7 Days, 7 Backgrounds Ideas...

Here are some background ideas to inspire you to create;

☺♥☺Phone book pages make great backgrounds. They are cheap, plentiful, and the pages are lightweight, so they lend themselves to many mixed-media art applications. Be sure when you use phone book pages as backgrounds that you apply enough other media on top to obscure the names. Old book pages work well, too.

☺♥☺Make textured paint backgrounds. Using acrylic paint or watercolors, apply a wash of two to three colors to your paper or canvas. Then, tilt the substrate this way and that to allow the paint to drip and make rivulets. You could also dab the paint with a wadded paper towel or bubble wrap, or lay crumpled plastic wrap on the paint, let it dry, and then remove the plastic for a mottled effect.

☺♥☺Use resist techniques. Lay down shapes or writing on your substrate using a paintbrush and gesso, a hard graphite pencil, liquid graphite, a stylus, or even a wax crayon. Then paint over your substrate. The paint will resist the areas where the shapes or writing exist, creating a background with depth.
☺♥☺Maps and brochures make terrific mixed-media art backgrounds as they are full of lines, colors, and numbers. Of course, you will want to omit or obscure any material protected by copyright.

☺♥☺Another art technique you can use to make backgrounds is to reuse paper or “failed” artwork as a substrate. What could be faster than starting with a material that is already a perfect background?

☺♥☺Recycling art is a quick way to start a new piece. I like to use gelatin monoprints that don't stand on their own or that suffer from poor color combinations or smudged images.

My Paintbrush...

I keep my paint brush with me
Wherever I may go,
In case I need to cover up
So the real me doesn’t show.

I’m so afraid to show you me,
Afraid of what you’ll do
That you might laugh or say mean things.
I’m afraid I might lose you.

I’d like to remove all my paint coats
To show you the real, true me,
But I want you to try and understand,
I need you to accept what you see.

So if you’ll be patient and close your eyes,
I’ll strip off all my coats real slow.
Please understand how much it hurts
To let the real me show.

Now my coats are all stripped off.
I feel naked, bare, and cold,
And if you still love me with all that you see,
You are my friend, as pure as gold.

I need to sae my paint brush, though,
And hold it in my hand.
I want to keep it handy
In case somebody doesn’t understand.

So please protect me, my dear friend,
And thanks for loving me true,
But please let me keep my paint brush with me
Until I love me too.

Whether you paint, collage, mixed media, stamping, brush maintenance and care is essential. Not only they last longer, maintain their shape and they preform better when you take care of them.
Here are some tips;
Caring and Cleaning for your brushes:

1) Remove the excess paint from the paintbrush by wiping it onto (or with) a cloth or paper towel. Gently squeezing the bristles from the ferrule to the tip helps to remove the paint, but avoid pulling on the bristles.

2) Rinse the brush in lukewarm to cool water if you painted with a water-based medium. Use turpentine or a paintbrush cleaner specifically for oil-based products to remove oil paint. Never use hot water; it can cause the bristles/hairs to fall out.

3) Wipe the brush on the cloth again to remove any paint that remains. Once all of the excess paint is removed, wash the brush gently with mild soap. Rinse and repeat until there is no trace of paint or soap.

4) Shake the water from the paintbrush and then gently shape the brush head into its correct shape with your fingers.

5) Stand the paintbrush, handle-side down, in a container and allow the brush to air-dry at room temperature. Never rest the paintbrush on its head to dry as the bristles will lose their shape.

And of course, paintbrushes can come in very handy for applying glue, gel medium, and other sticky substances to your mixed-media collage art. For that, I recommend using foam brushes or cheap chip brushes.
If you must use a good quality paintbrush to apply glue, be sure to wash it immediately after use, or the bristles will bond together. I know this from experience!!!

Hope these tips will help you with the proper care of your art brushes, then you will create your very own routine that works for you. Sooo, before you leave your working area make sure your brushes and tools are clean and well placed.

What is Color Splash Photography?

Is a basic photo editing technique that is use to accentuate certain features of a photograph. By leaving certain areas of a photo colored, and filling the rest of the photo with gray scale, one can highlight certain parts of an image to make them stand out.
The most common graphic editing programs used to achieve color splashing are Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, Color Splash Studio on Mac, Gimp, and others online.
I used PS7 and Gimp to achieve my first Color Splash and by watching several videos on You Tube.

"You can create a Mixed Media artwork in any surface that will support the mediums you are working on. It has no limits and sometimes it breaks the traditional rules in art making. Whether is a little detail in your painting or use it as a focal point in your artwork it will always be a Mixed Media art form".

"I have gather some information to get you started in this amazing art form called Mixed Media":

By definition, mixed media art is any form of art that combines two or more mediums in one work. Use of the term began circa 1912 with Cubist collages and the art of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, but these men weren't the first to create mixed media art.

The Earliest Mixed Media Artists

Although they weren't called mixed media artists, artists of the Byzantine Empire, 330 to 1453 A.D., often used gilded gold leaf on their paintings, mosaics, frescoes and manuscripts. The arts stagnated through the Dark Ages, but flourished with the coming of the Renaissance. In addition to working with tempera, a paint medium that dates to ancient Egypt, oil painting became popular. Many artists applied gold leaf to painted wood panels to achieve vibrant skies or shining halos on religious panels.

Cubist Movement

The Cubist art movement began in Europe during the early years of the 20th century. It broke from centuries of traditional painting by depicting objects as three-dimensional images that could be painted from multiple points of view. Space was no longer limited to the flat canvas; by using an analytical system, artists could fragment and redefine viewpoints.

Picasso's First Mixed Media

Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque are considered the fathers of Cubism. Working separately with no communication between them, both artists created works that were similar. By breaking down art to dimensional points of reference, they worked with form and space rather than realistic images. In 1912 Picasso created his first true mixed media piece, "Still Life with Chair Caning." He pasted paper and oilcloth to canvas and combined them with painted areas.

Picasso's Later Works

Beginning in 1912, Picasso applied mixed media techniques to dimensional sculpture. The "Glass of Absinthe" done in 1914 is a vertical piece with many disparate objects assembled together, while "Still Life" involved gluing scraps of wood and a piece of upholstery fringe together and painting them. More realistic is his 1923 piece "The Lovers" which was done using ink, watercolor paints and charcoal on paper.

Mixed Media in the 21st Century

Drawing from the work of early artists, mixed media is now an accessible art form for both professional and amateur artists. Assemblage and collage can be found mixed with acrylic and watercolor painting, rubber-stamped art, sculpture and altered books. Fibers, torn papers, inks, glitter and beads are finding their way into works of fine art and commercial pieces like greeting cards and quilts. The future of mixed media, it seems, is limited only by the imagination of artists and whatever they can get their hands on.

Collage

The art critic Clement Greenberg suggested that collage, a form of mixed media in which various items are combined into a single composition, was one of the most significant steps in the development of modern art. Greenberg places the origin of collage in the work of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque in the years between 1911 and 1913.

Fashion Swap Party (Updates)

Hello Everyone!

Just as I promise, here are some pics of my first Fashion Swap Party. It was a success! I can't believe the treasures these ladies brought to swap around...Beautiful blouses, purses, belts, scarves, shoes, jewelry, fashion essentials, books, candles, etc...This was really fun and everyone took home something new to wear, to use or to give it out to someone special. I'm already thinking for a second Swap!!! Hmm let me think...PAINTINGS!

I arrange my Living Room space (move some furniture to my studio area) and transform it into a boutique, this was exhausting but also all worth it!

My awesome family members and friends that came to this party eager to start shopping, chat and eat yummy bites. Pure Awesomeness!!!

Let the fun begin! Shop Till You Drop!

"Try it on", "This is beautiful", "I can use this", "I need this purse", "I can give this to my niece", I feel like I'm in Charlie Charming", "The wings are yummy", "I have to do this at my Church", "Great Idea", I need this", and many more wonderful words these ladies said at the party, this was music to my ears!!!

Soooo sad when is over! but we all have a great time.

My First; Fashion Swap Party!

This Saturday, October 6, 2012 I will be hosting a Fashion Swap Party at my house with some great ladies, to swap dressy blouses, shoes, purses, belts, hats, costume jewelry, wallets, hair accessories, sunglasses, pocket mirror, winter wear that are in GOOD/GREAT conditions. Fashionistas!!!.

I invited about 10-12 ladies, (starting small) that loves shopping and have awesome taste in fashion.

I'm arranging the Living Room area and part of My Studio as a clothing store; with clothing racks, jewelry holders, purse racks, pleasant music, adding small feminine touches around and using white, black, turquoise and fuschia as my theme colour scheme.

A day filled with fun and laughter, to find new treasures and make new friends too! Who likes shopping without spending $$$? I do!!!

A Day At The Flea Market

I love visiting Flea Markets, especially RENNINGER'S FLORIDA Twin Markets at Mt. Dora, FL sooo, last weekend I went with my parents and my sister on this nice field trip. The weather was nice and it wasn't that crowded. We bought some knicks-knacks and have a nice lunch after a great walk. We love to come often and every time it's something new!

Hello my friends and visitors,

Sorry, I haven't post anything new in my blog lately. I've been busy at work since school started, like some of you know I'm a Preschool Teacher for over 10 yrs. Setting up my classroom, meeting my new students and parents and everything in between...but I'm soooo excited to meet them, they are a bunch of joy, so eager to learn and play.
I'm happy to get back to work after a long summer break.

Today is our fourth day of school and the children are getting used to the school, classroom and routines very well. I work in a VPK classroom and we have to work even harder this year to meet the standards and reach our goals. I love my school and our teaching staff are always giving their best to the children and the community. It's looking great soooo far!.

10 Things Artists Should Be Thankful For

"By the time most artists come to see me, they are usually beaten down and depressed by the struggles of the art world. They have been abused by their galleries, taken for granted by their collectors, misunderstood by their families and exhausted from juggling real life with creative need. It is so easy to forget how special you are, when there is no one around to remind you, but you. So, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I give you my list of 10 Things Artists Should Be Thankful For. Print this out, fold it up and put in your wallet. Send it to your artist friends. Read it whenever you feel all your work is for nothing and you are thinking maybe you should just stop making art and grow up. Post it in your studio when you are wondering what the heck you are going to do with all this work? But, most of all…believe it. Remember, it is impossible to feel thankful and be depressed at the same time. "

1. I am thankful that I am not one of the majority of people in this world that wakes up every morning, goes to a job they hate, just to come home and do it all over again.

2. I am thankful that when I am away from my studio, my ideas come with me, they keep me company everywhere I go.

3. I am thankful for this passion that gives me so much joy (and angst) but mostly joy.

4. I am thankful that when I have left this earth, I will leave something meaningful behind.

5. I am thankful that I have a mind that can not sleep, I will never be bored.

6. I am thankful that there is a part of my life that nobody can control, except me.

7. I am thankful that no one in the world can ever take this gift from me.

8. I am thankful that I am brave, it takes courage to pursue my gift.

Small Summer Projects...

This Summer I have been a little busy creating, arranging and decorating my home,

here are some projects I have been working on;

***Upholstery an old chair

My mother gave me this chair long time ago, I like it and it's very comfortable but It was time to give it a BIG MAKE-OVER! lol so I did!

I purchased some fabric at Old Time Pottery, got some decorative trimming, painted the wood frame and legs. This will be my first time doing this, at the beginning it was intimidating but once I got the hang of it, I was in a roll.

I think is coming out just fine. My sofa has a Cream/Beige with slightly gold stripes cover so, I wanted to continue with the same color value.

Now, comes the best part of all; The Back and The Cushion which I'm still contemplating and some what scared on how to start, but I know I'll find my way to finish my favorite chair before school/work starts.

What do you think? Have you ever Upholstery a furniture?

***Making some Wall Art

I purchased this wall decal at Old Time Pottery of a Bird Cage that goes well with my theme decor, I had some black foam board and use acrylic paint to give it an old wood look background technique.

I used a Small Sawtooth wall hanging, glued it with hot glue on the back of the foam board.

VOILA!

***More Framed Bird Cage

Another Bird Cage fro my collection, I used an old frame and place the Bird Cage in the center with some Peacock Feathers. Love it!

***Inspirational Idea: Purse Rack

I found this fabulous idea to keep my purses organized at Pinterest.com.

I bought a Steel Rail Rack from IKEA with some S-hooks, drilled some holes and VOILA!

No more step stools, trying to reach for a purse when I need it! I Love It!

***New Tray Table for my beautiful birds.

I bought this tray table at Old Time Pottery along with a Metal Book Box and some more beautiful birds.

Gotta Love Them! I Do!☺♥☺
