My German professor in college exposed us to quite a bit of poetry over the years, and I loved most of it. I thought I would share one of my favorites with you today (along with what translation I can do after this long without using the language). This was written during World War II, I believe.

Ich möchte ein Bild sein,
sehr alt und sehr teuer.
Wenn dann ein Krieg ist
und lang kein Sieg ist,
dann schützt man mich
vor Bomben und Feuer.

Child’s Wish

I wish I were a painting,
Very old and expensive.
Then when there’s a war
And for a long time no end,
Then men will shield me
From bombs and fire.

Just wanted to drop in and give a bit of an update on what I’ve been up to in the last month or two.

Finally took my camera down to our beach. I love the shallow depth of field.

Pretending I know how to use a white balance card!

Lauren took her sister's senior photos and I came along as backup photographer (read: gopher)

I think I might have to do a series of signs. Just so many good-looking ones out there.

I watched gas prices rise and then fall again.

Good morning, world! Mornings around dawn feel amazing, if I'm awake and outside for them.

Homemade chicken tortilla soup, by yours truly. Yes, it was amazing.

I made this sketch of George Bernard Shaw last summer and never got around to posting it until now. It’s based on this image of him. I see lots of places to improve my style, but I still really like it.

Our move is (finally) mostly finished. I only yesterday got my PC set up again, and it just seemed masochistic to try updating blogs from a netbook.

In other good news, for my birthday I got a Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch graphics tablet. I can tell it will take a lot of practice to do anything useful with it, but at least it works well enough for rotoscoping; it’s a definite improvement over my trackball for that.

Review – Sustainable Earth Sugarcane-Based Notebook

My first full review! I’m so excited. I wrote the review on Friday, but I trust you won’t begrudge me the slight delay in posting it. I doubt the notebooks today are substantially different than those from three days ago. Also, I forgot to mention this in the review itself, but it was written with a Parker 45 Medium nib loaded with Noodler’s Bulletproof Black ink.

It’s worth pointing out the show-through you get. It doesn’t make the writing any less legible, though — I have been writing on both sides of each sheet without trouble.
