Queuing Theory is one of the branches of Operations Research and used as one of the decision making tool. This theory solves queue but does not give optimal solution not like the other tools. This theory provides measure of performance of a system stated by Taylor and Russell. As IE we are able to solve long waiting line using this Theory. Any businesses need to increase their customer’s service satisfaction and income. to achieve this goal, waiting line is one of the factors need to be considered. Only IE can do this. That is our pride.

Industrial Engineers give big contributions to the industry. Industrial Engineers motto is continuous improvement and this is what we do. Any businesses, services, organizations, and even our country needs improvement therefore IE’s can give big contributions for this goal. Even though IE are not popular not like other engineering courses yet IE is very flexible in any job. Only Industrial Engineers among other Engineering courses know about accounting, marketing, operations research, time and motion study, ergonomics, etc. In addition, one of the things we can do is to eliminate idle works in order to maximize the profit and efficiency of the company. The industry needs IE’s and so we must be recognized in the whole world.

I firmly believe that Philippine has many potentials to be competitive in the whole world. The Philippine has many natural resources and hardworking, committed and effective workers. Yet, our country needs improvement to be able to use these.

On the other hand, Industrial Engineers motto is “continuous improvement.” We provide decision-making tools and scientific tools for this matter. Using these tools, we are able to get optimal solutions and measure performance of a company.

In addition, we have knowledge in marketing, accounting, methods engineering, working measurements, operations research, facility planning design, ergonomics, production planning and control, inventory management, industrial processes, strategic planning, business policy, quality control, and forth. For these reasons, we are flexible and globally competitive.

I have learned and experienced how many times IE are discriminated and not appreciated in our country “The Philippines.” The industry and the government don’t give too much attention to this course. That is why, this career is not recognized in our country. In other countries, on the other hand, Industrial Engineers are recognized and appreciated, that is why their country is competitive because of IE’s contributions in their industry and society.

Note: I just post this to encourage IE students. I don’t want them to be discouraged by criticisms. No offense and I just want to enlighten IE students about the reality and don’t want to lead them to be boastful.

The advantages are:

1. Standardization of the IE curriculum

I was a transferee from RTU to TIP, comparing the curriculum, there is a little bit of difference. In TIP, no subjects like Human Behavior Organization, Project Management, etc. In RTU, no subjects like Strategic Management, Industrial Organization Management, etc

2. When you get the top in the board exam or take exam for one time, spending long years in college will be worthy.

3. No criticism

According to other engineering students, they called us as an Instant Engineer…so what they are ON CALL ENGINEERS

Why taking IE board exam is not so necessary?

1. Review many many subjects

Unlike Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, etc they have their core topic. For civil, their basic is Engineering Mechanics, for electrical, DC AC subject, for Mechanical, thermodynamics. etc... For IE, we do have Operations Research, Ergonomics, Methods Engineering, Accounting, Statistics, Quality Control, Economics, Production Planning and Control, Inventory and Materials Management, Strategic Management, Systems Engineering, and many more. There are IE subjects related to other IE subjects, but majority of IE subjects are not so related with others. IE has many fields and no IE can say the basic topic we should review well.

2. IE has no big responsibility to people’s safety nor health and its not self employed work.

If you are a patient, do you want to undergo a surgery to a fresh graduate doctor? Definitely NO!

If you want to build a building, do you want a fresh graduate Civil Engineer to build it for you? Definitely NO WAY

hahahaha…these courses have a big responsibility to people and once they did wrong, it will lead people to accidents or maybe death. Uhhhh!

An electrical may do failure design of wiring that will cause fire. A Civil may miscalculates the materials require that would cause a building collapse. That is why their knowledge must be evaluated well by conducting a board exam. Even teachers, they must take exam to be able to know how knowledgeable they are to teach their students. Do you get the point now?

3. Passing board exam doesn’t mean immediate employment

I know some registered nurse (board passer), working as a call center agent, self-employed tutor, etc…. they say even applying as volunteered nurse is very hard. There are nurse who pay the hospital to have few months of experience there. I also know some engineering board passers who are offered to work as a Technical Support…(no offend to my friends, I just want to state the fact for the students who doesn’t know it yet but remember a destiny of one person is not the destiny of all people)

Unlike IE, we are very in demand. IE is one of the decision makers of the company that decides to hire or fire workers. IE do performance evaluation. They make decisions to hire fresh licensed graduate or promote skilled workers.

IE is very flexible. There are many times, I am questioned why I took IE by the interviewers? (Tip for the IE job seeker)…my answer is IE IS VERY FLEXIBLE… In a company, it has 3 common functions, financial, marketing and production. IE can work in any of it. IE can contribute in any of it.

For marketing, SALES ENGINEER is sometimes needed and IE is usually the qualification. FINANCIAL, we are also needed for that department. We are usually needed for Internal Control Department that conducts Audit. For monetary concern, Internal Control department do audit of cost, decide for cost reduction, estimation, etc. For this position, CPA and IE are always the qualification. (whaaattt CPA versus IE….!)

Through my experience, taking my OJT in MITSUBISHI, I was in the Internal Control Department. My supervisor is an IE. (I think she is not more than 30 years old but working as a Senior Supervisor…WOW)

I do IE works such as Time and Motion Study, Line Balancing, etc in Mitsubishi. My supervisor told us during our orientation that our works would be used for the standardization of each process.

Back to the topic, for PRODUCTION, there are many engineers here, including IE. The positions for IE’s are Production Assistant, Quality Control, and many more. In addition, I know friends and former classmates who work in a hospital, manufacturing, logistics company, college schools, etc …in short we can easily make a career change with still has relation to IE course. VERY INTERESTING COURSE RIGHT? Hahahaha!

Sometimes I answer, I took IE because I really want a management course, I want decision-making, but I want a mathematical approach.

Honestly, this time I am about to graduate two weeks from now and I decided to apply for Production Assistant position before my graduation. Fortunately, I am hired and will be working after school. No offense, I have a friend, a board passer, he has having a hard time to find a job. Its been 2 years since he graduated from college, he took board exam first and fortunately he got his licensed after three takes. But still he has no job. So sad…but remember a destiny of one person doesn’t mean a destiny of all people

SO Do you still have many questions why we should be called Engineer.

Remember, there is no law that prohibits us to use Engineer in our name. Engineer means improve and innovate things, and that’s our responsibility. Remember our goal is CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT.

If you don’t agree with this, I don’t care. I am an IE that is why I fight our credibility as Engineer. When I was a freshman in college, I didn’t know that it has no board exam…and when I learned that we don’t have. I told myself so what? Are we, the students, the cause not to have it? Of course NO! so why the other course criticized us. If we have a board exam, for sure we are able to pass them. But for me, it is better to pass a job interview than to pass the board exam. Hahaha! Because we badly need a job. That’s the students’ goal right?

(hahaha if they called us Instant Engineer, I give them an ON CALL Engineer name, because if they are not needed nor they dont have a project, they don’t have work) hehehe
