This is a beautiful attempt to visualize the flow of the famous painting “Starry Night” of Vincent Van Gogh by Petros Vrellis. The user can interact with the animation and influence the sound via touch and motion. This coupled with such intriguing and wondrous music makes for a magnificent treat to the senses.

The New York Times Co., parent company of the Gray Lady, About.com and other publications, has its own research and development lab aimed at devising new ways to share media with readers. This latest invention takes that a step further, connecting you to much more than just the news. Through the looking glass, you could read the headlines while brushing your teeth or fixing your hair; refill a prescription or learn about your medicine by scanning an RFID tag on the bottle; and exchange messages with coworkers or other members of your household. It actually reminds us a little of this winner of our 2011 Invention Awards, though much more in-depth and consumer-focused.

The mirror uses Microsoft’s Kinect motion sensor to read physical signals from the person standing in front of it, according to a demo of the device over at Harvard’s Nieman Journalism Lab. The Times Co. has two versions, one of which would offer prescription information and coupons, and another with an online retail experience that lets you try things on, and suggests new outfits, based on what you wear in front of it. Vivas Comunicação (The Live Communications) is a creative agency out of Curitiba, Brazil, that is always in search of the best creative strategy. Viewing their website, it is clear that creativity is certainly present. Utilizing HTML5 and CSS3, this website’s sleek and attractive atmosphere is able to function and transition beautifully between content. Specifically, the parallaxing compliment between background images and foreground content.

The Max Planck Institute is one of Germany’s most successful research organizations, having produced about 17 Nobel laureates and 13,000 yearly academic publications since its foundation in 1948. The Max Planck Research Networks [max-planck-research-networks.net] visualization application in turn is showing off the institution’s international collaborations with other organizations in the world.

Developed by Moritz Stefaner and Christopher Warnow, the application runs on a semi-public multi-touch screen, which displays a network graph of the relationships between all relevant organizations, an accompanying world map, plus various bar graphs that reveal other facts and important statistics. The data is gathered from analyzing the co-authorship connections detected in the 94,000 publications that were produced over the last 10 years.

For the network graph, the relative size of an institute’s icon represents the number of scientific publications, and the width of the connecting lines reflects the number of jointly published papers between 2 separate institutes.

This exhibit celebrates a new generation of visual pioneers—part graphic designers, part statisticians, part artists—who have a faculty for turning data into meaning, often with beauty and urgency unexpected from data.

In this exhibit, they turn their talents to help us see what we do when we log on. Strictly speaking, these are simply visual displays of quantitative information. But in their beauty, clarity, and urgency, these visualizations don’t just tell us about our world, on- and off-line; they tell us about ourselves, through and through.

Quintetto is an installation based on the study of casual movement of objects or living creatures used as input for the production of sounds. The basic concept is to reveal what is calle “invisible concerts” of everyday life.


The vertical movements of the 5 fish in the acquariums is captured by a videocamera, that translates via computer software, their movements in digital sound signals. 
There are 5 different musical instruments creating a totally unexpected live concert. The installation was born with the collaboration of the Aesop studio
