INTEGRIS Health Expands Hospice Services

INTEGRIS Health has acquired Odyssey HealthCare of Oklahoma City, which includes hospice home care and inpatient services. Hospice of Oklahoma County Inc. (an affiliate of INTEGRIS Health) will provide the services previously offered by Odyssey HealthCare of Oklahoma City in an effort to strengthen its end of life care. The acquisition of Odyssey HealthCare of Oklahoma City provides a unique opportunity for INTEGRIS to expand its services to the community through a dedicated inpatient hospice facility.

New ProCure Proton Therapy Center Celebrates Grand Opening

The first group of what will eventually be 1,500 patients a year are being accepted for proton therapy treatment for their cancer at the new ProCure Proton Therapy Center in Oklahoma City, which celebrated its official grand opening today. Patients with head and neck, brain, central nervous system, prostate and some pediatric cancers, among others, will be treated at the new Center, the first in a network of ProCure centers to open across the country.

Physicians, community leaders and former patients with cancer who have been treated with protons will celebrate the opening of the ProCure Proton Therapy Center in Oklahoma City. It will be only the sixth proton treatment center in the United States to provide this advanced form of radiation therapy for a variety of tumors and will treat 1,500 patients a year.

Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States suffers a stroke. On Saturday, May 30, it happened to Johnny Miller of Clinton, Okla. He had just sat down in his recliner to enjoy a nice dinner when his right arm went numb. He tried to tell his wife of 52 years, Glenna, what was happening but his speech was slurred. Without hesitation she made the decision to take him to the hospital. Since he couldn’t get up on his own, she called 9-1-1.

More than 17 percent of the United States population suffers from tinnitus, commonly described as a hissing, ringing or whooshing sound in the ears or head. The condition is a symptom usually not related to a serious condition, but an auditory perception not directly produced by sound. Previous treatments such as medicine, surgery and masking did not help the majority of sufferers.

Cherul Rork of Enid, Okla., was a young woman in her 20s when she contracted a flu-like virus that began to attack her heart. She was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy in 1982. The damage to her heart was so severe the muscle was functioning only at 17 percent of normal capacity. She was given two to five years to live without a heart transplant. “I had never heard of a heart transplant,” admits Rork. “I didn’t know it was even possible to remove a heart and replace it with another one.”

Western Village Academy Celebrates Grand Opening of New Gym

Western Village Academy, the charter school operated by INTEGRIS Health, is celebrating the grand opening of the school’s new gymnasium. The school has never had an official gym. Until now, the students’ physical education and dance classes were held in a portable annex building. "Our old make-shift gym was inadequate in many ways," says Western Village Academy director Tobi Campbell. "It was too small and not conducive to sports and other activities. With our school’s focus on health, fitness and the arts, this has always been a dream for us."

The last steel girder will be placed on top of the new INTEGRIS Cancer Institute of Oklahoma located on 17.6 acres of land adjacent to the Oklahoma ProCure Treatment Center, bringing Oklahoma one step closer to the most advanced form of cancer radiation treatment therapy in the state. Construction of the INTEGRIS Cancer Institute of Oklahoma began last summer, with a completion date set for fall of 2009.

The Impella 2.5 Cardiac Assist Device was approved recently by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a temporary support for heart failure patients facing critical situations. The world’s smallest heart pump can assist the pumping of a weakened heart for periods up to six hours. That might not seem like a lot of time, but for 58-year-old Flora Floyd of Oklahoma City it was the difference between life and death. "I feel real lucky," says Floyd. "I had never heard of the Impella device, but I can tell you I feel totally different now. I can breathe, walk a little further than I could before, and my chest no longer hurts."

For children living with diabetes, learning to balance insulin, activity and food is the formula for success. Camp Endres has been teaching kids how to take control of their disease since 1999. But recently, due to a lack of funding and staff, Camp Endres has had to shorten the camp by one day and reduce the number of campers who can attend from 150 to 130.

Driving east on 13th Street, across from the baseball field, earthmovers, bulldozers and other heavy equipment have been busy preparing the site for the new INTEGRIS Grove hospital. Surveyors have staked out the entire site, an erosion fence and chain link fence are up and the community can see daily progress in meeting the completion date at the end of 2009.
