The Ultimate Print-Friendly Tool

I am really getting tired of web pages that don't have "Print Friendly" options. Pages that can't print cleanly are a definite irritation to me. And what about pages that have a lot of extra ad images -- who wants to print those out?

Now there's a cool free tool that will make literally any page you visit Print-Friendly. It's called Print What You Like, and it does just that. Just plug in the URL of the page you want to print, and PWYL loads into a left menu. You have several options - Remove Background, Remove Images, Remove Selected, and expand or narrow selected items. When you have removed what you don't want, just click print, and a clean copy will emerge from your printer.

If you don't want to visit the PWYL site every time, they also have a nifty bookmarklet you can just drag to a toolbar, so you're only one click away from making your page Print-Friendly.

The Arizona Land and Business Blog is brought to you by Michael Fleishman, a Tucson lawyer who helps clients deal with the legal issues that arise in the use and ownership of land and the planning/operation of a business. He's talking about foreclosure, land use, tax liens, and more.

TinyURL for Google Searches

I use TinyURL all time time -- it's a great tool for shortening URLs so that they don't take up so much room in an email, newsletter, Twitter post, etc. The company Look.fo wants to do the same thing with Google searches -- it creates an instant link to any Google search. For example, if I want to send someone a list of the results I got when I searched for "subprime lending," I just run my query at Look.fo, and I get this link:

<a href="http://look.fo/"subprime-lending"" >http://look.fo/"subprime-lending"

In contrast, here's what it looks like if I just copy and paste the actual results from Google:

http://www.google.com/search?q=subprime+lending&sourceid=navclient-ff&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1B3GGGL_enUS259US259

Look.fo isn't necessarily a life-saving tool, but it's still a pretty cool way of getting information to people.

This Week at Fios

One of the best things about my new employer, Fios, is the fantastic educational content they provide on e-discovery issues, all for free. Starting this week, I'm going to publish the Fios webcast schedule here, so you can register for them if you find a topic you like.

On Tuesday, October 7, Brad Harris of Fios' Discovery Center of Excellence will be speaking on "The Legal Hold Process -- A Crucial Component to Effective Discovery Response." Brad will be talking about the importance of the legal hold process in e-discovery, and why it's a must for any corporation that is faced with a request for electronically stored information. You can register for the webcast here.

Then on Thursday, October 9, we're featuring Part 2 of our series titled Financial Crisis, Litigation and Electronic Discovery, with a webcast on "Developing E-Discovery Response Plans for Litigation in the Financial Services Industry." Allen Gurney, David Ray, and Scott Giordano will analyze the role of e-discovery response plans in litigation, with a focus on readiness for subprime litigation and investigations. Register here.

At Trading Secrets, they're discussing topics such as breach of fiduciary duty, restrictive covenants, unfair competition, espionage, and more.

Finally, a Firefox Extension Just for Legal Researchers

I'm a little behind on posting things to my blog, so I'm not the first to mention this great extension for Firefox users. It's called Jureeka, and it's the brainchild of Michael Poulshock, a public interest lawyer in Pennington, New Jersey. The extension is designed specifically for lawyers and legal researchers: it turns legal citations in web pages into hyperlinks that point to online legal source material. Michael says that Jureeka is "great for quickly locating statutes, case law, regulations, federal court rules, international law sources, and more.

I'll be taking a closer look at Jureeka over the next few weeks. You should, too.

Targeting Legal Authority with LexisWeb

Have you tried the new search engine from Lexis? It's called LexisWeb, and its tag line is "target legal authority on the web." The interface is pretty interesting -- very spare and uncluttered. Just enter your search terms, and you'll be taken to a results page with lots of options.

At the top of your results page are links to "LexisNexis Recommended Sources" -- links to sources on LexisNexis that you can access if you have an account. Below that are the web results, and in my searches I find that many of the results come from law blogs. Click on the link to any result, and a preview screen pops right up.

What I like most, however, are the filters to the left. You can narrow down your search results by a number of subject areas -- legal topics, subject, geography, citations, companies, people, keywords, or source. Choose as many as you want, and watch the number of hits decrease accordingly. Nifty.

Lexis says that "during the beta offer....all search activities will be available to you free of charge." Which suggests that at some point they're going to charge for this search engine. That's a shame -- but take advantage of it while you can.
