HOW TO SUPPORT HOME QUARANTINE :

Support: Assigned family members to take care of bedridden patient helping them follow Doctor's instruction for medications and care.
Monitor Symptoms: Fever and breathing must be monitored regularly and reported immediately in case there is breathing difficulty or very high fever.
Protective Hygiene:

Avoid sharing household items like dishes, drinking glasses, cups, eating utensils, towels, bedding with patient. Throw used tissues in a patient lined closed trash can.
Linen can be soaked in hot water and soap for 30 minutes wash with water then dry fully in the sunlight.
Wash and disinfect clothes in warm water and soap, dry fully in the sunlight.
Washing machine: Use disinfectant soap, warm water for cleaning.
Place all used tissues, disposable gloves, face mask and other contaminated items in a lined container before disposing them with other household waste.

Clean and Disinfect: All high touch surfaces, such as counters, table tops, doorknobs, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tables every day. also clean any surfaces that may have stool, blood, body fluids on them.
Wash hands with soap water for at least 40 seconds or if soap and water are not available clean your hands with a 70% alcohol based hand sanitizer. Wash often especially after touching.

HOW TO SUPPORT HOME QUARANTINE FOR FAMILY MEMBER:

COVID-19 is a disease called Coronavirus Disease-2019, caused by a coronavirus named as SARS-CoV-2.

The COVID-19 virus can be transmitted in all areas, including hot and humid weather. The best way to protect yourself against COVID-19 is by frequently washing your hands with soap and water or alcohol/ chlorhexidine sanitizer, covering your cough, sneezes and avoiding crowded places etc.
Spraying with alcohol or sanitizer on cloths and body or consuming alcohol will not prevent you from getting infection. Infection spreads when the virus enters the body through nose or mouth. Cleaning and wiping hands with alcohol based sanitizer is to prevent the germ from entering your system through infected hands when you touch your mouth or eat food with infected hands.
Having a bath with hot water will kill the virus? Answer is the virus lives inside the body where the temperature is maintained at 37 degree Celsius and is not affected by a hot water bath that you have.

The medications storage and handling from outside of the pharmacy setting. The appropriate storage and handling of sterile medications requires sterile environment e.g. reconstituting, mixing, diluting and compounding.

Parenteral medications are single dose and multi dose vials, ampoules, bags, bottles of IV fluids.

SINGLE DOSE VIALS:

These use for a single patient for a single case or single procedure or single injection.

MULTI DOSE VIALS:

These vials contain more than one dose of medications.

MEDICATION STORAGE:

Store all medications as per manufacturer's instructions, some medication have to maintain at room temperature and some medicine need to keep in refrigerator e.g. for maintaining temperature, shelf life. Monitor temperature atleast twice daily and ensure alternate storage method is in place in the event of power or refrigerator failure.

Multi dose vials are stored in the medication room and in the immediate patient treatment area e.g. exam room, chemotherapy suite.

MEDICATION PREPARATION:

follow an aseptic technique to access parenteral medications

Perform hand hygiene before handling medications
Disinfect the rubber septum with alcohol and allow the alcohol to dry prior to piercing
Always use a new sterile syringe and sterile needle to draw up medication, be careful to avoid contact with the non sterile environment during the process.
Never leave the needle inserted into the septum of medication vial for multiple draws.
Ensure that any device inserted into the septum.

WHEN TO DISCARD MEDICATIONS:

Medications always be discarded according to the manufacturer expiry date even if not opened and whenever sterility not maintained or in doutfull situation.
Single dose vials that have been opened or needle puncture, that vial should be discarded. It should not be stored for future use.
Multi dose vials that have been opened or needle punctured that vial should be dated and discard within 28 days.

When to use PPE:

It should be wear before exposure to Blood or body fluids.

Where to remove PPE:

It should be remove at the doorway of patient's room before leaving.
Before removing PPE ensure that hand hygiene facilities are available at that site where we are removing PPE for e.g. Sink/ alcohol based hand rub.

TYPES OF PPE:

Gloves
Gowns or aprons
Masks
Goggles
Face shields for protection of face, mouth, nose, eyes

GLOVES:

Wear gloves for protection of hands. If there is contact with blood, body fluids, mucous membranes, Non-intact skin, contaminated equipments.

Wear gloves that should be fit appropriately to hands use according hands size. Never use same pair of gloves for care of another patients. Don't wash gloves for reuse immediately discard gloves according to Bio-Medical waste management protocol. Follow hand hygiene technique before and after removing gloves.

GOWN:

Wear gowns for protection of skin and our clothes. It should be wear before contact with blood and body fluids and before entering isolated patient room.

Never use the same gown to care for more than one patient. Remove gown and do hand hygiene before leaving the patient's room.

Wearing Gown:

Select the appropriate size and opening the at back and secure at neck and waist then tie.

Removing Gown:

Untie then remove gown turn contaminated outside towards the inside, fold or roll into a bundle then discard it by using Bio-Medical waste management protocol.

FACE MASK:

Wear mask for protection of mouth and nose. May be it used in combination with goggles or face shield to protection of mouth, nose and eyes. Use masks N95 or higher respirators for potential exposure to infectious agents transmitted via airborne route.

Wearing Mask:

Place over nose, mouth and chin. Fit flexible nose piece over nose bridge and secure on head with ties or elastic.

Removing Mask:

Untie the tie, remove from face then discard.

GOGGLES & FACE SHIELD:

It wear for protection of eyes, nose, mouth and face. It should cover forehead, extend below chin and wrap around side of face.

HAND HYGIENE:

The most common way(mode) of transmission of organisms are through the hands. So hand hygiene is most important for prevention and control of infection and reduce the spread of an health care associated infections.

Technique of Hand Hygiene:

Step-1: Rub palms together

Step-2: Rub back of both hands

Step-3: Interface fingers and rub the hands together

Step-4: Interlock fingers and rub the back of fingers of both hands

Step-5: Rub thumb in a rotating manner followed by the area between index finger and thumb

Step-6: Rub fingertips on palm of both Hands

Step-7: Rub both wrists in a rotating manner rinse and dry thoroughly.

Five moments of hand hygiene:

Before touching the patient
Before any aseptic procedure

Hospital acquired infections also known as Health care associated infections or Nosocomial infections. It is an infection which is not present or incubating at the time of patient admission and develops after admission to the hospital.

An infection is considered an hospital acquired infection if all the elements of a site specific infection criteria were not present during the admission time, but it present on or after the third calender day of hospital admission.
