Huawei offers the new Huawei Ascend P1 and Ascend P1 S handsets to challenge the big guns for the title of the world’s thinnest phone. Huawei say that these will be Android 4.0 (“Ice Cream Sandwich” or “ICS”) devices at launch, and the press photos certainly show an ICS device. Other manufacturers are lagging behind with implementing ICS, and Huawei has the competitive advantage here. Both the P1 and the P1 S come with a 4.3″ 960 x 540 pixel super AMOLED touchscreen with a Gorilla Glass coating, a 1.5GHz dual core processor, an 8 megapixel camera on the back with 1080p video capture capabilities and a 1.3 megapixel one on the front for video calling.

Huawei claims that the P1 S (we guess “S” is for slim”) is the slimmest smartphone in the world at just 6.68mm thick. The standard P1 is a little thicker at 7.69mm, but it comes with a larger 1800 mAh battery compared with a 1670 mAh battery in the slimmer handset. The P1 S weighs only 110 grams, with the larger P1 coming in at 130 grams. The back of the handset is covered with a material called PPVD to help dissipate heat and comes in a variety of colours including metallic black, ceramic white and cherry blossom pink. Default Android features such as 3.5G connectivity, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS are present. The Ascend P1 and P1 S will be available worldwide starting in April 2012.

Motorola’s Droid Razr comes with 16 GB on-board memory and 3 color options – Classic Black, Pristine White or Purple. It will let you talk on the phone for more than 21 hours straight on a single charge. At 8.99 mm, the device is impossibly thin. The Razr MAXX comes equipped with 32 GB of total memory. The Droid Overdrive also includes the two newly launched XyBoard tablets by Motorola with dual-core 1.2 GHz processors and you also have a choice of 10.1-inch or 8.2-inch. The entire range of Droid phones and Tablets will be upgraded to Android™ 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Keeping them company will be a full suite of accessories such as the 10.1-inch Lapdock 100, 14-inch Lapdock 500 Pro with built-in webcam and Ethernet connection, HD Dock, HD Station and vehicle navigation mount. Each device offers one to customize your Droid phone or Tablet to the fullest. Stream music, photos and videos from home or work computers with MotoCast™, or automate everyday tasks by creating rules using Smart Actions.

Motorola’s upcoming Droid 4 shows off it’s slide-out QWERTY keyboard and the chassis sports the same gently-angled corners as the RAZR though it’s not clad in the same carbon fiber-look kevlar. The camera hump is similar, though the 8MP lens, LED flash and speaker have been re-positioned. The Droid 4 will also ship with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and LTE network support. It’s dockable and features an edge-lit slide-out QWERTY keyboard. The display is 4-inch qHD touchscreen and a 1785mAh battery.

Liquipel specializes in innovative coatings and has created a product that will change the world of electronics forever. It is a microscopic coating that protects electronic devices from water damage, inside and out — saving us from accidental water damage to our precious devices. It lasts forever, protects against water and only costs $59.

Of course the coating techniques used have not been revealed to the public yet. To try this magical shield on, the company requires that you send in your Apple, Samsung, HTC or Motorola device. Even the remote possibility that this coating actually works would revolutionize the entire consumer electronics industry. Liquipel permanently bonds on the molecular level to your device, inside and out. It is not visible to the human eye, virtually undetectable and Liquipel will not compromise the look, feel, and performance of your electronics. Liquipel penetrates the entire device as a whole, including all of the vital components inside and out to provide optimal protection against accidental contact with liquids.

Don't forget the GLONASS support with GPS and custom MIUI ROM.

The Xiaomi Phone or the Mi-One or the ‘Millet’ as translated by Google from Chinese is a phone that defies categorization by slotting itself in a price range that is way below the competition yet battles it out with the ‘big boys’ in the Smartphone War for Supremacy that is seeing new entrants with dazzling ammunition and disarming accessories galore. Let me make it clear why this phone can hold it’s own, even amongst the newest entries debuting at the CES 2012. Visit the Facebook Page of Xiaomi.

Hardware

Hardware from China raises a few eyebrows, so I’ll make it clear right from the start that these phones are manufactured using Foxconn‘s tooling and Inventec‘s manufacturing resources. Unique to the Xiaomi Phone is the 4-inch 850 x 480 transflective LCD which while dated, offers outdoor performance significantly better than AMOLED panels. Let’s start with the Hardware Specifications:

Qualcomm MSM8260 SoC 1.5GHz dual-core chip

Adreno 220 graphics processor

WCDMA/GSM, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS+GLONASS

1GB RAM

4GB ROM

Micro SD card up to 32G

149g

4.0 inch TFT-ASV screen @ 854×480 pixels

8 Mega Pixel Camera with 1080p Video Recording

Codec support: MP3/AAC/AMR/OGG/M4A,MID/WAV/3GP/MP4

1,930mAh Battery

Software

The software is Xiaomi’s home grown OS called MIUI known widely through Android Fan circles as a custom ROM available for many other phones as well. It is based on CyanogenMod’s AOSP drivers and offers iOS users a welcome transition from Apple iPhones. The ROM is highly customizable with a plethora of Themes available that change everything from lockscreens to icons to the underlying framework for Android interface. The launcher is reminiscent of the iOS and has no App Launcher like Android. Instead it houses all icons on the screen itself. With multiple customizable screens and Widget support, it offers the best of both worlds for fan boys from both sides. The power widget is built into the notification bar allowing you access to most of the phone’s functions at the flick of a thumb. You can even set your own level for the battery warning and change the battery appearance. The dialer is T9 friendly and the messaging system is extremely friendly and supports threaded messaging. The Backup app allows backup of settings, call logs, messages and all applications. The File Manager allows you to browse by file type (music, videos, pics, apk, etc.) and even supports FTP. The call blocker app, allows for a white list, black list and SMS text filter which can toggle automatically at a set time. The Data Monitoring app and the Firewall app allows for complete control over your applications, enabling you to keep a sharp eye on the data usage. The Camera app offers anti-shake, continuous shooting, self-timer, filters (B&W, sepia and negative), scenes (night, theater, beach, snow and many more) and skin enhancement. The Browser supports tabbed browsing, full-screen browsing, URL prediction and Flash support. However all this is just eye candy compared to a robust feature called the Dual Partition system which allows you to use MIUI as one ROM and another Custom ROM if you so desire by dual booting. This allows developers and flash-frenzy fans to experiment with numerous ROMS and settings while being secure that they have a failsafe to fall back on. Pretty nifty feature this! Still remember that since both partitions share the same database, this setup doesn’t allow a MIUI ROM and a vanilla Android ROM to co-exist on the same device, nor does it support a major version jump (like 2.x to 3.x or even 4.x) between the two partitions as that would require a full wipe.
Samsung and Google decide to postpone the new product: Nexus Prime with Ice Cream Sandwich.

As you can see above, the Galaxy Nexus is looking to be a striking device, and from what we can see of Ice Cream Sandwich right there, that’s looking to be quite the impressive update in and of itself. Now, images may speak a thousand words, but the video below shows us plenty of features that we saw in a leaked ICS video a month back, but this video is far more complete and straightforward. We can see the blue highlights brought over from Honeycomb in the status bar and application icons. And it would seem that the icons for the Phone and Contacts apps have gotten a bit of a face lift.

But Samsung and Google have reportedly come forward and announced that the Galaxy Nexus has reportedly been delayed. Perhaps not the device itself, but the announcement, anyway. We thought we’d be seeing the handset, along with Ice Cream Sandwich, at the Samsung Unpacked event, but that doesn’t look to be the case anymore. “Samsung and Google decide to postpone the new product announcement at CTIA Fall. We agree that it is just not the right time to announce a new product. New date and venue will be shortly announced.”

Is this delay in memory of Steve? iWonder

The Samsung Note features a 5.3-inch (1280 x 800 Super AMOLED) display with a stylus for note-taking, drawing and grabbing screen captures. It runs Gingerbread with LTE and HSPA+ handset, dual 8MP and 2MP cameras, a removable 2,500mAh battery and the Samsung-made dual-core 1.4GHz processor. The design of this phone is very simple but this is part of its attraction and the device holds it own against many of its more extravagantly designed rivals. The screen deserves to be backed up by a hefty resolution and Samsung have done themselves proud in this area by giving the phone a huge 800 x 1280 quality. This means that rather than lose quality by adding some extra size the handset delivers a standard higher than many of its smaller screen counterparts with a pixels per inch count of 285.

Android 2.3 comes layered with TouchWiz on top with seven home screens and a touch-optimized interface dubbed “S Pen” designed to take advantage of. Apps include S Planner, a native calendar and to-do list app, from which you can drag and drop appointments, changing time slots without having to open an entry. S Memo for note-taking, meanwhile, accepts voice, photo, text and handwritten input. Virtual Whiteboard offers a more collaborative form of note-taking. Samsung is releasing the S Pen SDK to third-party developers to create more apps for organizing photos and drawing, among other things.

Capcom’s mobile division, Beeline Interactive, has announced that their popular iOS hit “Smurf Village” is available now on Android - Download here!

Capcom’s mobile division, Beeline Interactive, has announced that their popular iOS hit “Smurf Village” is available now on Android – Download here! Smurf Village uprooted Angry Birds on the gaming revenue chart & became so popular that Apple had to put a warning on the Smurf Village page reminding players (and their parents) that while Smurf Village is a free game, it costs “real money” to accelerate the game play. The warning tells parents how to disable in-app billing.

Smurf Village is a game where you create a village for your Smurfs to live in. The graphics are based on the 1980′s Smurf cartoon rather than the 2011 Smurf movie, but it’s great fun all the same. You can create different mushroom houses for each of your Smurfs in a city like simulation very similar also to the Bug Village game by GluMobile. Smurf Village is free to download and free to play. You can use in-app purchases to move your village building along a little quicker. You start with one mushroom, one plot of land and the wisdom and guidance of the red-hatted Papa Smurf. Download here!
