So let’s take a look at what our options actually are if we want to disable the admin bar.

Existing Options

It can be disabled it on a per-user basis by navigating to Users > Your Profile > Show Admin Bar and unchecking the option when viewing site.

This can be done on any user profile by the admin or the user can set this themselves on their own profile page.

Code Solutions

Of course, disabling the admin bar on a per-user basis doesn’t quite cut it if you want to have global control of how and when it displays. In that case, there are various code solutions that you can implement.

Globally Disable The WordPress Admin Bar

The simplest way to disable the bar across your entire site is to simply add the following code snipped to your theme’s functions.php file.

show_admin_bar(false);

Disable The WordPress Admin Bar For Specific Requests

It is also possible to disable the admin for specific page requests. Say you wanted to have an alternative way of viewing the page for demo purposes, you could add the following code to your theme’s functions.php file.

if ( isset($_GET['bar']) && 'no' == $_GET['bar'] )
add_filter( 'show_admin_bar', '__return_false' );

This would then allow you to view the page by going to yoursite.com/?bar=no and you would see the page minus the admin bar.

Disable The WordPress Admin Bar For Specific Users

You can  disable the admin bar and the admin bar preferences for a specific user by adding the following to your theme’s functions.php file:

It’s also easy to the complete reverse of the above and show the admin bar and its preferences to only one user, thus disabling it for everyone else. To do that, you would simply change

to

if ( 2 != get_current_user_id() )

If you need to hide/show the admin bar for specific user levels you can use the following code:

Edit The WordPress Admin Bar Menu Items

It is also possible to add or remove new menu items in the admin bar. Say you want to remove the ‘Comments’ link from the admin bar, or add a new link to Add New Media under the ‘Add New’ section, we can do something like this:
