Tuesday nights game between the Coquitlam Adanacs and the New Westminster Salmonbellies featured two teams atop the BC Junior A Lacrosse standings. The league leading Adanacs have the top three league points leaders in Cole Shafer, Mathew Dinsdale and Vincent Ricci, so the Salmonbellies did not want to get in a shootout with the Adanacs as they have the most potent offence in the league. With a rivalry between these two teams you were sure to get your moneys worth Tuesday night in New Westminster.

The Adanacs power play which has been deadly all season got a early opportunity in the first when Salmonbellies Brandon Goodwin took a delay of game penalty just 1:43 in. The Adanacs were able to capitalize as Justin DaSilva was able to put one past New West goaltender Frankie Scigliano with the man advantage to give Coquitlam the early lead. The opening ten minutes of the game was tight checking as both teams did not want to give an inch to the other. The Salmonbellies were however able to solve Adanacs goaltender David DiRuscio 11:17 in to the opening frame as Luke Gillespie got New West on the score sheet. This goal seemed to spark the Salmonbellies as just minutes later Brandon Goodwill ripped a shot past the goaltender to give his team the 2-1 lead. The Salmonbellies however ended up giving the Adanacs a late power play when Sando Faldo took a four minute checking from behind penalty. Justin DaSilva was there to answer the bell again for the Adanacs notching his second power play goal of the period late in the first to tie the game at two. New West continued their undisciplined play late in the period as Steven Ferdinandi took a late two minute interference penalty along with a 10 minute game misconduct, then with just seconds left in the first Alex Lohr took a two minute cross checking penalty giving the Adanacs a two man advantage heading into the second.

The Coquitlam Adanacs were unable to capitalize on their early 5-3 power play as goalie Frankie Scigliano stopped all shots fired his way on the man advantage. After the penalty kill both teams continued playing tight defence, with both the Salmonbellies and Adanacs checking well and limiting the turnovers. However the Adanacs got into some penalty trouble themselves when Tyler Garrison took a four minute checking from behind penalty and Cole Shafer got two for roughing. The Adanacs were able to kill off both penalties with a very aggressive kill and some key saves from David DiRuscio. Cole Shafer who is currently leading the league in points was able to break the deadlock late in the second firing a shot past the goaltender with two minutes left. After two periods the Adanacs led the Salmonbellies 3-2 on the scoreboard and 21-17 in shots.

The third period began with both teams not wanting to budge an inch, the Adanacs and Salmonbellies continued to play good defence and check each other whenever the opportunity arose. Trent Hawke took a two minute hooking penalty 4:44 into the 3rd but New West were unable to capitalize on the power play and it would prove costly. Reid Reinholt was able to give the Adanacs a little breathing room when he put one past Scigliano giving Coquitlam a 4-2 lead. The Salmonbellies were all over the Adanacs in the final minutes of the third but David DiRuscio stood on his head for Coquitlam. With just 46 left to go in the game Salmonbellies Luke Gillespie was able to put in his second of the game on a sneaky play bouncing the ball in off the goalies back from behind the net to give New Westminster life. Challen Rogers of the Adanacs however had different plans, as just seconds later he showed off great breakaway speed as he beat the Salmonbellies defensemen wide and fired one past Scigliano sealing the win for the Coquitlam Adanacs.

The Final score was 5-3 Adanacs as they continue to lead the BC Junior A Lacrosse league, they also outshot the Salmonbellies 35-28. Next up the Adanacs will travel to Port Coquitlam to take on the Saints June 8th at Poco Rec Centre. As for the Salmonbellies they will look to get back to their winning ways when they host the Victoria Shamrocks June 3rd at Queens Park.

Sundays game featured two teams going in different directions, as the Nanaimo Timbermen who are at the bottom of the league standings faced off against the Coquitlam Adanacs, one of the best teams in the BC junior A league. With the Timbermen still looking for their first win of the season it would be a huge moral boost for the team if they could pull out a win Sunday in Coquitlam.

The first period did not start well for the Timbermen as Adanacs forward Tyler Garrison came in on a breakaway just 1:39 into the game and put one past Nanaimo goaltender Cory Mayzes. Both teams were playing good team defence early in the game which seemed to be the plan for the Timbermen as they did not want the high offence Adanacs to get rolling.

The Adanacs added their second of the period 8:24 into the first which came off the stick of Erik Klein. It didn’t take the Timbermen long to answer as Mitch Parker fired one past Adanacs net minder David DiRuscio to put the Timbermen on the board. The Timbermen then went on to take 3 straight penalties against the Adanacs which saw the home team fire in 3 power play goals off the sticks of Justin DaSilva, Cole Shafer and Andy Taylor. The Timbermen and Adanacs traded late first period goals and at the end of the first the score was 6-2 Adanacs, with the home team out shooting their opponent 20-5.

The second period began with the Timbermen being forced to put in their backup goalie Peter Dubenski as Cory Mayzes stayed in the dressing room getting his helmet fixed from a shot he took in the first. The Coquitlam Adanacs came out swinging in the second as they scored 5 goals in the opening 10 minutes of the period. Erik Klein added a pair of goals in the second giving him the hat trick, Justin DaSilva added his second of the game along with Matt Symes getting into the action adding a pair for himself. The Timbermen were unable to beat goaltender David DiRuscio in the second as the Adanacs led 11-2 after the second and were heavily out shooting their opponent 36-13.

The third was not as exciting as the first two periods as the first and only goal of the period came 7:06 into the period. It was Challen Rogers who tallied the only goal of the third as the Adanacs easily defeated the Timbermen 12-2. Cole Shafer led the was for his Coquitlam Adanacs as he racked up 6 points(1goal,5assists). The win gave the Adanacs the overall lead in the standings with 14 points, and as for the winless Timbermen they will go on to face the Langley Thunder June 2nd at the Langley Events Centre. Next up the league leading Adanacs will be heading to New Westminster to take on the Salmonbellies at Queens Park Arena May 29th.

The league leading Coquitlam Adanacs took on the Langley Thunder May 17th at Langley Events Center. If the Thunder could take out the Adanacs it would be a huge boost to their teams moral and also help them in the standings. Both teams came out in the first with a defensive minded game as the Thunder didn’t want the high offense Adanacs to get rolling. The first goal of the game came on a power play, with Matt Sweet in the box for high sticking the Adanacs Michael Messenger put one past goaltender Ryley Brown. That goal seemed to spark the Adanacs as from then on they were firing everything on net towards the Langley goaltender. Michael Messenger then put his second of the game in past the Langley net minder 13:11 into the first followed up by Matthew Dinsdale goal to give the Adanacs a 3-0 lead. Adam Will of the Thunder was able to put one past Adanacs goaltender David DiRusico late in the first to bring the Thunder back into it. The shots after the first were 14-6 Adanacs and the score 3-1.

The second began with a power play goal off the stick of Thunders Brandon Bull who recently returned to the team after his time in the NCAA.That was the lone bright spot for the Thunder as after that goal the Adanacs took over scoring six times in the second period, with Matthew Dinsdale leading the way scoring 3 in the period. Then Vincent Ricci, Challen Rogers and Cole Shafer also added goals for the Adanacs. The Thunder made a goalie change after the first 4 goals of the second putting in net minder Kennan Lambright but that didn’t seem to phase the Adanacs and they kept rolling. The score after the second had the Adanacs running away with this one 9-2 and out shooting the Thunder 30-20.

The Third began much like the second with Brandon Bull notching his second power play goal of the game 1:11 into the period. Vincent Ricci then added his second goal on the power play for the Adanacs to answer the Thunder’s power play strike. It was all special teams after that as Matt Messenger scored another power play goal for the Thunder. That would be the last score for the Thunder as the Adanacs specail teams took over after that with Michael Messenger and Conner Buchanan adding power play goals and Challen Rogers and Taylor Stuart each adding a shorthand goal for the Adanacs. From start to finish it was all Adanacs special teams as they scored 6 power play goals and 2 shorthanded and walked away with a easy 14-4 win over the Langley Thunder to stay atop the league standings.
