The Max Planck Research Networks [max-planck-research-networks.net] visualization application in turn is showing off the institution’s international collaborations with other organizations in the world.

Developed by Moritz Stefaner and Christopher Warnow, the application runs on a semi-public multi-touch screen, which displays a network graph of the relationships between all relevant organizations, an accompanying world map, plus various bar graphs that reveal other facts and important statistics. The data is gathered from analyzing the co-authorship connections detected in the 94,000 publications that were produced over the last 10 years.

For the network graph, the relative size of an institute’s icon represents the number of scientific publications, and the width of the connecting lines reflects the number of jointly published papers between 2 separate institutes.

In this exhibit, they turn their talents to help us see what we do when we log on. Strictly speaking, these are simply visual displays of quantitative information. But in their beauty, clarity, and urgency, these visualizations don’t just tell us about our world, on- and off-line; they tell us about ourselves, through and through.

The vertical movements of the 5 fish in the acquariums is captured by a videocamera, that translates via computer software, their movements in digital sound signals.
There are 5 different musical instruments creating a totally unexpected live concert. The installation was born with the collaboration of the Aesop studio
.

Created by the Google Data Arts Team, the project is an open data visualisation platform for anyone to copy the code, add their own data and create their own globe. Globe visualisations get more interesting every day.

It uses a Kinect (“hacked” doesn’t seem really correct when it’s a Microsoft project) to see your hands and face, and allows you to juggle completely virtual 3-D objects–balance a virtual ball on a book, then tip it into a bowl of water, or stack virtual 3-D blocks. It’s pretty amazing.

You can see in the video above what’s happening: the user is able to interact with virtual 3-D holographs just as if they were real. They’re slightly janky, but behave mostly as they would in real life, responding to gravity and force and other objects. The system got a major shot in the arm thanks to the Kinect. As it turns out, interacting with virtual objects is just as much about tracking your line of sight as about tracking your hands. Its accuracy is much more on-point thanks to our little $150 buddy, though you still have to look through the screen or glass plate to see the virtual objects.

A product of the Sensors and Devices Group at Microsoft Research, the Holodesk isn’t due for release or anything like that–but given its main sensor is a Kinect, we can see some pretty impressive similar projects popping up in the near future.

Rotsztain’s Action Painting project (first featured on CAN in fall 2009) employs scenes and sound design—’data’ from action movies—as raw material to generate abstract expressionist style animations.

“Revving Motors, Spinning Wheels” (below) is one of four videos released by Rotsztain this summer that illustrate just how far this project has come – the piece reads as a love letter to both Jackson Pollock and Jason Bourne. On close viewing the source material (culled from Ronin, The French Connection, etc.) is clearly organized thematically and the video functions as a serial examination of the stock components of definitive chase scenes. Screeching brakes, blaring sirens, lead-footed acceleration and the inevitable Ballardian-endgame all filter through the mix in clusters of topical clips.
