Studies found that a staggering two-thirds of those people who experience symptoms of urinary incontinence do not use any treatment or product to manage the condition. Oftentimes this is due to the general lack of knowledge about available options. Thanks to dependable home health care centers there are a wide range of hospital quality products and support that are easily accessible.

There are many different incontinence supplies available for every unique situation. Products are offered in four distinct styles with a wide variety of protection range, as well as overnight absorbency. The choice depends on the level of incontinence (INCT), desired comfort, convenience or one's mental and/or physical condition. Someone who is seated or lying down for most of the time will require a different type of protection than a person who is still fairly active. Using the right product will help reduce leakages, lower product consumption and increase overall comfort.

A discreet bladder control pad is specifically designed for mild to moderate absorbency. These can come either with or without plastic and are often individually wrapped. Pads are designed with adhesive strips that will secure them to the user’s regular underwear.

Protective underwear is designed to be worn in place of regular underwear. Often called "pull ups" as they pull up and down for ease of use. They are made with soft, breathable materials that promote security, comfort and dignity. Protective underwear is currently offered in gender specific products, as are bladder control pads. Both styles provide mild to moderate INCT control.

Another incontinence product style is the liner pad, which is designed for moderate to maximum INCT production. These provide larger coverage yet a discreet, close body fit when worn with specifically designed reusable pants or one's own underwear.

Traditional briefs, also known as adult diapers, are typically a convenient choice for those experiencing large amounts of urine or fecal loss. The one-piece design offers maximum coverage and protection for complete bladder and/or bowel control.

Another category of incontinence products is the bladder control underpad. These are used on chairs, beds and wheelchairs to protect the mattress or fabric from any accidents or leakage. Underpads can be especially useful for physically or mentally incapacitated persons who may be seated for long periods of time or cannot express to the caregiver when there is an incontinence issue. These come as either disposable or reusable. Disposable underpads are convenient while the reusable ones are cost-efficient. The choice depends on each person’s needs.

Thanks to specialty home health care centers there are INCT support and savings programs available to those managing incontinence. To help ease the emotional discomfort there are discreet home delivery programs available and discount pricing plans. These programs allow for products to be delivered in a discreet manner so as not to suggest what they are. Scheduling convenient delivery prevents customers from running out of product each month and offers maximum savings.

Understanding the multiple choices and programs can be overwhelming. INCT Specialists are available to help determine which questions need answering in order to assess each person’s needs. Often they are available not only in-stores but also through toll free numbers or online. They can also offer free, try-before-you-buy samples for personal evaluations. Remember, no matter the situation there is an incontinence product or program that will suit each person’s needs; it’s simply a matter of having the facts.

About Binson's:

Today there are Binson's Home Health Care Center retail outlets in both Michigan and Florida that offer continuously updated products and services. If you or someone you know is suffering from incontinence these are some common myths and concerns that you should be aware of:

Incontinence Only Affects the Very Old

FALSE. Incontinence is actually very common. According to the National Association for Incontinence (NAFC), incontinence characteristically affects more women than men. At some point in their lives 1 out of every 4 women and 1 out of every 8 men will experience incontinence. In fact, bladder weakness affects more people under the age of 53 than over. If the person you care for feels embarrassed by their incontinence then they should be reassured to know that they are not alone.

Don’t Discuss it with Your Loved One Because They Will Get Embarrassed

FALSE. Most people do find this a bit tricky at first, but once you both accept that it’s just a malfunction of either the muscles or nerves then it should get easier. After moving past the initial conversation you can discuss the more important issue of how to manage the condition with comfort and dignity. Talking about it as early as possible will lead to a more open and understanding relationship with your loved one. This will benefit you both and make planning for the future easier.

Caring For Someone with Incontinence Means Giving Up Your Own Life

FALSE. There’s no doubt that caring for someone who is incontinent, particularly if they have additional mental or physical difficulties, requires time, patience and love. However, with the right routines, tactics and help, the role of caregiver can be rewarding too. Always be sure to make time for yourself in order to maintain the necessary parts of your life that make you who you are.

We’ll Just Have to Get Used to the Bad Odors

FALSE. These days there’s no need for anyone to live with bad odors. This can be a big fear for people with incontinence and can make them reluctant to receive visits from family, friends or caregivers. Modern products with super-efficient absorbency, odor neutralizers and anti-leakage barriers will keep your loved one comfortably dry and fresh even after urinating.

Incontinence Products Are All the Same

FALSE. There are many different incontinence products available for everyone’s unique needs. Your choice will depend on both the level of incontinence and your loved one’s mental and physical condition. Someone who is seated or lying down for most of the time will require a different type of protection than a person who is still fairly active. Using the right product will help reduce leakages, lower product consumption and increase overall comfort. It’s worth understanding the difference between items in order to have the right protection. Contact a reputable home health care center for information and assistance in determining which incontinence products will best suite your loved one’s needs.

Incontinence Isn’t Something Serious to Worry About

FALSE. Incontinence is a potentially serious condition. It’s a warning sign that the bladder and its supporting structures or related internal systems are not functioning correctly. People suffering from it also have an increased occurrence of bladder infections and depression. Unfortunately they also often report a gradual change in their daily activities due to the unpredictable, awkward, and embarrassing nature of the condition. Incontinence can affect everything from intimacy or going to the movies to even the most natural human experiences such as sleeping or laughing.

There’s No Way to Manage Incontinence

FALSE. There are certain precautions and things to be aware of that can help manage incontinence. For instance, some foods and ingredients such as caffeine and sugar can trigger bladder activity. People suffering from incontinence should also make sure to properly hydrate. It’s a common myth that people showing early signs of the condition should minimize liquid intake in order to control wetting. In fact, this dehydrates the body and creates optimal conditions for urinary tract and bladder infections. In addition, there are several medicines now available to help treat incontinence such as FDA-approved Ditropan XL and Detrol LA. However, as with all medical conditions, seeking out the help of a professional medical doctor is the only way to accurately assess your unique situation and treatment.

Developing Incontinence with Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of diabetes, is a lifelong disease characterized by high levels of glucose in the blood. Those experiencing this disease face many additional challenges beyond diabetes itself. One of these challenges is the increased occurrence and severity of both fecal and urinary incontinence.

There are several aspects that connect diabetes and incontinence, but the increased incidence of obesity in diabetics can be considered the main cause. Increased weight, especially in the abdomen, places excessive strain on the muscles of the pelvic floor that control bladder function. This strain or pressure causes involuntary urine leakage, and this type of urinary incontinence is called stress incontinence. Any movements that increase pressure in the abdominal area such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, physical activity, etc. will cause the leakage of small amounts of urine.

Another factor linking diabetes to urinary incontinence is the effect diabetes may have on nerve function in the bladder. Damaged nerves can cause overactive bladder or urge incontinence. Urge incontinence is when the muscular wall in the bladder has a sudden contraction causing the urge to urinate and sometimes the loss of urine. Fast movements and activities likes sitting and standing can trigger urge incontinence. Nerve damage caused by diabetes may also cause a loss of bladder sensation and weakened pelvic floor muscles creating the inability to completely empty the bladder.

If a diabetic's muscles and nerves become too damaged and fail to ever cause bladder contractions, overflow incontinence will occur. With overflow incontinence the bladder never empties and continuously leaks. An early warning sign of the onset of overflow incontinence is a slow or timid stream of urine while using the restroom.

Other reasons why many diabetics develop fecal or urinary incontinence include:

* Constipation- Over half of those with diabetes experience constipation which makes it difficult to pass urine.
* High Blood Glucose Levels- Improperly controlled diabetes causes glucose in the blood to run very high. A person's body will attempt to eliminate the sugars through the urine causing a large amount of urine to be produced.
* Water Retention- Water held in a diabetic's lower body caused by coronary artery disease can increase the production of urine at night. This leads to frequent urination during the night and even bedwetting.
* Lack of Mobility- Diabetes can come with serious side effects that can decrease mobility. Amputation, vision deterioration, and deep pains in the limbs can prevent people from reaching the toilet in time causing urine leakage.
* Diabetic Medications- Some medications used to treat diabetes can have side effects that lend themselves to the onset of incontinence. These may cause weight gain, fluid retention, bladder nerve damage, and even incontinence itself.

To treat and control diabetes related fecal or urinary incontinence, the proper management of blood glucose levels must be maintained. Also, every step necessary must be taken to keep body weight in the normal range. A proper diet and exercise regime will not only help maintain a healthy body weight, but it can also help maintain healthy blood glucose levels as well. Pharmacological interventions may also be necessary to treat diabetes related incontinence.

Experts at a health care center or medical equipment supply company can help diabetics find the best hospital grade products to provide them with a discreet fit and proper protection level. They treat customers to personal customer service and are available continuously through toll free phone numbers, in stores or online. A few reputable health care centers and medical equipment supply companies also offer discreet incontinence supply home delivery programs. Customers save money by utilizing their sample programs and receive meaningful discounts for ordering their urinary incontinence products in volume. In addition, they also save time by having them delivered right to their doorstep each month.

About Binson's Home Health Care Centers
Binson's Home Health Care Centers began as Binson's Pharmacy in Center Line, Mich. during the 1950's and grew to the home health care center it is today. The main objective of taking a vacation after all is to get in some much needed relaxation. The last thing anyone needs is to be worried about finding the closest restroom while in the midst of being at beaches, museums, amusement parks, or traveling to the destination.

For the 25 million Americans who experience urinary incontinence, traveling on planes, trains, or in cars is possible with the help of many incontinence products. Urine leakage always seems to happen at the worst possible time, and learning to manage it while traveling will prevent a stressful vacation.

Planning a vacation is time consuming especially when planning around incontinence. Having incontinence products shipped via a free home delivery program is a time-saving and cost-effective method when preparing a trip. The incontinence products are delivered right to your door each month saving you the hassle of rushing out to the store when your supply is low.

The following is a list of tips and advice for how to manage incontinence while traveling:

Transportation:

* While traveling on planes or trains make sure to sit in an aisle seat to easily access the bathrooms when needed. Sitting in an aisle seat will prevent moving in front of other passengers every time nature calls. In case urine leakage causes stains or odor, an aisle seat can also provide more confidence when sitting in a confined space for a long time.
* Planes and trains have limited waste disposal facilities which cause difficulties disposing incontinence products. Wearing a product designed for maximum protection such as protective underwear can retain greater amounts of urine leakage and control odor for lengthy plane and train commutes.
* Automobiles are a convenient mode of transportation when experiencing incontinence since rest areas are more prevalent along major highways and interstates. Having a GPS system in the automobile is essential. It provides a list of restaurants, gas stations, and other points of interest which, in turn, will give directions to the closest location for a bathroom.

Diet:

* Paying close attention to food and liquid intake while traveling can manage incontinence easier. Limit intake of salty snacks, alcohol, caffeine, and don't drink anything three to four hours prior to sleeping.
* Also, a person's understanding of which types of foods and liquids stimulate their incontinence and which foods alleviate incontinence is helpful to get the most out of every minute in paradise.

Travel Kit:
A travel kit should include:

* Plastic bags with twisty ties for clean and easy disposal
* Hand wipes and antibacterial cleansing products
* Include a variety of incontinence products:
o Pads and liners for the lightest urinary leakage (small enough to fit in purses and briefcases)
o Incontinence pants for the light to moderate urinary leakage when used with pads and liners
o Protective underwear (also known as adult pull-ups) for moderate to heavy urinary leakage
o Adult diapers for maximum urinary leakage protection
o Extra undergarments, pants, and outer clothes
o Travel soap bars and disposable wash clothes
o Organizing these items into a small duffel bag or a backpack makes it easier to travel. It's small enough to be used as a carry-on luggage on airplanes or to fit in the luggage compartment on a train or bus.

Plan Ahead:

* Whether traveling en-route to your destination or relishing the sights and sounds of the vacation, plan bathroom breaks every 20 to 30 minutes following meals.
* When visiting tourist attractions look at a map or ask guides for the location of the restrooms in case a get-a-way is needed. However, the study found that when incontinence does occur, the condition is usually worse than in white women. Black women experience a heavier flow of urine leakage during each occurrence of incontinence, sometimes to the point of noticeable wetting of their pants compared to only one third of white women.

The medical community has always believed that African American women don't experience stress incontinence, or urine leakage during exercise, coughing, laughing or any activity that increases pressure in the abdominal area. Those with stress urinary incontinence have inadequate strength of the pelvic floor muscles. The U of M study proved otherwise. Black women do experience stress urinary incontinence, but may not have been diagnosed because of the common held belief that they don't.

The study also found that African American women experience urge incontinence twice as often as Caucasian women. Urge incontinence, also known as overactive bladder, is characterized by the sudden contraction of the bladder's muscular wall causing the urgency to use the bathroom and involuntary urine leakage. Fast movements often trigger urge incontinence and it can be acquired as a result of pregnancy.

In the past doctors also believed that the medical conditions that influence the occurrence of urinary incontinence are different between black and white women. The U of M study found that this is not the case. Those conditions, such as constipation, diabetes, obesity, chronic lung disease and depression were found to be the same in both races and cause urinary incontinence to occur at comparable rates between the two.

Numbers from the University of Michigan Health Systems study:

* The study included over twenty eight hundred African American and Caucasian women from three southeastern Michigan counties
* 27 percent of the women surveyed experienced moderate urinary incontinence
* Of these women experiencing moderate urinary incontinence, 14.6 percent were African American women and 33.1 percent were Caucasian women
* 25 percent of black women with moderate incontinence experience stress incontinence compared to 39 percent of white women
* 24 percent of black women with moderate incontinence experience urge incontinence compared to 11 percent of white women- 51 percent had a combination of both stress and urge incontinence
* The ages of women in the study ranged from 35 to 64 years old. The average age was 42 and around 70 percent had delivered at least one child vaginally

Overall, the study demonstrates that in the moderate category white women have significantly higher incidences of incontinence; black women may experience incontinence less often but at a higher severity. The study also showed that African American women have higher incidences of urge incontinence and that Caucasian women have higher incidences of stress incontinence.

Regardless of your frequency and level of bother, managing urinary incontinence is made easier than ever before. New gender specific products have become recently available in hospital grade protection. Understanding the basic principles of cost, fit, and protection levels can help you decide what type of product is best suited for you.

A cost effective route to take when buying incontinence supplies is through purchasing reusable cloth adult diapers. These can be used for light leaks and heavy bowel and urine leakage when used with adult plastic pants. Cloth adult diapers are usually made from soft terry or flannel cotton and are available in many different styles ranging from pre-folded to pull-on. Most cloth diapers are made from breathable fabric that allows for moisture to evaporate and air to circulate through eliminating the problem of diaper rash.

Although reusable cloth adult diapers can save you money, they are a hassle to keep clean. Washing heavily soiled diapers requires multiple steps and can take up a lot of your time. Another great cost effective route to buying adult diapers is through a discreet home delivery system. Some medical equipment companies and home health care centers offer incentives and discounts for joining a scheduled home delivery service. These services bring you incontinence supplies discreetly to your front door each month in bulk- no more frequent trips to the store!

Understanding the basic principles of the proper protection level of varying incontinence products will save you many headaches as you try to pick the best product for your needs. Incontinence products range from pads to protective underwear to adult diapers all with increasing protection levels.

Incontinence pads and liners offer the lightest protection and are best used to enhance absorbency in other garments with a barrier. These products have the look of a feminine hygiene product and feature an absorbent layer to quickly dispense fluid and ensure dryness.

Incontinence pants offer moderate protection against more leakage when paired with an absorbent pad or liner. These pants eliminate the need for wide and bulky products and appear and feel like regular underwear.

For protection against moderate to just shy of maximum leakage, protective underwear, also known as pull-ups, is the best solution. All have a super absorbent core for maximum fluid retention and odor control. They are designed to offer a snug and secure fit to keep clothing dry for maximum discreetness.

Briefs, commonly known as adult diapers, offer those suffering from incontinence with maximum protection against the heaviest bowel or urine leakage. Over the years these have been revamped and improved to supply those suffering from incontinence with a better quality of life. Their adjustable tabs allow for more secure fastening and curved leg elastic for a close fit to prevent leakage. Adult diapers with Velcro tabs offer a more secure fit than those with tape tabs and have unlimited refastenability. They can easily be put on without having to remove pants or pantyhose.

After you have determined which product will provide you with the best protection and fit, enroll in a home delivery program through a medical equipment company or a home health care center that will conveniently and discreetly bring the products to your door and save you money. Incontinence shouldn't hold you back from life- the right products will help you preserve your quality of life and your dignity.

About Binson's Home Health Care Centers
Binson's Home Health Care Centers began as Binson's Pharmacy in Center Line, Mich. during the 1950's and grew to the home health care center it is today. For many men, post-prostatectomy incontinence resolves itself in four to six months after the operation. Fully understanding bladder function and why male UI occurs after prostate cancer treatments is crucial to the fast revival of bladder control.

The bladder's purpose is to receive urine from the kidneys and act as a holding tank until it is full and signals you to urinate. During urination, the muscles surrounding the bladder contract pushing urine out of your bladder and into a tube called the urethra. The muscles around the urethra then relax and allow urine to flow out of your body. In men, the prostate gland surrounds the urethra and as a result, an enlarged prostate and prostate cancer treatment can affect urination.

The most common type of UI in men is stress incontinence or stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and often occurs after a prostatectomy. Stress incontinence is when involuntary leakage or dripping of urine occurs due to inadequate strength of the pelvic floor muscles. Any movements that increase pressure in the abdominal area such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, physical activity, etc. will cause the leakage of small amounts of urine. Prostate surgery can weaken or damage the muscles that surround the bladder and urethra or can damage the nerves that help control bladder function and cause stress incontinence.

After radiation treatment urge incontinence (also known as overactive bladder) can occur. Urge incontinence is when the bladder's muscular wall has a sudden contraction causing an urgency to urinate and an involuntary loss of urine. Sitting, standing or fast movements can trigger urge incontinence. Those with this type of incontinence can experience urine leakage during sleep, after consuming a small amount of water or when they touch or hear water running.

Most men will experience UI of some form after prostate cancer treatments, but doctors have recently developed new ways to reduce the occurrence. Surgeons now have the ability to save more of the muscle surrounding the bladder and the urethra when removing the prostate. Doctors have also grown more accurate, with the help of new computer technology, in using radiation to destroy the prostate while minimizing the effects on the bladder. Both of these developments help patients retain the ability to control their bladder much more quickly after treatment.

Treating and managing UI after prostate cancer can range from at home techniques and post-operative support to medication and surgery. Talk with your doctor to determine which treatment or set of treatments is best for you. Most doctors will encourage you to try bladder training and behavioral techniques before trying devices, surgeries and medication.

Bladder training and behavioral techniques can teach you how to manage your UI and regain pelvic floor strength. They are successful approaches to treating both stress and urge incontinence. Kegel exercises, which involve the repeated squeezing of the muscles you use when stopping urination mid-stream; bathroom schedules, setting specific times to go to the bathroom; and lifestyle modification, the changing of habits to avoid caffeine, alcohol, irritants, drinking less fluids and not drinking before sleep are all a part of reviving bladder control.

Don't be embarrassed by UI leakage after prostate cancer treatment, learn properly how to manage it to give you the most comfort during the healing process. Talk to your doctor about ways to treat it and about which incontinence products will provide you with proper protection. Discreet delivery programs are available to bring the products directly to your door and save you money.

Stress Incontinence? Urge Incontinence? You're Not Alone

Incontinence can be embarrassing and tough to discuss, but if you are facing this problem you are not alone. According to the National Association for Incontinence (NAFC), urinary incontinence (UI) affects 200 million people worldwide (1) with 25 million adult Americans experiencing temporary or chronic UI.

UI is most prevalent in women. In fact, research results indicate that one in four women over the age of 18 experience episodes of leaking urine involuntarily (2). Men often experience UI after prostate surgery and in many cases, the incontinence resolves itself in four to six months after the operation. Some may also experience urine leakage during physical activity. Women often experience UI problems caused by menopause, a urinary tract Infection or pregnancy.

Most people generally view incontinence as a normal process of aging. Information on healthy bladder function can help promote the understanding that incontinence is not a disease itself, but is a symptom caused by other problems within your body that are usually treatable (3). According to research, nearly two-thirds of men and women age 30 to 70 have never discussed bladder health with their doctor (2). Understanding the many types of incontinence and why it occurs may help you feel more comfortable talking about and confronting the problem.

Types of Incontinence:

Stress Incontinence
Stress incontinence or stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is when involuntary leakage or dripping of urine occurs due to inadequate strength of the pelvic floor muscles. Any movements that increase pressure in the abdominal area such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, physical activity, etc. will cause the leakage of small amounts of urine. SUI is the most common type of incontinence in men and often occurs after a prostatectomy. SUI occurs in women when physical changes to the abdominal area occur. These changes may result from pregnancy, childbirth and menopause. SUI can also occur during the week before a women's menstrual period because estrogen levels are lowered at this time. This leads to lower muscular pressure around the urethra which increases the chance of urine leakage.

Urge Incontinence or Overactive Bladder
Urge incontinence is when the bladder's muscular wall has a sudden contraction causing an urgency to urinate and an involuntary loss of urine. These contractions can occur because of damage to the bladder's nerves or to the actual muscles. Sitting, standing or fast movements can trigger urge incontinence. Those with this type of incontinence can experience urine leakage during sleep, after consuming a small amount of water or when they touch or hear water running. It is common for women to acquire this as a result of their pregnancy.

Bowel Incontinence
Bowel incontinence or fecal incontinence is the loss of control over your bowels. Common causes include prolonged muscle stretching caused by constipation, muscle damage to the internal and external sphincters, damage to the nerves that control sphincter function, decreased storage capacity caused by scarring on the walls of the rectum, and diarrhea. A weakened pelvic floor may also cause bowel incontinence.

Functional incontinence
Functional incontinence arises when you identify the need to urinate but are unable to make it to a restroom because of limited mobility. Generally you lose large amounts of urine. There are many causes of functional incontinence some of which include poor mobility, depression, dementia, anxiety, low dexterity or any other situation in which it is not possible to reach a bathroom.

Overflow incontinence
Overflow incontinence is the loss of the ability to identify the need to urinate. The bladder never empties and therefore continuously leaks. This type of incontinence is caused from weak bladder muscles, a blocked urethra due to a kidney stone or tumor, or from diseases that affect the autonomic nervous system which can reduce the signals from the bladder. In men, the enlargement of the prostate can restrict the flow of urine and cause overflow incontinence. This form of incontinence is rare in women but can be caused by fibroid or ovarian tumors or from a twist in the urethra. An early warning sign is a slow or timid stream of urine during voluntary urination.

Transient incontinence
Transient incontinence is temporary incontinence caused by certain medications, limited mobility, mental disability, urinary tract infections, and severe constipation, which can pinch the urinary tract closed and block urine flow. If urine leakage still occurs after all temporary causes of incontinence have been dealt with, the condition becomes established incontinence.

Incontinence can make you feel humiliated and alone, but self-treating incontinence is not the most effective way to manage the problem. Do not be afraid to talk to others about your concerns and don't hesitate to make an appointment to see your doctor to address these issues.

(1) Vulker, R. It would make sense that less expensive diapers are made with less expensive materials. This is one area where cheaper is not better. You don't have to pay an arm and a leg but here are the benefits that are experienced with a higher priced diaper product, really a higher quality diaper product. They are drier and more comfortable, no leaks; they are made with cloth like breathable material for your skin protection; they are made with absorbency indicators on the outside of the diaper, so as to not mistake when it is time to change; and, they are built with odor reducers for more confidence and security. When it comes to Bladder control, you want the tools you need to feel as you normally feel.

Where can I order my Adult Diapers with discrete shipping?

You can order them online at www.binsons.com or contact one of our customer service representatives at (888)-246-7667.

To the best of our knowledge, the information contained herein is accurate. Reviewed by Michael W. Smith, MD
A shopping spree in Milan, a hike in Ecuador, an island-hopping cruise. On vacation, you can escape most everyday hassles -- except incontinence. At every turn, it's unfamiliar territory. If you have an accident, what can you do?

"Everyone who has incontinence has developed some coping strategies," says Roger Dmochowski, MD, a urologist and director of the Vanderbilt Continence Center in Nashville. "They do what they need to do. It's amazing how good some people are at estimating their bladder's problem."

"On vacation, there's much uncertainty, so absorbent incontinence pads are a must," says May Wakamatsu, MD, chief of Vincent Urogynecology at Massachusetts General Hospital." If you're in an exotic location, it's difficult to know where a restroom is. If you're going dancing and you know you leak a lot while dancing, you might wear them. Having good protection is best."

A bumpy plane ride is an accident waiting to happen. Who knows what else lies ahead on your trip? If you've tried to envision the possibilities -- and packed incontinence products -- you'll be fine.

Your Strategy for Handling Incontinence

Book trips with care. "Always take an aisle seat," Dmochowski says. "Never take a middle seat in the middle of an airplane." Locate restrooms as soon as you're on board.

Plan your wardrobe. Dark clothes won't show a stain. Bring multiple changes of clothes in case something happens. Be prepared to hand-wash clothing.

Pack a separate suitcase with pads. If you need absorbent pads, it's best to take all your supplies with you. "You don't want to look for pads in the middle of the night in a strange city," says Dmochowski. Don't forget lots of undergarments.

Remember disposable bags. You can stuff used incontinence pads in the bags, then dispose of them later.

Carry a daypack. Everyone carries small backpacks -- and yours can hide extra pads, disposable underwear, towelettes, and plastic bags (to carry wet items).

Pack tampons. A tampon can help prevent leaks from stress incontinence -- those triggered by laughing, coughing, exercise -- by putting pressure on the urethra. Even if you're not having a period, a tampon can help with incontinence.

Consider a pessary. This is a removable device that helps support pelvic organs to prevent stress urinary incontinence that commonly occurs after childbirth. Your doctor can fit you for a pessary.

Take incontinence medications. If you have a prescription for overactive bladder medications -- but don't take them regularly -- start before you leave home, Wakamatsu tells WebMD. "They start to take effect in the first 24 hours, and reach a good level in your bloodstream after three days."
Dmochowski advises starting medications five to seven days before leaving, to ensure the best protection. "That's the best use of the medication," he tells WebMD. "If you take it the week before vacation, you'll be fine."

Modify your fluid intake. Cutting back in fluids, especially caffeine and alcohol, really helps if you have urge incontinence, advises Wakamatsu. "A lot of people don't realize that caffeine is a diuretic," she tells WebMD.

Dine carefully. Spicy foods can trigger accidents if you have urge incontinence. So can acidic foods, including citrus fruits and juices and tomatoes. Enjoy the local cuisine, but choose carefully.

Practice Kegel exercises in the car or on the plane. These exercises can help manage leakage. You learn to feel the pelvic muscle that controls the bladder -- then tighten that muscle at the instant a leak might occur. "You have to do them regularly to keep pelvic muscles tight," says Wakamatsu. To do Kegels, contract the muscles that you would use to stop the flow of urine. Hold the contraction for three seconds and then relax. Do this eight to 10 times, at least three times a week.

This information is from
http://www.webmd.com/urinary-incontinence-oab/coping-08/vacation-tips © 2007 WebMD, Inc. This figure becomes gradually higher in men from the age of sixty.

How does the bladder work?
When you eat or drink your body absorbs liquids. The kidneys filter waste products from the body fluids and make urine. A continuous trickle passes from the kidneys to the bladder and the bladder slowly expands. When the bladder is full a signal goes to the brain indicating the need to go to the toilet. Once the toilet is reached the brain then tells the large bladder muscle to squeeze and contract. At the same time, it tells the support muscles to relax and let the urine pass.

How often do most people empty their bladder?
Most people empty their bladders between four to eight times a day.

I’m relatively young and have a weak bladder. Isn’t this something that only affects older people?
Many men have problems urinating for a variety of reasons and regardless of age. Men who have undergone prostate surgery sometimes experience weak bladders for a limited period, maybe a year. Young boys with some kind of penile inflammation can also be affected. Heavy smokers cough more frequently than non-smokers and this can exacerbate the situation. Too much coffee, tea or alcohol doesn’t help either. So you can see, age is not the only factor.

Do exercises really help?
Yes they do. Please talk to your doctor about the possibilities for treating your bladder control problem. The treatment of your bladder control problem, used in conjunction with Adult Incontinence products, will ensure that you can regain your confidence.

If I drink less will things improve?
No. Drinking less will make your urine more concentrated, which will in turn irritate your bladder, causing you to urinate more often. You should drink 6 to 8 glasses of fluid each day. However, it is not recommended that you drink excessive amounts either as this could lead to distension of the bladder.

My symptoms are different than those I have read about. We have found in research that one in four women over 35 have experienced bladder weakness.

At the same time it tells the support muscles (pelvic floor muscles) that surround the urethra - the outlet from the bladder - to relax and let the urine pass.

How often do most people empty their bladder?
Most people empty their bladders between four to eight times a day.

I’m relatively young and have a weak bladder. Isn’t this something that only affects older people?
One out of four women over 35 years old have experienced bladder weakness. Pregnancy and childbirth contribute to this figure. Menopausal women often experience bladder weakness. Even young girls sometimes experience leaking after strenuous exercise. Heavy smokers cough more frequently than non-smokers, and this can exacerbate the situation. Too much coffee, tea or alcohol doesn’t help either. So you can see, age is not the only factor.

What can be done about bladder weakness?
The best way to try to prevent or reduce the number of leakage episodes is to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles by performing the exercises described in the training program section of the website. This tends to be more effective if you have the stress type of bladder control problem. For other types of bladder control problems, various other methods of treatment are available. Please talk to your doctor about the possibilities for treating your bladder control problem. The treatments described, used in conjunction with Binson's absorbent products, will ensure that you can regain your confidence.

Do exercises really help?
Yes they do. Please have a look at the training program in the bladder weakness section of this website. Here you can see what exercises you can do. If in doubt we recommend you first consult with a doctor or urologist who can tell you which exercises are best for you.

I have read that bladder weakness can be treated with muscle-training exercises. How long before the exercises start to show results?
You will begin to feel the benefit of exercises after just a few weeks and after 8 to 12 months there is a very good chance you will be symptom-free. Even if you are not, your situation will have improved, and with the right products to help you, you will regain your confidence. The sooner you act, the better! Most people wait so long that it takes the body some time to get back to earlier routines.

If I drink less will things improve?
No. Drinking less will make your urine more concentrated which will in turn irritate your bladder, causing you to urinate more often. You should drink 6 to 8 glasses a day. However, it is not recommended that you drink excessive amounts either as this could lead to distension of the bladder.

Can I use sanitary pads for bladder weakness?
No; urine is light and is discharged in larger quantities; menstrual discharge is heavier and comes out more slowly. Two different conditions require two different absorption techniques and two different products.

What products would I need?
There are Adult Incontinence products for all situations- from mild bladder weakness to heavy bladder and bowel incontinence. Please talk to your doctor to find out what would be the best solution for you.

Choose the best position for you

Lie on your back:

with your legs pulled up

with a cushion supporting your legs

with your legs resting on a chair

Relax your back, buttocks, abdomen and legs as much as possible. Putyour hand on the lower half of your abdomen and make sure the musclesare not tensed. Breathe easily.

Find the right muscles
Now you should concentrate on locating the right muscles. Slowly contract the sphincter. Squeeze the muscles around the urinary tract - imagine that you need to go to the toilet but can't get to one. Continue squeezing upwards so that you feel the pelvic floor being sucked inward and upwards. Repeat this contraction using moderate effort for about 2 seconds and then rest a further 2 seconds. Do this a number of times.

By consciously interrupting the flow of urine next time you visit thetoilet, you will be able to ascertain whether or not you have found theright muscles. But remember this is not part of the training program -just a way of checking.

Another way to check is by placing a finger between your scrotum and the anus and feeling the muscles contract.

The 'strength' contraction
When you are sure that you have located the right muscles, you can squeeze harder and longer. Squeeze as hard as you can for 5 seconds and then relax for 5 seconds. Repeat this 5 - 10 times.

The 'endurance' contraction
Do the same but hold for anywhere between 30 seconds and one minute. After a while, you will feel your strength ebbing but don't worry! Still try to contract the muscles for up to one minute. Do this exercise just once a day.

The 'resistance' contraction
When you have mastered the 'strength' contraction, you are ready to try this combined with abdominal pressure. For example:

Squeeze at the same time you do sit-ups

Squeeze when you cough

Squeeze and jump at the same time

Squeeze when you're out running

Squeeze next time you lift something heavy

As this training program only takes a few minutes of your time, it would be a good idea to repeat it as often as possible, preferably 6 -8 times daily. No injuries will result; it's extremely beneficial and is also an excellent precautionary measure!

Women

Excercising the muscles in the pelvic floor is an effective way to minimize or prevent bladder leakage. They can be activated voluntarily so it is easy to make them strong. Excercising costs nothing and has no side effects, so try this before starting other treatment methods.

After 2-3 months of excercising you should notice an improvement. If you do not, talk to your doctor who will either help you to improve your excercises or maybe suggest an alternative method of treatment. However, whatever the doctor's suggests, he or she will stress the importance of remaining physically active.

The pelvic floor muscles
The pelvic floor muscles are a group of muscles inside the pelvis that forms a floor in the body. They surround the urethra, vagina and rectum and should, along with the sphincter muscles, maintain control over these openings. The muscles should also support the urethra, bladder and womb and withstand all increases in abdominal pressure that occur during physical exercise.

If the pelvic floor muscles are weak the urethra can fall during exertion, resulting in bladder leakage.

Finding the right muscles is important
The pelvic floor muscles are not easy to locate oneself. Studies have shown that some 30% of women who try to train their pelvic floor muscles do so incorrectly. It is important that you are aware of the most common mistakes. They are:

Tensing the buttocks, thighs and stomach muscles instead of the pelvic floor muscles.

Lying on your back with bent knees and then squeezing the buttocks and lifting up at the same time. This is a good exercise for the buttocks, back and thigh muscles, but has little effect on the pelvic floor muscles

The following test should prove helpful
Try interrupting the flow when you urinate. Try to feel which muscles you are using to do this. These are the muscles you need to work on. Note that this is only a test to identify the correct musculature and should not be repeated on a regular basis.

Correct contraction of the muscles
Correct contraction of the pelvic floor muscles feels like a small lift under the pelvis up into the body. There should be no accompanying movement of other parts of the body, e.g. the buttocks, stomach or the inner thighs. If you have a problem identifying the right muscles or if you are not sure that you are exercising correctly contact your doctor and/or urologist.

When you have learned to use the muscles correctly, train as hard as you can without using other muscle groups. Gradually increase the number of repetitions to 10 times. Try to hold each muscle contraction for 6-8 seconds.

Intensive pelvic floor exercise
When you are able to hold the muscle contraction for 8 seconds you can try to draw the muscles further in with rapid contractions 3-4 times at the end of the 'hold period' - contract, hold, hold, then quickly lift in, in, in. Train the pelvic floor muscles 3 times a day with 10 repetitions each time, holding each repetition for 6-8 seconds.

In order to get the best possible results from the pelvic floor exercises, you should train at near-maximum intensity as described above for around 6 months. When the desired effect has been achieved, you will be able to reduce the frequency without losing muscle strength.

Positions for correct exercising of the pelvic floor muscles
In order to isolate the pelvic floor muscles, you should choose positions that make it difficult to use other muscles and which enable you to train as hard as possible. Choose from these positions and see which ones are best for you.

1. Stand with your legs well apart. Put your hands on your buttock muscles and make sure you are not using these when you tense the pelvic floor muscles up and in.

2. Read the causes below.

Men
The most commonly experienced type of bladder weakness by men is a continuous dripping. This is often caused by a swollen prostate impeding the passage of the urine when urinating. As a result the bladder is not completely emptied.

Men's bladders can become temporarily weakened after a prostate operation, although generally speaking things get back to normal after about a year.

Obesity can also lead to urine loss as it places undue strain on the abdominal and pelvic muscles.

Smoker's cough can also be an indirect cause of leaking as the coughing is frequent and often more violent. The greater risk of contracting the circulatory diseases that smoking causes and the subsequent prescription of diuretic medicines will also increase the risk of leaking.

Nerve damage, some medications, constipation or even an infection can also lead to bladder weakness.

The most common type of bladder weakness amongst men is overflow.

These are the different types of bladder problems that exist:

Overflow and drip
When your bladder does not empty completely urine builds up and in the end may begin to dribble out. An enlarged prostate can also impede the flow of urine leading to continuous dribbling.

Stress
Unexpected leaking when you laugh, cough, sneeze or do some kinds of physical training. Weakened pelvic floor muscles are the usual cause.

Urge
You experience a strong and sudden urge to pass urine. The bladder tries to empty despite your efforts to restrain leaking. There is a lack of co-ordination between impulses the brain gives to the bladder and what your bladder does.

Mixed symptoms
It is fairly common to have more than one type of symptom.

Protection
Stay clean and sanitary. Wear our Adult Diapers. You can order them online at www.binsons.com or from our customer service representatives at (888)-246-7667.

Women
Weakened pelvic floor muscles
The bladder and outlet passage are supported and held in place by a hammock of muscles called pelvic floor muscles that keep your bladder closed. If these muscles lose their strength and flexibility even everyday activities such as coughing may cause leaking.

Pelvic floor muscles can become stretched and weakened during childbirth. Being overweight can also put an added strain on them.

Menopause
All body muscles become weakened over time and after menopause, the reduction in the quantity of oestrogen also affects the abdominal muscles. As a result, the bladder shifts its position and the muscles around the urinary tract become less effective.

Other causes
Nerve damage, some medications, constipation or even an infection can also lead to bladder weakness.

These causes result in the folllowing four types of bladder problems:

Stress
Unexpected leaking when you laugh, cough, sneeze or do some kinds of physical training. Most often, weakened pelvic floor muscles or the menopause are the causes.

Urge
You experience a strong and sudden urge to pass urine. The bladder tries to empty despite your efforts to restrain leaking. There is a lack of co-ordination between impulses the brain gives to the bladder and what your bladder does.

Overflow and drip
When your bladder does not empty completely, urine builds up and in the end may begin to dribble out.

Mixed symptoms
It is fairly common to have more than one type of symptom.

Protection
Stay clean and sanitary.
