Perhaps in a bid to boost Switzerland's economy, Swiss label Bally have paid tribute to its home roots for their Spring/Summer 2012 campaign, which sees Miranda Kerr and Julia Stegner pose in front of a breathtaking mountainous backdrop with two male models (Cedric Bihr and Robert Konjic) and even some animal friends. The unique campaign was photographed by Norman Jean Roy at the Gstaad Palace Hotel and sees the models feeding some goats and dining outdoors while clad head-to-toe in the label's luxurious new season offerings. Michael Herz, Bally’s co-creative director, commented on the new campaign:

“This season, we wanted to move outside the studio and embrace the roots of the brand. That’s important to the Bally customer and important to us, we’d already introduced the goat as an emblem for the brand, and having them there felt right. We wanted the images to feel charming and make you smile.”

The campaign was captured in late October this year, and will land in magazines starting with the January issue of L’Uomo Vogue, and other publications from February.

VIDEODRONE: CRUSHED BEAKS — "CLOSE UPS"

Banger single. Banger vid. Kitschy horror movies. Indiscriminate flashes of distorted faces and body parts. Blackest blacks. Whitest whites. Greyest greys. Never boring.Think Japanese kids getting carted off in fits of epileptic horror cuz they just had to watch that one episode of Pokemon (be warned though...f'real. Lotta strobe in this beast). Think happy punk-pop with a rough edge...but then don't because that categorization has always been used for every band ever. This stuff is cool.

Real pretty though. Incessant tunefulness. Simultaneously lo-fi, but infused with the ever-swelling grandeur of cathedral cooing. Big, but small. "Faster...but slower." --Martin Hannett. Clean, but not too pretty...and ohmigod does that dude have rabies? Lookit that foam dribblin out his mouth. Muh-fackles going Ian Curtis right in front of us. (Also, let's talk about that scene in 24 Hour Party People where Mr. Curtis goes into an epileptic fit and Peter Hook cops a cigarette from him. Hilarious).

Love this track. "Irresponsibly Loud." Ya know, and I might be alone in this (I usually am) but beneath all the electro clashing, those heaven-swept strums and the occasional keyboard fill...I can honestly hear a little bit of Buzzcocks' "Ever Fallen in Love." Come on, you hear it too.

Young London duo done damn well. Great. Can't stop shaking. Can't stop singing. Are we epilpetics because we listen to freaky-deeky off kilter music or do we listen to freaky-deeky off-kilter music because we're epileptics? Chicken or egg? Nick Hornby asked all the wrong questions.We always do.

in 2011's excellent "Circa" series

Nickolas Mohanna's Reflectors, in all its shimmering, explosive bursts of audible color, is yet another solid release from Australian label Preservation. It's the fifth of the imprint's "Circa" series of CDs, which has carried full-length titles from many other TOME favs, notably Quiet Evenings and their stunning Transending SpheresCD from earlier this year. So right away you should know that Reflectors is good. What you don't know is that it's actually this good. Now based in New York, Mohanna has previously studied under field recording and tape-manipulation veteran Bob Ostertag in San Francsisco, and subsequently learned a thing or two about the art of field recordings and found sounds. Evidence of which is here on this CD... somewhere.

Hidden, buried...—no—reflected is probably more apt. As cheesy as that comes off, don't try to look for those field recordings quite so hard. That's not the point, for the process here is somewhat invisible. With Reflectors, Mohanna draws a line between these real moments happening outside himself (field recordings), and the equally-opposite but nonetheless real moments happening from within (his performances, whether those be guitar, synth manipulations, or otherwise). These two extremes are blurred together, such that with the difficulty it is to tell what is what here, they ultimately become mirror images of each other, thus realizing an inherent "oneness" between reception and performance. Even in the album's ultimate track, "Particles," in which you can hear an airplane's engine fairly clearly, the sound is quickly and completely absorbed into a wash of throbbing synths that eventually swallows the mix leaving you left to wonder whether it really was what you thought you just heard. Was it... after all? Mohanna's natural surroundings become an integral part of his music—informing what is heard synth/guitar-wise, but also the music has an equal impact on the environments themselves as elements swirl together, compete for dominance and ultimately work towards the creation of these beautiful, holistic works—a sum that is much greater than its individual parts. And from this, we have an art form that is a psychic overhaul. An erruption of the mind. A hot, psychedelic sweat. A nervousness, a double-take, a distrust of the ego. All manifested through a series of 'tone poems' that build on harmonically sound foundations of smooth bass and succeed to bounce sounds, tones and drones off trampolines of tremolo, scathe synths with a distorted disdain, and leave the listener absolutely rapt in an awe-stricken gape.

And that gaping fool would be me after a run-though of "Color Theory" (see below), easily one of this year's most amazing singular pieces of music. It is a trance-enducing, celestial assualt on the senses. A light-bending, time-warping adventure, tones packed with inertia, lifting off and soaring across the sonic horizon to lord only knows where, you clinging disperatly to its trail of stardust. Utterly thrilling. Mohanna also gets damned pretty, like "Solar Mechanism," a gorgeous passage of rippled tones, all stretched way out like a cat woken up by a ray of sunshing slowly moving across the carpet. Pieces arc, moving linearly to round out into well defined shapes. And this may be Mohanna's strongest suit—these are all manageable packages of music. These are songs. Drones, yeah... but songs. And though his exact method may be fuzzy, to me it's all just beauty, even if it can get a little scary (and trust me, it does). Heavy tremolos, breath-taking distortions, a wide spectrum of sound, experiments with simultaneously dissonant/consonant layers. And of course that general dizziness. That blissout. That holy moment. A hot mess. Yes. Nickolas Mohanna, you are a hot mess. Or you've created one. Or I am one. Let's do it again.

CO-PREMIERE: THE KEVIN COSTNER SUICIDE PACT - "AFTER THE TRADE"

"After the Trade" could be about water and leaves and flowers and nature. It shouldbe. After all, the way these visuals all softly blanket themselves on top of one another in Rachel Evans' beautiful video for the Kevin Costner Suicide Pact makes it seem like the two (music + video) are inseparable. It's a gorgeous tribute to an equally gorgeous song, which gently ebbs out as an example of the band's daring voyage into pop forms while retaining the "ambient/drone" descriptor nicely. Slowly beating harmonies, tons of space and that delicate hum beneath it all, a lone signal slowly effected and morphed, taking on a life of its own while realizing a magnificent, once-hidden potential.

However... and I'm just saying... there is a distinct possibility this song is about the band's collective lament following the 2010 Denver Nuggets' blockbuster trade ofCarmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups.

America in the Coming Age of Electronics

Coupler's America in the Coming Age of Electronics is the first solo effort from Lambchop’sRyan Norris. It's quite a puzzle in that it manages to present itself both as an artifact of some fictional history (you'd think the Electronic Age would have arrived by 2011, no?) and post-apocalyptic planet of sound.

There are (at least) two traits about this record that keep it special in the current tape tsunami. First, the music is a fantastic brain massage. Textures are woven as sound sculpture in three dimensional, temporal space with extraordinary dexterity. No time wasted (or overcrowded). I haven’t heard vocal-ish tones (synthesized or sampled) as warm as Norris' melotron since Clara Rockmore’s theremin recordings ofTchaikovsky on Eno's OHM box.

And despite this "coming age of electronics," emotional heft is present in each mechanical breath. Amy Marcantel’s vocal melotron samples are treated enough to catch the ear with alien vowels, but without losing human warmth. John Connor and Skynet have made uneasy peace, or blown each other to bits to leave a lone android survivor singing their eulogy, all in the past's imaginary future. Take your pick.

The other special thing about this tape is that this compositional care is reciprocated in No Kings’ packaging. The semi-transparent acetate overlay (courtesy of Univers/Elementum & Horsehair Everywhere-er Geoffrey Sexton) is splashed with both vibrant psychedelic tones and charred Xerox artifacts to mesh with the minimal patterns on the white inner cards, giving depth to the cover and inviting you to play while you listen. The effect is somewhat similar to that crazy hologram LP cover out this year (2011) from Finnish electronic freaks Tuusanuuskat.

One of the most pleasant, inner eye-opening listening experiences I’ve had this year.

I'm not gonna act like I'm all up on the latin American punk scene, but I've read enough Maximumrocknroll to know when to pay attention. With a slew of singles already under his belt, Argentine fun-punker Carlos Rodriguez has seen fit to release another 7", this time under the brand spankin' new Hysteria label, and it's a banger.

Taking the typical sonic cues of past records, fluttering love, nostalgia and childlike wonderment, the album runs the gamut of punk rock influences, from sloppy surf to punchy cow-punk ("Y El Hospice..." almost has a rockabilly bite to it...but not enough to make me hate it!), but never relinquishing that sweet sweet sense of melody. Rodriguez's vocals are a spectacle per usual, running all over the place from anguished howling to staccato warbling to a husky coo (i really think he kinda sounds like Exene Cervenka on "24 Hs"...again, that's probably just me right?). I get a heavy New Jersey pop punk thing going...but not crappy high-school "my girlfriend dumped me at the skatepark" kind of pop punk. You know what I'm talking about right? Of course you do. You're no dummy.

Power-pop at its very heart, it's a great release for Mr. Rodriguez to hang his hat on and one that old fans and newbs can enjoy quite easily. Great guitar work on "Del Absoluto Vacio Surge Este" and relentless metronomic drumming throughout the whole thing.

British model and actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley features inside the December 2011 issue of Harper's Bazaar US where she wears a mixture of eye-catching tribal prints, stripes and statement accessories, as photographed by Greg Kadel and styled by Katie Mossman. She also gives the magazine a short interview, where she speaks about being an "Ugly Betty" in her youth. Rosie commented:

“I was a bit of an Ugly Betty when I was 15…. in trainers, with braids, a ton of makeup, plucked eyebrows. I had braces.”

Speaking on trying on those famous Victoria's Secret wings for the first time, Rosie says that it was a special moment for her:

“It’s still such a huge thing for a model. People kind of laugh about it and think it’s irrelevant, but I don’t know a girl in the world who would put those wings on and not feel, just for a split second, very special.”

In the interview Rosie also speaks on her rising acting career and how she got discovered after she interned at a modelling agency.
