Work in progress; After analyzing and visualizing the festival catalogue data with our processing based tool, we are now generating huge forest scenes with 2-3gb of geometry data, where each tree represents one entry in the database.

This confronted us with completely new challenges e.g. the renderer constantly running out of memory and therefore crashing, which called the whole project into question. After lots of fiddling we found a solution using Luxrender and Amazon EC2 - soon more on that topic on: www.field.io/process

It also allows to persist/restore a configuration, even with embedded images, type etc and allows various hacky use. We even used this "preset-loading instead of keyframing" technique to create lenghty animations/ films for some of the recent projects (e.g. 1, 2)

This proved to be immensely useful in exploring variations of the algorithms and brought dynamic events into some otherwise relatively linear animations.
However the underlying system couldn't deny its .ini-style/ key-value origins. Which made making more complex models, real keyframing etc. really difficult.

To make a push forward in usability and to avoid re-writing all the lines that libTweak already took, i started exploring the Model-driven architecture approach using Eclipse's EMF and RCP frameworks inspired by Toxi's model driven design posts. The interesting thing about it is that it allows you to define your core data objects in a simple graphical editor and then auto-generates plugins, editors and test applications from it. At the push of a button! :)

So far this looks quite promising!

live coding in scalide

late night technical research for a new project.
this time: live-coding with scalide[1] + fieldkit[2] + processing[3]/ jogl in scala[4]

the idea is simple, instead of continously writing and restarting the code youre working on (and thereby breaking the design-flow as Andrew[5] argues). you simply write a few lines, press shift+enter and whatever it should do happens in realtime a few ms after! (yes, im a bit enthused :)

notice how multiple processing sketches render the same particle simulation. also new behaviours can be written and added/removed at runtime even after the sketch has been started! i created an attractor behaviour on the fly that reacts to mouse events in the first sketch, affecting the simulation in the second too.

the point of all that? although its still a hacky business, it makes testing out new ideas/small sketches a lot more fun. its very useful for interactively developing a broad range of behaviours for animate agents too...

[1] code.google.com/p/scalide
[2] dev.field.io/hg/opensource/FieldKit/ (useable, but really experimental yet)
