<p-->U.S President Joe Biden has hosted leaders from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Washington today for talks on Trade relations, regional security and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The two-day summit is meant to demonstrate the United States’ commitment to being a partner with countries in the region.
Some critical issues — like the post-Covid economic revival, climate change the Myanmar coup and Security issues — are on the table at the meeting starting yesterday.

Cambodia holds the rotating ASEAN chair and up to eight leaders, including Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, attend the summit.

Cambodian Government spokesperson H.E. Phay Siphan said the gathering is a golden opportunity for ASEAN leaders and in particular for the Cambodian premier to share the vision for the future of Cambodian-U.S relations.

The spokesperson praised the bilateral ties and said Cambodia enjoys ties of friendship and respect with the U.S, adding efforts were being exerted to solve a number of disagreements between the two countries.

He said the United States remains committed to supporting Cambodia in the sectors of Climate Change, agriculture, human resource and education.

Dr. Atef Abdel-Jawad, a political analyst and professor of political science at George Washington University, said that Asian countries would need to fulfill their needs either by cooperating with China or with the US, or both of them, without getting involved into a conflict with China.

He added that ASEAN countries sought to balance their relations with China and the United States. Abdel-Jawad added that China has to submit some initiatives regarding the South China Sea to improve its ties with ASEAN countries.

ASEAN’s 10 members are Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

<p-->Mongolia has built its first-ever European high-tech metal powder plant, with an annual capacity of 3,000 tons of powders of copper, brass, bronze, tin and other metals.

The plant was built by Steppe Metal Powder LLC in cooperation with Mongolian engineers and technicians and German experts.

The powder metallurgy plant is expected to export its products to countries and regions in high demand for metal powders, such as China, South Korea, Japan, India and the European Union.

Plant’s Technology Manager M.Chinbayar said the factory becomes an advanced technology that can be used in any field, adding that any type of metal can be ground using atomization technology.

Its Executive Director Askhar Bakyei said the factory, which was put into operation last month, faces temporary challenges of logistics. He said through powder metallurgy and 3D printing, metal powder can be used to produce high-end parts for automotive and industrial equipment.

<p-->Sri Lanka is grappling with its worst economic meltdown in over seven decades, with rolling electricity blackouts and essential goods such as food and cooking gas also in short supply.

The South Asian island nation had ordered troops to petrol stations as sporadic protests erupted among the thousands of motorist’s queueing up daily for scarce fuel.

Soldiers were deployed after angry crowds blocked a main artery in Colombo and held up traffic for hours because they were unable to buy kerosene oil.

Police said many elderly people have dropped dead at fuel queues since the crisis, adding that numerous petrol stations saw people camping to wait for diesel and gasoline purchases.

A Litro Gas Company’s Higher Official said the company will resume distribution when two ships carrying gas supplies will arrive the country in the next two weeks coming from the Thai Siam Gas Company.

Chairman of the United National Self-Employed Businessmen’s Association Mr. Pradeep Charles said three corruption complaints have been lodged so far against Litro Gas Company.

<p-->As their numbers grow and their family support weakens, elderly people in Bangladesh are not getting the whole protection they need.

Bangladesh has about 15 million people aged 60 and above; by 2050, their number will increase to 36 million (22 percent of the total population).

The country, now entering the intermediate stage of ageing, will reach the advanced stage in another 30-35 years. The “dependency” of older people on the economically active population will increase significantly.

The elderly are finding it challenging to meet their physiological, psychological, and social demands as a result of many changes. They are mostly vulnerable in terms of housing, food consumption, and money, as well as participation in family decision-making and societal attitudes and beliefs.

The Deputy Director of office of Districts Social Welfare, inside the Shanti Nibas (Peace Home) complex, hailed the conditions of elderly people inside the complex but he called for more medicines for them as they become sick frequently and they need to take to the hospital.

In 1997, Bangladesh’s government established a means-tested cash assistance program for the elderly in addition to a number of other programs.

<p-->The Phnong ethnic minority in the Stung Treng province are living in fear and insecurity as they come together to protect the forest surrounding their Kbal Romeas village against an influential foreign logging company that devours the forest trees. The afflicted community is trying to protect the forest amid lack of action by the local authorities.

Srang Lanh, a village representative, said that village representatives had lodged a request with the authorities to turn the forest into a collective forest to protect it from deforestation and logging, yet he said, the request was ignored in favor of the logging company.

Srang Lanh, who also represents the afflicted community, said the Phnong indigenous community are adamant to protect the village, especially after witnessing the destruction wrought by a foreign company that built a hydroelectric dam which raised the water levels and saw houses submerged underwater.

<p-->An exciting discovery of 15 Iron Age Megalith monuments has been unearthed in Sri Lanka, an island country in South Asia.

The discovery, dating back about 2500 years, came to light in the Kithulkote area of Thanamalwila village, southeast of the capital, Colombo.

The monuments were found after a school student made the discovery and informed the Kithulkote school’s history teacher, who said the discovery uncovered evidence of a pre-historic largest Megalithic cemetery in the area.

The teacher added that the finds give us a vital glimpse into what life would have been like in the Iron Age.

Director-General of Archeology Senior Prof. Anura Manathunga commended the discovery of Megalith Monuments as a milestone for archaeologists who study the Prehistoric Age.

Ramli Raban, a student of the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism & Hotel Management and a licensed Senior Tourist guide, said Sri Lanka has one of the oldest Hominid settlements in all of Asia.

A megalith is a large stone that has been used to construct a prehistoric structure or monument, either alone or together with other stones.

The bio-fermented water can be made by bringing leftover food waste from daily consumption to be mix with molasses and emulsified liquid and then left to ferment under natural anaerobic conditions for 15 days.

After that villagers pour the bio-fermented water into the canals to help add oxygen and improve the conditions of the water in the canals that will become clean.

Villagers in Mueang Samut Prakan District said the bio-fermented water can be used for working in agriculture, fish farming, and watering plants as in the past.

<p-->Jade mining has been illegal in Myanmar since 2019 and operations have increased in Hpakant, in the northern state of Kachin, Myanmar’s main jade-mining area since the military seized power in a 2021 coup.

The illegal jade mining is dominated and conducted by Chinese investors allied with Myanmar’s local authorities and Chinese people who are living in Myanmar.

Sources said that Chinese investors seized the opportunity of benefiting from the illegal jade mining due Myanmar’s unstable situation.

Hpakant residents said the investors have successfully cornered the market, selling directly to visiting Chinese buyers they are already familiar with.

They said Chinese-owned companies are still smuggling jade across the border, claiming that most of the jade industry is run illegally.

The residents added the government has been ineffective at reducing smuggling or regulating the industry more broadly over the past few years.

Demand from China fuels Myanmar’s jade industry, which takes the form of a murky web of illegal Chinese-funded companies whose exports are facilitated by corrupt links to Myanmar’s military and its adversaries in the Kachin Independence Army.
