The teenage unemployment rate last year was at its highest level since the Bureau of Labor Statistics began keeping track of such data in 1948.

The language enthusiasts listed a slew of candidates for the longest word in the English language. Some contenders: radioimmunoelectrophoresis (length: 26 letters; definition: no clue, but probably something medical), floccinaucinihilipilification (29 letters; “the estimation of something as valueless“), and antidisestablishmentarianism (28 letters; “opposition to the withdrawal of state support or recognition from an established church“).

All hilariously long words, but according to the Oxford Dictionary, one word trumps ‘em all: the little used “pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.” That’s 45 letters, kids. Dictionary.com explains that it refers to “a lung disease caused by silica dust.” The word is, thankfully, quite obscure, so some might argue that it doesn’t count. However, Oxford explains that the word (which I refuse to re-type) is included in its dictionaries. So, I say the title belongs to it.

I honestly have never heard that word in my life, although looking at it, I don’t even know how one would even pronounce it anyway.

A few months back, the New York Times ran an article and an accompanying calculator to explain that for some people, renting makes more sense than buying (obviously flying right in the face of conventional wisdom that everyone needs to buy and own or they fail at life and are wasting money). I ended up coming up with numbers that said that homes for rent make more sense than homes for sale.

In fact, according to that calculator, it would take a whole lot of ideal conditions for buying to make more sense than renting. In my case, it would take 17 years (30 with more realistic property tax numbers) to be saving more by buying than by renting.

And that’s just based on the known costs. If I buy a home, I also have to worry about the roof, the appliances, the sidewalk, the walls, leaks, pipes, etc. In fact, for most homeowners I know, mortgages and property taxes are not the big costs; it’s the unexpected stuff that breaks / malfunctions. A sink here, a toilet there, a roof here, and so on, and the next thing you know? You’re spending tons of money.

In my world? Sink leak? Call the super! Toilet not working? Call the super! A few days ago, my bath tub backed up pretty badly. Super came up. Boom. Problem solved.

I’m not saying it’s always better to rent. There are times when the savages I sometimes share this building with make me hate renting. There are people who, near the cans for the garbage down stairs, will leave their garbage on the floor as if they dropped it and can’t be bothered to grab it. But frankly, I’ll take that over a leaky roof!

Oh yeah, and I can move whenever I want and not have to worry about my old place selling in a dead market first!

The takeaway is simple: don’t automatically assume buying is a better bargain. Use the calculator I linked above, then head to Move.com and check out the listings for what’s available (also linked above) in your area.

Viva renters!

Let’s face reality. Unless you have a Mac or Linux computer, you probably run some kind of Antivirus because Windows is to viruses what Toyota is to stopping problems. Whether you’re looking for Norton AntiVirus 2010 or some other virus protection suite, Antivirusware.com has a solution for you.

The good part is that they don’t stop at giving you a centralized location to buy and download antivirus software, they rate and review just about every major package available for your computer so you can make an informed decision and while Norton Antivirus 2010 wins their overall award, you can pick one that’s more important for the categories that matter to you. For example, if you’re looking for an antivirus package that consumes the least amount of memory, you could go with BitDefender, which wins by a hair over Antivir.

My experiences with antivirus software in the past have been checkered. Some start out good and get worse as time go on. Some just flat out don’t work. Some others are more interested in feature bloat (ie: having the most checkboxes filled on the back of their box in the comparison table), and some simply cost too much. It’s nice to see someone taking the task of comparing antivirus software further than reading the boxes.

The Itawamba County school district’s board decided Wednesday to drop the prom because of what it called recent distractions but without specifically mentioning the girl’s request, which was backed by the American Civil Liberties Union.

The student, 18-year-old high school senior Constance McMillen, said the cancellation was retaliation for her efforts to bring her girlfriend, also a student, to the April 2 dance.

“A bunch of kids at school are really going to hate me for this, so in a way it’s really retaliation,” McMillen told The Clarion-Ledger of Jackson. Calls to McMillen by The Associated Press late Wednesday went unanswered.

School policy requires that senior prom dates be of the opposite sex. The ACLU of Mississippi had given the district until Wednesday to change that policy, arguing that banning same-sex prom dates violated McMillen’s constitutional rights.

It got me thinking though; what if she arrived and said she didn’t have a date and that her and her girlfriend weren’t there as a couple. Would they not let them in the door?

And, of course, the school is now going to pin (without actually saying so) the entire cancellation on this one girl so that her fellow students can ridicule her. That’s equally ridiculous.

But hey. At least they won’t have to have young adults exposed to something as strange and unfamiliar as lebians. *eye roll*

The other two-thirds of homeowners who have gone through the trial program and made the necessary payments remain in limbo. Some of those homeowners — more than 350,000 of them — will ultimately lose out on the kind of relief the administration has repeatedly promised: averting foreclosure through lower monthly payments.

The subtitle addresses the mechanism for this growth, bureaucrats creating a pyramid of subordinates. Parkinson derives his law from “two almost axiomatic statements”: An official wants to multiply subordinates, not rivals. Officials make work for each other.

Nowadays Parkinson’s law is usually condensed to saying work expands to the time allowed. It is applied to individuals as well as a burgeoning bureaucracies. Parkinson discusses this interpretation in his opening p

Guns. Religion. Abortion. These are the no-win arguments that spoil family gatherings — and the stuff of retailers’ nightmares.

Starbucks has found itself in the middle of just such an argument as its stores became forums for demonstrations by both pro-gun and gun-control advocates. All for a firearm policy that hasn’t changed and is the same as most retailers’: follow the local law. If it’s legal to carry a firearm in town, it’s allowed in the stores.

In recent months, the “open-carry” arm of the gun-rights movement, which advocates that gun owners carry visible weapons as they go about their daily business, have been exercising their rights. They’ve been proudly displaying their sidearms in public places, sometimes meeting up in groups.

Starbucks’ association with a politically liberal, “latte sipper” ethos, made it a tempting target for gun-control advocates. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence attracted more than 26,000 signatures demanding that Starbucks “offer espresso shots, not gunshots.”

Starbucks’ response? It reiterated its policy of following state and local laws and politely asked everyone to leave it out of the debate.

It’s frightful territory for a business, which risks alienating customers and losing sales by taking sides on such emotional debates.

During the AOL situation a few years ago, I got two comments on this site. Basically it was a guy threatening legal action against me for using “his” AOL clip. Essentially, he was saying the AOL call that made me famous for 15 minutes was his and he would sue me for using it.

Here is the relevant exchange (on this post).

First him:

This phone conversation sounds very very familiar. Something which I went through with aol. Where did you get this sound clip?

Then me:

I recorded it

Original source = best.

Then him:

I was watching msnbc this morning and it grabbed my attention when I thoguht I heard my comments. I mean, maybe it is coincidence, but everything is almost IDENTICAL to my phone call to AOL about a year ago. except for the sound of your voice. If I am not mistaken, re-recording the original conversation basically word for word and then using your own name and changing the ferrariboxer screen name (which was my father’s) into your own (popsferrari) is plagiarism right?

Again, maybe I am over-reacting and this could all just be a big coincidence, and I apoliogize for wasting your time if it is, but I suggest you contact me with your information at spennella@earthlink.net and have a good lawyer in line incase this isn’t just coincidence.

Then me:

AOL already responded to the incident and fired the rep in question. There is no doubt that the call took place and that it was me in it in anyone’s mind except for yours.

And don’t threaten me anymore. You wanna get a lawyer involved, go right ahead. I have plenty of proof the call was me, including corroborating witnesses at AOL who heard the call in their own recordings.

Don’t waste my time anymore, pal.

So what happens? Today, I left a comment on the site Lost Remote. He replied to the comment.

vincent. I left a comment on one of your websites about 4 years ago and was wondering if you could remove it for me so that my name will not show up on a websearch. let me know. thanks.

Oh really? Not quite, buddy boy.

No. I can’t. In fact, I’m gonna highlight the comments in their own post just so they show up even more.

Have a great day!

And there you have it. Not only is there a post with Sam Pennella in the comments, there’s now a post about Sam Pennella. I probably wouldn’t have bothered if this piece of work didn’t try to threaten me legally, but he did, and I don’t take kindly to that.

The funny thing is, I have a platform and he doesn’t, and yet he keeps popping up. A wise man once said “Never have arguments with people who buy ink by the gallon.”

Next time, be careful who you threaten, Sam.

When I was a kid, my dad taught me how to make copper bracelets using the core of coaxial cable and some clear varnish. For the most part they came out pretty awesome. You could brade the copper into a nice look, and by clear-coating it, you stop it from turning green on your arm.

Of course, that’s good if you’re the DIY type. If not, then you may want to look into the copper bracelets sold at Billy the Tree. Aside from the intricate designs (check this one out!) they have lots of other styles and materials including a whole line of magnetic anklets, bracelets, necklaces, rings, and so on. Incidentally, the best part of a magnetic clasp is that you don’t have to have your husband help you put your jewelry on when you’re getting dressed for a night out.

Billy the Tree offers free shipping worldwide and they offer a money back guarantee, meaning you can pick something out online and not feel like you’re stuck with it if you don’t like it later on (although that’s probably not going to happen considering the variety of styles they have available). If you’re on the lookout for a few copper bracelets or something a little more traditional, check these guys out. There’s something there for everyone!
