Who are you?
I’m a researcher and research project coordinator at the Charles University Environment Center in Prague. My academic background is in politics, international relations and development studies. I’m originally from New Zealand and I’ve been with the Environment Center for only the last two years. I live with my Czech wife and daughter in a small town called Louny about 60km north-west of Prague, so I have to commute to the capital each day by bus. Previously, I worked as a Senior Policy Advisor for the New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs (responsible for identity issues, i.e. passports, citizenship, births/deaths/marriages, etc) and before that the Tertiary Education Commission (the NZ government’s funding agency for all post-compulsory education).

What do you do?
I mainly coordinate projects on education for sustainable development (ESD) and I’m currently helping to establish the first Regional Centre of Expertise on ESD in the Czech Republic and the first behind the former Iron Curtain outside Russia. I’m also trying to work toward building and expanding ESD capacity and capability in the Czech Republic outside the capital. A lot of the job is about ensuring our own economic ‘sustainability’ by applying for project grants from various sources. My research interests are in governance issues related to environment NGOs and their impact on the public environmental policy making process, the barriers to ESD in formerly communist societies, and the politics of climate change.

What do you dream to achieve?
I’m too cynical and pragmatic to dream, particularly as someone working to strengthen the concept of ‘sustainability’ but whose personal carbon footprint is huge thanks to occasional travel across half the globe to New Zealand. However, I would like to think that I can help in some small way to improve public understanding of the environmental, social and economic challenges that face global society by enhancing the relationship between higher education research and the wider public, whether it’s through RCEs, university outreach programmes or the advancement of ESD in the Czech Republic and Eastern Europe. Great public awareness and understanding is the route toward achieving life styles that can be sustained over the distant future without further undermining our environment.

As quite well known, we are living in a consumer, respectively wasteful society. We know about the consequences of an excessive consumption – like outsourcing of mass production to low-wage countries, extensive raw material consumption, massive CO2 emissions that leads to climate change, – and we also know about different solution approaches as various films, books and other media aiming at awareness raising show. We know about our changing society where (social) isolation, unhappiness, depression, the pursuit of money and power become the rule than the exception. Synonymously quality-of-life surveys in the United States that have been done since the 1950s give the clear result about wealth not bringing as much contentment as people would have thought. Data from Andrew Oswald, professor of economics at the University of Warwick in Great Britain show that while the amount of suicides stayed quite the same since the 1900s the average income sextupled. The booming sector of the economics of happiness reveals the importance and urgency of a mind shift. What counts is the satisfaction of basic needs such as accommodation, food and employment as more money and according to this more possibilities for consuming only lifts someone spirits short term. People don´t recognize material wealth absolutely but compare themselves with richer people who always exist. So, happiness does not grow with income, as the quintessence of a survey in 37 countries, including 9 developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America and 11 East European countries on transition to market economy by Richard Easterlin, economist at the University of California in Los Angeles, and his team is.

We are aware of all that since the term sustainability came into vogue but we have not defined our very own solution by now. Not the way Bhutan has done with the Gross National Happiness (GNH) in 1972 as an indicator that measures the quality of life than only using the economic factor Gross Domestic Product. The four pillars of GNH are the promotion of sustainable development, preservation and promotion of cultural values, conservation of the natural environment, and establishment of good governance. Although criticized as it depends on more subjective factors, it nevertheless shows the importance of contentedness as our basic living and happiness factor. Such exemplary measures deserve imitation and should form our New Year´s resolution. It might be no final solution but a beginning.

Economics of Happiness

Ein Chor von Stimmen aus sechs Kontinenten fordert in dem Film „Die Ökonomie des Glücks | the Economics of Happiness” einen Wandel des Wirtschaftssystems. Der Film zeigt, dass eine bessere Welt möglich ist und weltweit bereits viele Initiativen dabei sind, eine neue, andere Zukunft zu schmieden. Im Anschluss findet ein Publikumsgespräch mit InitiatorInnen aus Österreich statt: Göttin des Glücks, Heavy Pedals, Ochsenherz und SEEG Mureck Bioenergie. Kommentare zu Film und ökonomischen Alternativen: Christian Felber, Publizist und Mitbegründer von Attac Österreich.
