This is who my second princess sleeps with!

Sleep.

That's what I woke up with on my mind.

If you've known me for a day or a decade, you know that I'm a pretty chillax kinda gal. Not too much ruffles my feathers. And half the time, my feathers are under a pile in an organized mess. Yes. I have never gravitated to the Type A personality types, but I married a semi-Type A guy. The kind who doesn't mind Spring Cleaning and prefers his dress shirts all facing the same direction. I still remember that fight from newlywed days.

"My shirts are facing each other," Hubs says one morning while getting ready for work.

"And??" I see no problem.

"That's not gonna work." At least that's what I remember him saying.

"If it's that important, do it yourself." That was me in my newbie married days when my mouth moved much faster than my brain. Not much has changed in that respect, but Hubs has changed. He doesn't expect me to hang his shirts, iron his shirts or even wash his shirts. Problem solved.

On Flight 6011 from New York to Dallas for my second ever writing conference. The plane hasn’t even left the runway and I feel a, shall we say, “Fortunately… Unfortunately” blog coming on. Ahhh, why not. If you insist…

Hannah decorated my suitcase for me! So I wouldn't lose it!

Fortunately, two days ago, I thought to prepare the girls for mommy being away for four sleeps, so sat with them on the couch and told them, “Remember when Mommy went to her writing conference last year and we did FaceTime to keep in touch?”

Unfortunately, my third princess chimed in, “Yeah. I remember how Sarah wouldn’t stop crying the whole time you were gone.” Not exactly how I wanted to begin this conversation.

Woke up this morning to find my first official piece of fiction published on-line, up and out there in cyber space, for any and all to read. Super excited and freaking out at the same time. What will the readers think? Will they love it? Hate it? Walk away unchanged? or Beg for more!! I hope the latter, because this short story I entered in the contest actually begins a book I'm working on, the first two chapters in fact.

I felt immediately humbled and immensely grateful for the Judge's generous and encouraging comments:

What Judge's said about "The Color of Tomorrow"

So what is this story all about, you ask?

In a world where everyone seeks worth and wealth, two sisters discover the one thing worth pursuing: freedom.

"The Color of Tomorrow" is a story about dreams and family, hope and sacrifice, growing up and first love.

When a hotel mogul recruits two sisters from India into a trafficking operation, their escape from poverty changes to the pursuit of freedom in a country not their own.

This is how the story starts…

[Note: This is part 3 of a week long of Tree House stories…]

When the dust of emotions settled and reality set in, Hubs and I both knew that we had no choice. The tree house had to be moved. It was the only chance of the Town removing the charges and the only way we could pursue a permit. But the question evaded us:

How EXACTLY do you move a tree house?

It's not like moving a piece of furniture, manageable with the help of a few flexed muscles and a dolly. The tree house has a tree going through it. And although it doesn't sit on a tree, our wooden castle is no dog house.

I had to beg these guys to take a two second break and pose for this pic!
And not everyone who helped is even in the picture!!

When we first moved into our little house in Locust Valley, we began to see little puddles of water in the basement every time it would rain severely. So Hubs and I drive over to Home Depot [thank God for those carts that look like cars for the girls!] to find a solution. At first we were going to break the ground in one corner and install a sump pump. But then a guy who had had a similar problem with his basement gives us different advice.

"If you want to truly waterproof your house, especially since you live on a hill, you should attack the real problem."

"Which is??"

His eyes twinkles with that spark that I've seen many a time with Home Depot employees. These guys, generally speaking, love to talk about a project, how to do it, and what supplies you'll need.

"Come with me."

Almost five years ago, hubby began dreaming about building a house. But not just any ordinary castle. His idea was to create a structure that would both invite and delight. A place our daughters could play in. And a home that they could share with their friends. A tree house.

So hubs did what all dads without Engineering degrees do when they want to build something. He drove to Home Depot, talked to a bunch of employees, each with his own idea of which tool will do the job, and then he bought two books on Tree Houses. And Hubby doesn't consider himself a reader.

Almost a year later, neighbors were asked and informed, consulted and queried. Everyone gave his idea two thumbs up and back to Home Depot Hubs went. To buy the first of many pre-cut pieces of pressure-treated wood to protect the developing structure from the elements of wind and rain and snow. Because he knew and we all knew, that this baby was not going to be finished in one day.
On Monday, hubs texted me. "Date night on Tuesday?"

"Sorry, I have something. How 'bout Thurs aft 7?" I replied.

"Sounds good."

So hubs and I went on a Movie Date last night. It's funny how some things you know about a person when you marry them. Some you discover. And some things change and evolve so what you thought you knew about your spouse surprises you. I think the combination keeps married life fresh and exciting, although stressful and confusing at times.

Somewhere along the last decade, Sun and I became movie junkies. But not just any movie. We both gravitate to what I like to call the Undercover Adventure. Movies that fall into this category include Mission Impossible, Enemy of the State, Lethal Weapon, Interpreter, and pretty much any movie with a character in the CIA, FBI or Secret Service. My personal favorite—in this line of fast-paced, framing the good guy, who's really the bad guy series—is the Bourne Trilogy. As a huge Matt Damon fan, I fell instantly in love with The Bourne Identity. The SuperHero with slightly more believable powers than, say, webs shooting out of your wrists, convinces me that this modern day Bionic Man [I know I'm dating myself here] might actually exist, and the government is just keeping him a secret. Okay, truth be told, I don't believe Jason Bourne is real. But…

Several months ago, I attended a school fundraiser at the last second to connect with local parents and staff and enjoy a much buzzed about event, the Parent’s Night Out. And because we had plans to travel the following morning, hubby was home packing when I walked into the Glen Cove's Soundview restaurant, alone.

In general, I don't have a problem going places by myself. I don't do it often, but I'm a chatty extrovert so I planned to enjoy the company of Locust Valley parents for a bit, then join hubs in tying up loose ends for our trip.

At the door, I spontaneously bought $20 worth of raffle tickets. When I approached the bags of gifts, I instinctively put two tickets here, two tickets there, and continued to distribute the arms length of tickets into as many prizes that sounded fun to win. Prizes included tickets to Broadway shows, Six Flags, Hershey Park, and even a month of free Pilate's lessons or something like that. There were a lot of options on the prize table, and my tickets only stretched so far. Then I joined a few friends for a drink.

So my fourth and final princess boarded the Big Yellow Bus today. She's off to her first day of Kindergarten. And I did what all good moms and dads do on that first day of school. I smiled. And breathed deeply. And held back the tears till her little legs ascended the steps and her little hand waved at record speed out the window she could barely see out of. I don't even know if she waved actually. I think she was too busy looking at her backpack on the floor. But her little friend Sienna waved. With a smile that said, "I'm ready world! Bring it on!"
I laugh out loud at hubby's question. "If you mean busy by sleeping. Several friends have asked if we took any pictures while we we visited Acadia National Park this summer. The sunrise and sunset pics on Cadillac mountain were some of my favorite moments, but Acadia is huge. We only had four full days, and explored the park by foot, bike and kayak, taking pictures that I believe only capture a glimpse of the incredible beauty that surrounded us. It certainly didn't hurt that we had four days of sunny, breezy, nearly bug-free adventures. And the one night I sat to stargaze, a brilliant comet sped across the sky, like the sprinkles on top of a perfect day.

Some things are worth waking up for… Cadillac Mountain, Acadia. Note the clouds on the ocean!

When a good friend offered to lend me a book on Acadia National Park [Thanks Caitlin!], I was thrilled. But our chaotic life allowed us one opportunity to pick it up: just as we began driving out of Locust Valley. We spun by her house and she drove up seconds later. She gave us one piece of advice on Acadia before we got back into the RV to officially start our summer vacation: "You have to try the Popovers at Jordan Pond." Um. Okay.

I think I'm the only member of my family that can read in a moving vehicle without getting nauseous. Thus for years, I was the designated Map Navigator. When our beloved GPS came along [a gift from two very special friends from our med school days: Thanks Andy and Linda!!] I thought I was finally relieved of my job. Unfortunately, the GPS, like every electronic toy out there, has the propensity to malfunction at the most unexpected moments. Like when you're supposed to take a major exit or else end up in Alaska. Yes. This is why hubby purchased not one, but two, road maps and atlases for those times when we need a second opinion, sort-a-speak.

Something happens when two people kiss. I'm not referring to your usual goosebumps inviting, butterfly acrobatics in the tummy, endorphin release. That's a given. If you're kissing someone you're attracted to. What I'm referring to is an invisible weaving of hearts that occurs while two sets of moist, charged lips touch.

In most memorable love stories, whether read on seen on Hollywood, the moment I anxiously await is the moment of the first kiss. So often it disappoints. But every once in awhile, the story nails it. Perfectly timed. Perfectly orchestrated. And perfectly executed.

When I was young, and the hormones kicked in, I started wondering, hmmm? Who will be my first kiss? When will I kiss a boy? How long should I wait till I kiss the boy I'm dating?

Like I mentioned in recent posts, one of our favorite aspects of summer music festivals is the chance to discover new bands and find up and coming music to add to our iPods! Isn't everyone looking for that next great song? Well, one night, while jamming to the main stage evening shows, one of the Security Volunteers who I've already introduced myself to says, "Hey, do you want me to get you an interview with the female singer of Epic Season?"

"Sure." Who is Epic Season? is really what I'm thinking. But I love meeting new people and what could it hurt? If anything, I hope it will help me to develop my journalism skills and also give my readers a fun and new way to learn about what's out there, musically speaking.

"You'll love them!" She assures me.

And she was right! Epic Season had their first real breakthrough at Soufest. Paul Colman on the Deeper Well Stage told them, "The only thing wrong is that I'm not producing you." How fun!!

So when the Friday dance party at Soulfest comes to a halting stop, because the floorboards below us are breaking, every fan, except maybe my sleeping five-year old, is jumping to their heart's delight to the mixing magic of Brad Dring, Lead Singer of New Zealand's own Rapture Ruckus. The misfortune lead to my fortune…because the show gets shut down, I land a nice long interview with Brad!! And we all dance our hearts out the next day, at the outdoor stage, where there is no limit to how much, how high, or how hard we can jump on the Gunstock grounds during their big show. And what a show it was! I personally think a buzz was created about RR and how they partied so hard, the walls nearly fell down. Next thing you know, everyone wants to hear them and see what all the RUCKUS is about. Well, here's a little glimpse into the life of Brad Dring, the man behind the voice. Enjoy...

Raj: Okay. We’re on. [Digital Camera this time. But not the best lighting for the video since the room was dim.] So you’re name is Brad?

Brad: Yeah. Brad Dring. D.R.I.N.G.

Raj: Okay, Great. Awesome. And you’re from New Zealand. All right. So just a fun question to start out with: what’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?

Brad: Oh. Umm. They have this flavor in New Zealand called “Hokey-Pokey.”

Brad Dring [Lead Singer of Rapture Ruckus]

starting up the ultimate dance party…
that got shut down when they [who are "they" anyway?]

reported the floor boards were breaking with all the fans

jumping. Hello? If they write "Dance Party" on the schedule,

don't they expect the fans to….um…dance?!? No joke.

Last summer, the night before we began our annual drive across the country to visit a National Park or two, hubby made a U-turn in our agenda and added a four day musical festival at the start of our vacation. In Wilmar, Minnesota. It was on the way, he reasoned. And it was, sort of. When I looked at the line-up of performing artists, I agreed that we didn't need to spend an entire two weeks in nature alone. We could have an outdoor music experience for four days and then move onto our hiking, biking, and kayaking activities.

But I was nervous about one detail. The crowds. What if I lost one of my princesses in a mosh pit. What if one of my nephews got lost coming back from the port-a-potties? What if there were so many fans, we'd be stuck way in the back, unable to see the stage?

Soulfest 2012 Day One

Tuesday evening marks the night before Soulfest 2012 begins. We stroll around the Gunstock Mountain Resort grounds, hoping to hear a little preview of tomorrow's bands and maybe even catch a glimpse of one of our favorite musicians. As we walk toward the main stage we bump into one of the Assistant Director's of Soulfest and her co-worker and get the inside scoop on some of the changes before the start of the festival.

We love Jars of Clay. "The lead singer had a heart attack."

"Oh no!" I feel bad for being silently disappointed.

He needs light since the tent with all the supplies is dark at 9:30PM. We are all equipped with headlamps so we offer to help.

Waking up at Gunstock Moutain Resort in New Hampshire for our first full day of vacation, all I can think is, where is the coffee? The 11:30PM arrival the night before which involved some not-so-nice words exchanged while the GPS evaded us, seasoned the RV air with the perfect ingredients for sweet dreams. Not. I went to bed, exhausted from packing the day before and my heart sinking for the weeks that lie ahead. If this is how we’re starting our vacation, angry and miscommunicating, I just want to quit now. Hide under the covers and wake up when it’s time to go home. That’s how I think when I feel desperate. Inadequate. Hopeless. And just genuinely messed up.

It was just a fight over directions, I try to convince myself. But under ever petty argument lies a deeper issue. When you’ve been married for more than a decade, you know each other too well to know when something is just a tif or a tip. As in the tip of the iceberg of abandoned issues. I tell him he doesn’t trust me. He tells me I don’t respect him. Tempers flare. Words fly. And in the small confines of the RV, every sound is heard. By everyone.
Returned from vacation to find my parents in my living room. They called while we were on route from Acadia National Park, and when your mom asks where your house key is, the first thought is "Yeah!" immediately followed by, "Yikes! Did I leave any dishes in the sink? Did I make my bed? Oh shnappity shnap! I think the clean laundry we didn't pack is still covering the living room carpet!" Sigh. What can you do?

I warned mom that the house was not perfect, and she just laughed. This is a good thing. There was a time when my spoons' drawer [where a fork or two slip into the spoons' slot while I'm sleeping] frazzled my mother. In fact, after one visit, I found all my spices in a totally different cabinet. The one Mom felt was more conducive to cooking. And she was right. She often is.

Writing to the rhythmic sounds of toilet flushing is both helpful and disturbing. Useful for moments when your sleep-deprived lids start to fall unbeknownst to your tapping fingers. Mentally jarring because you begin to dream that you’re trapped between a campground lavatory and three hunter green port-a-potties that are all ventilating in your direction like heat-seeking missiles. Ahhh. The joys and pains of finding the one free outlet in the middle of nature, and watching your electronics recharge next to the low hum of the Pepsi vending machine. If I describe one more outdoorsy detail, you might begin to think I found the Shangri-La where Gary Paulsen penned his first lines of The Hatchet. Not so my friends. I’m in New Hampshire’a Gunstock Mountain Resort. Paulsen’s story took place in Canada. But I did run into two Canucks the other day. Nicest people ever. Canadians that is. Just sayin...
We did a similar thing on the ten year anniversary of 9/11. We took the subway into Manhattan with our girls, had lunch, and played at a city park with New Yorkers. It made perfect sense to hubs. He wanted us to be close to those who were hurting, because we were hurting too. A decade later, and the memories of 9/11 still get me teared up. Hub's story of where he stood when the second tower came down is a memory that surfaces yearly every September. Sigh.

So he wanted to teach our girls to we continue to live. And if and when someone ever decides to attack NYC again, we're not going to sit inside our homes behind locked doors in a basement bunker. That's just not our style. Because if you live like that, you give fear power over you.

So these last few days have been a powerful *pun intended, reminder that electricity is highly useful. And highly missed when it doesn't come through.

Power outage situation #1 happened when we realized that the RV fridge and radio refuse to turn on. Hubby, being the Mr. Fix-it guy that he is, has been troubleshooting for the last week. His electrically-minded cousin and his electrical engineer father-in-law would be so proud. Or yell at him for trying things he's not trained for. The jury's still out on their reactions. They don't know. Yet.

Shout of to ALL who HELPED Build our Tree Castle Blog

It's raining in New York.

All week, my life has played out like a perfect storm. Full of lightening, thunder, sunshine breaking through the clouds and even a rainbow. Unfortunately, when the rain stops, the thunder subsides, and the clouds roll back, the damage is still there. And clean up is hard. Sometimes impossible.

Without going into great detail, this week I've dealt with family health care obstacles, paper work nightmares, countless hours on the phone with banks, my Blog Address expiring unexpectedly and a traffic ticket via those darn traffic light cameras. All when I went grocery shopping after the storm that wrecked Morgan Park in Glen Cove, the friendly Shop and Stop cashier rings up my bill.

"That'll be $66.66."

Gulp. Just glad there are four sixes and not three.

The guy behind me in line said something like, "And I thought I was having a rough day."

Balance Issues...

Day 99: Reporting

So thirteen days ago, I began Operation I Can Do THIS! And I vowed to do it for 112 days. Because my trainer extraordinaire and owner of Metaburn Fitness—Coach Rahz *Not to be confused with Raj, says, "If you do something consistently for 16 weeks, you'll see a real difference."

And that's what I'm looking for. These prego pounds that have clung to me for the last decade have gotsta go. I want to wear my sleeveless dresses and see a nice soft roller coaster effect going down my jiggle-free arms. And my butt. Plan to leave it behind. Pun intended folks. This is all kinds of serious. Finally, I'm *brace yourselves, 41 years old. Not getting any younger here. And if I don't kick this body into high gear now, menopause lurks around the next corner, just waiting to punch me in the face and tell me, it's too late. Have to beat her to the punch. Pun intended. Is that even a pun?
