...

We are rapidly approaching the July 5th release of the star-studded Sundance smash "The Way, Way Back," and if April's trailer wasn't enough for you, we've got new exclusive photos to help hold you over until then.
Scooped up by Fox Searchlight for a plum $10 million, the indie starring Steve Carell and Toni Collette undoubtedly hopes to become the 2013 version of 2006 Sundance favorite "Little Miss Sunshine." It's got the same distributor, two of the same leads, a similar summer release date, a similarly impressive ensemble cast, and its story focuses around a family supporting the dreams of a child. These factors had to factor into Fox Searchlight's decision to pony up all that dough.
"The Way, Way Back" tells the story of Duncan, a teenager who becomes friends with a water park manager during his summer break. Liam James plays Duncan while Sam Rockwell handles manager detail. Toni Collette plays Duncan's mom, Pam, and -- in perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the trailer --...

After a few title changes and long wait for James Gray fans (his last feature "Two Lovers" came out five years ago), the helmer's first period project "The Immigrant" finally premiered today in Cannes with many clamoring to know whether it would deliver the goods to come out of the festival as a surefire Oscar contender for distributor Harvey Weinstein. While some I spoke to didn't respond to the film's deliberate pacing (I did), the majority all agreed on one thing: Marion Cotillard is sensational in it.

As Ewa, the Polish illegal immigrant of the title film forced into prostitution by Joaquin Phoenix's character after arriving in New York, Cotillard gives a powerfully subdued performance full of hurt and anger that in my estimation ranks as her biggest achievement since playing Edith Piaf to Oscar-winning perfection in "La Vie en Rose." Part of that lies in the fact that she had to learn Polish to take on the role and speak English with...

Moments after leaving an early morning press screening of James Gray's "The Immigrant" in the final stretches of the Cannes Film Festival, I immediately encountered two extreme perspectives on the movie. Conversing with a pair of knowledgable cinephiles, one extolled the classical virtues of director James Grey's swooning tale, which finds Marion Cotillard playing a Polish immigrant pulled into prostitution by scheming showman Bruno (Joaquin Phoenix). Set in 1921, the elegant period piece reminded this man of no less than Elia Kazan's grimy New York dramas. But that was only one reaction. Another viewer called it a cheap imitation that benefited from Cotillard's investment in her tragic role, but suffered from a melodramatic Phoenix performance and an equally preachy score.

In my estimation, they're both right.

Gray's fifth directorial effort is a conflicting experience admirable and powerfully executed in parts, cold and meandering in others.
DirecTV's recently announced 10-episode original series "Full Circle" will be the television debut of filmmaker and playwright Neil LaBute, so it comes as no surprise that the project has netted an impressive, star-filled cast. Making it a little easier is the fact that the half-hour drama is essentially an anthology series. Based on the play "La Ronde," each episode will feature two characters, with one carrying over to the next installment to be paired with someone new until the show comes back around to one of the first people to appear -- a light commitment for an actor.
Set to star in the series are Tom Felton ("Harry Potter"), Minka Kelly ("Friday Night Lights"), Julian McMahon ("Nip/Tuck"), David Boreanaz ("Bones"), Keke Palmer ("Akeelah and the Bee"), Devon Gearhart ("The Wait"), Billy Campbell ("The Killing"), Kate Walsh ("Private Practice"), Noah Silver ("The Borgias"), Ally Sheedy ("Welcome to the Rileys"), Cheyenne Jackson ("Behind the Candelabra") and Robin Weigert ("Sons...

ABC's "China Beach," nearly forgotten today, was an incredibly ambitious show for its time. It aired from 1988-1991, long before our current "golden age" of dramas, and is tends to be brought up in context of the longer running series writer/producer John Wells served as showrunner on in its wake -- "E.R." A network drama set in the Vietnam War with a large, strong cast, a big set and a budget that covered helicopters and a prodigious amount of period music, "China Beach" was most celebrated for an ensemble led by strong women characters at a time when this was still a rare thing indeed. The series holds up very well on DVD -- and thanks to box set released last month by Warner Brothers, StarVista Entertainment and Time Life, that's where it can finally be revisited and reevaluated."China Beach" is about the Army's 510th Evac. Center (the "Five and Dime") near the front lines of the war, with the pilot set in 1967. The base does triage and emergency surgery for wounded...

Look, he said he was retiring from filmmaking. Filmmaking. Deadline reports that Steven Soderbergh, whose last movie before his indefinite hiatus from the medium "Behind the Candelabra" airs on HBO this Sunday, has now signed on to direct and produce "The Knick," a Cinemax series that will star Clive Owen. Apparently cable TV suits him just fine -- Cinemax, which is owned by HBO, will be giving a 10-episode season commitment to the period drama, which is set in downtown New York in 1900.
Soderbergh, who recently launched his own t-shirt vending website, is reportedly directing all of the episodes -- the series will be set at the Knickerbocker Hospital, where the staff conducts groundbreaking measures to push medicine forward at a time of high mortality. Jack Amiel and Michael Begler (both of "Raising Helen") are writing the series and executive producing alongside Owen, Soderbergh, Anonymous Content's Michael Sugar and Gregory Jacobs.
