a snow meditation

Today I made a poppet (a magickal term for puppet) in the form of a lady made from snow. She was created from all of the elements — EARTH (twigs) + AIR (the idea) + WATER (snow) + animated with my life force with FIRE. She was (wo)man-made in my image, but ended up looking like some kind of bird-alien.

Seeing seagulls in a snowstorm made me think about hope and survival. They know what to do and haven’t lost touch with their instincts. They’re actually a lot closer to the earth than we are even though they fly high. In many cultures the word for “snowbird” means “Woman.”

Snowflakes — each one different, too many to count, amassing, crystallizing, melting into the ground. Just as there are many different ways of viewing the same event. Which version is the Truth?

I tried to take snowlady home with me but she was transient, here for a limited time just like we are. Better to spend our precious time here nourishing the earth than resenting the mess.

Purify the earth. Purify your body. Especially at this time of year, drink lots of water and sweat it out at the spa. Resist the urge to dry up (with alcohol and caffeine) your excess uncomfortable, yet powerful, potentially transformational emotions.

This is the story of Butterfly + Flower, Eagle + Alien, Snail + Amoeba. Each pair of creatures represents an aspect of the astrological weather affecting us now.

time for a revolution in our evolution

The Butterfly is the New Moon in Gemini. It’s late Spring, a safe time to go and flit about socially — our natural curiosity drawing us out of ourselves and into the world. There are so many different options (flowers) to explore and find out about, so many people to talk to and share with.

The Butterfly works well with the Eagle, both are flying creatures after all, at home in the air (the realm of ideas). The Eagle sees life from above from a higher, more objective, less personal plane. He sees our planet as one and that we are all connected.

The Eagle and the Alien represent our collective spiritual direction (North Node in Aquarius). The Alien and the Eagle are in communication with each other. The Eagle sees the future and knows that our situation could be radically transformed if we embraced higher (alien) technology, with the well-being of the entire world as the motivation. The Snail (Pluto in Capricorn) feels awkward in this scene. He remembers how long it took him to evolve from an Amoeba to a Snail — the long evolutionary road with it’s trials and tribulations. He doesn’t see an easy solution to the problems we face. From the snail’s point of view it will take awhile to restructure our reality to ensure survival. All of the flitting of the Butterfly seems superficial and wasteful to him. He’s skeptical and cynical, staying close to the ground, conservative and pragmatic.

The financial and personal crises that are occurring at an alarming rate of escalation have plunged many into a depression. determine your focus

Identify the main source of energy depletion in your life. When do you most feel dis-empowered, upset, exhausted, frustrated, tired? Take notice of physical addictions, habitual emotional reactions, difficulties with a particular person, unresolved family issues, and self-defeating thought forms.

It will be obvious — you know what bugs you! Pick the most persistent, burning issue you have going on right now as your focus.

what you will need

• A long (6-8 ft.) continuous piece of twine or ribbon (preferably black)
• Scissors
• 2 candles (preferably one black, the other white)
• An object representing your issue/focus (that you don’t mind throwing away) — for example, a picture of a person, image from a magazine, your written words on paper, a stone
• a disposable piece of cloth or small garbage bag to wrap the above items in (preferably black)

optional tools for enhancement

• a pillow to sit upon
• hypnotic music to get you in the mood (recommended: DroneZone via somafm.com)
• headphones to block out distractions
• Incense – Sage Smudge Stick or a Frankincense/Myrrh/Sandalwood blend or Copal
• Drink Peppermint Tea
• Dress in ritual clothing (again, preferably black)

Reserve 5 minutes or more each day for 3 consecutive days (preferably in the same place at the same time each day).

preparation

Establish a quiet time and place to perform this ritual. Make your peppermint tea. Set the tone by dimming the lights, lighting incense or turning on music.

set-up

Clear some space on the floor and layout your twine or ribbon in the shape of the infinity symbol (see left diagram). Place the candles on either side of the infinity symbol’s point of intersection (black on left, white on right).

Place the object you have chosen to represent your issue in the upper circle. Seat yourself in the lower circle (using a pillow if you have one). Have the garbage bag or black cloth behind you within your reach.

meditation [days 1 and 2 - understanding]

Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths and relax. When ready, open your eyes slowly and gaze softly upon the object of your focus. Imagine a stream of light following the shape of the infinity symbol, continuously circling around your object of focus, then you.

Allow any thoughts and feelings associated with your focus to arise without obsessing on them. Just notice and let them go.

Close your eyes while continuing to visualize the stream of light continuously swirling around the shape of the infinity symbol. Notice how your body feels and feel where you may be holding any tension. Breathe naturally.

When you are ready to come out of the meditation, bow slightly while sitting and thank yourself and the universe.

sever the connection and soar like an eagle

meditation [day 3 - cut it out!]

Meditate exactly as before, except now, each time you visualize the stream of light flowing over the intersection point of the infinity symbol, imagine it severing the connection between the two circles.

As before, let your thoughts and feelings arise, notice how your body feels, breathe. Begin to repeat the words “Sweet Release, Unhappiness Cease” either out-loud or in your mind.

When you feel the energy has reached a crescendo, take a hold of the scissors in one hand. Grasp the ribbon/twine at the intersection point and lift it to reach the area of your body where you feel the most tension. Cut the ribbon/twine at the intersection point while saying out loud “Sweet Release, Unhappiness Cease.”

Gather all of the ribbon/twine + the object of your focus and place in the black cloth/garbage bag. Blow out the candles. Bow, thank yourself and the universe.

As soon as possible, take the black cloth or garbage bag far away from your usual route to a dumpster. As you toss it into the dumpster, say “Sweet Release, Unhappiness Cease.” Stomp your feet on the ground three times. Say “It is Done.” Walk away and don’t look back.

The astrological weather of the month will be dominated by the conjunction (or the coming together) of the planets Jupiter, Chiron, and Neptune in the sign of Aquarius. What can we expect to be feeling? How can we dress for the weather?

We now spend more time at work and chatting with people online — relying less on a home, homeland, or religion to define who we are. The upside of this is that we now understand by personal experience that the whole world is our family. Instead of feeling cut off, it’s “love the one your with!”

A better world is being invented anew everyday in the wake of disaster. Why not participate in it’s re-creation?

The planet Pluto is going retrograde (backwards) in the sky from April 3 to September 11. Pluto is in the sign of Capricorn and has been since this whole “Recession” era began in November. Cut it Out!

This radical new perspective can only be realized if there is room to grow in a new direction. Take out the trash already! Bring on the new and untried. With the world in such a state of emergency, the time the Hermit (Virgo) needs to get to the top of the mountain is a luxury. We need something radical to heal ourselves and each other NOW! This is the voice of the anxious teenager who hasn’t completely let go of the childish(?) belief that miracles can happen.

The challenge of every full moon is to acknowledge opposing voices of the inner dialogue (your own “old man” and teenager) and work with each side constructively to resolve the tug-of-war. The old man by himself is just a dried-up, dead fossil. In order to make his perfect world livable and enjoyable, he needs the teenager to supply the juice — feelings, compassion, creativity, and un-jaded dreaming facility. The teenager without the old man’s direction could well run off into the night, creating a beautiful utopia (or a twisted nightmare) with little staying power.

Take time at this intense full moon to listen to both sides of your own personal dialogue. Recognize each longing has it’s wisdom and folly. Reconciling the best of your own opposing sides is the way to create peace in your personal life and peace on earth.

I posted this image of the Hanged Man tarot card because people have such a strong reaction to it — it’s SCARY. I have a hard time explaining to them that there’s actually a positive side to this card. Even though he is upside-down, it’s not all about being hung-up.

This is exactly the position that many of us find ourselves in when society is being turned on it’s head. After all of the valuables fall out of his pockets, there is still something left. If you don’t lose faith at the last-minute you might find out what that treasure really is.

In these challenging times, we need to be clever, like the cunningfolk or wise people of the past. Just as farmers do today, they utilized the power of the new moon to start projects and sow new seeds.

The Hanged Man doesn’t look like he’s quite ready to rise, get a move-on and start a bunch of new stuff. He looks rather spent. But he’s actually busy doing the prep work that forms the foundation of anything worth carrying out in the physical world. November begins with the inevitability of CHANGE forcing us to drop the fluff and focus on more relevant desires. Continuing is a collective confusion about where we’re all headed, resulting in a mixed bag of dreams, fantasies, and fears of what the future may bring.

Reaching its zenith on election day, the battle between cautious conservatism and compassionate change seems easy to see. This complex tug-of-war affects us all.
