ASUS is favorite computer and computer component makers, seems to combine the two. Remember the Nuvifone G60? It was unfortunately an unsuccessful attempt to enter the cell phone market, in which both Garmin and ASUS are still trying to accumulate the kind of expertise and experience that industry stalwarts such as LG Mobile, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson already possess.

However, as ASUS and Garmin are strong in their respective competency — Garmin in GPS and ASUS in gadget design and manufacturing — they may eventually succeed.

In the case of ASUS, the more obvious strength lies in its leadership in designing and manufacturing computer components and combining them into reliable, standard-setting products. Quite a few ASUS products, which incorporate the latest technologies, became highlights at last month’s Computer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

This time around, the product I really like is the new eee Box PC EB1501. Too bad, though, Cynthia Yunita from ASUS Indonesia told me this model might never be available here.

I had reviewed the first version before and I was really enamored with it, but this reincarnation has a DVD drive (usually called ODD) and it is capable of pumping High Definition video (1080p) directly to a TV screen with the help of its NVIDIA Ion graphics subsystem. Unlike the early Intel Atom N270-based eee Box, this small and very quiet nettop runs on an Intel Atom Dual Core N330 running at 1.6 GHz.

What amazes me particularly is the variety of connections this tiny box provides. To cater to almost every need, the eee Box has HDMI, S/PDIF and RJ-45 for wired ethernet connection to a network, 802.11/n for wireless connections, D-Sub for a VGA monitor, eSata for additional storage, a card reader, audio ports and six USB ports.

The audio subsystem can be connected to a 5:1 speaker configuration for a great home theater experience. I guess the reason it is not going to be released in Indonesia is the hefty price we would have to pay for it.

Any ASUS store is also a gamer’s paradise. Mind you, gamers compete against each other in building the fastest computers with blazing graphics. Who can overclock their system the most? And when it comes to shopping for gaming components, Indonesian gamers seem to have dozens of money-growing trees in their backyards.

Even sixth-graders are familiar with the best components and willing and able to spend far more than professional aeronautics engineers or architects when it comes to buying super-duper computer components.

ASUS’ focus on this high-end, deep-pocket user segments is reflected in the formation of Republic of Gamers (ROG). In the ROG category, for example, we can find the Matrix GTX285 graphics subsystem and the RAMPAGE III Extreme motherboard.

Another very interesting product is the eee Keyboard. This is a rather new product category, comprising a full-size keyboard and a five-inch multi-touch screen in one single frame. It is actually a complete nettop PC with a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor. The video signal is sent via wireless HDMI, so we can display it on any monitor, including our LCD or LED TV monitor.

Talking about monitors, ASUS has long been making high-quality LCD screens. One of the latest products is the Designo MS series, which is supported at the back only by a ring stand. Tasteful style is just one small aspect of these monitors. More impressive is its 50,000:1 contrast ratio and 2 millisecond response time.

Meanwhile, ASUS O!Play Air HDP-R3 media player helps us collect media files in a wide range of formats from various sources such as wireless Network Attach Storage (NAS) and flash memory cards inserted into the card reader slot. Speaking of standards, we are now still using USB 2.0, which provides us with a data transfer rate of 480 megabytes per second. Work has been in progress to develop the USB 3.0 standard, which supports transfer speeds of up to 5 gigabytes per second.

Again, ASUS was the first component maker to incorporate support for USB 3.0 in several of its latest motherboards. Its P6X58D Premium motherboard was the first to be certified by the USB Implementation Forum (USB-IF).

Among the world’s suppliers of computers, Lenovo seems to have failed to consistently maintain its presence in Indonesia in the past.

There were some intense marketing efforts, including a number of roadshows, but then the brand would fall into the background in a market so largely dominated by the two giants Acer and Hewlett-Packard.

But in the past few years, Lenovo has done a lot of preparation to launch a fresh attack on emerging markets, including Indonesia. Their logistic infrastructure has been strengthened, their service network is being established across the islands, and new stores are being opened. One notable new store is the Think Store in Mangga Dua, where ThinkPad lovers will be able to check out the full range of the latest offerings.

The most impressive is perhaps the range of products that this computer vendor is bringing to Indonesia. Last week, after a full-day event with its channels, I had the opportunity to interview Chen Shaopeng, Lenovo’s senior VP, and Howie Lau How Sin, the company’s GM and executive director for ASEAN, as well as a few other executives. I also had the chance to see and get my hands on some of the new products, which were either launched recently or were showcased as a soon-to-be-released product.

Here are the scoops: First, there was S10-3t, a netbook that could be converted to a tablet PC. Some may not really find this model and its sibling, the S10-3, overtly exciting, but both have great features such as VeriFace to replace the security password, location tool Maplife and instant-on that allows us to start working just seconds after we power the computer up. By the way, both of these Intel Atom N470 netbooks come with a whopping 320-GB hard disk.

And then there was the Skylight Smartbook that was designed quite tastefully. While most notebooks have four square corners, this one has rounded corners at the palm-rest. To be officially launched in April, this very light gadget can be viewed as a large smartphone. The casing is typical Lenovo, strong and sturdy.

And then there is the new ThinkPad Edge Series with a black, red or white top. ThinkPad fanatics, me included, may find this a bit hard to accept, as we always expect the great notebook lines to come in only box-like black casing.

The Edge Series is meant for the SMB segment. Too bad, some of the ThinkPad features that I adore, such as the enlarged Escape and Backspace keys, are not found in the Edge Series. But Lenovo promises that besides these, the notebooks will still share the legendary durability and reliability of earlier ThinkPads. This includes a spill-resistant keyboard, which now has a contemporary design.

One thing I love about the design of the new series is the glowing red dot on the ThinkPad logo. It tells us that the notebook is working. Lenovo has gotten rid of unnecessary indicators such as the one that tells us the hard disk is spinning. While we will not find the ThinkLight on the Edge Series, there is already a model that comes with a backlit keyboard.

I guess the freshest technology idea is found in the hybrid model, the IdeaPad U1. It can be viewed as one notebook with two processors, two batteries and two operating systems. If we want a tablet PC, we can remove the multi-touch screen from its shell. The tablet PC uses an ARM processor and runs a customized Skylight OS. If we want a notebook, just insert the tablet back into its shell and we have an Intel notebook with Windows OS. Not surprisingly, Lenovo won an award for this unique design during last January’s annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

What about the data? Not to worry, I was told. The two computers can be synced easily. Whatever we create on the tablet can be accessed by the full-featured notebook. The hybrid is a bit thicker and heavier than the mainstream thin and light category, but, hey, it is two computers in one. The highly glossy, red finish looks great and feels nice, too.

And there are the all-in-ones, which now have become a preferred choice compared with the box and monitor type. The all-in-one, which they call IdeaCenter, is somewhat like the iMac, in which the CPU is placed right behind the monitor or in the base. Lenovo has a series for home consumers and another for commercial users. The IdeaCenter A300 claims to be the thinnest all-in-one in the industry today, and has a 21.5-inch full-HD screen.

There were also Android-based smartphones on showcase, too. They were the first smartphones from Lenovo. One model that I liked was almost like the hybrid notebook. If we do not need the keypad, we can just take the screen part out of its shell and it becomes a touchscreen smartphone.

If we want to use the keypad — and I always want it — just place the screen back into the shell and we will have a keypad-equipped smartphone. The keypad also serves as a protective case. Another model, which I did not get to see, had a sliding keypad.

Lenovo now has around 4.3 percent of the Indonesian market, and it is aiming for 10 percent market share. One crucial question is how Lenovo is going to achieve it amid the price wars with Acer and
HP as the market leaders, and while the general image is that Lenovo has is priced slightly higher than the others.

They are aware of the situation, and therefore their answer to this is to bring a full range of products, from the highly affordable value-line to the top end such as the dual-screen ThinkPad W700ds.

Samsung S7550 Blue Earth : Save Green, Use Blue

The Samsung Blue Earth S7550 is created with environmental protection in mind. The phone body and packaging are both made from recycled materials and the device features a solar panel that extends its battery life. Unlike most similar devices, this is not all about it. The phone features a 3-inch touch sensitive screen, TouchWiz interface and a set of quite decent functions to make it an appealing handset for the wide public.

The Samsung Blue Earth S7550 comes packed in a box made from recycled materials, but that´s not all, since that´s what the handset itself is made of. The manufacturer says plastic in its body is made of recycled water bottles. Anyway, we can definitely say the origin of its materials has nothing to do with its great overall feel. Moreover, no substances that can be defined as environmentally harmful have been used in its production. The Blue Earth comes with a nice, appealing design and the mystic blue color of its front side will certainly make it distinguishable in the handset crowd.

The 3-inch screen utilizes capacitive technology and shows great promise in terms of sensitivity. Our prototype has an unfaltering affection for fingerprints, but frankly, we have seen worse.

The interestingly shaped send and end keys are located just below the display, but neither of them is backlit so to cut down on power consumption. The “back” key is in between, the volume rocker is on the left hand side of the Samsung Blue Earth S7550, while both display lock and camera shutter are on the opposite. Samsung considered it fitting to equip the phone with an all-in-one microUSB port that allows connecting the phone to a computer, charging it or plugging in a pair of headphones.

You might even miss the 3-megapixel camera on the back, since the solar panels taking up the better part of the back panel will probably be the first thing to fix your eyes on. They are a stronger reminder of the ecological orientation of the device than a large inscription saying “Eco” would have been. At least they will provide you with a decent reason to brag about advanced technologies and stuff. The whole idea of integrating an alternative power source and doing it in such a cool way is awesome. We just hope the solar panel will contribute to an extended battery life on a single charge. Whether or not this is the case indeed will become clear in a future review of a retail unit.

The Samsung Genio Slide B5310 - Looking And Feeling Smart

There's every reason to rejoice in the arrival of the new Samsung Genio Slide B5310,especially among the youthful markets wanting a full feature handsets with the look and feel of a smartphone but without its hefty price tag.It's remarkable for creating a new genre in mobile phones as it combines smartphone look and feel with full feature versatility in an affordable package. Samsung faces little competition here, except from its own Genio or Corby line or the few low-end but still expensive smartphones in the market.

The Genio Slide has been rebranded by its exclusive dealer in the UK, Vodafone. Better than Many Low-End Smartphones

The Genio Slide is a nod to smartphone features but only in the aesthetics department, sporting a full-QWERTY side sliding exterior measuring a hefty 105 x 56.8 x 15.7mm and weighing 135 grams but is just a feature phone beneath.

It's your basic quad band GSM (/850/900/1800/1900) with GPRS/EDGE data connectivity on 2G and a dual band 3G UMTS (900.1200) with HSDPA/HSUPA for fast internet surfing and downloading. You also have WiFi 802.11b/g for surfing in hotspots. This high speed surfing feature serves its instant access to social networking sites right from the widgets on the homescreen.

You get fast updates to your Facebook or Twitter accounts. There's also Bluetooth 2.1 for wireless data synching with other Bluetooth devices. It also supports microUSB 2.0 for wired local data synching.

There's a smallish 2.8 inch resistive touchscreen display with QVGA resolution that is sure to dismay seasoned smartphone users accustomed to seeing capacitive wide-VGA screens but for most people, its modest display is good enough, especially with its brilliant 16 million colour depth.

Imaging is also mediocre with a 3-mgapixel fixed focus camera without LED flash and a mere 15fps QVGA video recording. But it makes up with some nice features like face detection and geo-tagging from its built-in GPS receiver. Yes, it has a GPS receiver.

Multimedia gets served with the usual capable media players that support the popular audio and video file formats. On top of that, it supports DivX as well. You get stereo FM and a listening choice between wired regular headphones with its 3.5mm jack or wireless stereo earphones with its Bluetooth A2DP support or.

Internal memory is next to useless with a mere 150 MB but there's microSD slot for external memory expansion for up to 16 GB. Lastly, you have up to 8 hours of talk time on 2G and up to 560 hours of standby time with its 960 mAh lithium-polymer battery when fully charged.

Toshiba realizes that aesthetics should be considered when designing a netbook. The Sable Brown cover (also available in Royal Blue, Pink Posh, and Frost White) is decorated with raised horizontal lines. Combined with, elegant shiny brass hinges (with the power button lights up in the middle), it was a good fit with a silver finish on the deck below to look professional as a whole.

At 10.4 X 7.6 X 1.3 cm, with the NB205 is quite compact. In addition, this netbook standard six-cell battery juts out from the back of the system. Weighing 2.8 pounds by itself, with NB205 and incoming AC adapter 3.4 kilograms, and do not put much strain on our shoulders as we walked home.

The touchpad on the NB205 is one of the best we have used on a netbook. The 3.1 x 1.6-inch pad is the largest one we’ve seen in the 10-inch class, and it’s smooth finish makes it easy to navigate the desktop. Its two dedicated right and left mouse buttons are comfortable and far from stiff.

Ports

The Toshiba mini NB205 has the standard set of ports we’ve come to expect from netbooks, but with a slight twist: two USB ports and a Kensington lock adorn the right side; a VGA-out, audio in/out, Ethernet, and a third USB are mounted on the left. That third USB port is enabled with Toshiba’s Sleep-and-Charge technology, which provides power to connected devices (such as smart phones) when the system is off. A 3-in-1 memory card reader sits along the front lip.

The NB205’s 10.1-inch, 1024 x 600-pixel resolution LED-backlit display is just the right amount of glossy. Watching a Daily Show clip on Hulu.com was bright, and colors were not at all muted. Tilting the screen back to its 45-degree maximum didn’t cause too much distracting glare, and we had no problem positioning the notebook in bed to watch a YouTube clip.

Sturdy Yet Sexy Samsung Monte Bar C3200

Do you love the wedge '“ shaped design in phones, giving it a sexy line and making them easy to hold? Do you like toting with a gadget with flashy colors that attract attention? Then, the Samsung Monte Bar C3200 might catch your fancy. It is yet another addition to Samsung's affordable line of mobile phones that is loaded with limited features but does the job of a regular phone at the least.

It does look pretty good with its orange sides and black frame, common to many Samsung phones. The orange line is done subtly giving it a more sexy appeal despite being flashy. It is also very light, at only 77 grams in weight. It measures 112 x 47 x 13 mm. And it does not only look sexy. It is sturdy as well. It's been ruggedised a little, though not to the extent of getting an IP 34 certification.

Minimal Features
The phone sports a basic 2 inch screen with keypads that are easy to use with the large navigation key at the centre. The screen is quite small but it will work for short messaging purposes. It is also stuffed with minimal features such as the 2 mega pixel camera that is also capable of video capture. It has, however, limited resolution at only 176 x 144 pixel at 15 frames per second. So, you might have to stick to still photography with this mobile phone.

The battery is 960 mAh and can provide up to 8 hours of talktime and 21 days of standby. This is pretty decent given the slim physical make up. As a mid-range phone, do not expect 3G or Wi-Fi capability. It is equipped with a web browser but you will have to make do with the tiny screen when viewing the web.
Internal memory is minimal only 40 MB. To supplement memory and storage space, it has a micro SD slot that lets you upgrade up to 8 GB.

Music
The audio playback is something that is on the bright side. It is complemented with a FM radio capability and a 3.5 mm audio socket. It is equipped with Digital Natural Sound Engine so sound quality is expected to be very good. In addition, it comes with Bluetooth 2.1 and USB 2.0 connectivity. When upgraded, you can actually store audio files on your phone and with the USB connectivity, you can easily transfer files from your PC to your phone and vice versa.

Affordability
Another upside in this release is the price. It is expected to be released to entry level prepaid so it should not cost much. There is no indication yet from Samsung as to the price but it is expected to be on the range of a hundred to a hundred and fifty pounds, just like other mid-range phones.
So, if you are looking for a cheap yet sturdy phone, and provides optimal audio '“ based entertainment, the Samsung Monte Bar C3200 may be the right phone for you.

Nokia 6700 Gold : Luxury Cell Phone

Nokia Cell Phones has gone, with one phone at least, the way of targeting on a certain group with their new 6700 plated in 18-carat gold. While the majority of cell phone companies to date have been focused on revving up their best smartphones for the market some companies are also trying their luck with niche and demographic specific phones, targeting certain groups rather than the general population. Both tactics have been successful in keeping the companies competitive in an ever--widening market and both are undoubtedly helpful in making companies distinct.

While it is known as a luxury phone the people at Nokia were very savvy in giving more than just looks. They truly delivered and it seems as though that will pay tremendous dividends for them.

What is so nice about this and other phones coming out today is that developers find new, exciting and creative ways to make phones stand out while never shying away nor neglecting some of the basic functions and necessities that people have come to expect in a cell phone -- that is cell phone call quality, coverage, and the likes. And that is of utmost importance today because one cannot make a cell phone that has the richest feature set to date then neglect call quality and expect the phone to be a hit. It simply does not work in that manner.
