FIL Distributes Iroquois' Blue Division Appeal; Vote Due June 9

On May 10, the Federation of International Lacrosse solicited votes from 27 full-member nations on a simple “postal ballot” that will determine the the future of the Iroquois Nationals' appeal that they hope will grant them entry into the elite Blue Division in the FIL 2014 World Championships in Denver.

The phrasing of the question, one of the mysteries prior to the FIL's sending out the ballot, is important and says a lot about the future of the appeal depending on the vote's outcome.

Coaches often talk about “defending the knowns”. By that they typically mean preparing for guys like Rob Pannell, JoJo Marasco, Wesley Berg and Jordan Wolf. Everyone knows those guys are more than likely going to get a few points in a game. Obviously, you don’t want Pannell putting up eight points, or Berg scoring eight goals, but if you can limit those guys below (or even at) their season averages, most coaches would consider that a victory.

The NCAA quarterfinals held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana — the home of the NFL's Indianapolis Colts — turned out to be two extremely exciting matchups that went down to the wire, as both Denver and Duke enjoyed thrilling wins over North Carolina and Notre Dame, respectively.

Inside Lacrosse's Casey Vock was "on the scene" in downtown Indianapolis to live blog/Tweet both games, which drew an impressive 7,749 fans — a significantly greater number than the reported 3,939 at College Park on Saturday afternoon.

Denver is the first team in Men’s Lacrosse Championship Quarterfinal history to win after trailing by five goals or more.

MCLA Tournament: Colorado State, St. Thomas Champs

Two teams who won national championships in Greenville, S.C., 12 months ago failed to lose a single game in 2013 en route to becoming back-to-back MCLA champions.

Colorado State will enter the 2014 season having won 30-straight games. Alex Smith remains undefeated as a head coach against Colorado while earning his second ring as head coach at CSU. Important to note that Flip Naumburg did not travel to nationals this year; it is quite possibly the first USLIA/MCLA Tournament that he has ever missed. One can not deny the unbelievable success that RMLC enjoyed this year, getting all three of their tournament teams into the final four. Colorado State’s last loss was to BYU in the 2012 regular season and all three of these powers will be joined in the DI ranks next year by the Division II runner-up Westminster.

In front of a crowd of 3,939 at Capitol One Field at Byrd Stadium, Cornell and Syracuse advanced to NCAA Championship Weekend in decidedly different fashions.

The Big Red got a dominating offensive performance and ran away from a sloppy Ohio State team, while ’Cuse jumped out to an early lead, hid offensively for better than three quarters as Yale battled back to take a 6-4 lead before reeling off three goals in the final 3:04 and holding on for the one-goal win.

The eve of the NCAA Tournament brings back one of my favorite features of the year, Anonymous Scouting Reports. Throughout the week, I've conducted interviews with more than a half-dozen coaches who, between them, have prepared for each of team in the field, and in some instances, both teams in a matchup.

With the promise that their names wouldn't be attached to their comments, here's some unvarnished opinion of what we might see this weekend.

CORNELL vs. No. 3 OHIO STATE

“Can Ohio State's D be good enough to stop Pannell? And can Cornell be good enough to keep Ohio State down? I think Ohio State is playing ridiculously well and they have a ton of mojo going. Ohio State has so much energy, and Cornell is Cornell. Here's the other thing — there's a pretty good chance Pannell's seen everything they're going to throw at him, so it's going to come down to how they execute, not how they scheme.”

One hundred and thirty years of history as an independent men’s lacrosse program is a lot, so Johns Hopkins hasn’t rushed a decision about joining a conference. On Friday, JHU announced that after two months of research and opinion-gathering, the seven-member Blue Ribbon Committee, co-chaired by Jerry Schnydman (’67) and Chris Watson (’05), unanimously recommended to Hopkins president Ronald J. Daniels that the men's lacrosse team should pursue conference affiliation.

Usually, splitting goalies is a solution to an unfortunate problem. One goalie isn't pulling away from the position. A coach has to work to balance talent versus leadership that needs to play itself out. Contrasting styles mean different looks. It's never quite construed as a good thing.

For Denver, though, the situation was forced by an embarrassment of riches, since they simply had too much talent in net.

Ohio State's offense has made waves recently — the Buckeyes put up 18 goals in their ECAC Semifinal win over Loyola, 11 goals in the ECAC title game win over Denver and 16 goals in their NCAA first-round win over Towson.

The Buckeyes average 11.50 goals per game, 15th-best in Division I, and they run the 11th-most efficient offense in the nation.

However, as Buckeye coach Nick Myers will tell you, they win as much with defense as with offense, allowing 8.38 goals per game (11th-best in DI, 18th-most efficient).

Additionally, as of last Friday the NCAA had sold 18,284 all-session passes for NCAA Championship Weekend, and 1,980 single-day tickets as fans prepare for Memorial Day weekend at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
