Nice article, I mostly only build front-end for in-house projects. I really like the idea of building an element list, it had never occurred to me before. I have also started making PSD templates of smaller pieces of the design to speed up changes and updates. Great article Doug.

All great advice, especially the element list and individual PSDs. Creating styles for every tag is also a good tip to follow not only for handoffs like you described, but also when dealing with a CMS that uses a wysiwyg editor like XStandard. You never know what tags a content editor will use. I also liked the idea of using a .data class for tables, in the case that a content editor regresses, and uses a table for layout.

@Matt, that’s good to hear! I actually like to build the element list completely first (using wrappers and some layout), for the same reason. The helps with spacing issues as well as regression tests. Using it as a hand-off was just an unexpected bonus after the first time we did this.

Another great use for an “element list” page is for quick regression testing. If you make such a page early in the development process, and make it robust enough (i.e. with examples of some of the more complicated modules from throughout the site), then it’s super handy to keep open all the time so you can periodically eyeball it and make sure your changes aren’t breaking anything you’ve already built. Not necessarily relevant to the handoff, but a nice side benefit nonetheless.

@Steve I’d bet it would definitely improve sales, at least at first. I know I’ve bought many a book just because the cover was that awesome.

@Anna Yes! I adore those; the attention to detail and sense of humor is great. “This is one smoke you’ll never run from” especially is too perfect.

@Iaman Hmm, it might’ve been the Make video game covers classy thread at Something Awful. That was another page I stumbled upon during my research. But I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a Photoshop Phriday for it too.

Very nice idea and designs, I love those old book covers, too.

I often took them as inspiration as well as books from the 1890 from archive.org, too.

The postmodern approach to make somthing “new” “old”, is an act of recreating mood flows and mix periods. Thats most likely as close as one can get to design time travels.

Very cool. I have a bookcase full of old paperbacks like these and I have always wanted to let them inspire me in my designs. Gonna start thinking about it again.

On a slightly related topic, I’ve sorta wondered what would happen if a publisher tried taking something bad and making it look very good. For example, if top designers took little known books that weren’t very good and decked them out with amazing covers, would they sell? My guess is maybe, until they are reviewed for what they are.

Mindy, thanks so much for the original post and even more so for answering all the questions in the comments section. Due in no small part to my budget, I’ve always been a Wordpress user but you make a convincing argument for EE, especially for those of us building websites for clients. Time is money, after all, and if EE can pay for itself with a few customers then it makes sense. I’m off to tinker with a demo :)

@Shapia: Is your question regarding whether the MacHeist bundle was $49 for the software package? If so, I checked back with my receipt and found out I paid $39 for the package. The unfortunate news is that it was only available for a limited time so unless you know of other opportunities to get a discount you’ll have to pay full price for each of the applications. It hurts to deliver the news.

Very interesting read—a good insight on what it takes to jump into the field these days.
I’d echo John Pash’s question, why isn’t this being compared to FLIR rather than SIFR?

We’ve been looking at FLIR, but we’re a bit put off by the security issues surrounding it, namely the ability to hit the script from a remote server, potentially causing massive processing or free font replacement hotlinking for 3rd party websites. On the plus side, it does keep the font off the web root, so it’s protected.

FLIR needs to have domain restrictions and/or some kind of private key hashing in a backend php script before it could be considered on a production environment.

How does Cufon or typeface.js hold up to that?

I’d love to see a comparison article on all 4 main contenders. I think I’ll have a quick google now (or write it myself if there isn’t one) :)

@Brian: Good point regarding using Dropbox to sync separate Macs. That is something I haven’t attempted to do yet but sounds really useful. Regarding my organization in LittleSnapper, the gist of it is that I set up several smart collections with various criteria. For example, I have a series of folders that have color descriptions on them like Neutrals, Naturals, Pastels, Brights, and Darks. By tagging them appropriately you can sort through more specific inspiration quickly. I’ll try and pull together a screencast to show this more clearly.

@Yule & @Tyrale: Don’t be too surprised that I missed the snap apps you mention. There are dozens of similar products. I just grabbed a handful of the ones that I was aware of. Grabup and Viola look to fit well with the ones that I cover here. Thanks for bringing them to our attention. I’ll have to give them a try.

This is a great write-up and comparison Tom.

I, like you, am a big fan of LittleSnapper and have tried to extend its use across multiple Macs using Dropbox. If anyone is interested, this has worked, but with some caveats:

1. The first is that you need to relocate your LittleSnapper library to somewhere within your local Dropbox folder. You can do this in the “Advanced” part of LittleSnapper’s preferences.

2. The second issue currently is that you must not have LittleSnapper running on another Mac (i.e. Mac #2) that you are not working with, but want to synch your current Mac’s library (i.e. Mac #1) with. If you abide by this rule, once Dropbox does its thing and you re-open LittleSnapper on Mac #2, your library should be up-to-date with any changes you made from Mac #1.

Tom, from peeking over your shoulder, I’ve also noticed that you have a sweet system for organizing your snaps using LittleSnapper’s smart collections. Would you be willing to share your method and set-up on that as well?

“Sometimes you can’t easily pick out what’s happening, so it helps to add some borders:

Using this CSS has helped me learn and solve more than a few bugs. A co-worker showed me that trick and I’m glad to see someone else suggest it for bug fixing.

I’ve used many of these before, but I’ve found that for just taking quick screenshots or selections of Web sites, Jing has been a fantastic tool (http://www.jingproject.com/). It’s free (with optional Pro version available for a cheap $15/year) and also takes video grabs. Screenshots can be notated/edited to a degree, but Jing allows you to copy to clipboard, save the image, upload to Flickr, upload to FTP server, or upload to a free Screencast.com account (which is created for you when you start using Jing). And yes, by default it shows up in that annoying “sun” interface when you first load it up, but this can be turned off in the preferences so that it lives in your menu bar instead.
