Google Launches Interactive Book to About the Web

In an attempt to teach the average person about the fundamental of browsers and the web, Google has released an interactive online book that explains concepts like, TCP/IP, HTML, browser extensions and malware.

The short book, 20 Things I Learned About Browsers and the Web, is a step-by-step explanation of the web and how it works. It was created by the Google Chrome() team using HTML5, but it also features a lot of clever illustrations by award-winning German illustrator and children’s author Christoph Niemann.

The focus of the book is on 19 different topics (plus a recap, making for 20 things). It starts with “What Is the Internet()?” and then dives into cloud computing, web apps, web programming languages, browsers, privacy, security and open source.

While regular readers of Mashable() may be very familiar with these web concepts (and much more), Google() realizes that most people have no clue about the function of a browser or what HTML5 actually is. This was exemplified last year when Google took to the streets and asked people, “what is a browser?” Less than 8% of the people it polled gave a correct answer.

With 20 Things I Learned About Browsers and the Web (available at 20thingsIlearned.com), Google can point these users to a website that will fill them in on the basics. While it’s not a perfect solution (we suspect the book’s too long for many in our attention-deficient society), it’s definitely something I’d show to my mom or my technologically-challenged friends.

Google Adsense reveals how much advertising money it shares to publishers

After years of keeping mum on the Adsense revenue share, Google finally broke its silence and announced via an official blog post how much advertising money it shares to publishers.

On the Inside Adsense blog, Google disclosed that:

For Adsense for Content (the usual contextual ads you see on most blogs), the revenue share of webmasters is 68%. This means for every $100 that advertisers pay to Google, $68 goes to the publisher while Google retains the remaining $32.
For Adsense for Search (ads appearing on Google search results posted on one’s site), the revenue split is 51%-49%, slightly in favor of publishers. This means publishers get $51 for every $100 advertisers pay on Adsense for Search.

What does this mean to us bloggers and site publishers?

For one, it’s a welcome disclosure from Google. Now, we have an idea how much exactly we get and how much Google gets from every advertising money.

Two, this gives us an idea how much we can charge our own advertisers. Let’s say a banner ad unit on your blog earns you $50 a month from Adsense. Based on the Adsense revenue share, a Google Adwords advertiser targeting that banner ad actually pays Google $73.53. Your share in that is $50 (68%), while Google keeps $23.53 (32%).

Now, if a direct advertiser wants to get that banner ad exclusively, you can say that it costs $73.53 — not $50 — to target the ad. You can better negotiate and leverage with potential advertisers since you have the figures.

Finally, as Google also explained in its blog post, choosing the ad network you want to participate in should not just be about the revenue share. More importantly, it should be about the nominal income. Another ad network may offer you 80% revenue share but if their cost to advertisers is lower than Google’s, you might still earn more from Adsense given only a 68% share.

Google explains:

For example, you would receive $68 with AdSense for content for $100 worth of advertising that appeared on your site. If another ad network offers an 80% revenue share, but is only able to collect $50 from ads served on your site, you would earn $40. In this case, a higher revenue share wouldn’t make up for the lower revenue yield of the other ad network.

Google’s correct: it should always be about the nominal income. Unfortunately, this disclosure of revenue split does not change our current situation: cost per click is dropping, hence, Adsense income is also dropping.

Pinoy Big Brother Double Up Housemates Revealed

Last night Octerber 4, we finally witnessed the first Magical Reveal in the opening of the Big Brother house for its 3rd season ( PBB Double Up ). The mystery of the term “double up” was revealed – two houses and two sets of twins! .

Princess Manzon was the first housemate who entered in Big Brother House she auditioned in Tokyo, Japan. Born and raised in Cebu, Princess left the Philippines when she was in highschool to live with her mom in Japan. There she discovered something about her mom which prompted her to live independently. Called the “Sassy Vamp of Cebu,” Princess is currently working as a receptionist and a language instructor.

Next to Princess was Tom Mott who is from the USA. The “Romantic Stud” is a native of Samar but migrated to the States when he was twelve years old with his mom and dad, who’s part of the US Navy. He spoke little English when he moved abroad and was ridiculed. Tom loves to draw and would love to pursue a career in Digital Animation.

Up next was Delio Dimaculangan, a cook from Batangas. Delio had to work at a young age and was not able to finish his studies. He got his boss’ daughter pregnant and he was not able to see his child. He was reunited with his wife and child two years after and now he is determined to give them a better life.

Paul Jake Castillo followed Delio inside the house. He is from Cebu like Princess, Paul was able to put up a business of his own at the age of twenty-two. However, the “Negotiante Prince” prides himself for being down-to-earth for he is able to get along with people from all walks of life.

Tough guy Jason Francisco of Mindoro was infamous in his hometown for starting brawls and other mischief, “Boy Astig” admits that he is not one to back out of a fight.

Next to Jason was Melisa Cantiveros, the funny lady from General Santos City. Nicknamed Inday Kengkay, Melisa remained strong and looks at the positive side of things despite people teasing her about her looks. The aspiring teacher hopes she can impart happiness to other people wherever she goes.

Multi-lingual Hottie Yuri Okawa can speak five languages – Spanish, Portuguese, English, Filipino and Nihonggo which she has learned living in different parts of the world. Her goal is to help support her family working as a waitress in Japan while on leave from her nursing studies.

Shy type Carolyn Batay followed Yuri inside Kuya’s house. The “Conservative Pharmacist,” was a native of Tondo in a traditional Chinese household. She admits that this has hindered her from exploring the world and hopefully with her stint with Big Brother this will change her perspective on some things.

A certified Davaoena, Marielle Sorino confessed that she had her rebellious stage in life, drinking and partying because of her conflict with her parents, specially her mom. A single mom, Marielle says she has moved out of her parents home and is trying her best to raise her son on her own.

Another mom, but this time a widow from Pampanga joined Marielle inside the house.

Yhel become a mother at 14 years old and lost her husband to a gang war at the age of 20. Yhel gets her inspiration to go on with life from her two children but admits it’s very hard to raise her kids since she hasn’t even finished high school.

And last but not the least Kuya reveals two sets of twins – college varsity basketball players

With this double up reveal, Kuya also divulges to the pairs that he has two houses. He then gives them the first task of the season, a switch of identities and houses at his signal, anytime within the week. Should any of them be discovered or the secret of the two houses revealed to the other housemates, the twins would automatically be forced evicted from the Kuya’s abode. Would the twins be able to pull the old switcheroo trick?

Miss Universe 2009 pageant was held at the Atlantis Paradise Island, in Nassau, Bahamas last August 23, 2009. Stefanía Fernández of Venezuela was crowned Miss Universe 2009 by outgoing titleholder Dayana Mendoza of Venezuela. There were 83 countries and territories competed for the title and the pageant was officially broadcasted live on NBC and Telemundo.

DOH confirms a SWINE FLU case in Philippines

The Department of Health (DOH) confirmed that the Philippines is now being affected by the a[N1H1] or SWNIE FLU virus. The country's second case of the new H1N1 flu strain in a 50-year-old woman who arrived in the country Wednesday from the United States.
Health Secretary Francisco Duque told a news conference that the Filipino woman, who was traveling alone, experienced "mild flu symptoms" a day after she arrived from Chicago.

"Her specimen tested positive for the influenza A (H1N1). She only has mild symptoms, which include fever and cough," Duque said.

He said efforts are underway to trace all who were in close contact with the woman, including the airline crew and the household members.

Duque said the woman, whom he declined to identify, is now confined in a private hospital.

On Thursday, Duque announced that a 10-year-old Filipino girl who arrived in the country from travels in the United States and Canada had caught the H1N1 virus, making her the first case in the Philippines.

He said the girl had confirmed positive for the H1N1 flu virus Wednesday, after complaining of fever, cough and sore throat Tuesday, a day after she arrived in the Philippines.

Duque said Sunday the girl "is now almost fully recovered with only a minor sore throat."

"She is completing her anti-viral medication and will be discharged as soon as a repeat H1N1 test is negative," he said.

Aside from the two confirmed cases, he said the Department of Health is also monitoring 10 new suspected cases. This brings to 105 the number of cases monitored since May 1, he said.

American Idol Season 8 Winner Declared

The long wait is over when Folksy singer Kris Allen is declared winner yesterday in "American Idol Season 8" turning judges' favorite Adam Lambert into an also-ran.

Host Ryan Seacrest said on Wednesday's finale that nearly 100 million votes were cast for the finalists. The 23-year-old Allen, a student from Conway, Arkansas, bested the 27-year-old Lambert, a theater actor from San Diego.

The two-hour finale included performances by the Black Eyed Peas, Cyndi Lauper, Carlos Santana and Rod Stewart. Lambert performed with Kiss and Allen dueted with Keith Urban.

Before the announcement, the two finalists dueted on "We are the Champions" with the surviving members of Queen.

Allen gets a record contract along with his "American Idol" title.

Team Pacquiao headed by Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao celebrated their victory party after his spectacular two-round demolition to the British fighter Ricky "Hitman" Hatton on Saturday.

Team Pacquiao members decided to hold the Mass in a function room at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. They said the new venue was an added precaution to prevent Pacquiao from contracting any illness, particularly the A ( H1N1 ) influenza virus.

Manny even sang a few songs with his band and songwriter Lito Camo.

Juday Ann Santos and Ryan Agoncillo got married this morning in the San JuanNepomuceno Church in San Juan, Batangas. Fr. Tito Caluag, who was an hour late, officiated the wedding rites. The Juday-Ryan wedding had a beach theme motif with all the attendees wearing white. Reception is now being held in Balai Laiya Resort also in Batangas. There will be a wedding reception on May 2 in Manila for the other guests and press who did not made it to the San Juan, Batangas Wedding. Rita Neri is the wedding coordinator of the Juday-Ryan Wedding. Megastar Sharon Cuneta, was the matron of honor while Ryan Agoncillo’s brother, Dondi, was best man. Agot Isidro sang the song “Runaway” while Regine Velasquez and Ogie Alcasid sang “The Prayer” during the offertory. Agot Isidro and Ogie Alcasid performed “One Hand, One Heart” during Communion.

The Juday-Ryan wedding’s principal sponsors were, Mon Isberto, Smart Communications spokesman; Bien Bautista, Ace photographer; Benjie Gonzales, Ryan’s uncle from the US; Susie Entrata-Abrera, TV Host; Rory Quintos, TV & Movie Director; and Jane Buencamino, Judy Ann’s road manager.

COMELEC invites hackers to hack their website, against P100M hack price

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) yesterday challenged hackers to try to hack into the voting and counting machines that will be used in next year’s elections, but expressed confidence that they would fail.

Comelec executive director Jose Tolentino said they are very confident the security features of the precinct count optical scan (PCOS) machines would be able to thwart hackers.

“Even in the first level, we can already detect any tampering,” noted Tolentino, who is also the project manager of poll automation.

To check the accuracy of the PCOS machines, the Comelec will hold a mock election among political parties and other interested sectors three days before the May 10, 2010 elections.

The official claimed that participants would be allowed to fill up sets of ballots and then feed them into the counting machines.

“After that, we’ll know if the machines are accurate… The parties will then sign a document to certify that the machines are accurate,” Tolentino added.

The Comelec announced yesterday that the terms of reference/request for proposals (TOR/RFP) could be purchased by prospective bidders for $20,000 or P1 million starting March 18, signaling the start of the bidding process.

The money to be raised from the sale of bidding documents will be set aside for the Comelec’s project management or election expenditures.

“The last day for them to buy the documents is March 25. And on March 27, we’ll be holding a pre-bid conference where bidders can raise their questions or concerns,” said Comelec chairman Jose Melo, adding that the poll body would open the bids on April 27 and “not later than May 21,” the lease contracts would be awarded to the winning bidders.

Comelec commissioner Nicodemo Ferrer said they expect the bidding procedures to go smoothly.

“The way our chairman and the commissioners are coordinating with technical people and the Advisory Council (on Poll Automation), I don’t think we’ll have any problem,” he noted.

Melo urged first-time voters to register, claiming that there are now some 44.2 million registered voters. The Comelec is eyeing some nine million new voters.

He said that registered voters should also verify their registration to avoid any delay during the election day.

According to Ferrer, they expect a bigger turnout of registrants and voters for the 2010 elections because the presidency is at stake.

Ferrer added the automation of the elections is also expected to draw interest in the coming elections because it would be the first time that this would be done on a nationwide scale.

“Out of curiosity, they will flock to voting areas to see the machines. And aside from that, there is usually high interest in presidential elections,” he maintained.

How to delete virus using command prompt or MS DOS

Deleting virus or viruses using command prompt is very simple. Just follow the correct format that you will going to use. First thing to do is open the MS - DOS command prompt by clicking the START select RUN and type CMD. After which, the DOS box will appear.

Steps to delete a virus:

1.) Type CD\ press enter

2.) Then go to the drive directory were you want to see if there are viruses present there by typing the drive path (ei: C: for c drive or the drive of your USB device).

3.) To change the directory inside the drive ( for example to see what is inside the suspected folder just type CD foldername and press enter.

4.) Type ATTRIB *.* and press enter if you see something folders with .exe extension or picture files with .exe extension or any files than are unnecessary in that drive that means it is a virus or that file(s) has been infected by a virus.

5.) To delete that virus change its attribute by typing
ATTRIB -S -H -R [virusname].[itsextension] ( ex: attrib -s -h -r virus.exe ) and press enter.

6.) Now the final thing is to type this command to delete the virus by typing DEL [virusname].[extension] ( ex: del virus.exe ).

Debts is a life's reality and we always think of the solution on how to get out of it. Well, what do you think maybe this article could help you. Start in these Debt elimination process.

Debt elimination involves three steps:

1. Stop acquiring new debt.
2. Establish an emergency fund.
3. Implement a debt snowball.

Here’s how to approach each step.

Stop acquiring new debt

This may seem self-evident, but the reason your debt is out of control is that you keep adding to it. Stop using credit. Don’t finance anything. Cut up your credit cards.

That last one can be tough. Don’t make excuses. I don’t care that other personal finance sites say that you shouldn’t cut them up. Destroy them. Stop rationalizing that you need them.

* You don’t need credit cards for a safety net.
* You don’t need credit cards for convenience.
* You don’t need credit cards for cash-back bonuses.

You don’t need credit cards at all. If you’re in debt, credit cards are a trap. They only put you deeper in debt. Later, when your debts are gone and your finances are under control, maybe then you can get a credit card. (I don’t carry a personal credit card. I don’t miss having one.)

After you destroy your cards, halt any recurring payments. If you have a gym membership, cancel it. If you automatically renew your World of Warcraft account, cancel it. Cancel anything that automatically charges your credit card. Stop using credit.

Once you’ve done this, call each credit card company in turn. Do not cancel your credit cards (except for those with a zero balance). Instead, ask for a better deal. Find an offer online and use it as a bargaining wedge. Your bank may not agree to match competing offers, but it probably will. It never hurts to ask.
Establish an emergency fund

(This step will probably take several months.)

For some, this is counter-intuitive. Why save before paying off debt? Because if you don’t save first, you’re not going to be able to cope with unexpected expenses. Do not tell yourself that you can keep a credit card for emergencies. Destroy your credit cards; save cash for emergencies.

How much should you save? Ideally, you’d save $1,000 to start. (College students may be able to get by with $500.) This money is for emergencies only. It is not for beer. It is not for shoes. It is not for a Playstation 3. It is to be used when your car dies, or when you break your arm in a touch football game.

Keep this money liquid, but not immediately accessible. Don’t tie your emergency fund to a debit card. Don’t sabotage your efforts by making it easy to spend the money on non-essentials. Consider opening a savings account at an online bank like ING or Emigrant. When an emergency arises, you can easily transfer the money to your regular checking account. It’ll be there when you need it, but you won’t be able to spend it spontaneously.
Implement a debt snowball

(This step may require several years.)

After you’ve stopped using credit, and after you’ve saved an emergency fund, then attack your existing debt. Attack it with vigor. Throw whatever you can at it.

Many people say to pay your high interest debts first. There’s no question that this makes the most sense mathematically. But if money were all about math, you wouldn’t have debt in the first place. Money is as much about emotion and psychology as it is about math.

There are at least two approaches to debt elimination. Psychologically, using a debt snowball offers big payoffs, payoffs that can spur you to further debt reduction. Here’s the short version:

1. Order your debts from lowest balance to highest balance.
2. Designate a certain amount of money to pay toward debts each month.
3. Pay the minimum payment on all debts except for the one with the lowest balance.
4. Throw every other penny at the debt with the lowest balance.
5. When that debt is gone, do not alter the monthly amount used to pay debts, but throw all you can at the debt with the next-lowest balance.

I’m a huge fan of the debt snowball. It still takes time to pay off your debts, but you can see results almost immediately.
Supplementary solutions

You can do other things to improve your money situation while you’re working on these three steps.

First, focus on the fundamental personal finance equation: to pay off debt, or to save money, or to accumulate wealth, you must spend less than you earn.

Curb your spending. Re-learn frugal habits. (Frugality is something with which most college students are all too familiar.) You can find some great ideas in the archives of this site. Also check Frugal for Life.

While you work to spend less, do what you can to increase your income. If possible, sell some of the stuff you bought when you got into debt. Get an extra job. (But don’t neglect your studies for the sake of earning more. Your studies are most important.)

Finally, go to your local public library and borrow Dave Ramsey’s The Total Money Makeover. Don’t be put off by the title — this is a fantastic guide to getting out of debt and developing good money habits. I rave about it often, but that’s because it has done so much to help my own personal finances. After you’ve finished, return it and borrow another book about money.

The most important thing is to start now. Don’t start tomorrow. Don’t start next week. Start tackling your debt now. Your older self will thank you.
