“Garage country.” I just made it up so I’m not surprised you’ve never heard of it, but like all categories that end up with the “garage” tag, it’s a way to describe things that are hard to describe — things that have just as many elements as you may find in your garage.

For this week’s Sunday Night Chill, I thought I’d share some of my favorite tunes—old and new—that together in a playlist make sense, but separate can be hard to describe. They all share elements of folk, alt-country, blues, and a little somethin’ somethin’ one only finds in the garage. But whatever these songs have is worlds from what people consider “country” today, so I thought I’d share the better alternative of that twangy hill billy flare.

This song is rather long, but the story is just so sweet… sad, but sweet. It’s off Ellis’s new album  Lights From The Chemical Plant.

This one may be a little up-tempo for a Sunday Night Chill, but it’s about the humdrum blues, so you know… it balances out.

Those Darlins… that darlin’ outfit from Nashville.

Always good to stick in a classic. Tammy Wynette is just the coolest.

One of my favorite Tallest Man songs. This live version sounds just beautiful.

Remnose is my new favorite band from Michigan. They are, as I like to call them, garage country.

There’s a few ways to react to Seb Wilblood’s new track. You can do what I did — set “Blue Colour” to repeat and sit dumbfounded while the combination of lush chimes, a bottomed out minimal bass, and Leo Naylor’s vocals rob your senses of time and space — or you can play “Blue Colour” just once and possibly recover a lot sooner from the paralyzing beauty.

The two-track EP, which will be released via Skint Records, also features remixes from Apes and KRL. I can’t yet speak for the rest of the EP, but word has it it’s just as haunting— a far cry from Wildblood’s previous releases, but then… not really.

It’s the mark of a great producer to know when less is more and this sensitivity shines through with “Blue Colour,” Wildblood’s minimal approach gives the vocal plenty of room to fill the space. The outcome is nothing less than mezmorizing.

You may already be familiar with this British duo — their tracks “Blame it On the Youth” and a Bombay Bicycle Club remix have made their way into the Shuffle before.

Voyeur previously established themselves as pioneers of the young sub-label MadTech, and since then their classic house style has continued to mature. With this latest Rain Away EP, label boss Kerri Chandler positions his protégés in a more suitable standing on the main label, Madhouse.

The opening title track “Rain Away” is a standout addition to the EP, with it’s low-slung swing and classic chords. It has a deep groove and a soulful bounce that’s just as much the embodiment of house, as it is of the Madhouse sound.

Dude Skywalker is back with a new EP that draws inspiration from a slightly deeper, darker side of the moon.

Soular System enlists the vocals of Mary J Blige and her track “Family Affair.” Dude Skywalker flips it into a groovy, sensual house tune re-titled “Let’s Get It Perculatin.” And while it’s just as hot as the original, this new hybrid is perfectly constructed for feet shufflin’ and shoulder bumpin’ on the dance floor.

The EP is fit with a crazy good dub version of “Perculatin” and a third track called “Footsteps,” a grimy, deep house tune that’s packed with so much emotion that it’s easy to lose yourself in it.

All in all, the EP is another example of just how much these guys can kill it. What’s even better, the Dudes of Skywalker hit up Indie Shuffle to break the release and let you know that the whole thing is free for download, today. How rad is that?!

Also worth a listen is their recently released Together EP — the track ”Ya Body” now has a consistent presence in my playlists!

If you haven’t heard, DEVolution’s Transition EP is out now, available through iTunes. It features four solid tracks: “Admire,” “Too Much Heaven Ft. MNEK,” “Push Up,” and “With U.”

Speaking of Kolombo… what a great way to wake up. This hard-driving, hard-house remix is just the elixir I need to make the most of another soul-sucking work day.

Soldout is an indie electronic duo based out of Brussels. Oddly enough, Soldout (consisting of members Charlotte and David) was conceived in 2004 and have yet to sell out, in the negative sense. I mean, I can only assume if they’ve landed a remix with Belgium’s Kolombo that the band has managed to stay pretty darn cool. Then again, a remix with Kolombo could very well be their sell-out point, in the positive sense — Soldout might soon be selling out shows everywhere!

Kolombo’s remix is like a warm mug to pour all your weekend wishes in, and the contents of Soldout’s ”Wazabi” creates a powerfully intoxicating aroma. I don’t know about you, but I’ll be sipping on that ish all day. Let it be the pep in your 2-step.

Scenic is an Australian quartet fed on a steady diet of beautiful scenery and influences like Air, Phoenix, Piero Umiliani, and Sebastien Tellier. The band creates ultra scenic music that ranges from the sounds of baroque ’60s pop to ’90s acid house.

Their latest release off Future Classic is a cosmic journey of warbly bass bliss called “Ride The Thrill.” Scenic employs a dynamic selection of whirling, jetting fills, airy female vocals, organic instruments, and lots of padded synth layers. The end result is a track that’s so unbelievably late ’90s/ early ’00s sounding that I’m having a minor decade identity crisis — Fatboy Slim’s “Praise You” comes to mind. I’m currently floating in dance culture nostalgia. 

The track is free for download via iTunes,  so long as you’re in the right country. At any rate, keep an eye on the band via Facebook or SoundCloud as they’re probably soon to be your favorite spring/summer soundtrack.
