Dream Journals: Your Built In Source Material.

What’s a dream to you?

There’s a school of thought that believes dreams are the mind’s way of interpreting its conditions and either planning ahead or simply making sense of the information at hand. I like that theory.

Whether you subscribe to it or not, dreams can often be fun and eye opening if you are lucky enough to remember them. Now I won’t go into heavy details on how you can train not only yourself to remember your dream but also take on a more active role by controlling them (lucid dreaming).

I will however, recommend that you do look it up. In this post, I will explain why you as a creative individual can benefit from such a skill to garner new material or gain clarity on current material.

I had a strange dream.

I had come across a couple of notable people in a bit of a bind and I had helped them with their situation and went on with my business. Things got weird from there. As I went about whatever errands I had been running in the dream, things seemed to be attracting negative attention. After a few twists & turns I had somehow ended up in a police chase that ended in the woods with me managing to elude capture and find what appeared to be an abandoned motor lodge occupied by the very same people I helped before. Apparently there was some sort of conspiracy at work and we were threats. I wanted out so this time they had to help me.

Then I woke up.

Ordinarily, these sorts of dreams fade away near immediately depending on how abruptly I wake up. On the rare occasions that they stick, I keep some paper and a writing utensil nearby. When that’s not available, I do my best to pound out some notes on the tiny keys of my blackberry. The main point to all of this is that I’m writing as much as possible down about a fleeting memory. From there I try to catalog it so I can return to it in case I need more material to explore.

The material from the dream helped in multiple ways, my main graphic novel projects are back in slow / early development and I needed something to push some plot elements in the right direction. This was the sort of material that brought about a solution and would also boost another idea for a script with a similar flavor weeks later.

Needless to say, there’s now more material generated from a simple dream I recalled than perhaps what I had generated in the last few brain storming sessions.

That’s not all!

The benefits from being able to recall specific details: feelings, sounds, textures, colors (dreams are said to be in B&W but I get colors too), lead to opportunities to translate it over into other mediums where the possibilities multiply beyond measure.

Tips

Music / Sounds

Try neutral music – classical music, smooth instrumentals, new age, chill out, etc – for those of you that like to sleep to something in the background you’ll want to choose something neutral is you’re going to try the lucid aspects, mostly because words & certain sounds can creep into dreams and take them out of the natural flow of things.

Sounds of nature – sound therapy, nature sounds, relaxation sounds – these often work as well, try rainymood.com if you’re looking for something free.

Temperature

Keep it “just right” – having it too hot or too cold can also tamper with the practice, so once you find that feeling try to reproduce it as often as you can.

Timing

Be consistent with your sleep patterns! Unfortunately for someone like me that’s also tough to pull off, I’m a notorious night owl and have odd sleep patterns as a result of working a nearly 24 hr work schedule. If you can do this, you’ll be able to enter into the right sleep state at relatively the same time of night every time, which is something your body will thank you for!

Meditation / Relaxation

Find your center, the more relaxed you are before finally drifting off to sleep the better, the dreams come easier and last a little longer in the mind once you awaken.

Avoid

Eating heavy food or drinking liquids before bed – that late night bathroom run throws you off.

Forcing it - it’ll happen when it happens, patience is key.

Abrasive noise – don’t listen to anything with rough sounds or jarring noises it will disrupt your sleeping pattern! Believe it or not, but there are even some classical songs that can do this to you.

Working on the computer, playing games or anything thought intensive – too much thinking can lead to too little sleeping.

So there you are, something so easy you can do it in your sleep.

Yet it’s powerful enough to power most of your projects, so to those that say dreamers do nothing but get some sleep, TAKE THAT!
