Step 1: Open Settings app by clicking its icon in the left-pane of the Start menu.

Step 2: At the home page of Settings app, click on System icon.

Step 3: Click Storage. Under Storage section, click on the drive where Windows 10 is installed. For convenience, on the Settings page, Windows 10 displays Windows logo on the drive where Windows 10 is installed.

Step 4: Once you click on the system drive (where Windows 10 is installed), you will see the Storage usagepage. The page displays the disk space used by system and reserved files, apps & games, documents, pictures, music, videos, mail, desktop, other users, maps, OneDrive, and temporary files.

Step 5: As you can see in the picture below, just below the Temporary files entry, Windows 10 displays the space used by temporary files. On my PC, temporary files are using a whopping on 11.5 GB. You can use any of the following methods to enable the built-in Administrator account:

Use an answer file

You can enable the built-in Administrator account during unattended installations by setting the AutoLogon setting to Administrator in the Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup component. This will enable the built-in Administrator account, even if a password is not specified in the AdministratorPassword setting.

You can create an answer file by using Windows® System Image Manager (Windows SIM).

The following sample answer file shows how to enable the Administrator account, specify an Administrator password, and automatically log on to the system.

Note
Both the Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup\Autologon section and the Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup\UserAccounts\AdministratorPassword section are needed for automatic logon in audit mode to work. The auditSystem configuration pass must include both these settings.

Use the Local Users and Groups MMC (server versions only)

Change the properties of the Administrator account by using the Local Users and Groups Microsoft Management Console (MMC).

Open MMC, and then select Local Users and Groups.
Right-click the Administrator account, and then select Properties.
The Administrator Properties window appears.
On the General tab, clear the Account is Disabled check box.
Close MMC.

Administrator access is now enabled.

Disabling the Built-in Administrator Account

For new installations, after the end user creates a user account in OOBE, the built-in Administrator account is disabled.

For upgrade installations, the built-in Administrator account remains enabled when there is no other active local administrator on the computer, and when the computer is not joined to a domain.

Use either of the following methods to disable the built-in administrator account:

Run the sysprep /generalize command
When you run the sysprep /generalize command, the next time that the computer starts, the built-in Administrator account will be disabled.
Use the net user command
Run the following command to disable the Administrator account:

You can run this command after you configure the computer and before you deliver the computer to a customer.

Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and system builders are required to disable the built-in administrator account before delivering the computers to customers. To do this, you can use either of the following methods.

Configuring the Built-in Administrator Password

When you run the sysprep /generalize command on Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2008 R2, the Sysprep tool resets the built-in Administrator account password. The Sysprep tool only clears the built-in Administrator account’s password for server editions, not for client editions. The next time that the computer starts, Setup displays a prompt for a password.
Note
In Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008, the default password policy requires a strong password for all user accounts. To configure a weak password, you can use an answer file that includes the Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup\UserAccounts\AdministratorPassword setting. You cannot configure a weak password, either manually or by using a script such as the net user command.

Choose UEFI or legacy BIOS modes while installing Windows. After Windows is installed, if you need to switch firmware modes, you may be able to use the MBR2GPT tool.

In general, we recommend installing Windows using the newer UEFI mode, as it includes more security features than the legacy BIOS mode. If you're booting from a network that only supports BIOS, you'll need to boot to legacy BIOS mode.

After Windows is installed, the device boots automatically using the same mode it was installed with.

To boot to UEFI or BIOS:

Open the firmware menus. You can use any of these methods:
- Boot the PC, and press the manufacturer’s key to open the menus. Common keys used: Esc, Delete, F1, F2, F10, F11, or F12. On tablets, common buttons are Volume up or Volume down (find more common keys and buttons). During startup, there’s often a screen that mentions the key. If there’s not one, or if the screen goes by too fast to see it, check your manufacturer’s site.
- Or, if Windows is already installed, from either the Sign on screen or the Start menu, select Power () > hold Shift while selecting Restart. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware settings.
From the firmware menus, boot to drive or network while in UEFI or BIOS mode:
On the boot device menu, select the command that identifies both the firmware mode and the device. For example, select UEFI: USB Drive or BIOS: Network/LAN.
You might see separate commands for the same device. For example, you might see UEFI USB Drive and BIOS USB Drive. Each command uses the same device and media, but boots the PC in a different firmware mode.
Some devices only support one mode (either UEFI or BIOS). Other devices will only allow you to boot to BIOS mode by manually disabling the UEFI security features. To disable the security features, go to Security > Secure Boot and disable the feature.
Some older PCs (Windows 7-era or earlier) support UEFI, but require you to browse to the boot file. From the firmware menus, look for the option: "Boot from file", then browse to \EFI\BOOT\BOOTX64.EFI on Windows PE or Windows Setup media.

Detect UEFI or BIOS mode on a factory floor

Before installing Windows, check to make sure your firmware is booted to the right mode using any of these methods:

Use a script to check. Windows PE: create a script that checks which mode the device is booted in before installing. See WinPE: Boot in UEFI or legacy BIOS mode.
Use preformatted hard drives, and use a method that doesn't automatically format the drive. Use drives that have been preformatted using the GPT file format for UEFI mode, or the MBR file format for BIOS mode. When the installation starts, if the PC is booted to the wrong mode, Windows will fail to install, and the technician can restart the PC in the correct firmware mode.
Remove the UEFI or BIOS boot files: Windows PE or Windows Setup: remove the files that Windows PE or Windows Setup to boot in UEFI or BIOS mode. When the device is booted in the wrong mode, it will immediately fail to boot, and you can begin troubleshooting right away.
- Boot only when in UEFI mode: Remove the bootmgr file from the root of the Windows PE or Windows Setup media. This prevents the device from starting in BIOS mode.
- Boot only when in BIOS mode: Remove the efi folder from the root of the Windows PE or Windows Setup media. This prevents the device from starting in UEFI mode.

When installing Windows on UEFI-based PCs using Windows Setup, your hard drive partition style must be set up to support either UEFI mode or legacy BIOS-compatibility mode.

For example, if you receive the error message: “Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is not of the GPT partition style”, it’s because your PC is booted in UEFI mode, but your hard drive is not configured for UEFI mode. You’ve got a few options:

Reboot the PC in legacy BIOS-compatibility mode. This option lets you keep the existing partition style. For more info, see Boot to UEFI Mode or Legacy BIOS mode.
Configure your drive for UEFI by using the GPT partition style. This option lets you use the PC’s UEFI firmware features.
You can preserve your data and convert the drive using the MBR2GPT tool. You can also choose to reformat the drive using the instructions below. Reformatting will erase all the data on the drive.

Why should I convert my drive?

Many PCs now include the ability to use the UEFI version of BIOS, which can speed up boot and shutdown times and can provide additional security advantages. To boot your PC in UEFI mode, you'll need to use a drive formatted using the GPT drive format.

Many PCs are ready to use UEFI, but include a compatibility support module (CSM) that is set up to use the legacy version of BIOS. This version of BIOS was developed in the 1970s and provides compatibility to a variety of older equipment and network configurations, and requires a drive that uses the MBR drive format.

However, the basic MBR drive format does not support drives over 4TB. It's also difficult to set up more than four partitions. The GPT drive format lets you set up drives that are larger than 4 terabytes (TB), and lets you easily set up as many partitions as you need.

Reformatting the drive using a different partition style

To wipe and convert the drive by using Windows Setup

Turn off the PC, and put in the Windows installation DVD or USB key.
Boot the PC to the DVD or USB key in UEFI mode. For more info, see Boot to UEFI Mode or Legacy BIOS mode.
When choosing an installation type, select Custom.
On the Where do you want to install Windows? screen, select each of the partitions on the drive, and select Delete. The drive will show a single area of unallocated space.
Select the unallocated space and click Next. Windows detects that the PC was booted into UEFI mode, and reformats the drive using the GPT drive format, and begins the installation.

To manually wipe a drive and convert it to GPT:

Turn off the PC, and put in the Windows installation DVD or USB key.
Boot the PC to the DVD or USB key in UEFI mode. For more info, see Boot to UEFI Mode or Legacy BIOS mode.
From inside Windows Setup, press Shift+F10 to open a command prompt window.
Open the diskpart tool:

Close the command prompt window.
Continue the Windows Setup installation.

Be advised, however, that this will not prevent Windows updates from actually installing. This option gives you the ability to control when your machine reboots, but it doesn’t delay installation. Windows 10’s Creators Update will give users somewhat more control over which updates are delivered by allowing you to opt out of driver updates, but the only way to stop updates altogether is to disable the Windows Update service. That’s not something ExtremeTech formally recommends, due to the risky nature of opting out of security updates, but it’s available should you choose to avail yourself of it.

I installed this fix on my own system to measure whether or not it worked. To test it, I deliberately changed my “Active Hours” to be between 8 AM and 2 PM, as shown in the screenshot below:

Fix Realtek High Definition Audio Driver Issue for Windows 10

No sound after upgrading to Windows 10? It’s probably a driver problem. Your audio driver is probably missing or out of date (and therefore incompatible with Windows 10).

So it’s usually a pretty quick fix. Most of the time, you just need to update your audio driver. Here’s how…

To confirm if your PC sound problem is caused by driver issue, you need to check for the driver status in Device Manager:

1) On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and R at the same time to invoke a Runcommand.

2. Type devmgmt.msc and click OK. This will start the Windows 10 Device Manager.

3. In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers. Under this category, you’ll see Realtek High Definition Audio. If there’s a yellow mark next to the device name (usually an exclamation or a question mark), there’s problem with the driver, and you need to update it. E.g.:

There are two ways you can update your audio drivers:

Option 1 – Manually – You’ll need some computer skills and patience to update your drivers this way, because you need to find exactly the right the driver online, download it and install it step by step.

Option 2 – Automatically (Recommended) – This is the quickest and easiest option. It’s all done with just a couple of mouse clicks – easy even if you’re a computer newbie.

Option 1 – Download and install the driver manually

Realtek released its Windows 10 drivers about a month before Windows 10 was launched. To get them, you need to go to the Realtek website, find the drivers corresponding with your specific flavor of Windows 10 (32 or 64 bit) and download the driver manually.

Once you’ve downloaded the correct drivers for your system, double-click on the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver.

Option 2 – Automatically update Realtek audio drivers

If you don’t have the time, patience or computer skills to update the Realtek driver manually, you can do it automatically with Driver Easy.

Driver Power State Failure on Windows 10

If you get Driver Power State Failure error in Windows 10, don’t worry. The problem is probably caused by driver issues. To resolve the problem, you can uninstall the drivers with problems or update the drivers.

Solution 1: Uninstall the drivers with a problem

When you get this error, reboot your PC and enter Safe Mode. Check for the driver status in Device Manager. If you see a yellow mark next to a device, you can uninstall that device.

Firstly, enter Safe Mode:

If you know how to enter Safe Mode, skip this step.

Case 1. When you cannot boot Windows 10 successfully
Case 2. When you can boot Windows successfully

If you cannot boot Windows successfully, please follow steps below to enter safe mode:

1) Reboot your PC.

2) As soon as you reboot your PC, you may see the system is Preparing Automatic Repair. After that, Startup Repair window will appear.

Click Advanced options, then the system will direct the display to Windows RE (Recovery environment.). If the Startup Repair window does not appear, restart Windows again (You may need to restart Windows more than 2 times until the Startup Repair window appears).

2) In Windows RE (Recovery environment), click Troubleshoot.

3) Click Advanced options.

4) Click Startup Settings.

5) Click Restart.

6) On your keyboard, press 4 number key to enter Safe Mode.

If you can boot Windows successfully, follow steps below to enter safe mode:

1) On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and R at the same time to invoke a Run command.

2) Type msconfig and click OK .

3) Click Boot tab. Under Boot options, check Safe boot and click OK .

4) Click Restart then you will enter Safe Mode.

Secondly, Uninstall the drivers with a problem:

After you enter Safe Mode, follow steps below to uninstall the problem drivers.

1) On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and R at the same time to invoke a Run command.

2) Type devmgmt.msc and click OK.

3) Expand the category and find the device with a yellow mark.

4) Right click on the device.

5) Click Uninstall.

6) Repeat the steps above to uninstall all drivers with a yellow mark.

7) Reboot your PC.

IMPORTANT: If you enter safe mode in Windows Normal Mode, uncheck Safe boot after you uninstall the drivers. Then reboot your PC.

Solution 2: Update the drivers

The steps above may resolve the problem, but if they don’t, try to update the drivers.You can update the drivers manually, but if you don’t have the time, patience or computer skills, you can do it automatically with Driver Easy.

WiFi Network Not Showing Up on Computer

I got back home tonight and opened my PC, then tried to connect to my WiFi network as usual, but found my WiFi network not showing up in the WiFi network list. And you have the same problem, too? No worries!

Generally speaking, this problem occurs due to several common reasons. However, the good news is you can easily locate your problem and solve it. This guideline introduces 5 methods for you to troubleshoot. You may not need to try them all; just start at the top of the list and work your way down.

Method 1: Restart your modem and wireless router
Method 2: Check the wireless interference
Method 3: Enable SSID broadcast
Method 4: Turn on WLAN service
Method 5: Update WiFi network driver

Note: First of all, please make sure you are within the WiFi network range while you are following the steps below.

Method 1: Restart your modem and wireless router

This problem can be probably caused by the Internet Service Provider (ISP) issue. Restarting your modem and wireless router can help you reconnect to your ISP. Note: anyone who is connecting to the network will be disconnected temporarily while you are doing this.

1) Unplug your wireless router and modem from power source (remove the battery if your modem has a battery backup).

2) Wait for at least 30 seconds.

3) Plug your wireless router and modem back into power source again (put the battery back to the modem).

4) On your PC, reconnect to your WiFi network, then see if it shows up.

Method 2: Check the wireless interference

Generally speaking, without signals, you can’t see the WiFi network in the list. The WiFi signals can be interfered by many household devices, such as your cordless phone, microwave oven, Bluetooth speaker, etc. Therefore, you can check those devices to see if it’s where the problem lies in.

1) Turn off those devices, and unplug the power source.

2) On your PC, try to connect your WiFi again, and see if it shows up.

3) If the problem solves, it seems to result from the devices interference. Then move the modem and wireless router to another place, so they are not in the same light with the household devices.

Otherwise, it’s not a problem of device interference. In that way you may try the following methods.

Method 3: Enable SSID broadcast

Service Set Identifier (SSID) broadcast is what makes your WiFi network visible to your network adapter. Once you disable SSID broadcast, your WiFi network will not show up in the list. You can try the instructions below to enable your SSID broadcast.

1) Go and see the IP address, username and password on your wireless router.

2) Open your browser on PC or mobile phone (connect to the Internet via Ethernet cable on your PC or use mobile phone that has internet connection).

3) Type the IP address in your browser, and press Enter.

4) Type your User name and Password, then click Login.

5) Go to Wireless > Wireless Settings. Check the box next to Enable SSID broadcast, and click Save.

7) Restart your PC and reconnect to your WiFi network.

If the problem still persists, maybe it’s not a problem of your WiFi network. Then it seems like a problem inside your computer. You can try the following methods to troubleshoot in your PC.

Note: The following screen shots are shown on Windows 10, but the fixes apply to Windows 7 and Windows 8 as well.

Method 4: Turn on WLAN service

This problem happens most likely because your Windows disables the WLAN service. So you can try these steps to enable WLAN service.

1) Right click Internet icon, and click Open Network and Sharing Center.

2) Click Change adapter settings.

3) Right click WiFi, and click Enable. Note: if it has enabled, you will see Disable when right click on WiFi.

4) On your keyboard, press Windows logo key + R at the same time to invoke the Run box, and type services.msc, then press Enter.

5) Right click Wlan AutoConfig, and click Properties.

6) Select Automatic in Startup type, then click Apply, and click OK.

7) Restart your PC and reconnect to your WiFi network to see the problem solves.

Method 5: Update WiFi network driver

The outdated or mismatched WiFi network drivers can also cause the problem. You can try to update the driver to the latest version:

1) On your keyboard, press Windows logo key + R at the same time to invoke the Run box.

2) Type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter.

3) Right click your WiFi network adapter in Network adapters section, and click Uninstall device.

4) Check the box next to Delete the driver software for this device, and click Uninstall.

5) Restart your PC. After restarting, connect your computer to the Internet via Ethernet cable. Then the Windows should automatically reinstall the driver. Assuming it installs the latest correct driver, this may resolve the problem

If you’ve recently upgraded to Windows 10 Creators Update, and found that your Microsoft Edge browser not working properly, you’re not alone. Many Windows users are reporting it. The good news is, you can easily fix it by yourself. Here are 4 fixes for you to try.

Step 1: Clean Boot Your PC

Step 1: Clean Boot Your PC

If it’s the first time you had a problem with your Edge browser, one of the first things you should do is to restart your PC, better yet, do a clean boot. It allows you to run your PC with only a minimal set of drivers and programs:

1) On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and R at the same time, type msconfig and press Enter.

2) Go to Services tab, check the box for Hide all Microsoft services. Click the Disable all button.

3) Go to Startup tab and click Open Task Manager.

4) Select each item on the list and click Disable.

5) Close your Task Manager and restart your computer.

6) If Edge still opens and closes unexpectedly in a few seconds, move on to see if the steps below help.

Step 2: Reinstall through PowerShell

If your Edge browser isn’t installed correctly, not working or opening problem like this could happen. To fix it, you can reinstall Microsoft Edge:

1) On your keyboard, press the Windows key and S at the same time, then type powershell. Right-click Windows PowerShell and select Run as administrator.

When prompted with the administrator permission, click Yes to continue.

2) In the PowerShell window, copy and paste in the following command:

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}

3) You will see a Deployment Operation Progress pop up. Wait for the process to finish. Then try your Edge again.

Step 3: Use Group Policy Editor

1) On your keyboard, press the Windows key and S at the same time, type group policy and click Edit group policy.

2) On the left side of the pane, go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components. Under Windows Components category, click Add package Deployment.

3) On the right side of the pane, double-click Allow deployment operations in special profiles.

4) Click Enabled. Click Apply and OK.

Step 4: Reinstall Windows 10

If you’ve tried all the above methods but still no avail, you may need to consider reinstalling or refreshing your Windows 10.
