Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass is one of the works at the foundations of American poetry. Its expansive attempt to capture the spirit and landscape of the 19th century United States has influenced an entire culture’s self-concept, and its rich language continues to inspire readers today as it has for the century and a half of its existence.

“By Whitman, Biweekly” will provide an opportunity to look closely at this beloved work. Each time we’ll spend an hour discussing its context and examining the poetry of the 1855 first edition. The series will also give those who love Leaves of Grass, and those who would like to learn more, an opportunity to explore Whitman’s vigorous and heartfelt poetry together.

The book takes place in Second Life where the main character’s avatar is being threatened and avatars are being murdered – in both Second Life and in real life. It’s a thriller that shows us some of the interesting sides of Second Life that we don’t usually see over here in the Info Islands and the library-related sims. Peter set up a detective agency, the Flick Faulds Detective Agency, while researching this book.

Peter May is the award-winning author of several standalone novels and two series:
The China Thrillers, featuring Beijing detective Li Yan and American forensic pathologist Margaret Campbell; and The Enzo Files, featuring Scottish forensic scientist Enzo MacLeod, which is set in France. He is the creator of three major television drama series and garnered more than 1000 credits in 15 years as scriptwriter and script editor on prime-time British television drama, before quitting television to concentrate on his first love, writing novels. Born and raised in Scotland he now lives in France.
WEST OF IRELAND LIBRARY
Jules Verne’s “Around the World in 90 Days” with Onyx Plutonian
Wednesday, 27 January 2010
7:00 PM to 8:00 PM SLT
Where: West of Ireland Library and Cultural Center
http://slurl.com/secondlife/West%20of%20Ireland/44/157/29

Jules Verne’s career as a novelist began in 1863, when he struck a new vein in fiction—stories that combined popular science and exploration. In Around the World in Eighty Days, Phileas Fogg rashly bets his companions £20,000 that he can travel around the entire globe in just eighty days—and he is determined not to lose. Breaking the well-established routine of his daily life, the reserved Englishman immediately sets off for Dover, accompanied by his hot- blooded French manservant, Passepartout. Traveling by train, steamship, sailboat, sledge, and even elephant, they must overcome storms, kidnappings, natural disasters, Sioux attacks, and the dogged Inspector Fix of Scotland Yard to win the extraordinary wager. Combining exploration, adventure, and a thrilling race against time, Around the World in Eighty Days gripped audiences upon its publication and remains hugely popular to this day. Part 1 tonight, read in voice.

—————————————–
WEST OF IRELAND LIBRARY
Shandon Loring with “The Canterville Ghost”
Where: West of Ireland Library and Cultural Center
http://slurl.com/secondlife/West%20of%20Ireland/44/157/29

“The Canterville Ghost” by Oscar Wilde is a parody featuring a dramatic spirit named Sir Simon and an American ambassador named Mr. Hiram B. Otis. When Mr. Otis learns his castle is haunted he succeeds in victimizing the ghost and disregarding age-old British traditions. An amusing twist on a traditional gothic horror tale. Story read in voice.

Shandon Loring with Beowulf
Sunday, 31 January 2010
1:00 PM – 2:30 PM SLT
Fruit Islands – Slurl will be sent with notices

ONCE upon a time, in the far north of what is now called Europe, there was a kingdom known as Geatsland. It was a harsh country, with high mountains and narrow valleys, and a long seacoast with many harbors and inlets, and the men who lived there were famous for their bravery, on both sea and land. They were tall like the trees of their forests, and each man had the strength of ten. There were foes, too, to be dealt with. The great caves along the coast were inhabited by all manner of evil monsters that lived partly in the sea and partly upon the land, huge serpents with scales of brass

In the Old English epic poem Beowulf, a hero of the Geats, battles three antagonists: Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and later, after Beowulf has become king, a final battle with an unnamed dragon.
Join us for a very special and exciting presentation of Beowulf presented in Live Voice by Shandon Loring. If you have not experienced Beowulf before, it is time you did. If you have, it was not like this. You don’t dare miss this one!

Grendel’s coming, Grendel comes… And you can’t run!

—————————————–

Sunday’s Golden Globe Award named AVATAR as the Best Drama of the
Year . So it’s a lot more than just a well-done animated film.

Date : Sunday, January 24th at 1 pm on our Sky Platform where we can
use Voice.

Director James Cameron wrote an 80-page script in 1994, but “…had to
wait for technology to catch up with his vision for the film…”.

Paul Frommer assisted in the filming. Entirely new technologies were
used to turn human actors into onscreen avatars. More than a thousand
people worked on the production of this film.

The film is an action-adventure, journey of self-discovery, has
elements of Hindu concepts, the selflessness that love inspires, and
what we’d like to think we humans can be.

When we humans reach outer space, will we treat Indigenous Peoples
better than we have here on Earth?

In the year 2154, humans must answer that question in the face of
extraordinary technologies .

Buried Riches – Captain Kidd is the most ubiquitous gentleman in history. His earnings in the gentle craft of piracy were frugally husbanded by him, and he has reportedly left numerous pots of money in holes in the ground all along the eastern seaboard, from Coney Island to Key West. The belief in these large deposits of gold has caused reckless expenditure of actual wealth in attempts to recover doubloons and guineas by those seeking to get something for nothing. Despite the hardships of the search and infrequent reward, interest in the subject is now and then revived by reports of the discovery—usually by a farmer ploughing near the shore—of an iron kettle with a handful of gold and silver coins in it. In sea superstitions the apparition of Captain Kidd’s boat is sometimes confused with that of the Flying Dutchman. Even ashore there are reports of the appearance of demons and headless men, and whispers of spirits guarding sea caves and heavy chests full of treasure. Tonight join us for stories of Captain Kidd and more pirate and treasure tales from the eastern U.S. Stories in voice.

A Collection of Irish Gaelic Folk Stories told in voice.
Gaelic folk-stories are, as a living form of literature, by this time pretty nearly a thing of the past. Happily though a large harvest has been reaped from that crop which grew so luxuriantly years ago. Until quite recently there existed in our midst millions of men and women who, when their day’s work was over, sought and found mental recreation in a domain to which few of us who read books are permitted to enter. Man, all the world over, when he is tired of the actualities of life, seeks to unbend his mind with the creations of fancy.

—————————————–

Exhibit Opening and Conversation with the Curator Using primary sources from the John M. Ward Collection at The Houghton Library, Harvard University, this exhibit, curated by Miss Leslie Weston, provides a glimpse into the social dance world of the 19th century. Waltzes, polkas, schottisches! Come see how it was really done. The 19th century was a period of immense change in the ballrooms of Europe and America.

Dance orchestras were no longer the prerogative of royal courts, and dance became a vital social pastime of all classes. Complicated choreographed group dances gave way to intimate couple dances, and asin Second Life, a good deal of courting activity moved into the social dance arena. The John M. Ward Collection of social dance provides a superior opportunity to view some of the many aspects of social dance during this period, from the dances themselves, to the instruction, choreography, venues, musicians, and music. If you have ever wondered about the reality of dance in Almack’s Assembly Rooms, Jane Austen, or Madame Bovary, this exhibit is for you.

Those little darlings. The heirs to your throne. Washed and in their jammies, your children are true blessings. You pause. Is that smoke you smell? You hear giggling and footsteps racing up to the nursery. Getting up from your easy chair you discover the little darlings have been playing with incendiaries again. Oh, the joys of parenthood! What was it like to be a Victorian child? What is it like to play a child in Babbage? Miss Saffia Widdershins, Miss Myrtil Igaly, and Master Jimmy Branagh will show us the reality of childhood as well as the challenges (and rewards) of role playing a child in the Streamlands. So, no matter if you are a parent or childfree, you (okay, most of you) were most certainly once a child. Join us on January 17 to relive those lost years.
The ancient Irish bards were trained in satire, which they used to maintain the standards of their society. A bardic satire could raise welts, and Irish writers ever since have been known for their skill in this genre. Tonight, bring your best satiric writing to share, and Aoife will have a few examples from the great satirists in her pocket. Stories in voice, but Aoife will read yours, if you cannot do voice.

In the winter of 1951, a storyteller, the last practitioner of an honored, centuries-old tradition, arrives at the home of the nine-year-old Ronan O’Mara in the Irish countryside. For three wonderful evenings, the old gentleman enthralls his assembled audience with narratives of foolish kings, fabled saints, and Ireland’s enduring accomplishments. These nights change young Ronan forever, setting him on a years-long pursuit of the elusive, itinerant storyteller and the glorious tales that are no less than the saga of his tenacious and extraordinary isle.
‘Ireland – a novel’ is the work from Frank Delaney, Shandon will share some portions of this marvelous novel with you in voice.
