Integral Impressions joins morefocus Group

I am excited to announce that Integral Impressions has become a morefocus Group company.

We’ve made this decision in the best interest of our clients and shareholders. morefocus Group brings over 10 years experience, leadership, and resources that will be at Integral’s disposal.

Beyond being a strong strategic fit, the two companies are very much a match culturally.

After a 90 day transition period, here is what you can expect:

What this means for our clients:

We now have more resources to grow our applications and improve our service

Our apps will be functioning better than ever

We will continue to launch new, and innovative web services

What is changing:

We are moving away from design, development, and consulting for contract work

We will be 100% application driven business

What is staying the same:

Nourish, Outlandish, and EasyCropper will be our flagship applications

The leadership team will remain in tact, while Colin Lucas-Mudd joins the Integral Impressions Board

This is a very exciting time for us. We are looking forward to the positive changes that are taking place. We see a huge opportunity to leverage the climate in our industry and make big things happen.

If you’d like to stay connected with us throughout all this excitement, we will be tweeting at @moreofocus. Stay tuned!

What We've Been Up To

I’d like to take a moment to talk with everyone about some recent (and serious) changes occurring within our business.

The fluctuations in the economy seem to be hitting our clients with the randomness and force of a tornado. While some of our clients are unscathed, maybe even busier than ever, others are declining and retracting. The effects have left our business encountering more unpredictability than we have seen in the last five years.

As a result, we have had to run our business on the bare necessities to sustain ourselves. Unfortunately, this has meant that many people have had to make big sacrifices on our behalf.

In an effort to limit these effects and regain traction, we are retooling our plan and making some big changes to our core business.

Here is a preview of what is to come:

We are changing our flagship offering from a pure applications company (100% Rails), to a full service web development and marketing firm.

We are updating our website to reflect our new services and bring client case studies to the forefront.

We are putting a greater focus on client work while making the necessary improvements to our internal development projects.

In addition to refining our service offerings, we have been busy making sure our internal operations are running as efficiently as possible. This includes moving a bulk of our server assets to Mosso (RackSpace). Moving our web properties to the cloud hosting environment allows us to increase speed and reliability while cutting basic hosting costs. Our clients save money, while getting better service. It’s one of many silver linings that we hope to arise from our efforts.

Though we do see a light at the end of the tunnel, we are positioning ourselves for ‘survival’ based on what we feel is going to be the state of the Union for months to come. I am optimistic that these changes will help grow our business despite the realities many of us face.

We wish you the best of luck in these economic times and we are very grateful for your ongoing support.

So Fresh and So Clean

New Year’s Eve has been one of my favorite holidays since I before I could cross the street alone. When I was little, it meant hot chocolate with marshmallows and staying up past my bedtime. Watching the ball drop. Screaming and noisemakers. Checking off the first hugs, first kisses, first high kicks, etc. For some reason, though you’d done it a million times before, in those first moments after midnight everything feels new.

The experiences and the memories vary from year to year, but the one thing that doesn’t change is that fresh feeling of New Year’s Day. Maybe it’s the endless stream of philosophical wisdom that surrounds it, but on that day, and for days after, my outlook is definitely refreshed.

After spending my first New Year’s holiday with Integral Impressions, I’ve been pleased to find that our company shares the same philosophical optimism. Things around here have been buzzing with figurative fresh coats of paint and brainstorms. Paint and storms don’t typically jive, but it’s been doing wonders for us.

Stay tuned to this blog as we get ready to begin rolling out fresh updates, projects, and perspectives on the things we love and love to do most!

Integral Launches Greenwala

Integral Impressions recently played a key role in the launch of Greenwala.com, a green social network and media company that prides itself on connecting individuals. The main objective of the network is to increase education, grow a community, and facilitate commerce surrounding green initiatives.

Many times we speak with people that are curious about our process for building an application like Greenwala; so I thought I’d briefly share our experience.

With competition in the social network space fierce, choosing the right features to focus on first was an important part of the discovery process for us. The first thing we did was vet and prioritize our ideas in a series of meetings.

After we wrote the initial documentation and site specifications, we proceeded to design photoshop mock-ups of the main screens and important interactions points. We iterated on the designs of these key screens before any code was written.

Once we had buy-in from all the stakeholders on the initial design, we proceeded to cut up the designs into working HTML. After we had a clickable version of the site, we handed the project over to our lead developer to start the engineering.

Kane and her team took static HTML files, and created a dynamic social site with a customized content management system built specifically for the Greenwala team to administer the network.

Once we had our first release in late October, we tested the site internally. We identified all bugs, and started refining various aspects of the design and user interaction. After another 3 weeks of testing and QA, we were ready for public launch.

On November 18th, at the GreenBuildExpo in Boston, the beta version of Greenwala.com was unveiled. Since launch we’ve been busy refining the application based on user feedback. The initial release is now complete, but the hardwork has just begun.

Now stop reading this and go get your green on.

At the first installment of the San Diego Social Media Club this month, Ron Ploof gave a fabulous presentation on the value of social media in the new world of customer service. It inspired me to talk more about the ways that we are reaching out to our customers who are using or talking about Nourish, Easycropper, and Outlandish.

While we do still have an 800 number for the classic customer (888-882-2242), we also have our ears to our screens through Twitter and our user Forums.

Nourish

Nourish users may want to follow @nourish to get the latest in product updates, or to simply shout out about how much you love the product. Plus, we might be able to provide helpful hints for improving your user experience right away. There are all kinds of fun opportunities hidden inside this one little app!

Of course, if Twitter is not your cup of tea, we are always checking our Nourish Feature Request Forum for your ideas on how to improve Nourish, and our Nourish General Forum to help troubleshoot any issues you may be having.

Easycropper

Easycropper enthusiasts can tweet to ”@easycropper”: http://twitter.com/easycropper with all the happiness and euphoria that comes from being able to crop and resize images in a just a few easy clicks! How can we make a good thing better? We bet you have some answers.

Like Nourish, you can also post Easycropper ideas in the Easycropper Forum.

1 Year Later, & We Have A Community

I started the SD Bloggers meet up to create a place where local bloggers could interact and network with like minded individuals. Never did I image such a large group of passionate new media folks would call the group their own. I am very thankful for the support the San Diego tech community has shown our bloggers, and it is a testimony to our support for each other. So, thank you!

Another special thanks goes out to TechZulu and DiscoverSD for covering the event. I’ve also found a few links to some pictures from the meetup, but please post a link in the comments section if you know of any other galleries.

Richie Edquid – Facebook Gallery
DiscoverSD – Photo Gallery

As I’ve stated before the event, the first 25 bloggers to write a post about the meetup, will receive a complimentary SD Bloggers T-Shirt. Just email me the link to your post, your T-shirt size, and mailing address, and I will take care of it. (There are both Mens and Womens sizes available.)

Last, but certainly not least, a very special thanks goes out to Modus for opening their doors for the SD Bloggers. Their staff did a great job serving all the thirsty bloggers and their venue was the perfect size. Because the event was so successful for Modus, they’ve graciously offered to send any blogger that attended the event (and ordered food) an opportunity to write a review and receive a $25 gift certificate towards a future dinner at Modus. Just send the owner Scotty an email with a copy of your blog post, mailing address, and he will send you a gift certificate in response.

Thanks again to everyone who came out and supported our group. The next event will be in North County on 11/18 at 7:30pm. Please check SDBloggers.com for details and to RSVP.

On a final note, the new SDBloggers website will likely be finished before the next meeting. We ran into a snag right before our big event and didn’t want to release something that was incomplete. I am sure you can respect that.

I hope to see you all at the next blogger meetup and if you are interested in hosting or sponsoring an event of your own, please ping me about it.

Cheers!

Merb Camp in San Diego

MerbCamp, the first official gathering for the Merb programming community, is October 11th and 12th at UCSD.

Merb is a new programming language that is the successor to Rails in many ways due to its speed and agility. Rubyists like Merb over Rails because they feel it is less ‘opinionated’ than Rails. In other words, Merb is easier to configure exactly what you need, and eliminate any bloat that typically comes with a bulky framework like Rails.

Though Merb was highly influenced by Rails, a growing number people feel Merb is a better fit for building web apps because it is highly flexible and faster than it’s counterpart.

Our team has been developing applications in Merb since February 2008. We believe Merb is the most flexible and powerful Ruby framework available, and we are excited for the release of Merb 1.0.

The two lead developers behind Merb, Ezra Zygmuntowicz and Yehuda Katz, will keynote the event. Here is a bit more on the history of Merb and
links to the community.

Integral Connections

After hanging out and networking with some great people these last few days at BlogWorld Expo in Las Vegas and the San Diego Tweetup at the Pearl in Point Loma, I was refreshed by the frequent recurrence of one simple question: “What are you working on?”

Certainly, asking others what they do is a standard engagement tactic, but to go the extra mile and ask what they are doing it for was a welcome advance. It’s not only conducive to a much heartier networking experience, but I think it’s representative of the many facets that one developer, designer, project manager, marketer, and even founder can have in the field of website development today.

A good example of this has to do with Ruby, the code of choice for Integral Impressions. Not only do we enjoy a good romp through Ruby in the traditional sense, but we are currently building an exciting new site, with lots of bells and whistles, in MERB.

While our lead developer Kane Baccigalupi has already done a great job expounding upon the accolades of this relatively new framework, I can tell you from a client satisfaction perspective that it’s gaining ooh’s and aah’s, even in pre-beta mode. You can bet we’ll be proud participants in the first ever Merb Camp right here in San Diego.

We’re also excited to be working with local media on building their websites and, in turn, their social networks. Thanks in part to BlogWorldExpo and our local consultant, Jennifer Van Grove, we’re learning new ways to help our clients build their brand and contribute their media and content to the greater good – or maybe just the greater entertainment.

We’ve got lots going on with our applications as well, with upgrades in the works to Nourish and Outlandish. If you’re using them now, get ready for some exciting upgrades! If not, hurry up and get in so you can still take advantage of our generous campaign limits, which may decrease with the new rollout.

And this is just a tiny peek into what we’ve got tumbling around back here. Now that you know more about us, what are you up to?

The Future of Web Apps: Facebook Connect

What is it?

Facebook Connect is a new service for developers that lets you do three important things:
## Offer users an option to signup and login with their Facebook ID instead of creating yet another login.
## Enable users to see which friends on Facebook are signed up for your service.
## Give the ability to ‘push’ updates from your site to a Facebook user’s newsfeed, helping to spread the word about your site or service.

How does it help me?

Facebook Connect allows developers to build the next generation website by leveraging Facebook’s platform. Let’s face it: combined, MySpace, Facebook, and Google house a bulk of Internet users, if not all of them. How would you like to piggy back off each of these networks to build your own network?

Facebook is leading the charge with Facebook Connect, and MySpace and Google following in their footsteps. With this technology, building a community online has never been easier because there is a gigantic pool of established users to tap into.

A few examples of what you can build with Facebook Connect:

(1) A new social network

No, social networks aren’t dead. In fact, they are becoming more important than ever. Just as ‘niche marketing’ is a hot topic right now, niche social networks are coming into the mainstream. Your niche social network can benefit from the larger, more general social networks to help your community grow more quickly than it ever could on it’s own.

Think of your new social networks as a lens over Facebook. You can color the Facebook social network with whatever niche you want to explore. (This could be a blog post in and of itself, so use your imagination in the mean time.)

(2) Social shopping sites

Turn your ecommerce website into a social shopping network. If you are selling something online successfully, you’ve got a community on your hands. Why not let that community share what they do on your site with their network on Facebook?

Imagine the following activities showing up in a customers newsfeed on Facebook:

When someone creates an account on your site

When someone signs up for your newsletter

When someone comments on your products

When someone buys a product

When someone rates a product

When someone refers a friend

All these activities could turn into an opportunity to help your brand spread virally, if you empower Facebook Connect.

(3) Make your apps Social

We’ve got a couple apps here at Integral Impressions, and you can bet that we are working diligently to integrate Facebook Connect in order to maximize the ‘virality’ of our applications.

For example, when someone crops an image with EasyCropper, we can update their newsfeed. When someone creates a newsletter with Nourish, we can update their newsfeed. When someone comments on the Integral Blog, we can update their newsfeed. When someone does just about anything on any of our apps, we can update their newsfeed. You get the picture.

When will it launch?

Right now Facebook has allowed developers to integrate their websites and applications with Facebook Connect, but only in a development environment. Late Summer is the anticipated roll out of Facebook Connect for production ready apps. Until then: testing, testing, and more testing.

Integral Impressions is currently integrating multiple projects with Facebook Connect, ranging in size from 25 to 200 hours. The integration can be as ‘deep’ or as ‘shallow’ as needed. If you’d like a quote on integrating this new service with your website or application, we’d be happy to discuss the potential with you. Call or email us today, and take advantage of being one of the first to market with this innovative technology.

Nouri.sh: Preventing RSS Bankruptcy

Despite the ribbing and ridicule that comes along with it, I am happy to admit that I’m a Wheel Watcher. I like puzzles, and mindless ones help me relax from a long day; even if I end up just trying to figure out how Vanna White hasn’t aged over the past 20 years.

Anyhow, my grandma tendencies sort of help to explain why it is that, when I hear people talk about “bankruptcy” of any kind, the first image that comes to mind is that big, black doomsday slice of the wheel. BANKRUPTCY - it’s a hearty dose of dumping your lode. You lose any of your earnings, vacations, and your turn, setting you back behind your opponents. No fun.

Bankruptcy often comes up in conversations (virtual or otherwise) about RSS feeds. You take a break from a few days of your feed reader and suddenly there are 786 unread posts for you to catch up on. With some sadness, you are met with the decision of investing time and resources into getting back in the loop, or declaring bankruptcy on your shiny, unopened, unread feed posts. How could you have prevented this?

Integral makes a product called Nouri.sh (http://nouri.sh/) that can help you avoid bankruptcy of this kind by delivering the feeds you want, when you want them, to your inbox. By aggregating these feeds into one email, you can stay in the one window of your inbox while getting the goodness of your choice of feeds in one convenient package. Just like Wheel of Fortune, you can take it one phrase at a time.

Even better, Nouri.sh can help you deliver the posts from YOUR RSS feed to people who also lack the time to keep up with another tab in their browser. You can set up Nouri.sh to deliver content from your blog, FriendFeed, Flickr, Digg—anything that you want to share with others. Then just set up a mailing list in Nouri.sh using the convenient interface provided, program the delivery of your emails, and—Voila!—you are helping to prevent your information from being a tossed away through feed reader bankruptcy. It’s almost like a free spin card! Who hasn’t wanted one of those?

Bankruptcy can happen to even the nicest, most connected individuals, so why not buy an ounce of prevention to save yourself a pound of trouble and Nouri.sh yourself and your customer with all those feeds?

Just don’t buy a vowel when you know it’s in the puzzle. Such a waste.

Information in-Formation

Throughout school, I was always a good student, but not because I have a great memory. It’s because I have the worst handwriting on Earth, the product of many years of feverish, frenzied note-taking.

Of course, pages of notes are not the best or most concise way to learn, either – so I then became good at organizing information, digesting it, storing it, and finally putting it in a form that I could use.

When you’re in class, learning is a relatively focused task. Professors stay within the confines of a topic, feed you a lecture, assign reading, and confirm your comprehension thereof. The information has already been honed from a vast body into a streamlined point. Even then, it is a challenge to learn, understand, and use what is being given to you.

Knowledge is power, and information is key, but too much information is bumbling and useless. People who search the internet are looking for information, but they still need it to be structured and focused. Your job as a business or an entrepreneur is to play professor for the lessons you have to impart. If you do this well, you can educate customers or even inspire them to become teachers themselves – but teachers of your product. This is often referred to as “going viral.”

Going viral has traded some of its negative connotation for a highly-sought-after condition of a company’s message or product. When information on the internet is well organized, a person finds what they’re looking for, tags it, and passes it along to their friends. Word of mouth has moved from the lips to the fingertips, and has dropped its conversational tone in favor of something more akin to a sonic boom.

Integral Impressions specializes in building content management systems (CMS) for companies that not only want to organize their information online, but retain the capability to edit and manipulate it themselves. While a website allows you to focus your information, a CMS allows you to focus and re-focus it to meet the needs of your message and your customers.

Just like good professors will revise their lessons annually to correlate with current events, good businesses will do the same with the messages they send to their customers. Why would you leave this to a contracted developer – you’re the one with the PhD in your business, right?

So if you want to be the best “teacher” of your company, and make your lesson plan stick among the masses, consider investing in a CMS when looking at ways to make your website dynamic and effective.

I would shy away from any pop quizzes, though.

It's Getting Easier to Be Green

Almost 40 years ago (if you can believe it), Kermit the Frog sang a song that has not only endured the test of time, but the test of relevancy, as well: “It’s Not Easy Being Green.”

Back then, this song hinted at the racial and cultural environment of the time, and sent a message of being comfortable with one’s unique lifestyle. Today, it’s commonly used in reference to the environment as a culture all its own, and to stepping out of one’s comfort zone into a “greener” lifestyle.

Making your lifestyle “greener” can be as simple as replacing your lightbulbs and reducing your water usage, and as elaborate as installing solar panels or buying a hybrid car, but no one method is all inclusive, or enough.

Integral Impressions is thrilled to be a part of exciting new avenues to help us all get a little greener. We are teaming up with Greenwala and Digital-Telepathy on two unique projects that will not only help you learn more about getting green, but also connect you with the steps you can take to get there. Stay tuned!

No promises that we’ll be singing about it though. We’ll leave that to Kermie.

Integral Rebrand Important Update

Where we’ve been.

We have been on a soul searching mission as a company deciding who we wanted to be and what we wanted to do with our brand. First, we wanted to reinvent ourselves as a product based company. In order to do that, we were setting out to change the name of Integral Impressions while creating a product. That posed some major challenges with a company of our size and resources. At that point we decided to focus entirely on the branding of the product, known as Publish Social.

The thinking was, we needed to put the weight of the entire company behind Publish Social. As we consulted with digital-telepathy, it became clear that Integral Impressions was so much bigger than Publish Social and we needed to keep the parent entity. At that point we decided that Publish Social would be a product / project similar to Nourish or Outlandish. Furthermore, we decided to get the help of the community and make Publish Social one of the first open source Merb CMS’.

Now that Publish Social is taking an identity of it’s own, we are coming back to the parent company, Integral Impressions.

We decided to keep the name Integral Impressions due to the brand equity we have been building over the last 4 years (especially over the last 6 months). With that being said, the Integral Rebrand is officially being downgraded to an ‘Integral Redesign’ instead. We are working on giving this website better organization, refresh the look and feel, and integrate some social elements such as Twitter.

So what’s next?

Well, we are launching Publish Social as an open source project. Chris’ personal site will be the first site running on Publish Social, which will be deployed relatively soon. We will be putting some basic marketing materials together over the next couple months (such as blog posts, landing pages, documentation, etc) that clearly define Publish Social and welcomes Ruby developers to the party.

Our immediate priority will be to focus on Integral Impressions and redesigning our site to reflect our current attitude of transparency while empowering social content. From there you will see more development with Publish Social.

Since we have publicly made this entire process available on our blog, we have had some great feedback and we thank you for your involvement. We will continue to be as transparent as we can with our operations moving forward. Please continue to comment, critique, praise, and give feedback- we value and appreciate your participation!

Between Ad:Tech, and Web 2.0 Expo, it was pretty difficult to get everyone all on the same page and push forward at the pace we wanted. The worst of it is that things were more or less delayed by about 2 weeks. The good news is that we’re back on track and pushing forward at 100%.

Since the end of last week, Bill and I have been working on finalizing our schedule. We’ve got all the major and minor milestones laid out, due dates assigned, and responsibilities delegated. We’re double-checking to make sure everyone involved can commit to the schedule. However, it’ll likely change very little if at all. Here it is:

Production Schedule

Looking for a logo

On Friday, I met with Bill and Chris Decatur to go over some initial concepts for our new logo. Chris is one of digital telepathy’s designers, and put together some initial concepts for our the meeting.

Logo Concepts – Page 2

As we went over the concepts, there were two I gravitated towards and felt had real potential.

The Magnet

The magnet concept really played on the idea of us “pulling in” social content. I loved the concept here since this really illustrates the core of what we’re looking to do. Not only that, but using a magnet gives us some really strong direction for the rest of our creative, both visually and in terms of marketing copy.

The biggest thing I want to work on with this one is simplifying it. Logo design is often about taking a complex, or abstract concept and simplifying it visually. The trick is to do this without losing the ability to recognize the initial idea. Chris did a great job with this so far, but we just need to push it a bit further.

The other concern that I had was making sure we didn’t venture too close to Unison’s logo. Especially considering the guys over at Panic love to call out people who can’t seem to come up with their own ideas. I don’t think we have anything to worry about though. To be honest, Bill and Chris didn’t even know what Unison was until I took them to the website.

“The Squiggle”

I wasn’t really called “The Squiggle”. I just needed something short to use for a heading. Just to be clear, this is the concept exploration done in the bottom right of the first page.

What I liked about this direction was the simplicty. I love simplicity, I really do. I felt this mark was elegant, yet bold. What it was lacking was a strong story. It needed a reason other than just being simple for the sake of being simple. The whole “let’s combine the initials of the company” thing is straightforward and common. (Yes, I do know what you’re thinking right now. No, I’m not saying its wrong. Let’s just move on…) However, the act of bringing together, or combining, the “P” and “S” does actually tie in with what we do quite well. I want to see if we can push that angle more with this one and make it a little more apparent.

What do you think?

I put some of my initial feedback out there for a couple reasons. First of all, I think that by hearing my own feedback, it’ll give you some insight into our thought processes around these concepts, and allow you to understand them more than you would if you were to just see them on your screen. I can’t repeat everything we discussed (not that there were any secrets, I just don’t have the time), but hopefully I’ve hit the important points.

Secondly, I want to get the conversation started. We want to hear what you think about the direction we’re going. I think its rare to see these early stages of the design process exposed in this way, but I’d rather hear your opinions now. A couple months from now (or maybe even a couple weeks from now), we’ll be too far along to easily react and adapt to feedback, suggestions, etc. Good or bad, bring it!

We’ve put up a basic landing page for PublishSocial. We did our best without any logo, identity, or concept but we wanted something up for BarCampSD. We borrowed from the Integral brand while Chris and his team work their magic on our new look and feel.

We’ve decided on a new name for the company. For those who didn’t catch it on Matt’s original post, the new name is Publish Social. I also give my candid reaction to the pressures of the whole process.
