Delta Protection Commission Opposes Peripheral Tunnels!

<dcterms:alternative>Delta Protection Commission Opposes Peripheral Tunnels!</dcterms:alternative>

The Delta Protection Commission voted 9-2 on May 24 to oppose the Bay Delta Conservation Plan (BDCP) to build the peripheral tunnels as currently drafted. This is a huge victory for Delta advocates, fish, the environment and the people of California.

The construction of the twin tunnels would hasten the extinction of Sacramento River chinook salmon, Delta and longfin smelt and other fish species and take large areas of Delta farmland, among the most fertile on the planet, out of production in order to continue irrigating toxic land farmed by corporate agribusiness interests on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley.

I applaud Restore the Delta (RTD) Executive Director Barbara Barrigan-Parrilla and board member Bill Jennings, also Executive Director of the California Sportfishing Protection Alliance, for successfully urging the Delta Protection Commission to pursue a more cost-effective and sustainable water plan than building the proposed peripheral tunnels at the DPC meeting.

Since 1978 the State has received on average $600 million to $800 million annually for clean water programs that are administered by the State Water Resources Control Board (State Water Board) through the Clean Water State Revolving Fund. EPA officials estimate California needs $39 billion in capital improvements through 2026 for water systems to continue providing safe drinking water to the public. Instead, Gov. Brown is pushing a $14 billion twin tunnel project to ship relatively clean Sacramento River water around the beleaguered Delta estuary to western San Joaquin Valley mega-farms and Southern California development interests.

For the past 15 years, San Francisco's Mission District has undergone phases of real estate gentrification that came with each new technology boom. With information technology being the latest impetus, San Francisco has, on the street corners of certain neighbourhoods, new condominium towers being built. With the construction of new condos come upper-middle class newcomers, who can afford the high rents. In the process, local businesses have closed their doors, families, people with disabilities and illnesses & art spaces are evicted, using the Ellis Act. The following poem was originally inspired by the first signs of real estate gentrification in Oakland, but could easily be applied to San Francisco's neighbourhoods right now. Before we step into action to save homes, the first step is awareness of their potential loss.

Interview with SC Clean Team founder TJ Magallanes

<dcterms:alternative>Interview with SC Clean Team founder TJ Magallanes</dcterms:alternative>

Fourth generation Santa Cruzan TJ Magallanes knows all to well about groupthink, bullying and the problems that can develop when one expresses their thoughts within a community group. He has run several Santa Cruz community oriented Facebook pages, which have enjoyed various levels of success...and failure. He has tapped into the power of social media, and has used it to enact positive changes within our community. He started Santa Cruz's own Clean Team in response to piles of needles and tons of garbage being found in the caves at Cowells Beach. After struggling with city officials to get them to clean up the mess, TJ organized a group of people and rid the beach of almost 3 tons of garbage. The Clean Team was born!

The original goal of TJ's Clean Team was to both document, and pressure city officials to dedicate resources to clean up various litter-intensive hot spots around Santa Cruz. It has since morphed into something quite different. As you'll soon see, no good deed goes unpunished, and at least partly due to harassment, TJ is currently laying low out of state. Friends, I'd like to introduce you to TJ, founder of the original Clean Team!
