President Elect Barrack Obama hailed Cardinal Fastener Co. as an example to manufacturing industries, which has been able to sustain its growth charts in these recessionary times with their lean concepts based on the Toyota Production System since 1998. John Grabner, president of Cardinal Fastener believes that Cardinal’s lean initiative has led to increased efficiencies, decreased costs, and better and faster service to its customers.

Cardinal Fastener Company is today one of the largest American-made large-scale threaded fasteners and specializes in industrial fasteners used to bolt the wind turbine towers to their foundations. At present the company is sitting at revenue of $10 million annually and expects to increase it by 50% in this year.

Since its founding in 1968, Cardinal Fastener & Specialty Co., Inc. has become the largest and most responsive company in the hot forge bolt industry. With an emphasis on the processes and principles of Lean Thinking, Cardinal Fastener provides same-day service on most orders.

Obama also outlined strategy and plan of action for the revival of Industry. Following points were highlighted.

Doubling the production of renewable energy over the next three years.

Modernize more than 75% of federal buildings and improve the energy efficiency of 2 million American homes.

Putting nearly half a million people to work building wind turbines and solar panels

Constructing fuel-efficient cars and buildings

Developing the new energy technologies that will lead to new jobs, more savings and a cleaner, safer planet in the bargain.

Good luck Obama, we look forward to you.

The entire text of his speech given at the Industrial Fastener company is available here (pdf file).

12th National Industrial Fastener Show/West was held in on 2-4 November 2008 at Mandalay Bay Convention center, Las Vegas, Nevada.

It was no surprise that most of the talks were centered around the big recession and its effects on the economy. While many trade pundits are hopeful and predicting a U-Turn in the economic climate by the mid of 2009, but the situation is very fluid. With the daily dose of news about the spread of this recession to newer horizons and economy, the lookout is very dicy.

But one thing was remarkable in this otherwise successful Industrial Fastener Show. There was a considerable drop in the key numbers. Just take a look at the following numbers.

Number of Fastener Exhibitors: Decreased from 684 in 2007 to only 633 in 2008.

Total Registrations of Fastener Distributors: Decreased from 1577 in 2007 to 1373 in 2008.

Total Registrations: Decreased from 5620 in 2007 to 4913 in 2008.

Let’s see how it goes in 2009. What do you think ? Will 2007 still remain better than even 2009?

Fastener Industry has been facing unparalleled challenges to maintain growth and search for the market in these periods of recession. The importance of cost-cutting and adopting more efficient processes assume greater importance than ever before for the survival.

One of the area, where the Industrial Fastener industry seems to be lacking is that it is yet to exploit the powers of Internet to the fullest extent. And one small aspect of that is not having your own Online Catalog.

Why Fastener Manufacturers and Distributors should have Online Catalogs:

Lower costs: Yes, they save you $$$ as compared to paper catalogs. They save you on paper costs, printing costs, and costs associated with postage.

24 Hour Accessibility: Web is open 24 hours, 7 days a week. No office hours.

Wider Reach: Now your shop can be accessed from the every nook and corner of the globe.

Saves you Time: Now the marketer does not chase the buyer, instead the catalog does the job of the marketer.

Quick Changes: Who doesn’t make minor adjustment to their product lines. There are constant additions, deletions and modifications to the specs in the Fastener Indistry. But no worries with the online catalogs. It is just a matter of few clicks and your catalog is up-to-date.

Easy Transportation: If one person wants to send your catalog to a third party, then it is just a matter of an email, and you catalog gets transported to him in seconds. Imagine the case, when your catalog is printed on paper. I will think hundred times before sending your catalog to my friend in need of a reference.

Do we need say more.

Keep watching this space to know what makes a great online catalog.

P.S.: Do you have your online catalog? Tell us in the comments section, if you are into the Fastener Industry.

Prosecution Attorneys have agreed to drop the charges of manslaughter against Powers Fasteners Inc., the New York manufacturer of fast-setting Epoxy which was used in the construction of a Big Dig tunnel. Once section of the Tunnel, which is scheduled to be completed soon, failed to support the ceiling panels and crushed a car, killing a woman Milena Del Valle.

Milena Del Valle, was traveling in a car, which was being driven by her husband and was buried in lots of concrete on that tragic day. The incident happened in the later half of 2007.

Powers Fasteners was charged of failing to warn the construction contrators about the risks associated with using a fast-drying epoxy to secure ceiling panels through bolts.

As part of the settlement, the family of the deceased will get a total of $18.1 million from various parties involved including the construction contractor Modern Continental, Bechtel/Parsons Brinckerhoff and six smaller companies.

One of the attorney’s rightly said after the settlement was arrived, “Legally, it ends now. But emotionally it goes on forever” for the family.
