"Several years ago, I was standing in line at Walmart in Webb City, Missouri, ready to pay for my purchases," Connie says. "I usually don't look around at others in line, but I had a very uneasy feeling and smelled a peculiar odor. I turned around and looked at a very tall man dressed in black. "I was at the Stanley on a ghost tour," says George. "I didn't notice it until I was on the plane home and zoomed in on all my Stanley pictures. I was shocked at first. At first I thought it was a dog, then after zooming closer, it certainly looks like an apparition of a little boy. If you look at the people on the ground they are so clear, when you look at the window it looks like a vision. You'll also notice there is no curtain or glass to distort the view; the window is open." COMMENT ON THE NEWS: "Scientifically Haunted House Suggests You're a Sucker"

Here's one for the "scientists jump to a very unscientific conclusion" department. Our recent news coverage noted an item from Wired magazine titled, "Scientifically Haunted House Suggests You're a Sucker." In an effort to debunk all ghost sightings, researchers at London's Goldsmith College constructed a room into which high electromagnetic fields and waves of infrasound were generated. Test subjects who were in the room reported sensations of "dizziness, tingling, disembodiment, dream-remembrance and 'a presence'."
And this is supposed to prove that the ghost phenomenon isn't real? It's an absurd conclusion -- or even suggestion. Yes, they were able so create some of the effects (sort of) that some people experience with a haunting. But that's like saying the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland disproves ghosts because they are able to effectively create the illusion of transparent, dancing ghosts right before your eyes. Simulating something doesn't mean that the real experience isn't real. It's worth noting, too, that no one in the Goldsmith experiment reported seeing an apparition.

Moreover, it's well known in paranormal research that electromagnetic fields can screw with your brain and can even cause hallucinations. Good investigators always look for sources of EMF to account for certain reports and rule them out. So, this experiment only proves what paranormal investigators have known for a long time, and adds absolutely nothing to the knowledge base of genuine paranormal phenomena. They have not proved or disproved anything new.

Ghosts and Poltergeists

"I was up around 2:30 a.m. in a darkened room, sitting on a couch watching TV, as I couldn't sleep," says Neal. "With nothing more than the emanation from my cathode-ray tube, from the corner of my right eye I saw a luminescent, free-form apparition enter from my bedroom, hovering about five feet from the floor. It moved with intelligent volition and stopped right in front of me from where I sat. It appeared, as best as I can describe, as a glowing smoke, moving quickly within itself...." Paranormal Activity - review

The big problem with seeing a mega-hyped movie a few weeks after it opened in the theaters is that it can never live up to those heaping piles of hype. I had that experience with The Blair Witch Project many years ago and again this past weekend when I finally got to see Paranormal Activity. From the way people have been talking about the film, rightly or wrongly I expected more from it -- specifically, more scares. It's not that the movie in completely ineffective, but it's certainly not effective enough as a ghost story to become a classic, as some have promoted it to be.
