My first Hip-Hop memories were stuck on some low quality tapes. I can specially remember about the ones, among others, which made me discovering this stream : Public Enemy, the french compilation Rapattitude and the first Beastie Boys album Licensed to Ill. At first I was not so much into the sound of those Brooklyn guys but I was quite fascinated. It wasn’t until the second album Paul’s Boutique and the following Check Your Head that I really get caught. Those funky sample and distorted flow were matching so much with all the hardcore and skate things I was about at this period. So, like I guess lot of people, when I’ve learned the death of Adam Yauch aka MCA, it’s a bit of my youth which flew away…

I don’t know what will Mike D and Ad-Rock do in the future. Maybe they’ll turn the Beastie Boys page or they’ll keep going on but I would like to pay them a tribute in this special issue through this totally subjective playlist including all my favorite tracks. RIP Adam.

Jazz & Hip-Hop… What a mix ! Through the Brown & Shiny Facts series I try to pay tribute to the musicians and producers who made this magic happening. As usual, for each moods I’m sharing here it took me some time to find a cool name to those special blends. Let me explain the one we’re talking about today : Brown for the wood of the double bass, Shiny for the light’s reflection on the brass and Facts for the claims of angry MC’s. Talking about anger, special focus on two tracks of this selection. First one is the Brew Out extracted from the Shaolin Jazz project where you will hear that Miles Davis can rhyme with hardcore. Second one is the Soho‘s remix by Nirobi (aka Robert Luis, founder of the Tru Thoughts record label) which can be summarized in one word : Heavy !

In terms of dub, Osbourne Ruddock, aka King Tubby, helds up the royal place on the throne of the precursor, legendary and most creative producer ever. Before he was killed at home during a robbery, he has invented and developed most of the techniques of dub production. Reverb, delay, phaser… as a sound engineer he knows perfectly all those effects that allowed him to develop a personal and unique sound. Almost forgotten in Jamaica by the new generations, he is considered by many to be one of the greatest musicians of the second part of the 20th century, so… Respect to the King !

Addis Ababa and Kingston, the legendary capitals, always had special connections between them. Through his emperor, Hailé Sélassié, Ethiopia has for a long time represented an idealized vision of the jamaïcan’s african roots, particularly for the rastasfarians which see in the “neguss” the direct descendant of Salomon. Many caribbean will even move to Addid Ababa and Shashemene since 1950 in order to join this mythical and biblical land. Musically talking, this playlist could illustrate the meeting of those two strong musical identities. Unfortunately Prince Jammy has never produced Mulatu, but today… afro and ethio-jazz are inna dubby style !

I had already the same guilty feeling when I’ve previously posted le Coup Classique playlist. Why ? Well… It’s all about the “Lounge Effect”. You know what I mean, a considerable number of Electro / Trip-Hop tracks have been gathered on commercial compilation like “Hôtel Costes” and so on… Most of them are flavorless and it’s all about money… In fact it’s nearly the same thing when you see a TV Ad using one of your favorite artist for the soundtrack : you’re disappointed to see he will now be associated with shampoo or insurance.
