A documentary about David Welsford, a 29 year old from Nova Scotia, Canada who spent all of his money and several years labouring to restore Lizzy Belle from the boat boneyard.

Now you would be hard pressed to find room for one more stamp in his passport. Although living on an old 28′ wooden boat is not always an easy time, Dave never seems to be happier then when faced with a new challenge or when enjoying a cold beer after learning something the hard way. Dave keeps a fantastic blog about his adventures. It’s full of great insight and even better photography.

THE DIRECTOR & CINEMATOGRAPHER: Kevin A Fraser is cinematographer and documentary director who has been lucky enough to make movies with his friends in over a dozen countries, every Canadian province, 24 American States and counting. As a Cinematographer, Kevin focuses on dramatic and commercial work and as a director he creates documentaries and branded content. He’s always looking to meet collaborators and make new friends.

THE PRODUCER: Melani Wood, is a producer of documentaries, short films, commercials and music videos. She values people as much as product and makes dreams come true for the filmmakers she collaborates with. This approach seems to be a formula for success as virtually every project she has ever touched has been an award winner!

THE EDITOR: Shawn Beckwith is an editor and filmmaker based out of Nova Scotia, Canada. A graduate of the Canadian Film Editors lab, Shawn enjoys spending his days working with fun creative people and brewing craft beer. In recent years, he has filled up his glass with as many varieties and styles of films as he can, such as Kevin Fraser’s “Twenty Eight Feet: Life on a little wooden boat”, Angus Swantee’s “Torturous” and Andrew Bush’s “Everyone’s Famous”. These projects have found success screening at many festivals around the world. Shawn looks forward to growing as an editor for many years to come.

Concept:
The work “impact” shows what kind of effects different living conditions can have to humans. In an abstract language the video visualizes how each person is able to stand up and form himself again and again by experiences and setbacks. Everyone undergoes both positive and negative phases throughout his life and its experience shapes our character.
Also negative setbacks can attract positive energy, thereby further to give new impetus to our environment. As soon as the work is related to the current situation of our society and global looks, you can also discover completely different aspects in it. Capitalism, which is like a machine influences the thought of many people and yet often achieves more suffering than happiness in our inner being. Even the dependence on black gold and other commodities, which inevitably gives power to the political elites controlling the development of our society.

Design:
The structure of the machine developed by the individual tracks from Max.
For each sound track I built a part of the machine that can move exactly to the respective track. The result is a complex construct and interaction with the sound. The idea was also to visually break up the viewing habits and we decided to take an old steam engine as a reference. This created a nice mix between modern technology and forgotten artifacts. The project includes techniques of 3D animation, fluid simulation and post effects.

This track is called Impacts, and it’s about the Impacts of life, which hammer away at each one of us like a machine, but hopefully in the end make us stronger rather than breaking us. So despite the mechanical pounding, lacking any softness or melody, hopefully there is still a positive to be found in this track, if you’ve heard it in a club you might know what I mean.

This track is part of the album named “Human”, where I have taken lots of concepts common to all of us, and I have attempted to represent each on in the form of a piece of music. So I haven’t decided to become a gabba producer just yet, this just happens to be the most abrasive concept on the album, and the most abrasive track as a result.
Linking the track and video to the concept was a straightforward process this time, just a matter of finding some nice mechanical sounds, then repeat repeat repeat, and layer in glitch and detail to hopefully hold the listener despite the sparseness. One interesting addition was the use of real guitar amps and speakers at Andy Ramsay’s Press Play studio in London — we ran the separate drum tracks through and massively overdrove them, then recorded back the results, which are basically heavily distorted hits, which you can hear at some points in my mix, but are brought to full effect in Perc’s remix. The analogue distortion sounds pretty nice (in a nasty sort of way) I think.

For the video I was lucky enough to tempt in Dmitry Zakharov (who you may remember from my Micron video). Dmitry has created his beautiful retro impacts man-machine that hammers someone into creation, destroys them, and then brings them back — a great visual abstraction of the original concept.

Amsterdam-based illustrator Stefan Glerum teamed up with animation studio Crooked Line to create this animated music video for DJ and producer RipTide.

Crooked Line was responsible for bringing Stefan’s illustrations to life for the first time.

To coincide with the launch of the video, Stefan Glerum put together an exhibition of works from this project at Kallenbach Gallery in Amsterdam.

The show features an extensive amount of original drawings, sketches and prints from this project, which can be viewed until February 24th at the gallery.

After the amazing Premier Automne, Carlos De Carvalho releases his new short animated film Juste de l’eau, and it’s this time again a real visual feast, with a very original design playing all along with perspectives and colors, and an amazing amount of details.

The story takes place in Lisbon at the time of the great maritime discoveries. Explorers, looking like pigs, arrive in the harbour after a long voyage across the oceans. Everywhere in the city small groups gather and congratulate each other. Couples meet again after a long separation and hug one another. They organize spontaneous round dances and celebrate their return. Meanwhile, a young pig has the strange feeling of being completely isolated from the others in his own native city…

Three passengers who awake on a train which none of them remember boarding.
The film presents the dimensions, 16 X 9 as three things, the boundaries of an imagined reality, the window to an alternate world and the portal to that world. The viewer is challenged to guess the rules of the imagined world and the characters within it.

This is the graduation film of Ethan Clarke at CalArts (2013).

Though the film has synopsis, consider it as a visual poem. Like a photograph – moment in time, without ending or beginning, a glimpse of episode of someone’s life. A fading dream.

The story follows an old lady whose husband was a member of a secret guild, the sacred worship.

For centuries it guarded the closed Door in a silent, isolated house at the end of the world. The Door was sealed so long ago, that no one can remember what was hidden behind it.
After the unexpected death of her husband, she was the last who knows about the secret, that had been kept for centuries.

For an artist, what is his own art ?
To what extent can an artist become one with his work ?

Imagine a sculptor working on a marble figure. This artwork, while being shaped, will develop a life of its own, with its own soul. Now imagine this newborn soul wanting be part of the artistic process, contributing to the creation of an artwork in which itself is contained. And as its creativity fuels the process, it also slowly consumes itself, just as humans expend to eventually become a pile of dust.

What if the artist, witnessing this phenomenon, would then want to repossess his artwork and make it part of himself again ?

Sculptures That Lost The Sense Of Time is a collaboration between Luigi Pane and Federico Pepe who get together to explore and play with what are in fact a series of “impossible paradoxes in art”.

The film has been presented at Palais De Tokyo in Paris on April 2013 in occasion of the launch of the 4th issue of the editorial project Le Dictateur.

“Patrick Lyons was our actor/astronaut in this video, Wearing a High Altitude Fighter Pilot Helmet I bought from ebay. We experimented with different lights, smoke, lasers and interface designs. We then shot lots of experiments against a green screen. I spent a long time experimenting with Cinema 4D and After Effects creating a large amount of shots and 3D renders of space stations and planets. There is also real NASA Time lapse sequences taken by the crew of expeditions onboard the International Space Station.”

A short animated film directed by Uri Kranot and Michal Pfeffer

During a heart transplant operation, as he struggles between life and death, Amos Klein returns to siginificant landmarks over the course of his life. These correspond with key moments in Israeli history.

His journey is a reflection of moral corruption, of militarism and indoctrination. The film is an allegory to the loss of innocence and compassion; it carries a powerful universal message regarding issues such as patriotism and individuality.

While providing a historic and cultural context, the dictinct visual language allows for emotional insight into complex issues; As an animated documentary, the film utilizes technniques unique to the medium, incorporating stylized drawn animation with live-action and archive footage.

Here’s the music video for Whirling birds ceremony the first music video for Dhafer Youssef‘s new album “Birds requiem” Directed by Mohammad Zaza and Bashar Zein for Maknoun Studio.

Following up on the superb “Abu Nawas Rhapsody“, Dhafer Youssef’s new album “Birds Requiem” reunites the musician with Norwegian trumpet player Nils Petter Molvaer and guitarist Eivind Aarset but also introduces new musical partners including British double bass player Phil Donkin, Turkish clarinet player Hüsnü Şenlendirici and Estonian born pianist Kristjan Randalu.

MPC: Mr X (dir. Alex Nicholson)

A short film directed by Alex Nicholson about Duncan X a tatooist from south London. Duncan discuss about his experience of life, drugs, and existential views on the parallels between the human condition and tatooing.

“The task was to determine how the tattoos would first be removed, then proceed to grow back over Duncan’s skin. MPC‘s Motion Design studio attended the shoot, where Duncan had his body covered in make up and tracking markers to determine their placement.”

VFX Supervisor John Sunter led the Motion Design studio in creating a storyboard of how each scene would look, including the design of the tattoos. These then acted as style frames for the director to work from.

Extensive cleanup was necessary to remove the tracker markers, along with the traces of tattoos under his make-up. This meant taking sections of skin and pasting them onto other parts of his body using Nuke and After Effetcs.

The tattoos were animated and then tracked onto his body using Mocha. RealFlow was also utilized to create the flowing effects, and the snakes were animated in Cinema 4D.

Buck: ChildLine “First Step”

London based YCN Studio commissioned animation company Buck to create this sensitively and delicate cell-animate piece in order to promote ChildLine, a UK-based, confidential, free, 24-hour counseling service for children and young people under the age of 19. ChildLine deals with any issue that causes distress or concern, one of which is unfortunately sexual abuse.

The Mill: We Are Shining – Wheel

Mill+ Director Carl Addy directs this debut music video “Wheel” for the London based duo WE ARE SHINING (Acyde and Morgan Zarate) as a way to visually articulate the band’s mesmerising sound.

Working closely with WE ARE SHINING, the Mill+ team visually represent the band’s influences and inspirations in this video through a montage of stills and video material derived from multiple sources made into hundreds of gif sequences.

“The psychedelic video tells the story of a primitive man who stumbles upon modern tribalism; fashion, music, sex, booze. As he tries to escape this world he encounters a temptress who breaks his resolve. The film then breaks down into a larger global party where everyone is dancing along to the end of the world, everything descends into a chaotic orgy of destruction leaving the tribal man broke, yet enlightened, and so the wheel continues.”
