Be sure to watch it full screen here or check out the original at Motionographer.

Here is yet another fantastic installation of the “That Makes Me Think Of” video series from Ze Frank over on Time magazine. I really think that Ze Frank has hit his stride. It’s unfortunate that Time’s video site doesn’t cleanly archive all of the series together. Perhaps they’ll get it right eventually.

Another helpful primer that does a good job of explaining what’s happening with the Iranian protests, who the cast of characters are, and where things might be headed. Produced by NPR’s Fresh Air, the interview features Karim Sadjadpour, a political analyst from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. The conversation gets quite informative, especially during the second half. It runs 45 minutes in total.

Listen here: mp3 – iTunes – Feed.

I’ve included the audio here on Indigo Spot as well. The interview contains some good insights on Iran, it’s people, and it’s culture.

Marx issued a strong statement against the “greedy actions of the major labels” after hearing about the $1.92 million Jammie Thomas-Rasset verdict.

As a longtime professional songwriter, I have always objected to the practice of illegal downloading of music. I have also always, however, been sympathetic to the average music fan, who has been consistently financially abused by the greedy actions of major labels. These labels, until recently, were responsible for the distribution of the majority of recorded music, and instead of nurturing the industry and doing their best to provide the highest quality of music to the fans, they predominantly chose to ream the consumer and fill their pockets.

So now we have a “judgment” in a case of illegal downloading, and it seems to me, especially in these extremely volatile economic times, that holding Ms. Thomas-Rasset accountable for the continuing daily actions of hundreds of thousands of people is, at best, misguided and at worst, farcical. Her accountability itself is not in question, but this show of force posing as judicial come-uppance is clearly abusive. Ms. Thomas-Rasset, I think you got a raw deal, and I’m ashamed to have my name associated with this issue.

Richard Marx’s opinion carries no legal weight, of course, though it’s notable that his song “Now and Forever” was one of the 24 tracks for which Thomas-Rasset was ordered to pay. The track was actually played in court to verify that it was the same one retrieved from the tereastarr@KaZaA share folder—and one of the trial’s few moments of levity came when the judge asked why the playback of such a terrific song had been cut short? (He was apparently serious, preferring Marx’s smooth acoustic guitar to the No Doubt track that preceded it.)

Nobody is claiming that what Thomas did was right, but what the RIAA is charging for it is flat out wrong. If anything, the verdict should inspire other artists like Marx and fans of the musicians to revolutionize the way things are done.

I would like to see more artists take up their own labels and distribution, help out those who aren’t big enough to do so, and begin denying contracts to any studio involved with the RIAA.

With proper fan support, recording artists could leave the RIAA with the world’s largest back catalog of really lousy music and take the music game into the future without them.

(via enjoymentland.com)

Perhaps I should explain that the “optimal time profile” he suggests is the one that is associated with success in life. Zimbardo has written a book on this theory called The Time Paradox. I’ve just begun reading it, but it is fascinating.

In the video Zimbardo says,

“Many of life’s puzzles can be solved by understanding your time perspective and that of others.”

The truth of the statement is the word ‘understanding’. Seeking to understand others and to understand yourself will make communication that much easier. Solving problems becomes easier as well.

Christopher Alexander nails it. Attention to detail does not mean perfection. Perfection is not necessarily appealing either. The art is discovering what’s important and letting the rest fall as it may.

This is a great video. Ze has some interesting insight on the nature of the Iran election, the irrationality of political campaigns, and the structure of Iran’s government. There are a democratic elections of the President, but Iran’s government does not work in exactly the same way as ours. Watch, learn, think.

From the minute Colby saw the previews to the Disney-Pixar movie Up, she was desperate to see it. Colby had been diagnosed with vascular cancer about three years ago, said her mother, Lisa Curtin, and at the beginning of this month it became apparent that she would die soon and was too ill to be moved to a theater to see the film.

After a family friend made frantic calls to Pixar to help grant Colby her dying wish, Pixar came to the rescue.
