This year’s Vintage Surf Meet has moved from it location above Lusty Glaze to Fistral Beach, Newquay, Cornwall. Things get under way from 10:30 and entry is free. There will be vintage surfboards to show, swap, sell and buy, plus surfing related memorabilia.

The event appears to have been expanded somewhat this year now being billed as a “Retro Surf Day” with a vintage surfboard rally, Classic VW Show and Shine, as well as a “retro” surf contest. A slide show from surf photographer Alex Williams will also be taking place on a large screen in the Fistral Beach Bar.

These are issues two through six of British Surfer. Issue one is the Holy Grail of UK surf magazine collecting!

British Surfer was started by guys in Swansea in the late sixties, then Rod Sumpter was asked to edit further issues, so it moved to Newquay. Rod’s then girlfriend, did most of the legwork though. Only six were produced in total. Similar copies to these I’ve seen were on eBay and sold for about £300!

Many times the tides don’t coincide
and you are torn between.
What do you do?
If you never, never go, you know?
If you never, never stay?
Can you fulfill that promise?

The way of a world so few know

“You don’t have to be a surfer to fall in love with inkydeep’s amazingly beautiful tee shirts. They are high quality, the softest organic, gorgeously unusual colours and the icing on the cake is that they don’t have those huge logos that shout out at you.

I’ve bought about half a dozen of these tees for relatives aged between 17 and 40 and I know that they are going to love them and want to wear them till they fall apart.

The stuff was delivered to me super-fast and arrived beautifully packed with inkydeep stickers, cards and printed brown bags.

Perfect presents!

Newquay Surfing Competition Posters by Graham Looker.

Being born in Oxford didn’t exactly predetermine me being a Surfer.

However, having got my hands (and feet!) on a board in Newquay whilst on my holidays in 1966, that’s what I became. I got the bug, big time!

By 1970, I had surfed most places in the ‘lower half’ of England and nearly all of Wales. I’d been to Jersey twice, and had driven the old hippy route through France, Spain and into Morocco, reaching Marrakesh with two girls for company.

But by then I’d had enough! Enough that is of travelling every weekend to some surf spot miles away, so I quit my well-paid draughtsman’s job with its excellent prospects and headed West, to Newquay and to take up a position as night porter in a hotel which was about as near to the surf as its possible for a hotel to be.

The rest, as they say, is history. I still live near Surf-City, currently have two boards in my quiver, and still do photography (a hobby I inherited from my Dad).

So, if my maths is correct, this is my forty-sixth year as a surfer. During all these years, I’ve had another hobby too. I have amassed a large amount of surf memorabilia.

I never set out to be a collector, I just never threw anything away (a trait I inherited from my mother). Consequently, I have magazines, competition posters, competition programmes and all sorts of odds and ends. No boards though (I wish!), unfortunately we just haven’t got the room.

You may see bits of my collection on inkydeep’s blog now and again, I hope you enjoy them.

This song demands volume!

The Guardian 22 January 2013;
“When it was time for John Grant to record the follow-up to his acclaimed debut album, The Queen of Denmark, many assumed he would return to Texas to record once again with members of Midlake. Instead, having recently visited Iceland for the Airwaves festival he decided to explore the country some more, making 80s synthpop-influenced tracks with Biggi Veira from Icelandic dance pioneers, Gus Gus.

One of the songs they collaborated on is the album’s title track, Pale Green Ghosts, which was influenced by the long car journeys Grant used to take to clear his head. “I’d take the I-25 between Denver and Boulder, which was lined with all these Russian olive trees, which are the pale green ghosts of the title: they have these tiny leaves with silver on the back, which glow in the moonlight,” he explains. “The song is about wanting to get out of a small town, to go out into the world and become someone and make my mark.”

Side panel detail – Mermaid Chair, Zennor Church

“But why have a mermaid in church?

Before the Christian era mermaids were one of the symbols for Aphrodite, goddess of the sea and of love. In one hand she held a quince (love apple) and in the other a comb. Later the quince was changed to a mirror, symbol of vanity and heartlessness.

In the middle ages, when Cornish mystery plays were performed, the mermaid was used as a symbol to explain the two natures of Christ. She was both human and fish, He was both Man and God.

Mermaid frescoes are found in other Cornish churches – Breage, Poughill and Altarnun – but Zennor is the only one with a carving.

The mermaid reminds us that St. Senara also came by sea and founded a church at Zennor more than 1400 years ago”.

I recently received an email highlighting a great infographic (published on the Education Database Online blog) on the subject of plastic recycling, or actually the lack of recycling. The infographic highlights the detrimental effects of plastic and how recycling can make a difference.

From the EDO blog post; “In today’s consumer world, plastic is everywhere—from plentiful stores of bottled water to disposable plasticware to the containers that hold our store-bought food. It seems like you can’t go out shopping without running into a good deal of plastic. And while this material is strong, reliable, and undoubtedly useful, we also may have way too much of the stuff that isn’t being reused. Recycling plastic uses much less energy than creating new plastic, and it conserves our valuable resources. Despite this, however, only about a third of our material that could be recycled actually is.

Among younger generations, the problem of our over consumption of plastic has been prevalent for as long as some can remember, and yet little has changed or progressed in alleviating the problem. Statistically, people in the Millennial generation (today’s high schoolers, college students, and young adults) are much less likely to properly recycle plastic and other materials than those in older generations.

If you’re of student or Millennial age, take a look at the following infographic—the reality is that younger generations need to start getting serious about recycling, or the future will be robbed of some very valuable resources.”

From Allison who created the graphic; “The primary goal with these pieces is to be able to make a connection between visualization and learning. In other words, our hope is to be able to create informative and interesting resources for the greater online community”.
