Ashwin Talwadi - An Honest Employee of Infibeam

An honest man is made of great morals. He is honest not because he never got any opportunity to cheat but he believes that honesty is the best policy. Such a man not only does good to other people but creates a belief of God in others.

There are many who with ample amount of money show dishonesty and at the same time there are people who with little money yet they never abandon honesty. We have one such story of Ashish Talwadi, an Infibeam employee who lives on daily wages and manages to make approximately Rs 13,000 in a month. However he displayed immense honesty when he returned Rs 74,000 that he had mistakenly got from a customer, who paid extra over the bill amount. This amount would have made a great difference in his life as could have afforded a better treatment for his two-year old daughter.

Ashwin is a driver with Infibeam Logistics delivering orders of Fortune Online. On one of his delivery errand he delivered two 25 kg rice bags and five tin cans of sunflower oil to a customer in Paldi. “The amount of the bill to be charged was Rs 12,184. But the customer was busy on a call discussing her daughters’s health. She handed over the bill amount to me and at the same time I got a call from my wife and she asked me to rush to Sola Civil Hospital to see our daughter who suddenly fell ill. I quickly collected the bill amount and rushed to do three more deliveries,” described Ashwin.

After completing the deliveries when Ashwin returned home and heard from his sister that his daughter was in better condition and was sleeping he felt relaxed. Like everyday, Ashwin handed over the amount to his dad with all the bills of the day to count. But surprisingly his dad after counting the amount said that the bag has additional Rs 74,000. Both father and son separately counted the money and made sure there was no mistake. Ashwin recalling the whole incident realised that instead of bundles of Rs 10 and Rs 20, the customer had given him five bundles of 100 and six bundles of 50.

Ashwin immediately called up his operations manager and informed him of the situation. After getting instructions from his manger he brought the excess money to his Satellite office. Meanwhile they also contacted the customer asking if she was aware of the excessive payment she made on the bill. The customer had no idea about her mistake. Both Ashwin and the manager went to her house and returned the extra money. The customer didn’t reveal her identity but thanked Ashwin and Infibeam for their honest gesture and added that it is hard to find such kind of people in today's time.

1. Kindly tell your fans about yourself and your book in slight detail.

Yogesh Chabria: As a young boy, we couldn’t even afford taking the auto rickshaw and that’s one of the reasons I started selling toys when I was 5 years old. Since then I have faced lots of challenges, been depressed and lonely, but all that changed once I decided to take action and control of my life.

2. You have achieved immense success at such a young age. What has been your inspiration through this journey?

Yogesh Chabria: Of course, the first one is the Gita. Biographies of people Steve Jobs and Mahatma Gandhi has also impacted my life a lot. I have learnt the power of sales, marketing and having belief in one’s own ideas. I also realized that is important to give back to people around you, when you give back you attract a lot more!

7. By your personal standards how would you define and measure success?

Yogesh Chabria: If you are happy doing what you are doing at every level – personal, mental, emotional, physical, financial and spiritual – then I believe you are successful. If you have complete peace of mind and have overcome doubt, lack of confidence and fear, than I believe you are successful. Each one of us has to be true to our own definition of success.

8. And the last question that all your fans eagerly wish to know what can they expect in the future (perhaps another mind blowing masterpiece)?

Yogesh Chabria: Succeed The Happionaire Way is a book which I believe will have the maximum impact. I would want it to bring real change in the lives of even more people. With a seminar, we can reach maybe 5000 or 10,000 (when we do it in large stadiums) people at a time, but with this book, I want millions of more people to benefit from The Happionaire Way. I want them to know the biggest masterpiece in the world is their own life and all they need to do is take action.

1. Kindly tell your fans more about your book and yourself in slight depth.

Mr. Kalpesh Ashar:I have been in the field of Financial services since the past 12 years. I am a Certified Financial Planner and a SEBI Registered Investment Advisor ( RIA ) operating from Mumbai.

This is my debut in the field of writing a book. Being a first time author ' Yours Financially ' is my genuine attempt to portray the crucial aspects of personal finance and various aspects of life in an interesting and unique way.Thus far, there have been hundreds of books written efficiently in the field of Personal Finance. I have attempted to break the mould by writing this book as a fiction with a cinematic touch thus making it a compelling read.

The language used is simple and without any jargons.

2. You have many accolades in the field of finance like your CFP Certification. What motivated you to pursue a career in finance?

Mr. Kalpesh Ashar : As mentioned above, prior to being in the financial services field in Mumbai, I was based in Oman for 11 years and gained experience in the field of Corporate finance and Human resources. I returned to India, with the sole intention of pursuing entrepreneurship in the field of finance. I made my foray as a Mutual Fund Advisor and Distributor in 2005.Since then I have always made an endeavor to move in a space which lets me be as close to my clients and have better interaction with them on a professional basis.

I discovered the fantastic CFP module as the right medium to tread this path as it would put me in the space where I would be able to advise my clients on a holistic basis. Later in 2014 I took up the fee based financial advisory model by registering with SEBI as a RIA. Today this model allows me to interact comprehensively with my clients and address their requirements effectively.

3. What was your inspiration behind the book?

Mr. Kalpesh Ashar :There were basically two factors which inspired me to write this book. The first factor is FINANCIAL AWARENESS ( or rather - lack of it ) which I have noticed is a very crucial factor and is amiss in a majority of individuals. There is a huge need for creating this awareness as the financial world is getting complex by the day with new concepts and products surrounding us. This leaves the normal person clueless and baffled to make the right choice.

The second factor is the BEHAVIORAL aspect of individuals towards their finances and life in general. Varied reactions by individuals to similar situations makes a world of difference to the ultimate outcome.This is an amazing aspect...

Both these points put together inspired me enough to pen out my feelings or should I say - vent out my feelings ...

4. Did you face any challenges during the time you were writing?

Mr. Kalpesh Ashar :To be honest, as I was clear about the broad theme and flow of the story from the very beginning, I did not have a major challenge.

Except at one crucial juncture where I was at a loss of idea for carrying forward the mode of story, it was my son Aryan who just dropped in a super suggestion which made life easy for me...

5. Your book features an underlying Bollywood current in the story and even in the cover image of the book. Would you consider yourself a Bollywood aficionado?

Mr. Kalpesh Ashar :Yes, I am very much an avid cinema lover since my childhood. I simply love watching movies and the medium just thrills me as it is the best form of expression of a creative mind. An amazing script and screenplay are the main criterion to keep me hooked on to a movie.Storytelling is the best way to put your point across and I have used this medium to convey my thoughts through this book.

6.There have been many new changes recently in the financial sector of our nation like Demonetization and GST implementation. Can you offer your views on the same?

Mr. Kalpesh Ashar :I am completely in favor of these two game and nation changing moves initiated by our respectable Prime Minister in the long term interest of our nation. He is the first ever leader who has taken the mantle of fighting menace of black money and corruption head on. It is obviously the right step in the right direction.

7. Your Book explains the concepts of personal finances in a very innovative fashion involving two captivating couples. Do you have any advice for the youth of the nation with regards to managing finances or otherwise?

Mr. Kalpesh Ashar:Yes, the two couples in my book are young couples who begin their life journey and encounter similar situations but it is their respective AWARENESS, ACCEPTANCE and ACTION which decides their outcomes. These are three 3 thoughts which the youth of today should imbibe in their life.

Dr. Mukesh Jindal- The suggestion would be different for different people depending upon their age, income levels, savings rate, risk taking capacity, future requirements and the kind of life they would like to have for themselves. In general, the safest way for a beginner is to choose a few of the mutual fund schemes – equity or debt or a combination of both, based on the above aspects. The investment mode may be by SIP method, if there is a regular stream of income. Investments made when markets decline are considered to yield superior returns. Long term investments smoothen the impact of short term volatility in the equity market.

5. For youngsters those who have started earning, what kind of financial advice you will have for them?

Dr. Mukesh Jindal- The youngsters have a great future ahead. The basic principle of investment is ‘the early the better’. You start investing from today and not tomorrow, because that ‘tomorrow’ will never come. If a young earner, no matter what his income levels are, saves 25% of his income and starts investing in a regular way, he will be benefitted by the power of compounding and will have huge sums amassed in future. He can plan his entire life for all the future contingencies very comfortably.

1.Can you tell us more about your book THARKI ?

Kunal Marathe: THARKI is a book without any particular genre. It’s basically about love, but it cannot be said to be a love story. It is more about the other side of love that is not usually portrayed in movies or books. While we, especially in India, have grown up watching those movies and reading those books where people are ready to die for love—the true picture is totally different, at least for most of us. THARKI would keep that dark picture in front of you.

The story of THARKI revolves around a man who has that heavenly picture of love in his mind. He considers love to be eternal. He believes in ONE WOMAN WHOLE LIFE theory. But when the reality hits him hard, he literally goes insane.

2. Why the title THARKI?

Kunal Marathe:THARKI, which actually means a ‘womanizer’ in Hindi, was the only word that was on my mind while writing this story. This is the first book of a series, and after you are done reading the last page of the novel, you will wonder—why this book is titled THARKI, because the protagonist is totally opposite to a womanizer! And as expected, many readers asked me the same question.

This, however, would be answered in the second part that is scheduled to release in 2018.

3. According to your book’s tagline, ‘In the game of love you either play or get played’, do you believe in this statement yourself?

Kunal Marathe: It’s a tough question. Frankly speaking, I don’t have an answer.

I guess LOVE is a strange phenomenon, and when it comes about ‘the game of love’, nothing is certain. We see people playing in love. We see people being played in love. But then, we also see couples—the lucky ones—who are madly in love with each other till the very end.

4. What inspires you to keep going every day? And, what is next for Kunal Marathe?

Kunal Marathe:I have a strange life—crazy, uncertain, unsettled and unpredictable. I have taken huge risks for my dream to be an author, risks that often backfired. The only thing that inspired me to keep going is my dream. I know what I want. And I work on it, putting everything at stake. Nothing matters more than my dream to me.

Next is a web series on THARKI. We are in talks with many producers and filmmakers for the same. Also, I am working on the second installment of the THARKI Series.

5. At the age of 27, you have achieved a lot. Tell us about your journey in brief.

Kunal Marathe:To be honest, I have not achieved anything significant yet. In fact, I lost everything I had when I faced a major loss in publishing business few years ago. The loss was so big that I had to sell everything—from my MacBook to my gold, and ultimately, my car—the money from which I am using for the promotion of THARKI.

I started my career as a waiter in Mumbai. Of course, years after that, I made a business, a small reputation for myself, a world record, and now this book.

1. Can you let us know something more about your book - “50 Cups of Coffee”?

Khushnuma Daruwala: ‘50 Cups of Coffee’ happened purely by accident. It started over a conversation with one of my friends who was narrating her arranged-dating experiences. Tickled pink, I offered to write them and she agreed. Luckily I was on a sabbatical which gave me some head space to get the initial chapters and style, going.

This book is not a typical linear narrative and it’s definitely not a mush-fest. It’s simply a compilation of myriad experiences, musings, a few tricks, a few tips, a few flops and misgiving galore along the path to finding a man, all strung together with humour. Each chapter pertains to one facet of arranged-dating and ends with what we coined as a ‘java jolt’ – a witty musing which ties it all up.

2. What kind of experiences guided/helped you in writing- “50 Cups of Coffee”?

Khushnuma Daruwala: Apart from my friend who inspired the book and who I’ve retained as the protagonist I spoke to other women as well to get a better understanding of arranged-dating and their experiences. Discussing ideas on the book format and topics for the content really helped, as did reading books and articles on writing which another friend would regularly recommend.

On days I suffered from a writer's block I sought solace in my two funny-favourites – James Herriot and Gerald Durrell, for amusement and hopefully inspiration.

3. Your book is about the epiphanies with finding that right person (which we prefer calling ‘Mr/Ms. Perfect’). According to you, what role does movies and books play in shaping our perspective and desires about that ‘Perfect’ person?

Khushnuma Daruwala: I think our concept of Mr/ Ms Right or romance is a tad warped due to various influences – books, movies, stories among others.

First come the fairy tales with their damsels in distress who need rescuing. Then comes ‘romance’ literature and movies which can often kill you with their deadly clichés – e.g. the Byronic hero (Brooding, intense and often unavailable men who might eventually soften in the presence their lady love) or the manic Pixie Dream Girl (Quirky, full of life, childlike playfulness and crazy antics which she will focus on the soulful, brooding hero until he learns to live freely and love madly again*). If you look closely some of the biggest romantic blockbusters are hinged on these two cliches.

4. If you are given an opportunity to add or edit a chapter to your book - 50 Cups of Coffee, what will it be?

Khushnuma Daruwala: Nothing to be honest. I ended the book when I ran out of topics to write. As for editing, well I did tone down a few things slightly to ensure no sensibilities were offended in my writing process. If I was writing only for myself I wouldn’t have done that.

5. What inspires you to keep going everyday? And, What is next for Ms. Khushnuma - the author? OR a new role?

Khushnuma Daruwala: Any creative process, be it writing a book or a paper or ideating on solutions for a brand, is what keeps me going. The fluidity and the absence of an absolute certainty is exciting.

Yes, I do have a few ideas for the next book. Most authors seem to build their forte in one genre, while all my ideas are completely disparate, targeting different audiences altogether. I think I need to flesh each one out a bit to see which holds up under scrutiny and has a distinctive point of view in that genre.

Who knows, it might simply be a sequel to ‘50 Cups of Coffee’.

The company plans to provide a wide range of services, including customized facilities, to educational institutions under this venture. It will be powered by DRC Systems, a provider of enterprise resource planning technology that Infibeam acquired this month.

“With India getting digitalized, education would be one of the primary sectors where digitalisation will speed up.Thus, (there exists) a huge potential to tap the burgeoning education sector during this transition phase,“ said managing director Vishal Mehta. “We will be a single vendor for educational institutions, providing them everything under one roof.“

Many educational institutions that are digitising their operations approach multiple merchants in the absence of a single vendor to cater to all their requirements, which makes digitising expensive for them, said Mehta.

By addressing this gap, Mehta expects, Infibeam will be able to tap into the ever-growing needs of parents and students. “Parents spend on their children irrespective of the economic condition as it is need-based consumption for their children's future,“ he said.

The global e-learning or education-technology market is about $100 billion, according to Infibeam's due-diligence report. India's e-learning market is a fraction of that, at $1billion, but is estimated to be increasing at an annual growth rate of about 20%, according to the report.

The education venture represents the next stage of growth for Infibeam Incorporation, the parent of online marketplace Infibeam and e-commerce enabler BuildaBazaar. The company's strategy for this phase is to focus on potential repeat customers, or need-based customers, such as students and their parents, said Mehta.

1. How did you come up with the idea of integrating the learnings of Sant Kabir and Rahim with that of today's financial era and compiling a book on it? Can you give us a brief example of preachings of the couplets by 'Sant Kabir and Rahim' in context to the financial market?

Vinayak Sapre: The idea of sant Kabir and Rahim came into my mind after seeing so many presentations, in which we have quoted the whole industry solely with the foreign experts. And somewhere I have realized, that the Indian investors and advisors find it very difficult to associate themselves with these foreign experts. This forced me to think that if there are so many skilled pundits in India, there has to be some kind of preaching by them which can be used in and is relevant to today's financial market, which can be easily apprehended by common people. In context to this, the two names that I found most suitable are Kabir and Rahim. Because, they are both non-controversial and respect each other's religion, in fact, Kabir never believed in religion. Also, both of them are equally loved among Hindus as well as Muslims.

Talking about the examples of preaching by Kabir and Rahim. There is one couplet of Kabir:

“Mod moday hari mile, harkoi lev modaye

Baar baar ke mod se, bhed na vaikunth jaye.”

It talks about the herd mentality in the market. Kabir says that if you could have secured your place in heaven by sacrificing your hair, then sheep would have been the first to dwell in heaven. Similarly, when you are making an investment, you are not suppose to imitate your friends or neighbours. You should invest as per your goal and need.

2. Having completed your Masters with the specialization in Sales and Marketing department, what motivated you to take a shift in the Finance sector?

Vinayak Sapre: Well, it just happened by accident, as I was into some other job. And because of a friend, who was doing well in financial industry and also wanted me to join in. Due to some mishap, I lost my job. After which he got me into Kothari Pioneer mutual fund. And that's how, I came into mutual fund and since then I have been enjoying the life.

3. Our finance minister, Arun Jaitley, claims that the Budget 2017-18 has been prepared with regards to promote higher investments. What are your views regarding the same?

Vinayak Sapre: Well, Budget definitely looks promising but instead of commenting on the budget, I would suggest that people should look at their own household budget. We need to have a ballpark figure when we are preparing our budget. We need to focus on our own incomes, expenses and expenses. Reason being, there is a vast difference between our budget and Union budget.

4. What is the biggest challenge that you face while explaining the basics of investing sutras to the novice investors? Also, according to you, what is the problem with majority of the investors in our country. Is it the lack of information or the greed to obtain higher returns without patience?

Vinayak Sapre: What has happened in our society specially in the last 20-25 years post liberalisation of economy is that the spending pattern of the society has changed a lot. Be it in smaller towns or in bigger places like Mumbai, Delhi or any other metro cities, things are available very easily on EMI and credit cards. People are not aware about the important aspect, force retirement, which is happening in private sector. Due to which people will have much longer post-retirement life. There is an additional expense called Lifestyle expense, which was not there probably 20-30 year back in the life of our parents. And despite of the dramatic increase in the lifestyle expense, people are actually ignoring it.

Not only the greed but lack of information leads to the greed. People who come to invest generally come with the idea, that they want to make a lot of money in quick time. This according to me is basically due to lack of financial literacy. And I always make sure to educate my clients first and then proceed further with the investment plans.

5. What is the one advice that you always give to your clients without failing, may it be a nascent investor or a professional one?

Vinayak Sapre: I think the mantra of the successful investing is truly explained by the Kabir's saying,

“Dheere dheere rehmana, Dheere sab kuch hoy,

Maali soche sau ghada, Ritu aaye fal hoye.”

It states that one needs to be very disciplined and patient while investing. And if you are looking at goal-oriented investing, it only makes sense to remain disciplined and have lot of patience as an investor.

What drives the flight of Infibeam? Find out!

India’s e-commerce story is a familiar one—cash burn, negative unit economics and a pipe dream called profitability, all in the name of customer acquisition. But Ahmedabad-based Infibeam Incorporation Ltd, the country’s first online retailer to go public, has scripted a growth story that flies in the face of the prodigal ways of other, heavily-funded e-commerce players.

It not only continues to be profitable quarter-on-quarter, but also believes that expanding margins, particularly from its business-to-business (B2B) enterprise platform, will help it sustain the growth momentum. However, if you thought the B2B strategy was all there was to the Infibeam story, you have another think coming. The company is treading a carefully-charted growth path, winning projects, striking new collaborations with government and private partners alike, and stitching value-accretive deals.

CCAvenue: Gateway to growth

Earlier this month, Infibeam entered into a pact to merge CCAvenue with itself in a deal that is expected to value the payment gateway firm at Rs 2,000 crore ($298 million then). The e-commerce company, which already owns 3.85% in Avenues India Pvt. Ltd-run CCAvenue through subsidiary NSI Infinium Global, will acquire another 7.5% stake in it by investing Rs 150 crore, according to stock exchange filings.

Experts feel CCAvenue will be heavily accretive to Infibeam, which also reflects in the company’s stock price rise and the subsequent hike in its market cap. On February 28, the company had a market capitalisation of Rs 7,419 crore compared with Rs 5,035 crore on November 16, 2016.

CCAvenue, one of the largest payment aggregators in India, provides a platform to over a lakh merchants to collect payments online. It also has tie-ups with close to 50 banks. CCAvenue also intends to engage with Bharat Bill Payment Systems (BBPS), which will let it offer payment facilities for utilities and other services in the Indian market.

Mayank Babla, research analyst at KRChoksey Shares and Securities Pvt. Ltd, says CCAvenue’s merger is expected to add incremental revenues of Rs 200 crore to the top line and Rs 40-50 crore to net profit following the amalgamation. In a research note earlier this month, Babla said he expected the CCAvenue merger to boost revenue growth, since the payment aggregator has grown at a CAGR of 45-50% per annum between FY14 and FY16.

“[The] merger with CCAvenue will not only add ‘transaction fees’ charged by payment aggregators for B2B and B2C services, but also the potential revenues from Bharat Bill Payment Systems or BBPS operations. We believe that launch of BBPS is a huge trigger for CCAvenue’ revenue growth as the government of India plans to shift 70% of Rs 6,22,300 crore in utilities payments to the online payment system,” Babla said, who has an ‘accumulate’ rating on the stock and a target price of Rs 1,461.

On Tuesday, Infibeam’s shares were trading at Rs 1398.95, down 0.16%, on the BSE in afternoon trade. The stock has more than tripled since its listing in April 2016. It had ended at Rs 445.55 on the listing day, up about 3% from the issue price of Rs 432.

Clients & collaborations

Infibeam is fast acquiring clients both domestically and globally. In December, it agreed to provide online e-commerce platform services, including advanced machine-learning algorithms for enabling automated products classification, to Sears Holdings Management Corp, an American firm that owns retail store brands like Sears and Kmart, among others.

Infibeam will also provide the government of Sikkim a unique and verified digital identity platform with authorised and secured digital wallets for people. The company will also develop a dedicated tourism portal for the state.

The company has also entered into an MoU with IL&FS Township & Urban Assets Ltd for implementing projects in the digital and e-commerce space for the central government, state governments and private partners. It will set up a special purpose vehicle (SPV) in Gandhinagar to provide its technology and office premises for expanding and implementing digital projects.

The SPV will offer a revenue opportunity of Rs 1,250 crore over a period of five years, starting FY17, Infibeam’s founder and chief executive Vishal Mehta told News Corp VCCircle.

“We are getting into global markets, we have the appetite to work with the government and we have signed clients in the Middle East and the US. All this will show positive results from the next two quarters,” he added.

Service revenue, profits on upswing

Infibeam categorises income from the B2B business under service revenue, which is on an upswing. For the quarter ended December 2016, it grew 49% to Rs 40.2 crore, compared with Rs 27 crore a year ago.

“We are investing in last-mile logistics. There is demand for supply. Service revenues used to be 15% of the overall revenue earlier, but now they are 40%. It’s a high-EBITDA margin business. As our service revenues goes up, profit also goes up with it,” Mehta said.

For the third quarter of FY17, Infibeam’s total revenue grew 14% to Rs 102.7 crore, compared with Rs 90.1 crore in the same period a year ago. EBITDA grew 348% to Rs 21.2 crore, compared with Rs 4.7 crore a year ago while profit after tax rose a whopping 2,411% to Rs 12.8 crore compared to Rs 50 lakh in Q3FY16.

Revenue from the e-commerce vertical slipped 1% to Rs 62.5 crore during the quarter, and the company attributed it to the “withdrawal of cash on delivery services”, saying business has picked up since then.

Mehta said the growth witnessed in the service business segment will continue on the back of new alliances. “In e-commerce, there are three potential obstacles: building capacity, supply and demand, and we solve all of them. We are a one-stop solution provider in the e-commerce segment offering purchases to payments solutions under one roof, and that puts us in a strong position,” he said, referring to Infibeam’s unique business model.

Unlike other e-commerce firms that focus mainly on business-to-consumer (B2C) offerings, Infibeam is heavily focused on B2B. Apart from its flagship marketplace portal infibeam.com, the company has an enterprise platform called BuildaBazaar.com, which is growing sustainably quarter on quarter. BuildaBazaar.com provides small, medium and large merchants a commerce platform to help them start online stores under their own domain names. The cloud-based, do-it-yourself platform integrates operation support services like payment gateway, logistics, order management, marketing and search engine optimisation and catalogue management, among others.

Merchants, including SMEs and MSMEs, are increasingly going online and that’s helping the firm. The number of merchants on Infibeam’s BuildaBazaar platform rose to over 66,000 in the quarter ended December 2016, up 36% from the previous year.
