Music at the Cannery: Headwater – This summer the Gulf of Georgia Cannery and sponsors will again be bringing us music every Friday as part of their summer music series, and to kick the summer off is the band Headwater. Preview their rootsy/folk style with brilliant harmonies in the video below, and come down for the live outdoor performance at 6:30 pm. Admission by donation.

Summer Music Series at Steveston Museum Park – “Styling the Past” offers you the opportunity to re-live the past by receiving a free retro hair style from skilled stylists on-site. There will also be free craft activities for the kids and fabulous music. Noon – 4pm weather permitting.

Music at the Cannery: Michael Hart – Michael teams up with Spencer Capier to produce an evening of great music. Join them for a wonderful outdoor performance starting at 6:30pm. Admission by donation.

Fish for the Future 2012: This unique event finds fishers of all ages getting to immerse themselves in the undersea world, right from London Landing’s No. 2 road pier, with free admission for the whole family and a long list of activities that includes flycasting, fly tying, fish and bugs identification, hands-on instruction, demos, games, crafts, displays, prizes, and of course, fishing! There are several places to get all the juicy details about events, times and parking regulations, and we suggest checking out the Salmon Festival website and the Richmond Review wrap up.

But for you first timers, here’s the top 10 tips straight from the pros.

1. Don’t Drive

Walk, bike or take transit by hopping on the 401, 402, or 407 and getting off at Garry St and No. 1 Road, which gets you closest to action. New parking regulations mean you’ll either be paying or getting towed, and trust us, it’s next to impossible to get into the village by car anyway.

2. Bring Supplies

While you might think you’ll grab food and drinks while you’re there (and you definitely should!) so will thousands of other people, and those line ups aren’t short. During the parade it’s difficult to access most businesses, and you don’t want to lose your great spot!

3. Involve the Kids

The bike parade is fun for everyone, but kids especially like decorating their bikes ahead of time and meeting at G&F Financial for the free treats and festivities. We suggest having another family member along the parade route saving a spot and ready to relieve kids who overestimated their biking ability.

4. Bring or Buy Bags

Both the parade and the tradeshow are sources for free stuff, and by the end of the day your pockets will be filled with candy, stickers, samples and even potted plants. Bring a backpack, or better yet, find the especially stylish Steveston canvas bags being sold in front of Steveston Remax or at the tradeshow, with all proceeds going to Lord Byng Elementary.

5. Wear Sunscreen

It may be cloudy on Sunday, but you could still get burned, especially during the notoriously lengthy parade. Red and white hats are always encouraged.

6. Dress Up

Canadians don’t get many opportunities to show their national pride, and though you’ll be harder to find in the crowd, get into it and wear your reds and whites. Facepaint will be on hand, temporary tattoos are always in abundance, and we guarantee there will be someone dressed up crazier than you.

7. Expand your Palate

Though the festival is named after Steveston’s favourite fish, it doesn’t mean that’s the only option. Foods from many cultures are represented in the food pavilion, and our restaurants are ready to receive you. We recommend having cash on hand for the booths and carts, but Coast Capital and RBC have ATMs just in case.

8. Wander Around

Many stores throughout the village will be open with Canada Day specials, so the fun doesn’t stop in the main hub. Explorers will be rewarded by sights, sounds and Storybrooke stores from Once Upon a Time, and our village has a lot of offer beyond the main celebrations, so make sure to check it all out.

9. Plan Ahead

Having a plan of attack will help you out tremendously, because you can’t do everything. With the times, lines, people, rides, shows, food, and distance between all corners of the village, you’ll be tired eventually, so pace yourself: a quiet place is never too far away. Look at the map now and figure out your top activity destinations, and don’t be a hero: wear comfortable footwear.

10. Come on Saturday

Saturday? Yep, Ships to Shore goes from Friday to Sunday, so instead of trying to do everything on Canada Day, beat some of the crowds and come visit early. The carnival rides will also be open on Saturday, with all-day wristbands available to purchase now at the new Visitor’s Centre, so get your adrenaline rush then!

Where To Take Dad – The Beat Merchant. Frankie runs the only surviving record store in Richmond and it’s not hard to see why. His love for music and British memorabilia makes for a great “record shop” experience: he knows what he’s talking about and isn’t afraid to speak his mind, albeit through a thick british accent. He’s got a great selection of new CD’s and Vinyl, so take dad for a stroll to The Beatmerchant and grab Slash’s new vinyl, or the new Jack White, Pennywise, M. Ward, Sigur Ros… he’s got it all. Your ears will thank you.
Free Alternative – You could always swing by the Steveston Farmer’s Market on Sunday from 10-4pm. They always have some good live music to tap your toes and wiggle your butt to. Hey! It’s Father’s Day: if you can’t tap and wiggle on that day, when can you?

Sense of Sight

Where To Take Dad – Whale Watching. Living on BC’s west coast gives us the amazing opportunity to take short boat rides to see some of the most amazing creatures on earth. There’s nothing quite like seeing a pod of killer whales breach the surface of the ocean. We guarantee your dad’s eyes will be as big as yours!

Free alternative – Walk the dyke trail from No. 1 Road and Bayview to Britannia Shipyards. This walk has two lookout towers which make for some great photo ops. It also has spacious boardwalks for people and pet watching. Finish your walk at the Heritage Shipyards and cast your eyes on the historic buildings that tell a story of Steveston’s exciting and sometimes dark past.

Sense Of Touch

Where To Take Dad – Steveston Tattoo Company I mean, if you really want to feel something is there any other place to go? The gentlemen over at Steveston Tattoo are friendly, approachable guys and extremely talented. Many people immortalize children or fathers with tattoos of names, faces or symbolic items. Tattoos are not for everybody, but if they’re for you, these guys will take care of you.
Free alternative – Garry Point. On any given weekend you’ll find the park full of kites harnessing the power of the wind. Wind is one of the most powerful forces of nature, and though you can’t see it, you can definitely feel it. So grab that kite and let dad show that wind who’s boss!

Sense of Smell

Where To Take Dad – Coffee. Steveston offers almost 15 different places to get dad his caffeine fix, so whether it’s his favourite chain store, a local cup from Steveston Coffee Company, a unique pairing of coffee and soccer at Bean and Beyond, or a specialized siphon at Rocanini, the aroma of coffee is around every corner and sure to awaken his senses.
Free alternative – Though you still need to buy the bag, why not wake and make him a cup of coffee in the comfort of your home, using some of the many beans that are roasted locally and sold in Steveston stores. We especially recommend the classy black bags available at both Rocanini and Steveston Coffee Co.

Sense of Taste

Where To Take Dad – D Original Sausage Haus – Taste is arguably dad’s favourite sense, and nothing is going to taste better on Father’s Day then a bratwurst handcrafted by a 5th generation sausage maker. In the few short months since opening in Steveston, D-Original Sausage Haus has made a name for itself in the quality products they serve. For Father’s Day they are offering 20% off all their brats (sort of apropos, isn’t it?).
Free alternative – Sinfully The Best. From one specialty food shop to another: the ladies have some quality chocolate gifts for all you dads, and are generous with the sampels to make sure everyone gets exactly what they want. All you have to do now is pick up some beer and you have every important food group covered.

Happy Father’s Day!

In the Food and Drink category alone, Steveston businesses represented nearly 50% of all awarded businesses. With Steveston hosting less then 10% of the restaurants in Richmond, that is an exceptional stat. Everyone usually expects Steveston to be well represented, but it is still an amazing feat considering the small population and geographical size of Steveston compared to the rest of the city.

But with this year’s success, there was something else at play, something Steveston has done better than the rest. And it’s not what you think it is.

The Power of Social Media

For the last couple of years Steveston has been building a strong social media community, and especially in the last six months, there’s been tremendous growth with new businesses and residents “joining the conversation”.

So when it came time to choose the Best of Richmond this year, we saw an online community rise up and vote in a way we’ve never seen before: Twitterers were reminding each other to vote with links and hashtags, people posted and liked it on Facebook. It’s never been easier to be reminded to vote and then go and do it.

Reviewing the winners this year you’ll find that the vast majority of those businesses have an active social media presence. It’s true that most of them rightfully earned their spot as a ‘best of’, but it’s also clear to see that an engaged online community directly affected the results. This is not to say that it’s a bad thing, but instead points out what a powerful lesson this can be for the other businesses out there.

What Makes Steveston’s Social Media So Awesome

There are a few factors that Steveston has in its favour that will always give it the upper hand in this department.

• The offline community is awesome. There is already a strong bond among Stevestonites which naturally extends online, and it seems no one is more proud of their part of Richmond than we are. Steveston goes beyond being just a location and exists as more of a culture.
• The businesses are small and local. When it comes to the independent stores in town, most likely the Twitter account is run by the owner and this, for better or worse, makes the conversation very personal. It’s difficult for a large chain to tweet relevant local stuff about each location, yet super easy for a local owner-operated business to naturally do it.
• There’s lots to talk about. Because of Steveston’s interesting history and growing population, there will always be the tension of preserving history while planning the future. From the colour of the tram barn to the price of parking, the conversations go beyond the weather.

So Steveston should be happy with the accolades, but especially proud that by combining old school word-of-mouth and some modern technology, we’re keeping our little town on the map.

D Original Sausage Haus

So whether you’re a long time resident or a first time visitor, a weekly regular or a weekend warrior, stopping in for the day or working until the night, we hope these ideas help make your next Steveston stop.

First Timers
First and foremost, we’re famous for our fish and chips. Whether you enjoy them in the park, on the wharf, in a store or on-the-go, no visit to Steveston is complete without it. If you’re in the mood to take fish home with you, buy some fresh off the docks from one of the many boats at Fisherman’s Wharf. For dessert, it’s only a short walk to Timothy’s for frozen yogurt and ice cream in warm waffle cones, and while those mini donuts are a summer delicacy at the PNE, they’re available year-round at Outpost. Whatever time of year it is, the Steveston Farmers & Artisans Market runs practically every second Sunday, both inside and outside the Gulf of Georgia Cannery. During the spring and summer you’ll find fresh produce, treats and unique crafty items lining the sidewalks and parking lot, and during the winter you can explore the award-winning Cannery museum while picking your way through the vendor stalls.

Families
If you’ve got kids in your car, it’s impossible to miss the sprawling Steveston Park on the way into the village. This central hub for children boasts a fully climbable fishing boat, an epic slide, more monkey bars than you can shake a stick at, swings galore, and plenty of benches for the rest of us. Take some of that energy and let them loose at the dirt bike park at the end of No. 2 Road, or go explore the interactive exhibits at the Cannery, where it’s only a hop, skip and a jump to get a Screamer afterwards. If the market is on, just try to walk past the Kettle Corn tent without treating them to a bag, and what better way to follow up a good play than a visit to Splash Toy Store. While not the best place for swimming, Garry Point has a beach full of climbing opportunities for kids, and offers some of the best kite watching to cap off your day.

Foodies
With such a range of restaurants, it’s hard to know where to start. The wharf is a great choice for its collection of patios with the Blue Canoe, Shady Island, Sockeye City, Cimona, Paesano’s and Tapenade all within one block. Follow the smell of BBQ over to Hog Shack, lounge at neighbouring Mandalay, or get a taste of Malaysia at Kari House. Venture off the docks for experiences exclusive to Steveston, like greek food at George’s or Kisamos, pub food at the Buck & Ear or O’Hare’s, and sushi at Ichiro or Mega Sushi. There may be two other locations now, but Steveston Pizza Company started here, and you’ve never had a gourmet pizza quite like this. Definitely don’t miss wines, cheese and charcuterie platters under a tree at trendy Gudrun, and make sure to take home some local baking, like bread fresh from an old stone oven at Romania Country Breads, custom designed cupcakes at Bell’s Bake Shop, and classic cake creations at the Diplomat.

Explorers
Those seeking adventure and exploration can hop on board the Vancouver Whale Watch or take a Steveston Seabreeze Adventure, with the latter offering more land-based bike rentals too. If you’re on wheels, the dyke is ready to be biked all along the waterfront, and continues right around Richmond if you want to keep riding. Sticking closer to the village, the Steveston Museum has a free downloadable heritage map for a self-guided walking tour, and you will definitely want to wander through the Britannia Heritage Shipyard, where you can search out the chicken coop amidst the original buildings and homes of Cannery Row. For the smaller scale adventurer, there’s also the many Steveston-specific geocaching sites, and for those hunting out that long lost LP, the Beatmerchant has you covered.

Regulars
If you come to Steveston regularly, chances are you’re getting a coffee. For a relatively small area, we’ve got about 15 different places to get your fix. Besides chains like Starbucks, Blenz and Waves, we’ve also got classics like the Cannery Cafe and the Steveston Coffee Company, as well as modern favourites like Rocanini and Bean & Beyond. Gift shopping is made easy on Moncton, where four popular gift shops sit right next door to each other: Serenity, Splash, Nikaido, and Pieces. Investigate the village further by seeking out discount treasures at the General Store, both the thrift stores, and all three fashion consignment stores. From there you can expand to the many specialty boutiques: jewellery, maternity, travel, furniture, appliances, pets, marine supplies, and more.

Locals
Locals love everything mentioned already, but enjoy a pace during the week that is a little slower than what you find on weekends. To live like a local, buy fish off the dock but complete your meal at one of our local grocers: Super Grocer, Veggie King, Herringers and Nirvana Organics. We like to go to Steveston Barbers for a classic barbershop experience and an excellent hair cut, but you’ve got your choice of more than a dozen other hair dressers in the village. As well, locals know that they can get their appliances fixed, cars repaired, taxes done, teeth cleaned, nails painted, backs massaged, wine made, prescriptions filled, and dogs groomed without leaving town. To end a busy day like that, all that’s left is to bring a lawn chair or blanket to Garry Point and take in a relaxing Steveston sunset.

Steveston Salmon Festival presents The Bullhead Derby – The Golden Rods and Reels Society hosts this day of fishing fun at Garry Point Park. Derby registration starts at 9am, competition goes from 10am to noon, and it’s open to children 12 and under and seniors 65+ but promising to be a day of family fun. Lots of prizes to be won, and everyone who takes park is guaranteed a ribbon! For more info see the event post.

Walk Richmond Steveston Village Walk – The Richmond Fitness and Wellness Association hosts these walks across the city for people of all ages, and this Steveston-focused one has a Canadian Pride theme so make sure to wear red & white to celebrate our country. Connect with other walkers on this evening stroll through the historic fishing village while passing the markets, galleries and shops. More info at the Walk Richmond Walking Series page.

June 29 – July 1
Ships To Shore – Ships to Shore returns this year and the main event is moving right into Steveston Village just in time for the big Canada Day celebrations. A small flotilla of tall ships and other sailing ships and historical vessels of note will be on display and available for free public boarding at Imperial Landing just past Starbucks. 11th Annual Steveston Seafood & Wine Festival – This annual highlight of the local dining scene pairs food from 15 of our local restaurants with wine from more than 25 different wineries. Doors Open Richmond – A free weekend celebration that opens up Richmond’s best places with guided tours, displays, activities and more. Steveston hosts 12 of the 40 different sites, including heritage landmarks like the Britannia Shipyards and Interurban Tram, modern structures like the brand new No. 2 Firehall, hidden gems like the McKinney Heritage House, and the artist’s studios of Rita McArthur, Jodie Blaney, and Adrienne Moore. Cooking for a Cause – The Gulf of Georgia Cannery brings in leading environmentalist David Suzuki, radio and TV personality Vicki Gabereau, Canadian rock icon Matthew Good, and the Gitga’at First Nation to officially launch Guarding the Gifts – The Liilga K’yilama Fund and to draw attention to the dangers and risks to the Gitga’at people and the Great Bear Rainforest proposed by the Northern Gateway Pipeline Project. Mother’s Day Tea – Treat the mothers in your life to a full tea with tea or hot chocolate, a scone and other homemade goodies for $8.50 per person in the quaint tea room in the London Heritage Farm House.
Annual Plant Sale – After taking your mother for tea make sure to head outside and grab some plants between 10 – 5pm. They have hanging baskets, perennials, seedlings, etc. All the plants are organic and grown in their gardens.

The relay will be coming in on Moncton and turning onto No. 1 Road towards Bayview. Once on Bayview they’ll travel to 3rd ave and head North to Chatham. Meet at the Sharing Farm Orchard at the bottom of Gilbert Road for 11am. Record Store Day at The Beatmerchant
From 10am to 6pm Frankie will new and used Vinyl for sale and lots of t-shirt and poster give-away’s. And if Mother Nautre co-operates there will be live music with Mike Van Eyes.

Scotiabank MS Walk
Garry Point Park is once again the start and finish location for the Scotiabank MS Walk fundraiser. A short 2km route and a long 4km route lead participants on a beautiful tour around the kite field, followed by snacks, refreshments, music, family-friendly activities and great company. Ask The Expert… Meow and Bark and Dany of Origins K-9 Academy will be hosting an Ask The Expert event from 6-7pm. Be prepared to win a lovely prize & arrive armed with your K-9 training questions!

March 10-25
Spring Break at the Cannery – Rain or shine, families will find lots to do at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery this spring break, with maritime-related arts and crafts, a new “Explore the Museum” activity program for kids age 6-11, and the always popular guided tours through the history of the Cannery, which run every hour on the hour. Also, join the Cannery’s costumed interpreter on a new interactive tour called “CAN you handle it!” (get it?), March 14th and 16th only.

March 17
St. Patrick’s Day – Many restaurants will have the green beer flowing but for the truest irish experience head over to O’Hares Gastropub for the 25th annual St. Patrick’s Day party.

March 18
Steveston Farmers & Artisans Market – The food, gifts and handmade crafts continue as the Winter (but almost Spring) Market takes over the inside of the Gulf of Georgia Cannery between 10am & 3pm.
