Dutch designer Willem Heeffer used 334 recycled cans to create a series of luminous upcycled chandeliers and furnishings for Top Chef Hans Välimäki’s new Midhill American diner in Helsinki, Finland. Heeffer collected the tins from local restaurants, cleaned them, and then transformed them into fork and knife holders, bar lights, a floor-to-ceiling storage display and three chandeliers. The chandeliers are made from 21 Heinz Beanz classic cans each. The lamps fit perfectly into the interior designed by Martina Rosenqvist and Vera Öller, who used old corrugated roof panels to clad the bars. The single Heinz Beanz can that started it all is for sale at Willem Heeffer‘s website.

New research suggests that people with right wing views are less likely to buy light bulbs that are labeled as “pro-environment” due to the politicized nature of the carbon debate in the United States. In a study published last month in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Dena Gromet of Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania found that consumers’ purchasing decisions are divided along party lines.

After weeks of submissions and an intense week of online voting, we’re excited to finally announce the two winners of Inhabitat’s Lighten Up! Lighting Design Competition. We received hundreds of entries featuring projects that employ LEDs in innovative and interesting ways, ranging from a colorful art installation that reacts to changing light to a restaurant donning beautiful ceiling lamps to a research campus adorned with LED back-lit wood walls. We narrowed all the entries we received down to just 30 finalists, and then left it up to Inhabitat readers to decide which two designs were most deserving of $1000 prizes from Elemental LED. Most plastics can be endlessly recycled without losing their indestructibility. But instead of being reused, the majority of plastics will end up as one-time-use products, finding their end as pollutants on land or in our oceans. Save Our Soup is Dutch designer David Graas’ colorful, speckled collection of recycled plastic lamps that have been created with then intent of diverting plastics from the Pacific Garbage Patch, or “soup”.

‘Just Desserts’ is a colorful cluster of glass lights made from recycled dessert bowls. UK-based designer Jay Watson created this intriguing lighting array by stringing up traditional glass bowls sourced from flea markets and second-hand shops. The lamps are set to make their official debut at Interiors LDN this May in London.

It all started three years ago with a funky felt lounger featuring a cushion made from rolled felt that Brooklyn-based design studio Lamacek unveiled at BLKYN Designs 2010. Then, last year, Lamacek founder Connie Lam expanded her line of felt furnishings to include small table pads that can be used as trivets and larger wall clusters. Lamacek is back at BKLYN Designs again this year with a wide range of products made from bundled pieces of rolled-up felt, and word on the street is that she also takes custom orders.

One of the most interesting designs on display at BKLYN Designs this week is Bower‘s Polaris lamp, and yesterday Inhabitat’s New York correspondents were able to view it in person. According to Bower, the lamp is made from solid pieces of scrap wood. Magnets have been embedded in several faces on the geodesic lamp,  allowing users to attach it to any magnetic surface. We caught up with Adam Frank at BKLYN Designs this week, and we had a chance to check out his latest design, the LUCID Mirror. The mirror functions just like a typical reflective sheet of glass, but it also has a 3D image of illuminated clouds floating at the top. The LUCID mirror features a dimmer on the frame that allows users to control the brightness of an LED bulb that illuminates a projection of floating clouds. Vote for Frank and his LUCID Mirror in the BKLYN Designs Editor’s Choice Awards.

The World Lamp is a new shop light that pairs energy-efficient LEDs with a clever collapsible design that packs flat to ship and can be easily assembled once it arrives. The World Lamp uses about half the energy of a conventional 4’ fluorescent shop light, and it weighs less than 2.5 lbs. The lamp’s body is made of lightweight recycled material, and it can be either hung from the ceiling or stood up vertically. If you’re a fan of this project you can support it on Kickstarter here!
