Strawberry Energy recently unveiled a new solar powered park in Belgrade that invites visitors to charge their mobile devices using the power of the sun. Designed by Tamara Švonja and Vojin Stojadinović, Strawberry Tree Flow was created with the help of the City of Belgrade and Mikser organization. The design team says: “Elements are connected by the energy which is visually presented with the pipes holding all modular elements, and through which solar energy flows. It [invites] visitors to explore, track and find a place where solar energy comes to him/her.”

A new free iPad app is taking an iconic vision of sustainable cities and making it accessible to millions of tablet users in an interactive format. The Harvard Graduate School of Design has released an Ecological Urbanism app that provides access to the content of its 2010 book Ecological Urbanism, edited by Mohsen Mostafavi and Gareth Doherty. The new app provides a way into not only the original content of Ecological Urbanism but also into the increasing volume of research and discourse that the book has stimulated since its publication.

Under the Canopy is a low-impact and sustainable pavilion designed and built for the National Trust’s Dunham Massey Gardens. Conceived by students from the Manchester School of Architecture, the pavilion is composed of three lightweight arch structures that create a gentle focal point for the surrounding canopy of trees. Located in the heart of a conservation garden, the designers aimed to demonstrate the beauty of sustainable design. The frames are assembled from a flat pack kit of parts that are tessellated onto locally sourced FSC plywood sheets and fixed together off site. This minimizes material wastage and results in a light and open space that maximizes light in the enclosed surroundings. With the generous support of wood donors, ‘Under the Canopy’ was completed for under £300, and stands as an exemplar for what can be achieved with a low budget and an environmentally friendly agenda.

As Hurricane Sandy demonstrated, rising sea levels, combined with increasingly powerful storms, can be devastating for New York City. While relief efforts continue in many parts of NYC, the storm has many architects thinking about how to better protect the city from future storms. Tingwei Xu and Xie Zhang, a pair of architecture students from the University of Pennsylvania, have developed a proposal to build an elaborate lattice work bib on the shoreline of downtown Manhattan with an extensive membrane system that would protect  buildings from flooding.

As the climate changes and sea levels rise, cities that were previously thought to be relatively safe are looking more and more vulnerable — just ask anyone in New York who lived through Hurricane Sandy. Last year, a group of architecture firms united to tackle these issues with innovative green design. Instead of calling for the installation of giant Rotterdam-style floodgates, the designers called for more ”soft infrastructure,” which involves using natural resources like coastal marshlands and building more sustainable infrastructure like green roofs.

The Linear Park will wind through the Embassy Gardens housing development from Vauxhall to the Battersea Power Station. Residents will be able to open their doors right onto the meandering park, which Director of Camlins Huw Morgan calls, “a new London green: a fusion of enclosed garden squares, open green commons and majestic tree-lined streets.” There will be common areas of the park designed to attract visitors and build a sense of community for London’s Southbank.

The Linear Park is more like a “ground line” according to Morgan, and it’s meant to “connect city to park, park to people and people to community.” The site of the park is currently occupied by a number of industrial outlets, depots and the New Covent Garden Market and it’s in dire need to revitalization. The park is due to open to the public in 2014, but it won’t realize its full potential until the Embassy Gardens housing development is complete in 2015.

Embassy Gardens will boast 2000 new homes, a vibrant mix of bars and restaurants and 130,000 square feet of retail when complete. Nine Elms, the wider revitalization zone, is planned to accommodate a whopping 16,000 new homes. Farrell notes that this remarkable new redevelopment in central London is “quite possibly the last time the capital will see the creation of such a completely new district, built where none existed before.”
